What's In YOUR DVD Collection?

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: The Kitchen Sink: Questions, Questions, Questions: What's In YOUR DVD Collection?
By MarkN on Wednesday, June 08, 2005 - 12:58 am:

Here's mine.

Just download the DVD Profiler from Intervocative.com, register as a member, and then record each and every one of your DVD titles which you can then share if you wish on their forums.

I prefer recording titles by their UPC#, though once in a while you'll come across one that's not listed already but you can still probably find it if you search by the title. And don't be surprised by how many I have cuz some people there have over 4,500 titles listed! Of course, they've been collecting DVDs for years and I only have for the past year and a half or so. At first it was slowly but then started snowballing fairly quickly.

Anyway, if you've got a ton of DVD titles and always wanted to list 'em but just never ever had a chance to get around to it before, well, now you can but of course the more you have the longer it'll take to do so. :)

My Collection. As I haven't updated this list in a few months, it's missing some of my newest aquisitions, like The Godfather Trilogy and Kagemusha. I've had the free version of DVD profiler for some years now, and its excellent! I scan in my DVD's with an old "Cue Cat".

By J on Wednesday, June 08, 2005 - 8:44 am:

As I see there is another JM on these boards, I will go by JAM. So the above post is from JAM.

By MarkN on Wednesday, June 08, 2005 - 11:54 pm:

After watching Star Wars yesterday I went to kill some time at KMart to see if they had any DVD deals and found some on sale for $4 and others for $6. These are the latest ones that I bought:

100 Mile Rule*
Ash Wednesday
Ed Gein
(Fullscreen, and while I prefer widescreen it was only $4 so I figured the hell with it this once)
Eve's Bayou: Canadian Edition*
Gerry
The Italian Job: Spec. Collector's Edition
( 1969; the only $6 title in the bunch)
The Minus Man
Piranha: Special Edition

*Both Canadian versions since that's all the store had but again at only $4 I figured why not.

Kagemusha? That's Akira Kurosawa's movie, isn't it? I haven't seen it yet. Of Kurosawa's films, I've only seen Rashomon, Seven Samurai, The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Sanjuro and Ran. (The latter five I have on DVD. Rashomon is a film I recorded off cable some years back.)

By JAM on Thursday, June 09, 2005 - 3:42 pm:

Yes, it is Kurosawa's film. There is also a documentary with Coppola and Lucas on the supplemental DVD that comes with it. I still haven't seen Sanjuro and Rashomon. The rest I also own on DVD.

By Benn on Thursday, June 09, 2005 - 10:11 pm:

Sanjuro is the sequel to Yojimbo. It's pretty good. I need to get Rashomon on DVD. I'd like to get Kashemuga, as well as more of Kurosawa's flicks. I really like his work.

By MarkN on Saturday, June 11, 2005 - 12:00 am:

Benn, please forgive my ignorance but who's Chauncy Gardner?

By Benn on Saturday, June 11, 2005 - 12:13 am:

Chauncy Gardner/Chance the Gardener was Peter Seller's character in the movie Being There. One of his more quoted lines is "I like to watch." (I've wondered how long it would take before someone asked that question.)

By Nove Rockhoomer on Saturday, June 11, 2005 - 3:20 pm:

The only Kurosawa film I have is Akira Kurosawa's Dreams, which is very good (I thought I should mention it since no one else did) but I have seen and enjoyed The Seven Samurai and Rashomon. I only have VHS, though.

By J on Saturday, June 11, 2005 - 11:00 pm:

Hmmm... in the post where JAM said he would no longer use the name JM because there was another user already using the name, he used the name J, which is the name I've been using for a few weeks, after about a year or so of being an anonymous. I just wanted to point out that I'm not JAM.

*Both Canadian versions since that's all the store had but again at only $4 I figured why not.

How do Canadian versions differ from what you would normally buy? (And if it's not a problem to ask, where are you located? Canada? the US? somewhere else?)

I only ask because as far as I knew, Canadian and US DVD's were usually identical. At least a lot of my DVD's have both US and Canadian ratings and stuff listed on the back cover. (I'm in the US, BTW.)

By MarkN on Sunday, June 12, 2005 - 11:07 am:

And of course I was the first. :) Thanks, though. I'm not familiar enough with Peter Sellers movies to have caught that or else I'd've not asked, obviously.

J, I usually only buy US versions (Region 1) of DVDs since I live in the US (northern California, specifically) so when I saw the Canadian ones at KMart last week I was hoping that they either were the exact same version as the US, only with their own rating system on it, or that they maybe also had a few more minutes of footage or whatever that the US version might lack. Otherwise, I'm not familiar with any possible differences or similarities betwixt Canadian and US versions.

By JAM, who will really try to use only those initals from now on... on Sunday, June 12, 2005 - 10:03 pm:

I guess when you add quotes in a username, it ignores them... Sorry J, JM.

