The first issue of a three part series based on the TV series Firefly came out a couple of weeks ago. The interior art is excellent, even though the colorist goofed by giving Mal brown eyes (they're suppose to be blue). Too bad I can't necessarily say the same for the covers. Each issue has three different collectable covers done by different artists, each featuring a character from the series. Now, I've seen all the previews and the ones of Mal and Kaylee are excellent while the one of Jayne is pretty good. The others however fall short, with the ones of the Tam siblings being particularly atrocious. Besides being poor likenesses, the one of River makes her look like a slut while the one of Simon is done in monochrome so that it appears as if he's had some test makeup applied for a role on the Munsters.

On page 19 in the lower left-hand panel, Kaylee is wearing a midriff-baring shirt. Yet all the other panels where you can tell, her shirt goes down to her waist.

One wonders why the chick with the big gun in Ott's gang is wearing what look to be stiletto heels. Not exactly practical footwear for a woman of action. And you kind of wonder about the freaky-looking guy with the knives.

Regarding Dobson and his missing eye in the second issue. When I saw the preview on Dark Horse's web site, I thought he was wearing an eyepatch (his comment about how poor his depth perception had become encouraged that line of thought). But from the panels on the later pages, it's pretty clear he's got some kind of cybereye. My question is where did he get it? From what was shown in the show's pilot, Whitefall doesn't have much in the way of high tech.

He's got a ship too, so maybe he went off planet. Whitefall is a moon (of Athens, I think). Maybe he went there.
