Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies

10/21/06
Hi, everyone!

Luigi Novi here. I was logging into PM to correct a misspelling in a post, when I saw that Voyager and Movies were now in my Page Manager, so it looks like I'm the new moderator for both. (I had stated that I'd take Voyager if no one else wanted it, but was really enthusiastic for Movies when that one became available; I had no idea Phil would give me both, and no one contacted me.) Hopefully this won't be too much of a workload.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to improve these boards, do not hesitate to make them, or to offer constructive criticism.

Be advised that as per Phil Farrand's rules of Nit-C, profanity, insults, and ad hominem arguments (particularly those directed at fellow posters) will absolutely not be tolerated. If you cannot conduct discussions in an intelligent, civil, manner, then you are not welcome here.

Also, if you want to post anonymously, fine, so long as you do not do so merely to violate the site's rules, or to engage in sock puppetry. But please choose a name other than the plain "Anonymous." Be creative. Use your imagination. :-)

And one other thing: If you want to create a new board, please make sure that one doesn't already exist for it. There were COUNTLESS redundant boards whose posts I had to merge chronologically when I took over. Remember that a movie could be in one or more Genre, so check all the ones that apply. You can also use the Keyword Search tool in the left hand tool bar to search for a board with a given title or key word. Please use it. Thanks. :-)

If you have trouble navigating through the Sink, here is a breakdown of the subtopics:

Moderator Archives
Instead of a Bug the Moderator board, what I’m going to do is let people communicate with me on the Movies Main board, just as on PM, and after those conversations die down, move them to the Archives. Right now there are two subtopics in the Archives: One of posts made during Jake’s tenure as Moderator, and one made during mine. I've also created this set-up in PM as well.

People in Film
This is to talk about actors, filmmakers, etc. Not only is this for discussing specific people (Kevin Bacon, Denzel Washington, Roman Polanski), but also discussions pertaining to people in general (“Are Actors Overpaid?” “Options Clauses in Actor Contracts” “Directors who Work with the Same Actors”). Please do not start a board here to say, “Hey, did you hear this actor will be in this upcoming movie?” That sort of post belongs on the board for that movie, because it’s specific to one movie. The Create a New Conversation button is active on all the Genre boards now, so if there is no such board, create one.

Movie Lists and Awards
Best Movies, Funniest Movies, Movies We’re Not Looking Forward To, Best Credits Sequence, Tough Gals in Movies, AFI’s Best Films, Premiere Magazine’s Best Films, the Oscars, the MTV Movie Awards, etc. You get the picture.

Sequels, Remakes & Adaptations
These boards are to discuss sequels, remakes, and adaptations as a subject. As with People in Film, please do not start a board here to say, “Hey, they’re making a live-action version of Akira!” Instead, start a board for that movie. Boards here are for discussing things like “These are sequels I like, and these are ones I hate”, or “These are my top 5 cartoon adaptations”, or “What aspects of a novel do you guys think should always be retained in a movie adaptation, and which should be changed?” These are boards to discuss such movies as a group.

Movie Websites
Pretty self-explanatory.

DVD & Easter Egg Topics
Also pretty self-explanatory. These are mostly DVD topics, but there is also a topic for Movie Easter Eggs, since it’s similar in theme. Incidentally, the topic “Widescreen or Pan-N-Scan Format?” is linked to in the Roundtable Discussions area (see below).

Recurring Nits, Patterns, Clichés, & Trivia
These boards are for recurring trends, patterns and other miscellaneous quirks that we notice in films, such as recurring nits, homages, rip-offs, movie "rules", clichés, appearances by the number 47, cap codes, trailers, the way Halloween is referenced in Scream and vice versa, etc. Again, please do not post here just to talk about one movie.

Roundtable Discussions
This is where we discuss our opinions of various aspects of the movie industry, such as the quality of movie soundtracks, the definition of science fiction vs. fantasy, the overall health of the industry, whether nudity in certain films is necessary to the plot or just gratuitous, the future of digital filmmaking, the merits of various MPAA ratings, etc. Again, this is not a single-movie board.

Games
Boards in which Nitcentralians’ partcipation is purely for fun, such as guessing movie quotes, scrambling or combining movie titles, etc.

Help Me Remember This Movie
This is one single board that just didn’t seem to fit into any other category.

Please understand that in regards to areas like People in Film or Sequels, Remakes & Adaptations, when I set certain parameters for the creation of boards there, and say don't create this type of board there, I’m not criticizing or pointing the finger, because in cleaning the boards, I found that I myself made posts or created boards that I ended up moving or merging with other boards too. Becoming a moderator has lent insight into the need to keep boards organized that I might not have appreciated as much solely as a user. (Moderator, organize thyself.) Please take the time to look through the Sink, and see how everything is organized. And if you have any problems with this set-up, or have any polite criticisms or suggestions for improvement, do not hesitate to voice them. :-)

MODERATOR NOTE: I have placed the three films based on Dan Brown's novels into their own category, titled Dan Brown's Robert Langdon films. I know this may sound like a clunky title, and I hope people are able to find those films (Remember, you can use the site's Search engine if you don't initially find it), but it was all I could do, as the titles of those films, like the novels, do not center around a recurring word or phrase.

I have also done the same for the Final Destination films.

Hey, Luigi? There's some complaints over on the Classic Trek "Tomorrow is Yesterday" board.

Apparently some people can't post even with their login.

Luigi: there are a couple of guys whining vociferously commenting that they are unable to post on the Movies board and others. Their passwords don't work and they can't use the "non member option" (whatever that is). Are you able to help them? Their names are Tim McCree and John E. Porteous, and Daniel Phillips might be having a similar problem. At least one of them says he has emailed you in the past and had no reply, so I assume it may have spun off into your Junk box.

If you need to follow the conversation it's in the Doctor Who board, under New Series/Season 5/Cold Blood. Thanks!

Can you give me their IPs so I can see if they're posting from IPs that are blocked on my boards? That way I can unblock them.

As for complaints that I'm "lying down on the job" or haven't answered emails, I can assure all who are reading this that I did not receive any emails at either of my two active addresses regarding Nitcentral problems, so I have not "ignored" any.

Thank you for your assistance, Callie. I apologize to anyone who's had trouble accessing my boards.
