Harvey Comics (1941-1994)

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Comic books: Misc. Publishers: Harvey Comics (1941-1994)

Harvey started out publishing a variety of comic books, including super-heroes, but it was as a longtime publisher of humor titles that most people know them.

One odd thing about Harvey Comics is that they would put out multiple books about the same characters (Richie Rich, Sad Sack, Casper) so that it seemed like each week there would be a new comic, or two, featuring some of these characters. An idea that DC & Marvel usually get lambasted over.

Richie Rich, The Poor Little Rich Boy The comic book that proves that little boys who can afford everything are people too. Awwww...

Security around the Rich estate is terrible. In just the three issues I read criminals were able to come and go as they pleased.

The Sunboat Quest Richie Rich Dollars & Cents #66
Richie Rich has used a time machine to get to Ancient Egypt. When he appears there are hieroglyphs on a building, but the next panel he passes a sign that is in English (Nile River No Fishing) & later when he & Pharaoh Tut-Tut are escaping from the dungeons there is another sign in English (To Dungeons).
Richie is also able to speak Ancient Egyptian.

Richie uses an almanac to tell Tut-Tut when an eclipse will happen. When making this prediction to his people Tut-Tut says it will happen at "exactly 12 noon tomorrow" and when it happens he says he'll bring the sun back in "15 minutes".
How would Ancient Egyptians know what 12 Noon means or how long 15 minutes is?

The Carnival Man Richie Rich Profits #6
Crumboley is dognapping Dollar, but on Page 5, Panel 7 he's only holding the top of Dollar's snout so nothing should prevent Dollar from barking.

When Richie & Dollar came upon Crumboley he was dressed in disheveled clothes and later says he hadn't a decent meal since his carnival closed & yet when he steals Dollar, suddenly he can afford to wear fancy clothes & restart his carnival. Where did he get the money?

To make Dollar forget who he is & who he belongs to, Crumboley uses a spray can of amnesia mist.
Do they sell this in stores or did Crumboley invent it?

Since Dollar is the only Dollarmation in the world (he has dollar signs instead of spots) you'd think that there would be plenty of evidence that Dollar is the Rich's dog (photographs, veterinary exams, registration with the American Kennel Club or some such organization). However none of this is shown when they take Crumboley to court & the judge has to resort to the stratagem of 'let the dog decide who his owner is'.

Little Audrey was about a little girl and her misadventures.

Untitled 2-page story Playful Little Audrey #114
Audrey & Melvin ski to school without ski poles.

The World's Nuttiest Invention Playful Little Audrey #114
The cover shows Audrey using the remote control and all manner of sports equipment flying toward Melvin, but in the story Melvin uses the remote and only a special football is controlled by it.

Also the color of the football uniforms on the cover is different from the story inside.

Melvin has put some kind of radio controller inside a football that can come & go by using a TV remote. Of course there must be more than just a radio control inside since the ball can turn in mid-air and stay afloat longer than it should. Surprisingly, no one comments on how heavy this thing should be & the electronics inside are not damaged during a football game.

For some reason the colorist has colored the Riverview Raiders & the Tanktown Tigers uniforms the same colors. Only the stripes on their helmets are a different color (Raiders red, Tigers black).

The Snowmobile Playful Little Audrey #114
Once again Audrey skis without ski poles.

Here she seems more hesitant & uncertain about skiing than in the untitled story earlier in the issue.

Little Dot is about a dot-obsessed little girl & her wacky misadventures.

Uncle Branes' Time Machine Not sure what magazine, my copy is missing that info, possibly Little Dot
Dot snaps a photo of Caleb Snagg and when the picture forms everything, but Caleb's jacket is colored.

Little Lotta is about a tough, plus-sized young girl & her adventures

Round Trip To X Not sure what magazine, my copy is missing that info, possibly Little Dot
Little Lotta & 3 others are taking a tour of a space rocket. Lotta feels tired and lays down to take a nap.
Given that the tour guide only had 4 people on the tour & that Lotta is a large-sized girl I'm amazed that they overlooked her absence. I'm not sure if any of the 3 others were her parents or not.

Half an hour later the rocket is blasted off for Venus.
Riiiiiiiiiiiight. NASA normally runs tourists through it's spacecraft half an hour before launch and never checks over the craft to make sure someone didn't sneak aboard or damage some equipment.

The mission of the unmanned craft was to go to Venus, land, then later take off and come back to Earth. No mention of snapping pictures or checking the air.

The rocket takes off and lands on it's tail fins like a 1950s sci-fi rocket.

Fortunately for Lotta there was a breathable air supply on the rocket and that it came and went so quickly.
(If you're wondering how she breathed on Venus, at the end it was revealed that the rocket didn't actually land on Venus, but actually went forward in time to a future Earth.)

Oddly enough for an unmanned craft the door opened so Lotta could leave.
