I'll start with me. Wendsday, my Dad and I went to an animal shleter in Aurora (Colorado, not Illinois you Wayne's World geeks) and picked up a kitty! A 7 month old ornage-and-white tabby that I named Piper.
And yesterday, my copies of Michael Moore's new book Dude Where's My COuntry, and the 6th edition of Ben H. Bagdikian's The Media Monopoly came a day earlier than I expected, and a buddy at work, Jose Diaz, became a U.S. citizen!
I am finally getting over the cold I have had since last weekend.
I went to the Friends of the Library Book Sale
and got a copy of Beowulf along with four other books.
The Cubs beat the Marlins yesterday to go ahead and lead the NCLS 2-1.
I saw the first Friday the 13th movie on the big screen last night at the Studio Movie Grill in Dallas.
And tonight, I'm going to see it again, only this time, Lar Park-Lincoln from Friday the 13th part VII is going to be there.
Yesterday an unsuccessful Nigerian scammer waited for me (and three Rolex watches, three Dell notebooks and USD 20,750) at the Lagos airport. Mwuahahahaha! That guy's pretty upset now.
Well yesterday I got a promotion to assistant head detail tech at the car dealership where I work. It means a 50 cent an hour raise and a bit more doign paperwork and stuff like that checking the cars in. So while it may not be back the way it was when I was working in the corporate world it is a bit better than it was a few weeks ago. Although since the economy is still rather down we havent been selling too much stuff. All the salesmen where below quota for the month and only 2 of the 12 got into double digits with their sales at all.
I got a catcher's mask for my birthday! And a new laser printer! And some people actually figured out who my halloween costume was supposed to be (ZZ Top).
I'd brag about good things that happened to me but, this board is rated "G".
Good news !The L A fires are going out
The poor Cub Fan is probably sorry he tried to catch that ball.....
God is not a Yankee Fan this year....The S. F. Giants lost the pennant....sigh
--My life has slowed down to the point where I once again have the luxury of spending time fooling around on my favourite Net message boards.
--The pogey (unemployment insurance, to you non-
Canucks) finally came through, big-time. For about ten seconds there, I felt like a lottery winner...until my mom/financial advisor pulled out the wad of equally big-time bills. Oh, well...
--The Yankees lost the World Series.
--The Barenaked Ladies came out with a new CD.
--The local grocery store started carrying my favourite mini-croissants which I previously had to go into the city to get.
--Did I mention the Yankees lost the World Series?
Yay! Kerriem's back! And the Yankees lost the World Series!
Good things that have happened to me recently include the grades on the three consecutive papers I had before Fall Break. An A/A-, an A, and an A-/B+. Okay, so the slash grades are annoying, but still, muah hahahahaha!
Iain Duncan Smith was voted out as leader of the British Conservative party, & the only nominee so far to replace him is Michael 'Victorian Attitudes' Howard.
Sarah McLachlan has a new CD out.
Joe King,
Take it to PM.
He's just joeking.
Snick,
Take it to the Jokes & Groaners board.
Met Pat Benatar and her husband yesterday. Made a week of brutal training and meetings worthwhile.
Well today I got to drive the Boss's Boss's Porsche Boxster S Convertible. Very very very cool car. Also very very expensive so getting to drive it was cool. I am still waiting for my turn at the Viper or the SRT-10 when it comes in.
I saw comedian Robert Schimmel at Caroline's in New York last night. Be Warned: His comedy is very funny, but very graphic, as he talks openly and with brutal honesty about a lot of stuff. Particularly his bout with cancer.
I met Mark Goddard at the latest "Chiller Theater" expo today. Very nice man. He didn't even lose me when he said that he's a Boston Red Sox fan.
A ticket became available at the last minute for the Angels' home opener (the game had been sold out for weeks).
I'm *finally* able to watch season 5 of Sliders. Another victim of the FOX producers.
