Ask Not For Whom The Bell Tolls

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: The Kitchen Sink: Media (TV, Print, Sports, etc.): Radio More or Less: Ask Not For Whom The Bell Tolls
Hans Thielman: Do you have any observations regarding overnight radio talk show host Art Bell supposedly ending his show? Here in Seattle, a local radio talk show host indicated he thought it was a publicity stunt on Bell's part. When this local host came out out his commercial break, the bumper music being played was the theme from "X Files."

Phil: Lands, I would have no idea where to even start! I've listened to the show a few times and the people on there certainly sound sincere but, um, I suppose Bell could've been visited by the Men in Black!
By Brian Webber (Bwebber) on Sunday, October 18, 1998 - 4:55 pm:

Bell had received a long series of threats against him and his family. It's possible that's why he quit.

By Maagic on Sunday, October 18, 1998 - 6:12 pm:

He's going to have a short announcement on Monday night's show (Oct 19) and some people say that he may be coming back...

What kinda stuff does Bell talk about, anyway?
The only talk radio I listen to is Dr Laura, but
I'm thinking about trying Bell.

By Mike Deeds on Monday, November 02, 1998 - 10:04 am:

I don't mean to offend anyone with my comments about Dr. Laura. However, serious questions have been raised about not just her past but her present actions. Here are a few items from an article on the Internet (with footnotes): Lew Bishop, Mr. Laura, has not converted, because "there are some things about it [Judism] that I'm still struggling with."1(Lew finally converted in the Summer of 1998)

She claims that she had trouble conceiving her son, Deryk, but Deryk was born within nine months of her marriage. 8

She says that they struggled when Deryk was young, because she was a stay at home mom and her husband had lost his job. Her husband can't remember being out of work at that time and Laura was an adjunct professor at Pepperdine.8

A few weeks before Deryk left to visit his grandfather, Laura told a caller that he "wasn't blessed with grandparents".10

"I am a prophet"5. "I have never, ever said that I was a prophet! That's a total, complete lie," she tells me. ("She said it twice," reports the writer, Janet Wiscombe.)9

Finally, I will put this back on topic. I heard that Art Bell quit because he claimed that he met a time traveller from the future who warned about some danger coming to his family. What a nut! Call Mulder and Scully!

By K.N.D. on Monday, November 02, 1998 - 11:58 am:

Even though I said I wouldn't, here I go. Your
first nit ( these are a lot like nits, aren't
they. Hey, Phil, what about setting up a board?
then this one could get back to its original
topic.) Again, your first nit: The thing about
Judism that they is struggling with is that
Orthodox Judism is against homosexuality, while
she supports it (kind of; as I said, she is
struggling).
2. She has had one natually aborted baby, a tubal.
Possibly this is what she was referring to.
3. Dunno 'bout this one!
4. on his mother's side. She is out of contact
with her parents.
5. See three.
It's not that you hurt my feelings, I just was
correcting you. Possibly I am the one to be
corrected! 8-)

Hi Guys!

Mike Deeds just sent me some stuff on the Dr. Laura business and ask me my opinion. Sorry I haven't been keeping track of things around here. Been really busy.

The upshot of the controversy seems to be: Does Dr. Laura practice what she preaches? I really am not surprised to her this kind of topic arise. It happens all the time and after the question is posed, most of these kinds of articles then rehearse some litany of accusations.

As I responded to Mike, it's been my observation that any piece of information can be slanted in any manner in an article. Without experiencing the events detail first hand, I would find it very, very difficult to come to any meaningful conclusion about the person in question. In addition, I have observed that humans tend to reach the conclusions about other that they need to reach for one reason or another--and often reach them before any investigation occurs.

What interests me most is the genre of article itself. To me at least, what seems to drive the genre is some hopeful motivation that if "the person" doesn't practice what he or she preaches then the advice that he or she gives must be faulty or flawed or "ignorable".

I find this much too convenient from a human motivation perspective. "The person" says things that I disagree with. I determine that "the person" doesn't follow them so I can then dismiss the statements themselves? Does this seem reasonable?

Personally, I have always attempted to assess the value of communications on the basis of what is said, not who said it. I usually try to honestly evaluate if there would be benefit to me adopting the information that I encounter whether it comes from someone I admire or despise.

I do so because I happen to believe that truth is truth . . . whether it thunders from the heavens or slobbers from the mouth of a donkey.

So . . . is Dr. Laura hypocritical?

Maybe . . . maybe not. She's human just like the rest of us. I would be stunned if she didn't have flaws and made mistakes in her past.

Does it matter? Not really. I happen to think she says a lot of good stuff! ;-)

By Jennifer Pope on Monday, November 02, 1998 - 9:14 pm:

It's hard to follow the Chief, but...

