2018-04-26 UPDATE! I've had a very kind offer from a fellow nitpicker who used to visit the board 20 years ago. He's said that he could convert the board to some other platform so that it could continue. That might mean it would move somewhere else. Or it might mean that it would stay here. Who knows? Are there any objections to that????

2018-04-16 Greetings All! As some of you had noticed, we had an outage a few days ago. I host this site (and all the philfarrand.com stuff) on a shared server, because it's much cheaper to do that. Unfortunately, because of the number of attacks by malware bots at this point in the Internet experience, it's easy for a site to get hit with malware, even if you are doing your best to keep everything up to date. So, I have enlisted the help of SiteLock to try to keep the site clean... but that does mean, from time to time, we are going to have outages.

In other news, I have checked into porting the discussion board to other more modern formats. Unfortunately, there are costs involved, and--given the board is two decades old--it is large and the costs are non-trivial. (A full backup of the board is 650 MB, and that's text!) In addition, the Discus technology is aging everyday and Discus is no longer being updated.

AND... my life is full with working, loving my wife, loving children and grand children, and writing! I'm currently on Book 9 of a 24 book series call Windfall. It's fun!

This leads us to a situation where we will be facing continual malware attacks. And the discussion board really needs to be migrated to another platform. And while I'm pretty sure I could do that, it would take time that I don't have. So... as I see it... we have a couple of options:

1.) We can keep doing what we're doing. I'm happy to keep hosting on philfarrand.com. Eventually the malware will probably find a weakness in the Discuss platform and I'll have to shut down the board so that I can keep philfarrand.com open... but that might not happen for a while.

2.) The board can move somewhere else. Just for information, I found a company who will do a full migration of the board to another technology (SHM??) for $3,000.00. Plus it would have to be hosted, that's another $10-15 per month for shared hosting and another $50 per month to keep the malware away. (A better host for hosting would be a dedicated site, but that's $80 per month all by itself.) If someone would want to pick up the discussion board, I would be happy chat about that and, if we move forward, run a full backup and pass it along. And I would be happy turn off posting on this board and include a link to the new board.

But, as I said above, for now, we CAN just keep doing what we're going. By the way, I'm on Facebook, if you are too, send me a friend invite. I'm not on it all the time but I do occasional updates here and there.
