Need some advice about a person's (not me) kazaa obsession

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: The Kitchen Sink: Media (TV, Print, Sports, etc.): Internet More or Less: Need some advice about a person's (not me) kazaa obsession

I somehow screwed up the location of the original thread so badly I had to delete it. Here's the reposting:

I'm posting this as 'anonymous' as to protect the identity of the person in question. I'm not out to 'get' this person, but want to ask some advice.

I have a problem with another peron who is became addicted to kazaa. It's to the point where the person in question has become obsessed with searching for and downloading mp3's. It's so bad that I am often afraid to get up to go to the bathroom as by the I come back this person in question may very well be on the computer using kazaa (even if the delay is only 2 mins). Often while I'm using it, the person in question will be constantly looking in the room right at the computer and doing things like loudly playing music I can't stand, almost as if to annoy me so badly that they 'chase me off'. It's to the point where only if the person is 'out' can I use the computer in peace.

I have thought about simply deleting it, but then the person in question would just put it back.

Normally I would never post a person problem like this to a message board, but I am at a loss.

Here's a word of advice - download Ad-Aware whenever you can. I think kazaa is one of the legendary Spyware programs that attempts to access your computer's details.

Anonymous,

First the RIAA paranoia. Don't post again unless it is from a weird place like a computer room in a local college library. Your IP address can be traced back. Only Phil, and people Phil allows, is supposed to have access to it. One court order and Phil must decide if should be held in contempt or let them discover your friend via you.

Yeah, it probably won't happen, but if you don't buy a ticket in that lottery you can't win it.

First off, you need two computers. If finances are a problem, use the addiction to your advantage. That other person can fill up their hard drive or build a CD library full of songs they won't listen too. There is not anything you can do about their problem. It is his or her problem. Short of leaving him/her (over reacting IMHO) there is nothing you can do that is effective. (Hiding the Alcoholic's bottle will only force him/her to be more creative in hiding it from you.)

Eventually they will tire of it. Whether that is two days or twenty years, who knows. In the meantime, count your blessings for there are worse addictions.

K, thanks for the advice.

You are right that the persons addiction could be much worse, thank you for putting it into perpective for me. I guess all I can really do is to 'tough it out' as in time the person will tire of it, and will move on.

As for the paranoia, I guess it would be a good idea to remove this 'thread' , just in case as I don't want to cause trouble for Phill or the person in question.

Again, thank you for your advice.

I had Kazaa for a time. Ad-Aware did end up removing it, though.

BUT, if said person is using Kazaalite, as MarkN and I do, Ad-Aware will NOT remove it.

The lite version is spyware & ad -free.

I love it, too; I can see how it's addicting. Whenever I'm at my computer (which is usually, as I have a lot of homework, or I'm surfing), I listen to my MP3s and MPEGs.

But, yeah, have them see someone about it.

Anonymous' friend needs a very slow computer with a very small harddisk and a very slow internet connection. Not much fun with MP3.

Electron, I had my last hard drive at the time of Napster. Just that, and a 56K connection.

I still downloaded like heck.

Arr Matey,

The RIAA will get IP address of those it downloads a song from. So ye swabs ye be setting up to not upload and shiver me timbers. Avast there be a problem with no one uploading anything but ye can find a way to wriggle out of the noose lad. Arrr.