Possible solutions to issues #3 and #5:

#3 - This happened when Deryk was five or six (quoted from the stuff Mike sent me. BTW, thanks, Mike!): "But he (Lew) lost his job, and he and Schlessinger hit hard times. When I ask him about that period, he tears up, then turns his head away in embarrassment. "Six years ago, our house was in foreclosure," he says, staring at the floor. "We had no money. We were in terrible trouble." The family's problems were compounded when Bishop nearly died after cardiac arrest."

#5 - I know how much Dr. Laura jokes around; I can't believe this was serious. When such a quote is taken without context its validity should be suspect.

By K.N.D. on Tuesday, November 03, 1998 - 4:33 am:

Thank you, Phil, for saying that. I knew we could count on our Chief to bring
everything into a clearer perspective. I have trouble believing some of the things
that is said about her too, and IMHO, most of them are incorrect, but... to read

By Mike Deeds on Tuesday, November 03, 1998 - 6:06 am:

Phil:

Thanks for your email response and the one on the website. Basically, I agree with you. I hope you don't mind that "The Kitchen Sink" got off-topic. Other people wondered about my off-hand comment so I thought that I should respond and explain myself. I think that Dr. Laura overall does give good advice. However, I think the questions raised about her are similar to the ones about President Clinton - i.e. when you are directly asked about an uncomfortable situation do you lie or do you confess and ask for forgiveness? When Pat Robertson ran for president in 1988, the press found out the his son was born six months after his marriage which obviously implied that he married his current wife just because she was pregnant. When asked about it, Robertson admitted it, explained that it happened before he became a Christian, and that he did the right thing once he converted. This story then became a non-issue. I think she would help herself by admitting her mistakes and that would also take away ammunition from her enemies. The Vanity Fair article in particular made Dr. L seem like Elmer Gantry. I remember Dr. Laura once saying that she would be crazy to tell people to live a certain way if she didn't live that way now. Character does matter.
Finally, back to the real topic - Art Bell. Is the time traveller story I cited from an earlier post true? If not, does anyone know the real story about this guy?

By K.N.D. on Tuesday, November 03, 1998 - 7:41 am:

She did admit it on the air. NOW, I will shut up. :-)

By Phil Farrand on Tuesday, November 03, 1998 - 5:09 pm:

I must admit to listening to Art Bell on my drive homw from work but I think the program's such a hoot! But now with the time change, it's dark by the time I drive home and the AM station that I listen to reduces its power so I can't pick it up anymore. Anyway . . . I said all that to say, I have no idear if the time traveeler story is true. Anybody actually hear him say it on the air?

Corrections on Art Bell and Dr. Laura from their own websites:

Keith Olbermann who hosts "The Big Show" on MSNBC, presented this report, using the bogus "Single Seven" Internet message as his source. While Mr. Olbermann presents this in a humorous way, it isn't so funny, when the issues with Art are so serious.

In case you did not see the BOGUS posting made on the Internet by an Art Bell imposter, here it is, remember this is NOT from Art Bell:

To my loyal fans:

I want you to be the first people to know what is going on and I'm sorry I can't go into more detail but I will give you what I can.

About a year ago I was contacted by a person claiming to be from the future. He called himself Single Seven. He said that he had come back on a mission to find certain species of fruits and vegetables that can grow in hotter climates. To make the long story short, Single Seven told me he had gone back and researched me and said there had been a terrible tragedy that happened to Ramona and me. I lived but Ramona did not. Let me tell you there have been threats on my life in the past and not just empty threats. There are some leaders of this country that find my program to be of great danger to their agenda. The only way that, hopefully, I can change this situation is to do completely opposite of what I would have done that would lead to Ramona's demise.

About a year ago on my first contact with Single Seven he told me some things that would take place within this year and everyone of them has happened exactly as he said. He called me
about a week ago and told me it is time for me to do what I have to do. He gave me one sign that would show me he was telling the truth. I took last week off as you know and the sign came exactly as Single Seven had said. Now that I am off the air there are some things that should happen including one big event. If that event happens, as Single Seven says it will, I will be safe to be back on the air in a few weeks.

You people have been fantastic. I'm sorry I can't tell you more right now but you will find out soon enough. Please pray for me and Ramona, our safety depends on God's help.