Dreams is an excellent anthology (I think they are based off of dreams Kurosawa actually had) and I also think that The Seven Samurai is required watching. Another movie in my collection that is written by Kurosawa but not filmed by him in my collection is The Sea is Watching.

By Benn on Sunday, June 12, 2005 - 11:55 pm:

It should go without saying, but Seven Samurai was the inspiration/basis for The Magnificent Seven. Meanwhile, Segio Leone's Fistful of Dollars was based on Kurosawa's Yojimbo. Rashomon was Westernized as The Outrage.

By J on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 1:04 am:

J, I usually only buy US versions (Region 1) of DVDs since I live in the US (northern California, specifically)

But Canada is Region 1 too. I think Mexico may be as well. So region coding doesn't even enter into this.

so when I saw the Canadian ones at KMart last week I was hoping that they either were the exact same version as the US, only with their own rating system on it, or that they maybe also had a few more minutes of footage or whatever that the US version might lack. Otherwise, I'm not familiar with any possible differences or similarities betwixt Canadian and US versions.

How do you even know they are Canadian versions? Just because they've got a Canadian rating on them doesn't necessarily mean anything, as several of my DVD's have both US and Canadian ratings on them. It's entirely possible that the company only put the Canadian ratings on because they sell the same DVD in both countries. If it's a lack of a US MPAA rating enforcing your belief (you didn't say if it lacked them), that also is not necessarily evidence. It's possible they didn't bother with the MPAA because in the US ratings are strictly voluntary. (I don't know if they're voluntary in Canada or not. I know in the UK and Aus. they are mandatory.) So a disc with just Canadian ratings could theoretically be intended for sale anywhere in the Region 1 area.

Sorry if it seems I'm giving you the 3rd degree. I'm just really curious, that's all.

I guess when you add quotes in a username, it ignores them... Sorry J, JM

No hard feelings here. I just wanted to point out we were different people is all, not make you feel like you'd stepped on any toes.

By MarkN on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 3:10 am:

Yeah, J, I knew that Region 1 refers to US/Canada, especially since it says that in DVD Profiler when you load titles in it. I just wasn't sure if the versions with the Canadian ratings had anything different at all from those not marked as such that are sold in the US, wondering if maybe the Canucks don't quite allow certain context in their DVDs, not being from there myself.

How do I know they're Canadian versions? Well, cuz six of the seven I bought have small round rating icons that say "Canadian Home Video Rating" printed on them, with different ratings like 14A, PG, and 18A, so I'm guessing that those are pretty good indicators of their being Canadian versions. Of course, I could be wrong based on that alone but I doubt it cuz I'm never wrong, just always right. Well, ok, so one time I thought I was wrong but I was mistaken. :)

And no, I never thought you were giving me the 3rd degree, either, so no worries there. ;)

By MarkN on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 10:47 pm:

Today I bought at Costco:

Baa Baa Black Sheep: Volume One (This was the last copy they had and I was reminded by the back cover that the late Dana Elcar starred in it. I also haven't seen this series since it originally aired and which was later rechristened Black Sheep Squadron, and it turns out that this isn't the complete first season because there are 12 episodes missing, no doubt for a later box set.)

Circuit City:

Casino: 10th Anniversary Edition ($13.99, a dollar cheaper than Costco!)
Jaws: 30th Anniversary Edition (Same price as Costco but without the longbox like BBBS:VO came in.)
Black Hawk Down: Deluxe Edition (On sale for only $16.99 this week! I can't afford it but I've been wanting it and couldn't pass that up.)

By Anonymous22 on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 - 10:50 am:

anyone has 12 0 clock high the series or movie on dvd?

By MarkN (Markn) on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 - 11:27 am:

If you or someone you know has a Costco membership you can get 12 O'Clock High in a dual-package with some other war film from around the same time. Hopefully, the second one would be a title that you don't have yet so you wouldn't have to double dip.

Well, no, not necessarily. Like I said, many of my movies have the Candian ratings on them too, but I assume that's just because the company only put out one R1 version and sells that same version in all R1 countries.

Just for an example, my copy of Star Wars Episode 2 has the Canadian rating on the back, right next to the MPAA rating. They just didn't want to go to the expense of making multiple versions for different R1 countries, I guess.

By MarkN (Markn) on Sunday, June 26, 2005 - 10:38 pm:

Ok. After rereading my message I seemed to be kinda flippant but it wasn't my intent at all so I apologize if that's how I came across. I think I had the idea then (but forgot about it pretty quickly) that what you said about Canadian ratings on DVDs sold here sounds similar to things like magazines having both US and Canadian prices on the cover which, if that's what you were getting at, makes sense to me now about the ratings.

