Is Space:1999 the Sequel to U.F.O.?

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Space: 1999: Is Space:1999 the Sequel to U.F.O.?
You can also leave nits and observations for U.F.O. here, if you wish.

Great! I was wondering if we'd ever get a UFO board...

I was horribly disappointed when 1980 came and we didn't have any cool toys like SkyDiver...

Are the aliens really baddies? In "Survival", one of the aliens shares his life support with Col. Foster, in a gesture of apparent altruism.

I read in a magazine, Starlog maybe, that the lunar base in U.F.O. was upgraded to Moonbase Alpha after the U.F.O.s mysteriously stopped showing up and that the Hawk attack crafts were the next line of defence after the lunar intercepters.

1999 isn't officially a sequel to UFO. There's no explicit continuity between the two series. Frankly I think the series backstory as presented in year 1 really doesn't fit with the idea of it being in the same universe. Year 2 on the other hand had one episode that could be seen as implying a link, "Brian the Brain." In this episode the Alphans are all unfamiliar with the deep space mission lead by Captain Michael, creator of Brian. One could speculate that no one knows about it because it was a secret mission conducted at the behest of SHADO, the secret alien fighting organisation seen in UFO. Perhaps Brian is based on the same technology used in SID, SHADO's orbiting, and apparently artificially intelligent, UFO detector. This is all implied speculation, but some clever writer could probably run with this.

Actually, Space: 1999 Series 1 and Series 2 seem to be in separate universes anyway...the idea of a connection between UFO and Space: 1999 Series 2 seems rather palusible, indeed, and done right could be less jarring than the disparity between Series 1 & 2.

I can run with spacecraft design evolution in a "UFO:1999" universe... The Apollo LEM's led to the SHADO Moon Mobiles, which in turn led to the Alphan Eagles. Find pictures of each and you'll see what I mean. Even the Swift and SuperSwift seem to follow this design lineage a little better than Series 1's various probe ships. (Not that those weren't really cool!)

Of course, ignoring Series 1 in this format might mean losing the Hawks, but I think artistic license could allow for that element to be "borrowed."

I tend to regard year one and year two as having happened in differenet universes as well, and suspect there was a deliberate attempt by Freiberger and co. to ignore year one.

UFO has been released on DVD in the UK.

Space: 1999 was orginally conceived and pitched to ITC as a sequel to UFO, and the title was not yet picked. The premise evolved into something completely seperate from UFO by the time the "rogue moon" idea became central to the plot.
Some time after Space: 1999 ended, the fantasy of imagining it as a sequel to UFO led some clever fans to imagine a way to stitch the two shows together. I'm not a UFO fan, but I like the idea.
I once imagined Captain Kirk's Enterprise encountering the rogue moon and Alpha, and an Eagle landing in the shuttlecraft hangar bay...

Peter, with all the warps the Alphans went through, it could have been possible. That would have been on heck of an show.

By Craig Rohloff on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 - 7:08 am:

I read a bit of fan fiction somewhere online that had a Space: 1999 crossover with ST:Voyager between S:99's first and second season. The author had a space warp/wormhole bring the two errant wanderers together, and when they pooled their resources, things were looking good...until the warp corrected itself and the moon and Voyager were flung back to their respective universes. Alpha had gained some new technology personnel (namely one Tony Verdeschi), but lost three of their own to Voyager (Bergman, Morrow and Kano).
It was one of many fan stories out there that try to reconcile Series 1 & 2, but the Star Trek angle was certainly different.

By Douglas Nicol on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 - 3:03 pm:

Craig, there was a large multi part DS9 crossover, also a fair sized TNG crossover as well where an Eagle discovers an emergency life station with an operational transporter. Maya uses it, and the accompanying Eagle pilot thinks Maya is dead.

I had some on Hard Drive and might still have them.

I have a UFO board at the bottom of the main page here.

"New Moon Over Bajor," the 1999/DS9 crossover can be found at http://www.alpha.ndirect.co.uk/newmoon/index.htm The 1999/TNG crossover story is "The Transformation" and can be found at

I recently managed to get a used Volume 1 DVD of UFO for £4.99 and was struck with some of the similarities. In particular the uniforms of the SHADO crewmen and women in the control centre beneath Harrington-Straker studios. They looked quite similiar to a mix of Year 1 and 2 uniforms.

tim gueguen - I have just tried both links in your entry of Friday, March 29, 2002 - the first brings up a blank page, and the second leads to a 404 error message.