See "Star Trek Convention Experience(s)" for my recent happenings
Good things that are/will happen to me ... (if anyone cares to read; pretty boring I'm sure)
I was just thinking that, despite all the terrible things happening these days, on a smaller scale, I am very lucky to be living and able to enjoy them. For one, I was thinking how cool it is to be in an age where Tolkien's books can be translated to the screen in a manner that does his works justice. Also:
1. The Phantom of the Opera movie that is coming out in December. The show has been going for 16 years, and I am very excited to be around for the movie. It's my favorite musical, and looking forward to December is one thing keeping me going.
2. The new series of Doctor Who is happening right now! I'm old enough (barely) to have watched the original series, and I am very happy that I will be able to enjoy the new series now (assuming it is shown in the States).
3. I have a semester of study abroad in France to look forward to (if I get accepted into the program, that is).
So, despite the fact my grandma is in the hospital (again) and I'm working through an awkward break-up, I am glad I have things to look forward to.
Not boring, Daroga. Rather interesting (to me, anyway), and a refreshing shot of optimism in the face of adversity. Best wishes to you and your grandma!
Thanks, CR.
My girlfriend Sue is taking me to Paris (France, not Texas) this Sunday (4/23.) Never having been outside the U.S. (unless you count Canada, and I was only a few miles inside there in 1988), I kind of don't know what to expect. There's been all sorts of stuff going on, like riots a few weeks ago (which made the French president cave in to the rioters' demands.) I was apprehensive for a while, but I'm now looking forward to it. My girlfriend is going through a lot of bad stuff lately, and we need to get away, even if only for a few days.
She took me to see Phantom on Broadway last month. Great show, btw.
Adam...while you're there in Paris, do me a favor and ask where Will Lang Jr. & Louise Lang lived. They sublet a house in Paris & I'd like to know the address and know if the house is still standing.
Bon voyage, Adam!
Congratulations. Glad to see something nice happening to someone for a change.
Yeah, it's a breath of fresh air after all the bad news boards. Have fun, Adam! Please, if you post pictures anywhere on the public Internet give us a link.
BTW...Will Lang Jr. & Louise lived in Paris from 1945-1950
Bon voyage.
You are reading a post by the catcher of the LA Synagogue Softball B1 division CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!
Woo Hoo! Way ta go, Scott!
Cool. Sweet job there on that.
Kudos, Scott.
TrekGrrl is officially licensed to drive.
Yay! Congrats to TrekGrrl!
Bet that makes you feel old, Scott ;-)
Go fetch me my Gertiol, Callie!
Darned kids nowadays....
Congrats!
Last night, after they've been missing for five years, I found the VHS tapes I made of the third season of Once And Again. So, now I have the entire series in my collection (two DVD sets and three tapes.) I can rest a bit easier, since pigs will probably fly before Buena Vista releases season three on DVD. I'll still buy it if it is released, though.
And John, sorry I was unable to do what you asked of me when I was in Paris. Just not enough time, and a major language barrier.
Congrats, Adam.
Btw, I know you moved some time ago, but do you still live in the general vicinity of Hudson County or the city? If so, can you tell me when the remastered Star Trek: TOS is on? I can't seem to find it, and don't know of anyone else who I know lives in my area. Thanks.
Congratulations, from me, too, Adam.
For me, the good thing happening will start tomorrow night. Or rather, this time tomorrow night. I'll be going on vacation tomorrow night. I'm heading for Memphis, Tennessee for four days of blues, booze and relaxation. I cannot wait to get out of town!
So until next Wednesday, y'all most likely won't be hearing from me. I may post tomorrow before I leave. But until then...
"My radio's picking up FM 100/I hear Memphis calling me home." - "Memphis I'm Coming Home" - the Breaks
Can you tell me when the remastered Star Trek: TOS is on?
I moved to Staten Island after my divorce was final, and we sold our house as a (very bad) consequence of it (it was ordered by the court). I've lived on Staten Island since June of 2003. I was raised there, my parents and brothers are still there, and New Jersey Transit fares were getting way too expensive (thanks ex-Gov Jimbo McG) for me to stay there.