By MarkN (Markn) on Sunday, June 26, 2005 - 11:02 pm:

Anyway, today I got these titles:

Costco:

Sling Blade: Director's Cut ($12.99)

Circuit City:

Rain Man: Special Edition
Hoffa: Special Edition
The Pianist
Field of Dreams: Anniversary Edition
(which is almost ironic considering that I don't care for sports or sports movies but this is more than about sports and besides it was very cheap!)
K-PAX: Collector's Edition (all the above were $6.99, K-PAX not being on sale as the others were)
The Grudge: Unrated Extended Director's Cut (got a steal of a deal at $14.99 instead of $22.99 because someone marked the wrong version!)

Just got the Johnny Quest DVD. Brings back a lot of memories and is still great kids tv.

By MarkN on Wednesday, June 29, 2005 - 11:30 pm:

The one Johnny Quest episode that I remember scaring me as a little kid (but whose name I forget) is the one with some sort of energy being or ghost that made some kinda weird sound, like it was done electronically or whatever. Anyone know what I mean, and what that ep's name and storyline are?

By Influx on Thursday, June 30, 2005 - 1:34 pm:

One thing I loved about JQ Jonny Quest (no "H", that was cool too) -- there was usually a sense of real danger, and the bad guys used real guns! So did the good guys!

I'll have to check my set. I think it was "The Invisible Monster". (Phantom Menace, anyone?)

Brings back a flashback of a class assignment in 4th grade. OK, so it dates me. We had to draw "anything" using Cray-Pas, or Crayon Pastels. I made a monster that looked a lot like the one in that show (after he'd gotten paint spilled on him to make him visible), and some classmates thought I copied it from JQ. I had missed the (first-run) show that weekend so I didn't know what they were talking about until I saw the rerun. Maybe I'd seen it in previews or something.

Chauncy Gardner/Chance the Gardener was Peter Seller's character in the movie Being There.

For which Sellers was nominated for an Oscar in 1980. By the way, I ass-u-me that one's in your DVD collection, Benn.

By Benn on Wednesday, November 09, 2005 - 3:51 pm:

Surprisingly, Adam, I don't have it in my collection. I like the phrase. I'm just not that fond of the movie. I dunno. Maybe if I watch it again, I might change my mind.

Personally I am trying to build an all-anime DVD collection right now just in case.I really do not trust TPTB at Cartoon Network's Adult Swim as they keep mucking with the schedule.Right now I have just eight titles but bought three more from a friend at the Christian Anime Alliance so I should have it up to 11 by year's end.The titles I do have are(in order I bought them):
1.Ghost In The Shell:Stand Alone Complex vol.3
2.Inuyasha vol.8:Kikyo's Wandering Soul
3.Tenchi Moyu:Tenchi In Love 2:Tenchi Forever(movie)
4.Ranma 1/2:Big Trouble In Nekronon China(movie)
5.Gundam Wing:Endless Waltz Special Edition(movie and OVA)
6.Excel Saga vol. 1:The Weirdness Has Begun
7.Escaflowne vol. 1:Dragon's And Destiny
8.Ah!My Goddess vol.1:Always And Forever
I ordered both the Excel Saga and Escaflowne from
AnimeNation but bought the Ah!My Goddess DVD before they arrived. The Excel Saga was in their pre-owned list, cheap but as good as a new one.:)
The ones that I am waiting for are:
*Inuyasha
*Gundam Wing
*Pilot Candidate
As you might tell I really like Inuyasha!:)In fact I want to be able to get at least one DVD from each season including the pilot and finale
along with all four movies,I meant that's how much I like Inuyasha.I also plan on getting more
Ranma 1/2(this time a regular series DVD),Tenchi
Moyu,Excel Saga,etc.
Other titles I am currently interested in are:
*Silent Mobius(my all time favorite anime)
*Dual:Parallel Trouble Adventure
*Sailor Moon
*Revolutionary Girl Utena(got the first volume of the manga and liked it)
*The Dirty Pair(not what some of you think,it's a sci fi/comedy/adventure,etc.about a pair of female trouble shooters who are nicknamed The Dirty Pair because they leave everything messier than what they found it)
*Serial Experiments Lain
*RahXephon
*Urseui Yatsura(sp?)Rumiko Takahashi's earlier series
*Maison Ikkoku another Rumiko Takahashi series
*R.O.D The Tv
*Gad Guard
*Outlaw Star(a show that the Evil People at AS shoudl have never cancelled IMO)
*Neon Genesis Evangelion
and that's just for starters.:)

The Star Wars Holiday Special. (Can't post in that topic, and as a longtime poster I refuse to register.)

Just got it off Google video. This was the first time I'd seen it since the first broadcast. Horrifying. I immediately burned DVDs to show to everyone I know. I'm thinking of putting a Biohazard warning on each disc -- this thing is toxic.

The Boba Fett cartoon was cool though. On the first viewing I then finally realized who that free Action Figure I got (and still have) was supposed to represent.

It's interesting also to see the selected commercials that show how some things have changed since then. I'm thinking specifically about the car company commercial, showcasing the workers' pride in their jobs -- all stuff that is done by robots now.
