What have you always coveted, in terms of car, truck, bicycle, moped, horse, or any other type of mobility device?
Me, a 1983 DeLorean, automatic transmission, with as few miles as possible on it. Doesn't help that the guy next door just got one. It is worse to covet from anear rather than afar. :-D
The original Mach V, from the old Speed Racer cartoon. I don't care if it's real or even feasible. I've just always wanted it.
"Go, Speed Racer! Go, Speed Racer! Go!"
I want a Prius. I'll pant her gold and silver and name her Serenity.
I second Benn's selection for the Mach V...also K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider.
John, do you really want a car that smart-mouth's you back? It would probably make fun of you for your Troi obsession.
Of course, if you did get K.I.T.T., and your girlfriend was in the car with you doing... well... "thingie", KITT could say to her...
(all together now...)
HANDS OFF!!! HE'S MINE!!!!
GOOD EVENING, JOHN. COULD YOU PLEASE TAKE THAT SIGNED PICTURE OF MARINA SIRTIS OFF THE FORWARD CAMERA LENS? I CAN'T SEE WHERE WE'RE GOING...BANG!
LOL-ROTF
K.I.T.T.????
Why would you want that?! You need to go with the classics.
BTW
Why would you want a car that spells:
Keeps Inspecting The Troi
Anyone remember the Bricklin? It was a plastic bodied sports car, built by entrepreneur Malcolm Bricklin (who brought Subaru into the U.S. for the first time.) in 1975 or so. The most notable thing I remember about the car was its lack of a spare tire.
Oh yeah - my ideal vehicle. First choice - the 1955-57 two seat Thunderbird. One of the greatest cars ever built. The new one ain't so bad, either. Second choice is the C-5 Corvette.
Well since I work in a car dealership I get to see a lot of nice cars. The current dreamers I want right now is the Dodge Ram SRT-10. Imagine a pickup with the engine from a Viper, 6 speed racing tranny, 20" wheels and a 500 watt stereo all from the factory. And the one we have at work is in black my favoritve car color. Of course the down side for this thing is single digit fuel economy and a 50 grand sticker.
I also gotta go with the Duke Boy's 1969 Dodge Charger only all in black. yes I am a Redneck.
But another one I would love to have would be the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarittz Convertible all in Black. This thing is the size of a small aircraft carrier, has enough chrome to build another car on it and fins that could be used as rudders on the titanic. All in Black with Red Leather interior.
The Prius is very nice. Has anyone else heard about how Honda and Toyota are going to be putting their hybrid technology in all their product line. That is pretty cool.
This is gonna sound odd, but one of the cars I always wanted was an '86 Buick Grand National. Fast as a Porsche 911 (0-60 in 4.9), and while mean looking, it doesn't scream "arrest me".
A "long" time ago, when I shared a room with two brothers, my older one had a Popular Science/Mechanics magazine that sat on his dresser for months. On the cover it pictures a guy and gal sitting in a futuristic car, and I believe he was lighting a cigarette for her, to underscore the fact that he was not driving it! It was an automatic roadway. Well, the style of that car always impressed me.
It wasn't until years after I'd bought my second car that I recalled that picture, and realized that my Saturn coupe was very similar in design!! So I got my dream car!
Why would you want K.I.T.T.? Because the Firebird and Camaro stopped production in 2002. Oldsmobile dies this year. (There's a page here on that one.)
I got a speeding ticket on Route 17 in upstate New York last month. I was doing 80 mph in a 65 zone. In a four cylinder rental Dodge Neon, for crying out loud. So, you don't need a Buick Grand National, or any car that screams "arrest me" to get into a bit of trouble. Be forewarned, all you leadfoots in Nit Central Land - Route 17, between Corning and Binghamton, New York, is a speed trap. Especially the 65 mph zone. So, watch that speedometer.
I've been on Rt. 17 and passed by Corning & Binghamton, NY! I was going to Ithaca to visit my great-uncle & great-aunt's gravesites. (I was on vacation...I live in Illinois)
My choice of dream vehicle would be {Either}:-
1) The Volvo 340 Turbo rally car,(Think 2.6 litre Turbocharged V6 in a "supermini" that Volvo raced in the Early/Mid 80's...)
(Alternately, a BTCC (British Touring Car Championship) spec Volvo 850 Estate....!)
2) A Aston Martin Vanquish former used by Mr. James Bond (with all features working !)
In Owensboro, on US 60, there is a really bad speed trap from Lewisport to the truck stop in Owensboro. Daviess County cops especially like to hit out of county cars near the county line. I recomend taking 144, 334, or possibly the 405
US 101 between Paso Robles and King City. No really good alternate, so watch your speed.
I just saw a commercial for the Chrysler Crossfire. Very nice. Impractical as a family car, but a great choice for the single guy. Sure beats a minivan or SUV.
Most comfortable car for me is the Nissan Maxima. Perfect seats and driving position.
Yeah the Crossfire is cool. The autostick gets better milage than the standard tranny due to it being a six speed and geared differently. But it isnt exactly all that roomy inside. Whats funny is it shares like 80-90% of its components with the Mercedes S class.
They only slapped the Chrysler logo on it to try and give people an entry level to the Mercedes. When you look at the manufacturor location plate on the door it says weisgart or something Germany. When they show up at the dealership they come in a Mercedes box truck. All Mercedes trucks are closed container trucks unlike the rest of the car carriers you see on the freeway.
But the car is nice, the cargo room is pathetic, the seats dont (cant) recline and I really really dont like the thing around the windshield. maybe the droptop will be better or not but we dont get them until this fall. Oh and they handle and accelerate pretty good. A little better than a mustang or camaro but not as good as a SRT-4 or riced out Civic.