Until I talk to you again,

Art

Statement By Dr. Laura Schlessinger On Her Radio Broadcast
1998-11-03

Friends, let's have a little talk...
I was advised not to comment about the photos on the Internet until after a court hearing November 2nd. So I have waited until now to respond.
First, I want to say how much I appreciate the encouragement and support over the past several days from so many listeners. It has made a difficult time easier, and I thank you from my heart.
Many letters and faxes generously say how grateful you are that some of your own past actions are buried in merciful oblivion and will never come to light. Would that I could say the same!
However, it isn't news to my longtime listeners and those who read my books, that I have undergone profound changes over the course of my life--the most important of which is my journey from atheist to observant Jew. In my 20's, I was my own moral authority. The inadequacy of that way of life is painfully obvious today.
At the same time, my early experiences have taught me how much better is it to live by an objective and absolute standard of right and wrong, preferably a standard set by God. And that is the hard-won wisdom I try to pass along to others as I preach, teach and nag.
I want, though, to take a moment to address one specific allegation that is not true. Twenty-three years ago when I was 28, I legally separated from my first husband, filed for divorce in New York State and moved to California. Subsequently, I had a relationship with a man who was both mentor and friend -- a relationship that has never been a secret. I am mystified as to why, 23 years later, this 80-year-old man would do such a morally reprehensible thing.
So, despite acute embarrassment, but with gratitude for my strong religious beliefs and the support of family, friends and so many of you, I'm still here. And you'll find me here today, tomorrow and the next day for as long as you want to keep tuning in.

By Phil Farrand on Friday, February 19, 1999 - 9:44 am:

Dear Anonymous (And why don't you use your name? We're friendly around here!)

The reason that I deleted the messages from the other board is that you seem to be on a tirade about Dr. Laura. Mike already supplied the relevant information on *this* board that you seem to be determined to spread in other places on this discussion forum.

This discussion forum does not exist for you to carry out a personal vendetta again Dr. Laura. It exists for nitpickers to discuss issues. The topic of Dr. Laura was broached here and if the topic continues it should stay here where there is a balanced discussion of the issue.

Please refrain from spraying! ;-)

And as far a Clintonian politics go, this particular topic has strayed far enough from it original intent in the first place, so what's the difference if it goes a bit farther.

It seems to me that the two topics are connected--i.e. how do individuals respond to the events of their past?

It's very simplistic to say that everyone has made mistakes and therefor everyone is the same. It is true that we have all made mistakes and done things for which we grieve (or at least claim to grieve).

The line of demarcation for me is simple: What responsibilities does the individual taken for his or her action? Do they attempt to fix blame for the incidents on internal or external sources?

It's been my limited experience that anyone who is unwilling to "'fess up" and make recompense hasn't really accepted responsibility for the act. (And honestly, isn't this whole business about what it and what is not sex in Clinton affair just plain goofy?!?! Talk about legal nitpicking gone bad! ;-)

By Omer on Sunday, February 21, 1999 - 7:26 pm:

Well, Clinton politics is always fun, but as I see it, it was almost a crusade against the poor man. Mr. Starr spent 40 something million dollars on digging up dirt in Clinton's past and the worst he could do was an affair and a questionable answer on court

OK, again, who's this Laura person and what's her sin?

By K.n.d on Sunday, February 21, 1999 - 8:06 pm:

Omer, she's syndicated in quite a few countries, bu if she isn't in yours, her site is http://www.drlaura.com There you will find archived shows that you can listen to on the Net. Another Embarrassment For Dr. Laura Her Grass-Roots Supporters Aren't What They Seem

By Tomm Looney

Has Premiere Radio Networks and Dr. Laura Schlessinger set up a Richard Nixon-style "Enemies List" and "Dirty Tricks Committee" with the sole purpose of destroying adversaries, namely Tom Leykis?

Buried on page 11 in the letters section of the latest edition of the magazine Talkers, a fabulous behind-the-scenes industry magazine about talk radio, it is revealed that there is an organization calling itself "Friends of Dr. Laura." The purpose of this group is to basically harass radio stations that carry The Tom Leykis Show by spreading vicious lies and gossip - a big Dr. Laura no-no - and by demanding stations that carry Leykis to drop the show because of its "highly offensive material."

The Tom Leykis Show was the program that first revealed the existence of the nude Dr. Laura photos. Leykis had been suggesting for years that these nude photos existed. Bill Ballance, Dr. Laura's ex-squeeze, also granted only one interview to promote the public display of the fully nude Dr. Laura photos, and that interview was with Tom Leykis, heard across the country via the Westwood One radio network and residing in Los Angeles on 97.1 "The FM-Talk Station."

Leykis has regular Dr. Laura updates on his show, complete with the "New Attitude" bumper music. Whenever Dr. Laura has a public appearance, Leykis lets thecountry know precisely where the Queen of Mean will be, and he offers money to anyone who happens to snap a photo showing a friend or relative indecently exposing himself to Laura and/or her teenage son, Derek.