To answer your question (I thought you knew) the re-mastered Star Trek - TOS airs at 2:30 a.m. Sunday night/early Monday morning. It sometimes alternates between 2:30 and 3 a.m. The TV listings say "2:35 a.m." but it now starts at 2:30 sharp.
And by the way, the picture quality of my third season tapes of Once And Again is awful, compared to a DVD. But, at least I have them. (The episodes I recorded off Lifetime look a bit better then those I recorded off WABC.)
I should have also said this - the remastered Star Trek airs on WNBC-TV, Channel 4. It's a bit ironic that the flagship station of the network that aired and cancelled Trek now runs the remastered version.
Thanks.
Good things that happened. I did NOT have a heart attack last Sunday.
Really what did you do that thought you might have had one?
Also, my girlfriend is taking me to see Stephanie Lynn (Stevie) Nicks on June 30 in Scranton, Pa. (She moved to northeastern Pa. last year, chucking New York City totally.) It's hard, but we do make time for each other. If we're still on speaking terms when I retire, I'll probably move up with her. We saw her at Jones Beach in 2005, and she put on a great show. Chris Isaak is touring with her, but I'm not sure if he'll be involved on the show we'll see.
When my dad had his heart attack in 1990, he had no pain, but it did feel like he had excess gas. He drank a lot of club soda to try and burp, to no avail. He eventually needed a bypass (triple I think.) So far, it's bought him almost 17 more years.
So, what did make you think you might have had a heart attack?
Oh, nothing much, chest pain, radiating into the arm... the usual sort of thing.
I don't recommend the hospital as a place to spend Memorial Day.
Glad to hear you're still with us, Scott. It wouldn't be the same without you.
I second that.
Wow thats not a nice thing. Good to know you are ok.
Glad to hear you're OK.
Cut back on your Sodium intake.
Anything over 500Mg a meal is too much.
I practically "stole" a shirt from JC Penney the other night. The shirt was marked at $34, but there was a one-day half-price sale going on. With the $10 off coupon I got in the mail, and a 15% off coupon I got for doing a short on-line survey (well worth the five minutes it takes to fill out) I paid a big $4.44 for a really nice shirt.
I bought a pair of black jeans at Kohl's last week (a great buy for a little over $10, with a 15% off card.) With those jeans, I got a $10 discount coupon for my next Kohl's purchase (at the South Plainfield, N.J. store only. But, I was visiting my son, and the store's close enough to where he and his mom live.) So, I went back two days later, and used the coupon to buy a set of lounge pants with "Budweiser" labels all over them. With the 15% off card and the $10 coupon, I got the pants for a little over a dollar.
I won a gift card to Red Lobster last week in an employee raffle (one of those things in which everybody wins a prize). It was labeled as having a balance of $15. When I ate dinner there the other night, I discovered the card actually had $75 on it.
As some of you know, I am now a grad student. There are two bits of good news related to this:
1. After this summer, I will have a master's degree in public history. As part of that program, I will be doing an internship this summer...at the Baseball Hall of Fame in the curatorial department.
2. I will then begin my doctoral studies in the fall in American Studies at the University of Minnesota. I don't know if anyone on the boards is from the Twin Cities, but give me a lookup once I arrive.
I will be doing an internship this summer...at the Baseball Hall of Fame in the curatorial department.
Have I mentioned that I hate you?
I'll try to steal something Angel-related for you, Scott (it is the Angels, right?).
nah, that's the Bring back Big bad barry Bond I took Flaxseed Oil Foundation, ScottN!
Hey ScottN, I had to spend my b-day in a hospice!
sigh.
The powers that ran the hospice wanted a big bash for me. I said, no thanks.
------------------------------------------
a happy Momie day for all you Mommies!
er that's tomarrow I know.
Wifee is headed for China, May 14 June 6.I miss her since she got on the airbus to San Francisco, last time!
Went to "Borders" here in McHenry, Ill.
I saw my first book: "The Epic of Will Lang Jr." there...in both hardcover and paperback.
