Shading and Symbolism

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: The Kitchen Sink: Trek Related: Trek Discussion: Shading and Symbolism
By The Thinker on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 - 11:06 am:

I've developed a curiosity about the look of Star Trek. Specifically, symbols such as the Borg banner in Descent(TNG) and its portrayal of a red hand.

Is that the hand that assimilates, or is that the hand of Lore?

Just how does a "CUBE" represent perfection for the Borg?

Do the large ears of a Ferangi represent being able to hear good business transactions taking place?

The imagery of Star Trek including ship designs, emblems, text, and many others are waiting to be nitpicked to the nth degree.

Please! Please! Your insights are wanted.

If there is a post like this already, my apologies, there are too many topics and sub-topics here to look through them all.

I think the Borg symbol is more of a claw.

Isn't a cube a perfect geometric shape?
Any mathematicians out there?

The cube is one of the five "regular" solids. The other four being: Tetrahedron, Octahedron, Dodecahedron, and Icosahedron.

in english ScottN, in english...

Tetrahedral-4 sides
Octahedron- 8 sides
Dodecahedron-???
Icosahedron -????

By ScottN on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 - 11:06 pm:

Tetrahedron - 4 faces, all identical equilateral triangles
Cube - 6 faces, all identical squares
Octahedron - 8 faces, all identical equilateral triangles
Dodecahedron - 12 faces, all identical regular pentagons (didn't anybody read The Phantom Tollbooth? :))
Icosahedron - 20 faces, all identical equilateral triangles

Love the Phantom Tollbooth, Scott!
Actually, to represent perfection, the Borg would need to use the Golden Rectangle as the design of their ship. This was a rectangle of perfect (and mystical?) proportions believed by the ancient Greeks. In fact, the Parthenon in Athens is based on this design.
The golden rectangle can even be found in nature, with the proportions of flower petals and pinecones, et al.

By TomM on Monday, August 09, 2004 - 10:45 pm:

The golden proportion was decided by the Greeks to represent perfection because if you constructed a square using one of the longer edges (b), the sides of the resulting rectangle, b and a+b, are also in the golden proprtion.

f= a/b = b/(a+b)

A "perfect" borg ship would be a series of graduated cubes forming a helical spiral, combining the "perfections" of the cube and the golden triangle. It would wind up looking very much like a nautilis shell.

That would've been hard to do on a syndicated TV series. ;-)
