David Kano

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Space: 1999: The Characters: David Kano

It would be interesting to know how similar the character of Ouma would have been to what we saw of Kano if Lon Satton hadn't managed to annoy his way out of a job. Probably not much difference.

I didn't remember this little facet of David Kano until I saw the laser disc of "Guardian of Piri" in the mid-1990's: he has a cybernetic implant near the base of his skull. What I find way cool about this is that it predates by a decade the "cyberpunk" genre of sf that gained a large-ish following in the mid-1980's. I realize S99 wasn't the first sf to explore the idea, on tv or otherwise. (I'm thinking of The Six Million Dollar Man as a mainstream example, or the book upon which it was based, Cyborg.) But it was still pretty unconventional for its time.

It's a pity more wasn't made of that implant, then again, maybe best to keep it as a one off. Star Trek in contrast would have used something like that every week.

And they would have done so with no consistency. One week it would be able to control the Enterprise with nary a problem and the next week it would threaten the user with brain damage just to control a simple robot.

It's nice that S99's writers used cybernetics/bionics only as an experiment that had no mainstream use; the way reality turned out, that ended up being very realistic.

Tim; those are excellent ideas! How would you like a job as a writer on my new show? With great ideas like that, uh, um, never mind. I think I'll just steal them for myself since Brannon and I are running out of ideas ourselves! I'll keep everything but rename him 'Khano', so that somebody can get mad at him and I can have a scene that ends with;
"KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNN-OOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!"
Thanks, Tim! :)

Just what other implants are there on Alpha?

I realy want to respond to that, but this is a family-friendly site...

Kano - potentially a fantastic character from the glimpse we saw of him in 'Full Circle'. Clearly more at home with his computer than with people. That quip about back seat drivers was priceless - and expecting Sandra to get the food. A computer geek AND a chauvinist ! He made that episode. Criminally underused, such a shame. Does anyone know what Lon Satton did to get sacked ? Must've been bad !

The rumour I've heard is that since he had appeared in the Bond film, Live and Let Die, he wanted more money than the company were willing to give.

If you ask me, Clifton Jones was a better actor anyway.

"A computer geek AND a chauvinist". We, computer geeks, are all a bit chauvinist. Why do you think so many sex pages on the net? :-)