The fulminating "Friends of Dr. Laura" missives, sent out to stations carrying The Tom Leykis Show, threatened to "move forward with our plan to publish the names of your sponsors supporting this perversity in an advertisement in The News & Advance" should these outlets not blow up The Tom Leykis Show.

In these letters to radio stations all over the country, this "Friends of Dr. Laura" directive also included a nasty piece of fictional gossip about Leykis. "Mr. Leykis is not in a strong position to criticize the morality of others, given his own scrapes with the law," vents the letter. "We have attached verification of Mr.
Leykis' record of domestic violence as well as transcripts of the programs in question."

Of course, there was nothing attached, since Tom Leykis has never been convicted of anything related to domestic violence. One program director - Gary Burns of WLNI/Madison Heights, Va. - told the organization in writing to go screw itself. Cool it with the threats, warned Burns, or he'd pull the Dr. Laura
show off of his station.

Seems like Mr. Burns had Smithers do a little research as well. It was revealed by Burns in Talkers that the organization calling itself "Friends of Dr. Laura" is actually one person: Nicole Raven, the promotions manager at Premiere Radio Networks - the syndicator of the Dr. Laura program.

Raven works on the fifth floor of the Sherman Oaks office of Premiere Radio Networks. Dr. Laura also broadcasts her show from the fifth floor of the Sherman Oaks office of the Premiere Radio Networks.

Cowabunga, dude! Damned if the "Friends of Dr. Laura" isn't actually a friend of Dr. Laura. (Presuming, of course, that Nicole Raven is a friend of Dr. Laura and wasn't requisitioned to head up the Dirty Tricks Committee due to an order from the law offices of Haldeman, Erlichman & Schlessinger.)

In all fairness, Raven may have actually found herself mired in a genuine moral dilemma. If she said no to the Premiere Dirty Tricks Plumbers, she may have lost her job.

Now that Lauragate has been exposed, Raven no doubt feels like Bebe ReBozo the Clown.

Premiere Radio Networks was contacted for the purposes of this literary masterpiece. Sources at Premiere would only comment on the condition of anonymity.
"There is a cancer growing on the Premiere Radio Networks," offered one Premiere deep throat. The Lewinsky also mentioned that the late President Richard Nixon called from down under on his hell phone to encourage Dr. Laura to "hang in there," and that Nixon mentioned that he was "looking forward to meeting Dr. Laura in the future."

Talkers is available on the Internet at www.talkers.com. You can also contact the magazine the old-fashioned way by punching up (413) 567-3189.

Nice try, Doc.

Howard Issues Stern Warning To Dr. Laura

By Tomm Looney

"Dr. Laura, if you sign with Eyemark, I'll devote a portion of my daily program to you, you filthy b***h," threatened the Howard Stern warning from Thursday morning's show. "I'll interview your ex-husband, and at the end of my TV show every week, I'll give out the Internet address where they can view your ugly nude pictures," Stern terrorizingly titillated.

Stern was reacting to an exclusive by the fabulous John Mainelli in the distinguished New York Post. Mainelli reported that Howard Stern is furious over a Post story last week that the syndicator of his weekly TV shows has promised to gag Stern if the Queen of Midday Mean signs a TV deal with them.

"Let me tell you something about 'controlling me' so that she and her people are very clear on this,'" warned. "A, no one controls me, and B, Eyemark (CBS' syndication arm) can kiss my tuckus if they think some company ... can control me."

Mainelli reports that Eyemark and Paramount are said to be negotiating with Dr. Laura to star in a daytime TV talk show to debut in fall 2000.

Last year, KFI's Dr. Laura said she turned down a TV gig with Eyemark because she couldn't stand to be associated with Stern.

"Well, honey, if you were concerned about me before, why not now?" Stern interrogated. "If I'm OK all of a sudden, she's obviously a desperate woman who's ready to throw her alleged morality out the window. Is Eyemark also that desperate?

"She's the biggest hypocrite on two feet," added Stern. "Here she is again using my name to launch this horrible show that no one will watch because she's a bore."

Margolis: What’s The Frequency?

By Lynne Margolis

Things that make you go hmmm … there are so many, sometimes it’s hard to know where to start.

But thanks to Dr. Laura Schlessinger, I know just the place.

Seems Dr. Laura, the now reigning queen of amazingly •••••• lawsuits, can’t allow her mouth to be contained by a mere radio show - a not-so-great radio show at that. (Would you take advice from a woman who can’t tell the difference between being defamed by someone else and doing it herself?) But before we get to the topic of her latest rant, let’s review the syndicated talk-show host’s recent legal history, shall we?

