Unshelved

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Comic books: Comic Strips: Unshelved
By Merat on Thursday, April 24, 2003 - 11:43 pm:

I just found out about this online comic strip today, and it is absolutely hilarious. However, I work in a library at the reference desk and intend to become a librarian, so I can VERY easily relate to much of what happens in the strip. Someone who is not a librarian please take a look and tell me what you think. It helps to start from the first stip.

I've only read the first two or three weeks' worth. It's okay. It doesn't bowl me over. My biggest problem is that the art is too minimalistic for my taste. But then, "Peanuts" tended to be minimalist, too. I dunno. There's just something about it that doesn't grab me. Sorry, Merat.

I liked the March 5th strip, though.

By Benn on Friday, April 25, 2003 - 5:04 am:

The further along in the month of March I get, the better the writing of the strip gets. The art does leaves something to be desired as far as I'm concerned. But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. And probably am.

BTW, Merat, I have bookmarked the site. I've just read up to the April 4th strip. As it progresses, the writer (is that Bill Barnes?) seems to improve and to get a better handle on the characters. The art, by Gene Aumbaum, I assume, still doesn't do anything for me. It's too stiff is what I've decided the problem is. And you've got that 12 year kid with the hair in his eyes. He looks like he has two noses, or both ears showing and no nose.

One nit I found in the April 4th strip. One lady is discussing with the Dewey the fact that Koreans eat dogs and pigs. She comments that some animals are okay to eat, while others aren't. Dewey challenges her by asking her if there is a list of what animals are okay to eat. She suggests the Bible. Dewey says, "No." Actually, the Bible does provide such a list. It's how Jews determine what is Kosher.

Okay, so the next strip confirms that the Bible provides such a list. Ignore my nit for the April 4th strip.

"Dewey, please stop subverting the patrons." :)

Just a note, Benn's comments refer to the April 4, 2002 strip.

I didn't know there were any other April 4th strips in "Unshelved"'s archives. How far back does this strip go?

By ScottN on Monday, April 28, 2003 - 5:58 pm:

Benn, I was distinguishing it from the 4 April 2003 strip.

By Benn on Monday, April 28, 2003 - 8:38 pm:

Ah. Thanks. You're right. For some reason I thought the strips I was reading were from this year. Maybe old age is creeping up on me.

By Benn on Monday, April 28, 2003 - 9:41 pm:

Interesting. The April 21st, 2002 strip makes a reference to the Vertigo Comic book series, Preacher. Dewey holds a copy in his hand.

I, too, have only gotten through the first couple of month's worth of the strip (2002, mind you). I like it, although I tend to agree with Benn about the art. On the other hand, in defence of the art, I do like some of the references and sight gags worked in here and there.

By Benn on Thursday, May 01, 2003 - 7:32 pm:

Yeah, I like those, too. I especially appreciated the Preacher reference. I may not be a fan of the comic book, but it was still cool to see it referenced.
