In this case, it's sort of understandable. The Onion is really good at writing the craziest stuff in a journalistic style and the subject matter is merely implausible rather than flat-out absurd. Certainly not as bad as when a Chinese paper ran an Onion story about Congress demanding a new Capitol with a retractible dome or they would move to another city (being a parody of news stories about sports teams threatening to move if they didn't get a new stadium on the city's dime).