First, she reacts in typical fashion when 20-year-old nude pictures, including one described as a typical "money shot" - legs spread, you know the rest - appear on the Internet, thanks to her "mentor" and former paramour, whom she reportedly frolicked with while still married to someone else. She did what others (including our illustrious president) might do in such a situation: Denied the shots were of her.

Then she tried to slap the Web site that purchased and posted them with an injunction to prevent their continued use. Despite the fact that such action amounted to an admission that the pics were, indeed, of her, she persisted. The court did not. The First Amendment, thankfully, won out over the embarrassment of someone who moralizes almost daily against both pornography and adultery. (As an aside to anyone thinking of accepting an invitation to pose naked, suggestively or not, just remember … you may not be famous today, but down the road, those pics could be worth something. And in today’s climate, people would sell their parents for a million bucks, much less titillating shots of an old flame or photographic model.)

OK, so we’re at strike one for Dr. Laura; runner batted in for the First Amendment.

Then, in what has to be the height of audacity, Dr. Laura sues a California surf shop owner for his reaction to her on-air comments condemning him for displaying a skateboarding magazine she deemed pornographic.

After she defamed him to about 18 million people, the reported listenership of her syndicated radio show, his response was that his store does not condone pornography and that she mischaracterized the incident in question. All he asked for was a retraction. Nope, said Dr. Laura, but here’s a lawsuit instead. Dr. Laura sued the shop owner, accusing him of defaming her by stating in public that her claims were lies. She sued him. Over a magazine that would have remained so far below the world’s radar, not even her kid would have noticed it in the store had she not made a big issue (no pun intended) out of it.

So Dr. Laura, riding her moral high horse, picks on the little guy for something that, considering her history, might have been better left untouched. She sued him - seeking damages of more than $1 million, according to the Orange County Register - before he had a chance to sue her. Lawyers must love this woman. Of course, he counter-sued, contending she slandered him, invaded his privacy, painted him in a false light and intentionally harmed his business. The surf store dude is seeking more than $4 million in damages.

Fortunately, judges aren’t as gullible as Dr. Laura might like to think. Last Wednesday (Dec. 8), an Orange County judge tossed her case right out of court.
According to the Register, the wise judge said that not only did she fail to prove she had a case, but that the shop owner was exercising his right to free speech on a matter of public concern when he refuted her charges.

Hah. So there, Dr. Laura. His suit still stands, and that decision against her will most likely give an enormous boost to his case. Apparently, we now have something on the books called anti-SLAPP law. SLAPP stands for Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation, and it was designed to protect the little people from just such lawsuits by the big people who would attempt to squash said little ones (read: unfamous, unwealthy, just average Joes and Janes). Not only was it bad enough that she said what she did about the surf shop on the air, she also added insult to injury with her lawsuit.

In what seems like a unsatisfied need for publicity, Dr. Laura has lashed out against other people and institutions. Recently, she attacked the American Library Association for pro viding a link (actually, it takes about four links to get there) to a Web site designed to frankly answer teenagers’ questions about health, relationships, drugs and sex.

The renowned and respected Columbia University Web site, "Go Ask Alice," provides a necessary public service to an important segment of our population. Yet Schlessinger has condemned the ALA for condoning pornography and making it too easy for children to access information about sex, thereby turning them into mini objects of desire ripe for plucking by sicko pedophiles.

Um, yeah, well the playground at elementary school could be an easy place for children to access information about sex, too. Should we shut down the schools, leaving every kid to be home-schooled and possibly unsocialized?

Dr. Laura’s smearing of the ALA resulted in killing a deal Toys R Us was making with the group to help fund the construction of children’s reading rooms in libraries throughout the country. The skittish toy giant reportedly decided not to contribute $250,000 and admitted it was because of Dr. Laura. So basically, she helped squelch funding for a project that could have created a place for children to read about subjects she might deem safe.

So in her zeal to prevent children from what she considers pornography, Dr. Laura has sued a Web site and a small business owner, and damaged the cause of furthering literacy in this country.

Now she wants Floridians to drive around with license plates bearing the words "choose life." These plates would be optional purchases, of course, with proceeds used to help pregnant women who choose adoption instead of abortion.

Now think about this for a minute: Our large-mouthed talk show commentator led the moral assault on a Web site designed to give women of child-bearing age pertinent information about subjects such as birth control. Information that might prevent them from getting pregnant. Now she wants to moralize about what decisions they might make once finding themselves in that state.

A license plate is no place for that message. That’s what bumper stickers are for.
If the state should agree to print such plates, pro-choice advocates should jump right up and demand equal plate time. And if they do, perhaps the folly of using state-issued property as an instrument to address touchy sociopolitical issues will become evident.