That must have been a nice surprise.
Congrats, John!
I went to Albuquerque for a week, and took loads of pictures, including a bunch of Sandia Peak, which we ascended with the Sandia Peak Tramway. You can see my pics at Wikimedia Commons' Albuquerque Category page here. The first 158 pics are mine. Everything after that, beginning with the red beetle, are not.
I also quit my job upon my return, so I can devote more of my time to my art, and hopefully find art-related work before the end of the year.
I hope you find time to read my book(s) and give me some feedback
Okay. But given how many I have stacked up to read, it'll be a while. I still haven't read Phil's book, and there are two by Peter David (the second of which arrived today) that I haven't gotten to yet.
One thing I forgot to mention was how nice Albuquerque was. It was hot and dry, in the 90's all week, though a couple of times when I found myself in direct sunlight without a cap or glasses resulted in some headaches. The Sandia mountains were always in view, and it was the first time I had my own hotel room, and a king-sized bed all to myself. The people were EXTREMELY friendly. That, and the fact that it was a Seth Rogen film made it very easy to recruit for the screening. Even people who were inclined to refuse the invitation would stop and listen to what I had to say before declining. I mean, around here (NY/NJ), when I try to recruit people, many of them pass me by without acknowledging my presence. In Albuquerque, the number of times that happened could be counted on one hand.
BTW Luigi,
Did you take the right ramp on your vacation or did you say to yourself,
"I KNEW I should've turned left at Albuquerque"
(ala Bugs Bunny)
Heh. I thought of using that joke myself if we got lost (and indeed, the Garmin GPS directed us to places other than where we needed to go, like the theater and the hotel), but I forgot to think about it at those times.
Great news, I'm off my seizure medicine !!!!!!
----------------------------------------------
and I get to ride the bussssssssss!
yay me.
Congrats!
Thanks.
, Luigie.
after lunch I'm 128/77/76 no swim no pills!
even better.
Good.
for anyone who cares, I'm 115/81/86 after my daily walk. When I was off the pills, I was 138/120/120., and climbing.
I wonder how them druggies get used to this.I take 20 pills a day.
The girlfriend got us tickets to "HippieFest" next weekend, at the Bethel Arts Center, New York (at the site of the original Woodstock Festival.) Flo and Eddie ("The Turtles"), Melanie, Jack Bruce, Eric Burdon. Gonna be a blast. We'd better get out the tie-dyed bell-bottomed jeans, hippie wigs, and drive up there in a VW mini-bus . (The girlfriend does all the driving, though.) More on "Hippiefest" here.
Hey ,I'm 49 tomarrow...
sure beats being dead.
Am now back from the Hall of Fame. Wonderful experience.
Players Met: Mike Myers (former reliever), Ozzie Smith, George Brett, Eddie Murray, Goose Gossage. I also got to say hello to Tim Kurkijian. Dick Williams walked by me and swore. Luis Aparicio interrupted a conversation I was having.
I wish I'd been with you, Mike. I'd have asked Dick Williams if he remembered my mother.
When my dad was transferred to Boston for a year, we lived in transient housing. During the summer, RedSox players lived in the apartment building; in the winter, Bruins. We lived directly below Dick Williams.
My mom spent the entire summer getting up the nerve to ask Dick for tickets. The day she gets up the nerve to ask him was the day the Red Sox fired him.
Geez, my bp is now 91/70/70 ....
---------------------------
er, Mike, who is Tim Kurkijian?
Google is your friend.
Now, the girlfriend got us tix to the "Heroes of Woodstock" show at Bethel Woods om 8/15, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the festival. Not the top acts of Woodstock (Country Joe McDonald and Jefferson Starship are two who are appearing) but I anticipate a fun evening. If my recent health problems don't get in the way. More on "Heroes of Woodstock" here.
I also bought a nice polo shirt real cheap ($6.64) thanks to one of Kohl's 12 annual discounts if you use their credit card. This time it was a sweet 30%.
