Michael Smerconish is back on The Big Talker, 1210 and so is "The Killer Tomato Contest." And this year, Americans are bonded more than ever before to take aim at a common enemy. Our Third Annual Killer Tomato Contest will take place just a few weeks before September 11th. This event brings people together to pay tribute to the heroes of 2002 while also giving Philadelphians the chance to blow off some steam and have a little fun.

During KTC 3, we'll search for the Delaware Valley's best homegrown tomatoes and award prizes in categories including size, shape, color, ripeness and creativity. A panel of celebrity judges and gardening experts will judge the tomatoes and then award a flyaway trip-for-two to an exotic location for the grower of the most perfect tomato.

What about the losers? Their tomatoes go to a very good cause. Gardeners whose tomatoes don't make the cut will get to toss those red, ripe babies at a huge billboard with a seedy, despised killer's face covered by a target.

The brainchild of 1210's Michael Smerconish, The Killer Tomato Contest started in 2000 and continued in 2001 with one of Philadelphia's most notorious and cowardly killers... Ira Einhorn.

The entire event, from judging to flinging, will take place from 3pm to 7pm on Thursday, August, 15th at the Arroyo Grille in Manayunk with THE BIG TALKER 1210 - WPHT broadcasting LIVE with MICHAEL SMERCONISH from 3pm-6pm."


My comments:

On the whole KT3 debate, the thought of using Bin Laden and his henchmen as targets for homegrown vegetables is abhorrent. Many of us lost family members and friends on that horrible day. Even the suggestion of such an activity trivializes the loss and sacrifice of 3,000 Americans and the millions who mourn them. If WPHT goes ahead with this idea, I will be the first person to write a letter to the Philadelphia newspapers to condemn the event. Whether it's 1 death or thousands, I find exploiting murder for promotional gain (Smerconish) and financial gain (WPHT) utterly despicable. What's next- a burning at the stake? I wonder if Smerconish would pick Bin Laden for this •••••• gimmick if he had lost loved ones in the World Trade Center. The callousness and cruelty at WPHT is truly disgusting.