There’s nothing wrong with using license plates as a way to raise money and convey messages about preservation of natural or historic resources; only those bent on destroying such resources could possibly be offended by the promotion of such causes. But to start getting into issues of morality, issues that tend to be the domain of religious groups … well, it scares me she would even suggest such a thing, not to mention using her show to exhort Florida listeners to call their legislators and express support for this cause.

But then again, it’s Dr. Laura - a woman who opens her mouth frequently without considering that what she spews out of it might make her look, well, awfully ••••••.

Fortunately, the First Amendment allows her to do so - even though she’s tried to remove that right from others whose use of it doesn’t suit her particular agenda.
What I don’t understand is why anyone could accept what she says as credible, much less that she gets paid so much to do it.

I just wish more microphone time would go to people who know how to ride those aforementioned moral high horses. Looks like Dr. Laura has fallen off a few too many times to sit in the saddle anymore.

As for Art Bell, I'm afraid I've listened to a sum total of one of his shows (the CSICOP one, guest Joe Nickell). Well, and I listened to a little bit which featured the people who supposedly did the real-world ghost hunt filmed as The Entity.

I have zero interest in most of his shows, save when Michio Kaku is on (which I've managed to miss ever time). As some of you might guess from other places on this board, I am doubtful of the claims of most of his guests. Who is more foolish, the fools or the one who listens to them?

By MarkN on Friday, December 31, 1999 - 6:20 am:

Dan, thanks for posting the site for the article. I read it and now have some more reasons to totally hate her. Followers of Limbaugh's BS are called dittoheads. How about for the lovely Dr. Laura? Same, or do they have their own unique nom de plume? Well, it all amounts to the same thing: people too stup¡d to make their own informed opinions so they have to listen to others who are as stup¡d, if not moreso. I defer to MarkM's question of who's the more foolish, too. I also hate it when people make excuses for her. "I don't agree with everything she says, but some of what she says is pretty good," or some such claptrap.

By Dan Fesser on Friday, December 31, 1999 - 9:07 am:

MarkN, Dr. Laura fans are cowards. They prefer to stick their heads in the sand rather than learn the truth about her. Just wait - I am confident that in 10 years or so that her husband and her son will spill more dirt about her. For more info on the witch, check out Quantum Leap: Spinoffs and Movies -- Truth or False?: Real Life Spin-Off = Dr. Laura Talk Radio Show. I put articles there (since Dr. L appeared on one episode of QL as herself) since this topic was closed under the previous moderator.

KAM, I shall do as you requested IF I post any more on this topic. However, I don't anticipate doing so. Dr. Laura fans here are too afraid to debate the facts about her.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Friday, December 31, 1999 - 9:48 am:

Dan, quite bashing Dr. aura fans! I enjoy her show. Not because of what she, personally, does, but because of the fact that she manages to cut the time-wasting morons down to size. I don't always agree with her answers and think that she should be a little more flexible, but it's still entertaining. And that's all it is.

By MarkN on Saturday, January 01, 2000 - 3:36 am:

Matthew, her fans deserve to be bashed, dashed and smashed to bloody pulps. Limblahh's, too. Good for you not to believe or agree with everything she says, but she's extremely rude to the morons who call her. On the one hand they deserve it, knowing by now (or they should) what to expect. But on the other she's got no right to put them down without knowing the full specifics of what they want to say. That is if she even gives them the chance to say any of what they want to. She's not even a real doctor of any sort, is she?

I also don't see any entertainment in her show. If I want to barf I'll just stick my finger in my mouth.

Dan, I wrote her and told said I enjoyed her article and she wrote me back, thanking me.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Saturday, January 01, 2000 - 12:52 pm:

Her doctorate is in physiology.

I just sit there and laugh... and laugh... and laugh. Some of these people, quite honestly, need to be yelled at because they're too dumb for anything else to get through. Other times, her response is just as funny. (Then again, there are times when I feel like calling and yelling at her. Like the time she told a married woman with a 6-year-old kid to turn down a 6-figure job because she'd have to be gome on Sunday through Wednesday. I know a lot of kis who see their parents less often than Friday through Saturday. If the woman really needed the job, then she should take it, and work out arrangements with the kid. Laura told her absolutely, categorically, NOT to take it, or the wrath of God be upon her. OK, maybe not, but she does think she's more important than she is.)

Among her angry swipes:

On pressure groups -- "Many gay and lesbian

having my TV show. I need you to understand how
hateful these people really are. It's terrorism to threaten
anyone who might be involved with any of my media
enterprises."

