Survey: What food(s) will you just not touch?

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: The Kitchen Sink: Questions, Questions, Questions: Survey: What food(s) will you just not touch?
By Snick on Wednesday, April 21, 2004 - 3:31 pm:

Title speaks for itself.

Me: Beets, raw tomatoes. Guts from any animal, although I do like braunschweiger on occasion. Pickled anything, except pickles. Corn tortillas that ain't fried crisp or in a sauce. Otherwise, I'm pretty broad-minded, and a real sushi fan.

You guys?

Gagh and Tube Grubs

By DenIb Qatlh on Wednesday, April 21, 2004 - 8:15 pm:

A Klingon who does not enjoy Gagh!? DoghwI'.

By John A. Lang on Wednesday, April 21, 2004 - 8:55 pm:

Liver.

By Brian Webber on Wednesday, April 21, 2004 - 8:57 pm:

I used to like artichokes. Now I can't stand them. By the same token, I used to despise poppy seeds, now I love poppy seed bagels. Go fig.

By kerriem on Wednesday, April 21, 2004 - 9:26 pm:

Hate hate HATE green peas. I once very nearly horked up a glass of wheatgrass juice in a public food court because nobody told me the stuff tastes exactly like green pea puree. I'm getting the awful taste in my mouth again just remembering it. Ugh.

I'm not overtly fond of most cooked vegetables or any kind of raw fruit, come to that. Something about the texture sets my gag reflex off, well, reflexively. (I know it's not the taste, because I slurp down all kinds of juice no problem. That's what got me into the above wheatgrass mess. Urgh.)

By CR on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 7:24 am:

I'll have to second the liver nomination, and the "pickled anything except pickles" (dill only in my case). As for artichokes, never had 'em, so I can't say whether I'd hate them or not, but I can say I'm not in a rush to find out, either.
What else? I used to hate green peas because as a little kid, I'd only had those awful canned ones. As I got older, I grew to accept fresh sweet peas. (Not rave over them or anything, mind you, but not hate the mere sight of the things.)
Mayonnaise or substances like it. Yuch. Reminds me of rancid milk; you know, the stuff that's sat forgotten in a cup for too long and has solidified to a rubbery texture. (There's something to be said for bussing one's own dishes and rinsing them out, instead of leaving them, say, behind an end table or someplace. Don't ask, I haven't figured out what the person was thinking, either.)
Oh, sour cream chip dip. Or actually any chip dip other than salsa & picante. So, basically, any cream-based dip. (I'm rambling on like a dip! :))
Sauer kraut. Rotten cabbage. Same thing.
Any salad dressing. I'm not kidding. While I'm not fond of the tastes involved, the mere smell of some of them make me... well, they don't have me gagging like kerriem, but they certainly revolt me. Anyway, servers look at me like I'm deranged when I tell them I don't want any dressing with my salad. They also invariably ask if I'd like the dressing on the side. Sigh.

Does coffee count as a food?

Re: liver: \aol{Me too}.
As for artichokes, I'm in the same boat as Webber. Don't know why.

Used to hate sushi, now I love the stuff.

Funny, I love ketchup, I love tomato sauce and tomato soup, and tomato based dishes, but I cannot stand raw tomatoes. I think it's the texture more than the taste.

By Thande on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 8:52 am:

Are you a Vorta, ScottN? :)

(See "Treachery, Faith & the Great River")

By Anonymous on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 9:05 am:

I actually like liver. I agree with you on the catchup thing. I don't like raw tomatoes, but I like catchup.

By Snick on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 10:40 am:

Hey Scott, we're completely alike on the tomato thing. It's more the taste for me, though. Weird, because I love fresh salsa.

A few more I forgot. Cream gravies, potatoes in any soup with "potato" not in the name. Blue Cheese and all its variants.

And from surveys like this, I've found a lot of people detest sauce de Mahon. Don't know why, since a sandwich goes down a lot drier without it. Oh, just remembered. I loathe Miracle Whip.

By ScottN on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 11:07 am:

Miracle Whip is awful. BestFoods/Hellman's mayo is fairly decent.

By Dan Gunther on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 12:26 pm:

CR, you and I are nearly exactly the same! Add most cheeses to that list, and that pretty much sums it up for me. Except for mozzarella on pizza or pasta, not a fan of cheese.

By CR on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 1:22 pm:

I'm more tolerant of cheese than you, actually, though I certainly don't like all kinds, especially if they smell bad or are really soft/mushy. And I don't mean soft as in melted on a cheeseburger or a pizza, but just normally (room temp) soft. I've never really liked American cheese, that processed, artificial tasting, thinly sliced gunk they serve at school lunches and put on just about every fast-food burger in the US.
I don't really like fast food burgers in general, for that matter, but I don't know if fast food should be considered real food. :O

By Polls Voice on Thursday, April 22, 2004 - 3:27 pm:

I think Torque, Son of Keplar is a Klingon-Ferangi hybrid.:)

and if ScottN is a Vorta may I suggest the cyanide chardonnay.:)

By Thande on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 1:24 am:

A friend of mine went from detesting cheese to a Porthos-class fondness for it in the space of 3 years.

