Morons may think this is political because I mention flags. It is not.

I went by a used car lot and saw different flags. I understood the American flag. I understood the Portuguese flag (we have a large Portuguese-American community.) I understood the state flag. There were others I didn't recognize. Among them was, I think, the flag for New Zealand. I had to ask. The sales guy didn't know what country it was but said, "some of dem dere flags is purty."

That got me to thinking. Sure flags were important up to last century so the Field Marshall could determine where his troops were. That need is gone, mostly. Now they are pretty decorations at the Olympics and such.

For the prettiest flag my vote is for Puerto Rico. The Portuguese flag comes in a distant second but gets points for not being centered. I won't limit discussion to national flags of countries that exist, but if you say the flag of New South Wales or of 15th century Poland was pretty can you provide a link? For example Bolivia and Ghana (My monitor shows the green as black. It is prettier than you might see.)

Some flags I don't think were even close to pretty: Any communist county with a red flag and a little yellow emblem in the corner. Old European flags where the main color is white. (Yes, that would include the Olympic flag and I think Switzerland.)

Albania -- not a good loking flag in my opinion.

Stars & Stripes forever!

By Brian Webber on Saturday, October 18, 2003 - 1:50 pm:

Lang: Eh, it's OK. Looks good on a t-shirt. But personally I like flags with animals on them. :) I also like the Colorado state flag, but that's simply becuase Coloradoan are better than everybody else. :)

By ScottN, Proud Californian, even though the Governator was elected, and besides, our Governor can beat up your Governor, so nyah nyah nyah!!! on Saturday, October 18, 2003 - 2:31 pm:

Oh yeah? Well the animal on OUR (CA) state flag can beat up the animal on YOUR state flag any day!

American state flags I'm partial to the Arizona state flag.

Brian Webber,

I guess you like the California state flag (I'd provie a link but I can't bear it.:)) or would you perfer Michigan (It is Staggering.:))?

By Brian Webber on Saturday, October 18, 2003 - 2:42 pm:

Scott: Actually CO flag doesn't have an animal on it.

Berry: Yeah, bears are cool. I also like the Mexican flag. Eagles are cool too. The animal, not the football team. ;) That Mich flag was nice too.

Wow! A bear can beat a "C".:)

Brian, Brian, Brian,

"C" is not for "Colorado." "C" is for "cookie" and that is good enough for me.

The moon sometimes looks like a C but no can eat that.

Everybody sing!

"C" is for cookie that's good enough for me

A donut can look like a "C" but it not as good as a cookie.

"C" is for cookie that's good enough for me!

In my opinion the best U.S. state flag is that of Hawaii, because that's what the real US flag should be...the Jack and Stripes (just kidding)

By Scott McClenny on Sunday, December 07, 2003 - 4:15 pm:

For state flags Alaska has to be up there.A blue
field with the big dipper and north star on it.
Then the Washington state flag followed by the
Minnesota state flag.

For national flags, after the Stars and Stripes
I'd have to say the Canadian Maple Leaf and
the British Union Jack.
I also think the German flag and the Swiss flags are rather nice.

By Paul Joyce on Sunday, December 07, 2003 - 4:40 pm:

The Arizona state flag and the English Cross of St. George. With honourable mentions to the German and US flags.

By SomeDude on Sunday, December 07, 2003 - 5:20 pm:

For me, the Stars and Stripes.. then I have a fascination of the Confederate Battle flag.. mebbe because it was on the roof of the "General Lee" from "Dukes of Hazzard"...
And the AZ flag? it's okay.. though the Utah and New Mexico flag has a place in my heart...