On NBC's "Frasier" -- "Last year they did a satire on

gay...I'm a public figure and that's fair game, but they
took my mother...and made her look like a vicious,
insane bag lady. Did I approach Paramount to say that
that should be yanked? No."

On Bill Bradley -- "He said I should not have a TV show
and that if he had power over it, I wouldn't. But when
[an interviewer] asked him what it was I said exactly, he
couldn't remember anything! I have it on tape. He was
willing to have me shut down and he couldn't remember
why."

On the creators of "www.stopdrlaura.com" -- "This guy
Alan Klein and his website, this is fascism. My mother
grew up under fascism so I know something about it."

Since I have bashed her enough in the past, let me just say that I thought the "Dr. Nora" episode of Frasier was HILARIOUS!

The answer to the ORIGINAL question that sparked this topic from:

Bell's apocalyptic views are well known to listeners of
his immensely popular, nationally syndicated "Coast to
Coast" radio show, which airs locally on WABC (770
AM) at 1 a.m. and focuses on the paranormal.

Bell broadcasts from a trailer parked in the barren
Nevada desert outside Las Vegas.

Bell made headlines in October 1998 when he abruptly
"quit" his show without explanation.

It was later learned that Bell quit the show to care for
his suicidal son, who had been sexually molested when
he was 16 by a male teacher now serving a life sentence
on sex and drug charges.

Bell eventually returned to his show.

Controversy continues to rage at the Paramount Studios lot over Dr. Laura Schlessinger.

Hundreds -- some reports say nearly 1,000 -- Paramount employees and gay activists rallied at the Paramount Studio gates yesterday in protest of the planned TV offering, "The Dr. Laura Schlessinger Show." The conflict over Schlessinger has put Paramount at odds with some its own employees and top producers.

Talk show host and lawyer-activist Gloria Allred of KABC (790 AM)/Los Angeles joined the anti-Dr. Laura crowd in protest.

'Talk': Some things are better left unsaid

By Robert Bianco, USA TODAY

Talk to Me
ABC, tonight, 9:30 ET/PT

Someone should talk to Kyra Sedgwick.

It seems certain this unusually appealing actress, who
sparked such films as Something to Talk About and
Heart and Souls, has what it takes to carry her own
series. But why would she attempt to cart a sitcom as
tired, contrived and humorless as Talk to Me? Did
she take it on as a challenge?

But there's more than enough embarrassment to go around. Start with creator
Suzanne Martin, an Emmy winner for Frasier, who seems to have pieced
Talk together from scripts Frasier rejected. The character she created for
Sedgwick is Janey Munro, a talk host who continually bemoans her single
status.

Janey is the star of a popular New York radio show that she shares with
three blandly interchangeable sidekicks (David Newsom, Max Baker and
Mike Estime). They all make witless comments the others have to pretend to
find amusing - which is the only thing about the show that seems real.

Janey's rival at work is Dr. Debra (Beverly D'Angelo), a prissy Dr.
Laura-type radio psychologist whose catch phrase is "Get over your darn
self." (And yes, Frasier had a similar character, played to funnier effect by
Christine Baranski.) Janey also has a sister, Kat (Mad TV's Nicole Sullivan),
who will eventually work at the station.

Yet another Dr. Laura reference -- I was just on stage crew for a production of The Mikado (it was this past weekend, and it went exceedingly well). For those unfamiliar with the show, there's a famous song in which the Lord High Executioner lists his candidates for beheading should he ever be required to "act professionally." Since the original is loaded with Victorian topical humor incomprehensible to a contemporary audience, many companies performing The Mikado update the list to the time and place of the production, and ours was no different (though we kept the original first verse). The new list was hilariously funny, and the guy who sang it did a spectacular job.

The relevant lines:

That "final answer" game-show host, and also Kathie Lee,
And Jerry Springer, Jenny Jones, and others on TV,
And that radio talk maven who's a pop-psychologist,
Dr. Laura won't be missed -- I'm sure she won't be missed!

This line never failed to get a big round of applause. :-)

VICTORY AGAINST DR. LAURA!!! Check it out:

http://www.radiodigest.com/grind/2000/grind.phtml

RADIODIGEST.COM, April 24, 2000
The Daily Grind
..........

Dr. Laura Schlessinger has settled a slander lawsuit filed against her by the owner of a Costa Mesa, Calif., surf shop.

Tom Moore, owner of the Beach Access surf shop, sued Dr. Laura after she filed suit against him in October. Schlessinger alleged Moore verbally attacked her in public after the popular radio host announced on the air to millions of people that his store sold pornographic material. Schlessinger was referring to a magazine sold at Beach Access called Big Brother Skateboarder. When Moore disputed Schlessinger's allegations that his store acted as a middleman for pornography, Dr. Laura sued him for calling her a liar in public.