By CR on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 7:37 am:

And another thing...
Someone at work reminded me that I don't like mustard, primarily because she was right next to me eating something drowned in a pool of the stuff. (It was some kind of meat, but I couldn't see through the thick, gloppy yellow sludge to actually see what kind of meat.) The smell alone was overpowering. Yeeuch!
I like catchup, though. (Or is it ketchup? Or catsup? You know, that red tomato-based condiment.)

By the way Thande, what converted your friend?

By Influx on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 11:52 am:

Pea pods and baby corns. Any vegetable that hasn't reached at least "toddler" stage should not be served.

By Thande on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 1:13 pm:

Nothing in particular, CR, just time.

Also personally I won't touch anything that's even been near potatoes. :)

By John A. Lang on Friday, April 23, 2004 - 8:39 pm:

Beets

By CR on Saturday, April 24, 2004 - 1:47 pm:

Not a big fan of stir fried veggies, then, eh, Influx? (I'm assuming bean sprouts would also fit your "infant veggie" list.)

By Adam Bomb on Sunday, April 25, 2004 - 9:07 pm:

I haven't had liver since I was a kid. We always fed it to the dog, who loved it. My mother never knew.
I won't eat most vegetables. Especially canned string beans. Nor will I touch cheesecake. Ever.
I've had very good tiramasu (from Romano's Macaroni Grill) and very bad tiramasu, too (from my ex-brother-in-law's wife Nikki.)

By ScottN on Sunday, April 25, 2004 - 9:45 pm:

When I was a kid, my mom served sauteed chicken livers once a week (my dad loved the stuff). We hated it. My mom always said the same thing, "You have to at least taste it." Finally, my sister said to her, "Mom, I'm 15. I've tasted it every week for years. I don't like it. I'm never going to like it."

She never used that line on us again. At least with the chicken livers.

By Brian Webber on Sunday, April 25, 2004 - 11:16 pm:

*LOL* I like your sister Scott. She's my kind of smart-ass. :)

By Influx on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 2:25 pm:

CR: Not a big fan of stir fried veggies, then, eh, Influx? (I'm assuming bean sprouts would also fit your "infant veggie" list.)

Actually, I love stir-fry, and that's exactly what I was thinking about when submitting the above. If they have stir-fry in the cafeteria and I see peapods or baby corns, I go for something else. Or if really desperate, I have to pick them out. Bean sprouts, no problem.

By CR on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 - 9:09 am:

I just ate at a Chinese restaurant yesterday, and on the buffet table, someone who seems to be your exact opposite had picked out all the pea pods and baby corn for him- or herself, leaving the rest of the veggies for everyone else. Weird.

By Snick on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 - 9:45 am:

I also love peapods and baby corns in stir-fry, can't stand bean sprouts.

By CR on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 - 11:29 am:

So you're the one who picked them out! :O

By Snick on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 - 12:12 pm:

Nah, last place I went to was Dragon City, and that was a takeout order. Coulda been my evil twin.

By Rona on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 6:22 pm:

You should not eat white sugar, flour, and junk food. Drink water and not soda. Fish and not fatty meat. Stop clogging your arteries with fast food.

By Snick on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 - 10:28 am:

BZZT! You missed the point of this board, Rona. It's not about what others shouldn't eat, it's entirely about what we ourselves logically/illogically will not. Take the soapbox and stand in the corner please. :-)

By ScottN on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 - 12:19 pm:

Guess what, Rona? I happen to *LIKE* white sugar, flour, junk food, soda, and fatty meat.

If I have a heart attack, that's my business, not yours.

By Josh M on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 - 1:19 pm:

Black olives. I hate 'em.

By Anonymous22 on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 - 7:09 pm:

peas and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

I went to a ymca camp once and that was all they fed me 6 days straight.Maybe a glass of milk, that's
36 meals of them.

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, October 20, 2005 - 8:56 am:

Black olives? I love 'em on pizza, in sandwiches, and in salads.

By Snick on Thursday, October 20, 2005 - 10:22 am:

As do I, as well as just eatin' them right out of the can.

By ScottN on Thursday, October 20, 2005 - 10:27 am:

Josh, I'm with you on the Olive front.

By Dana on Thursday, October 20, 2005 - 9:23 pm:

Carrots- gack! I ate carrot salad one time and got sick to my stomach. Ever since then, I can't eat 'em.
Oh, and ANYTHING on Fear Factor!
