Flag customs

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: The Kitchen Sink: Questions, Questions, Questions: Flag customs

Moderator - I'm not sure where to put this - the boards in the topic vault only mention "Pretty" and "Ugly" Flags (which is a matter of taste), so I created this new. If it fits elsewhere, please move it.

Anyway, I caught the singing-of-the-anthem (or humming-it-because-nobody-remembers-the-whole-text :)) part before the soccer game on my TV, and noticed that the Mexicans have a different way to greet their flag, and I remembered the nit in the Val Kilmer Spy movie spoof, so I thought it might be interesting to collect the different customs in different countries.

The US Americans put their right hand over their heart (and maybe remove their hat?) and face the flag when the anthem is played.

The Mexicans put their right hand perpendicular to their heart, palm open and pointing at the ground, with the thumb touching the chest.

The Germans do neither, just stand and sing along (what they remember of the text :)).

Any other nation's customs?

Another US custom for civilians is to stand, place the right hand over the heart and remove hats (if worn) when the flag passes by in a parade.
US Military personnel salute the flag as it passes.

Since we don't do flag parades here, there's no comparable custom.
I don't know what the military does with the flag, since they aren't around in the public very much. I'd have to ask - probably they have to salute it, too.
Once every year or so, the soldiers have to take an oath on the flag, and there's always protests and discussions about it.