Terms of the settlement were not disclosed, but behind the scenes and off the record, Moore's lawyers and friends are claiming victory.

"I've heard he settled for about the amount of a moderately priced Orange County home," said a source that asked to remain anonymous. A moderately priced Orange County home could run anywhere from $650,000 to $2 million.

"She's a bitter old hag and a bully," said Dr. Laura's former KFI (640 AM, Los Angeles) co-worker John Kobylt to his KABC (790 AM, Los Angeles) listeners recently, reacting to this lawsuit and the furor over Schlessinger's upcoming television show and anti-gay comments.

On eBay recently, somebody was auctioning off the copy of Hustler featuring Dr. Laura's nude photos. Schlessinger reportedly jumped on the phone to suits at Premiere Radio Networks, which syndicates her show, and tried to get them to work the phones to put a stop to the eBay auction. The Internet auction house apparently was unfazed by the situation and allowed the auction to continue.

Dr. Laura TV Show Doomed?

"It'll be 13 weeks and out," said a Paramount source to Daily Grind, referring to the Dr. Laura Schlessinger TV show. "They won't spend any money advertising the show. They'll just go on the air quietly in each market they're in, run 13 weeks of shows, then pull the plug -- no promos, no commercials, no billboards. They'd like to cancel it now, but it wouldn't look good. It'll look like they're bending to public pressure. So they'll just cancel the show after 13 weeks and blame it on bad ratings. Mark my words."

The Paramount mole, who wished to remain anonymous, went on to claim that Dr. Laura's test shows have been a disaster.

"It's like the shows are being hosted by Salman Rushdie or some other similar-type public enemy No. 1," continued the source. "We have to keep the tapings top secret to avoid trouble. We have to fool people in order to get a studio audience. What a mess."

Open Letter to Dr. Larua

Dear Dr. Laura,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's law. I have learned a great deal from you, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them.

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. How should I deal with this?

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as it suggests in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

Lev. 25:44 states that I may buy slaves from the nations that are around us. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans but not Canadians. Can you clarify?

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 10:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

Lev. 20:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear prescription glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

One of the things this columnist has learned since first writing the
Daily Grind last March is that no matter what, saying anything about
Dr. Laura Schlessinger is going to trigger a stream of hate mail from
somebody. If we report that another advertiser has pulled out of
Schlessinger's radio show, we're slammed for picking on poor Dr.
Laura, champion of the moral crusaders. If we write something
positive about Schlessinger, we're slammed for supporting that evil,
vile Dr. Laura.

You watch. Even now, a select group of people -- without reading
the remainder of this column, no less -- are typing their little fingers
to the bone because we've used the words "evil," "poor," and "vile"
to illustrate our point. We've been called "anti-gay homophobes" (as
if there are pro-gay homophobes roaming the earth) for reporting
positive news about Schlessinger, and we've been called "faggots"
for reporting less-than-flattering items about her. It's a no-win
game.

I was listening to Q-104.3 (WAXQ-FM) on my way in this morning, and I was waiting for the Radio Chick to come on, with her usual morning blend of humor laced with a bit of raunch. I knew something was amiss when I head three songs in a row. (The Chick never played more than two.) Then, Peter Frampton, playing Guest DJ, came on. No mention was made of what happened to the Chick, or why she was off the air. Frampton was clearly out of his league as a DJ. He seemed a bit nervous in the brief time he was on, and plugged his own new album way too much for my tastes. It seems that Clear Channel, which owns Q-104.3, is switching to a more music-oriented morning format, and will replace the Chick with Jim Kerr and Shelli Sonstein on 10/7. (This just means that Q-104.3's limited playlist will be heard even more often.) I don't know if the Chick was fired, left of her own accord or what.

There have been other developments regarding radio in the New York City region that have got me a bit perturbed over the past few days. The landscape is starting to become more homogenized as each day passes. If you want to hear music with any sort of an edge, it looks like satellite radio (XM or Sirius) is the way to go.

By Adam Bomb on Tuesday, December 14, 2004 - 12:54 pm:

Leslie Gold, aka the "Radio Chick," is going to be heard on Sirius Satellite Radio, beginning January 10. Howard Stern will move to Sirius beginning in January, 2006 (unless Viacom releases him from his contract sooner, which I doubt they'll do.) It now looks like Sirius is the place to go for satellite radio.
Here's a scenario I hope doesn't come about: FCC regulation of subscription radio. Will there be people who will subscribe to it, looking for something that offends them, and then complaining to the FCC, which will attempt to regulate it? Dumb? Definitely. Farfetched? I don't think so.
