Im fed up with the market/pop oriented garbage companies try to foist on us. This includes but is not limited to spyware, "toolbars", registration reminders, seizure inducing ads, poorly written software/junkware, copy protection schemes that mess with operating system files and sometimes steps way over the line (the Sony rootkit fiasco being one example), unwanted programs set to start up automaticly without the user's consent, stale and unoriginal hollywoodesqe "skins", the list goes on. Blech! X{

GUI bloat. I want an OS to just be that-an OS. I'm tired of geegaws and doo dads that serve little but to crash and sometimes take the whole ****ing OS with it.

Try Linux or BSD. In both cases, your GUI is optional, and you control what goes in.

Will it not read anything you stick in it at all, or is it not just playing DVD movies?

If it's not reading anything at all, not even data CD's and DVD's, it's probably not connected right. Make sure the cables are all snug, and also make sure that if it's the only drive on the cable it had jumpers set to MASTER. If it's sharing a cable with another drive, then if the old one is set to master, this one should be set to SLAVE.

If it's just not playing DVD movies, have you tried more than one movie? Checked for spyware? Made sure the software is looking for the movie in the DVD drive and not in another drive? If all else fails, see if you can find the K-Lite Codec pack (google should turn it up easily) and follow the instructions and install it and see if the included Media Player Classic will play your DVD movies. If not, there's something extra screwy going on, and you might just be looking at an OS reinstall.

There are now really annoying ones that are these emoticon ones that yell "Helloooooooooo" over and over. I hate those things with a passion. They tend to encourage me to close the window and stop going to sites that use them.

There was a similar flash add that would bleat out like a valley girl (i think it was for those same $tupid emoticons the previous poster mentioned). This was especialy annoying when these ads appeared on Youtube for a while last year.