Ok well I guess I have found my special ability. Killing threads. Oh well everybody has to have a niche.
1965 red Sunbeam Tiger. Beautiful car, especially the convertable version.
Re;Last comment
Merat, are you a Hillman Imp fan...? Just wondering...
As for R's comment, well Daimler-Chrysler are about to introduce "Americanised" versions of the "European" SMART Car range under the Dodge "Banner"...
BTW, R, It's the Mercedes C Class that provides the basis for the Crossfire, not the
S-class as you state in your post.
Basically the Crossfire's a Merc CLK in a new bodyshell.
I love my family's 97 Saab 900 S. It has the most comfortable seats of any car I've ever been in....
That said, my dream vehicle would probably be a nice BMW M3... nothing too big, but verrrry nice.
Sorry about that.Doh! I got confused. I should have known about the S/C class thingie considering how I work for the dang dealership and clean/drive one of them at least once a week. Oh well, I stand corrected. Besides its not like 'll ever be able to afford anything on our lot at my pay rate.
Yeah I had heard about the SMART car deal. They are going to be introduced in the bigger markets first from what I understand and here in the midwest might get them later depending on how well they do. At least thats the rumors goign around the office.
My dream car? Hmmmm. How about a hybrid large (say 6.0) V-8 diesel that you can run on electric battery when not towing light truck Ranger, Dakota, etc class) with a boxed frame. 4 speed automatic with auto overdrive. Transmission temp gauge. AWD. Has to have an 8' foot bed with bedliner. Must have a 30 gallon tank. Regular cab. Viynal floors. Cloth bucket seats. Dual airbags with passenger shut-off. Power Moonroof. PW, PL, PS, PB, PM, Cruise, tilt, intermitant wipers. A/C. Tri-media with MP3 cd. Split rear window. Heated mirrors. Tow pack. Extendable mirrors. Remote Start. Soft top on bed. Three power points. Bug (AKA rock) deflector. complete undercoating. Stainless steel exhaust. Radio controls on wheel. Dark Green.
The new 2005 Mustang is very cool. They tried to make it look like the classic 'Stang of the '60's. A recent article said that it resembles the 1967-68 Mustang. However, Lee Iacocca (who is credited with creating the 1964 original, based on the Falcon) actually put down the '67-'68 Mustang in his book, Iacocca. As it goes, former GM exec "Bunkie" Knudsen was president of Ford at the time, and wanted tp put a bigger V-8 engine in the Mustang. This necessitated enlarging the whole car, making it bloated, and taking the car away from what made it popular in the first place.
I was on vacation in Virginia in 1993, with my (now ex-) wife and sister-in-law. We rented a Ford Aerostar minivan, and I remember doing over 90 mph on stretches of either I-64 or I-295, with not a cop in sight. Not the most prudent thing to do with two small boys in the vehicle, but I really gave in to temptation.
Anyone check out the 300C series? They have the Hemi in them with the MDS system. Essentially what that means is that under power you have all 8 cylinders goign and when you dont need the power it drops back to being a 4 cylinder engine. Kinda neat way of increasing the fuel economy. And whats good is that it doesnt seem to affect the performance of the car.
Sorry I know I may sound like I get a bit too overzealous about Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge stuff but since I work there I do get to play with them and all. And many of them are really neat. Sorry if I have bothered anyone.

my dream vehicle
A Ford Pinto.
I used to own a Pinto. A 1979 with the full back glass, V6 and I had it fixed up sweet. I used to race with it. I know a guy who has one and has a 289cid V8 in it with NOS. It looks like a real POS until some ricer wants to play. Those cars got a lot of bad press and where very falsly maligned. Mine held up to a lot of stress and lasted for about 8 years before i finally retired it for the bigger cars I got now.
Oh and one thing from the Chrysler camp. They are going to throuhg an SRT version of the 300C on the market. Itll have about 400 hp and be supercharged. Of course the price will be close to 50grand but still.
I used to own a Reliant K with cruise control.
THAT was the best car I ever owned. It lasted 10 years.
Had an '85 Mazda 626 2-door. I abused the heck out of the beast (irregular oil changes, etc...), had an accident where the front bumper detached, so the lights and turn signals were messed up.
Drove that puppy for 12 years and 102K miles. The engine was still going strong when I got a new car.
There was something to be said for those normally aspirated, uncomputerized engines.
Simple in-line 2L 4cyl. G-d, I loved that car.
The 1600 & 2000cc OHC engines from the Pinto were used in European Fords in the 70s & 80s.
Right now I have an 85 chevy caprice ex police car. It has the 4 barrel V8 and no computer. I've done some minor mods to it but can still beat out some heavily modded ricers on the straights and road. The newer engines may be great on fuel and safety and all that with the computers but for sheer raw power you have to go with an old non-computerized beast.
I presume by computer you mean an electronic engine management system, not a police computer terminal!
That's what I meant. Don't know if that's what R meant.
Yeah thats what I meant. My Caprice may have been an old police cruiser but it was before SCMODS. (a can of cheez whiz to any who get the ref. ) As well as engine controls.
"The Blues Brothers", R.
I'd love to see a Pinto on MTV's Pimp My Ride. I wonder what Xzibit and the crew at West Coast Customs would do with that. They tried to pimp out some kid's Ford Escort on a recent episode, but the car was judged unsafe. So the lucky kid got a 2004 Scion XB, and had it pimped out, too.
Not exactly my dream vehicle, but I love the retro Camaro concept car. I hope they build it. Same with the Dodge Charger concept. Build it!
I assume you mean the Dodge Challenger, a muscle car styled similar to the 70's model. The Charger is now a four-door RWD sedan that's Dodge's twin to the Chrysler 300. Incidentally, the Challenger (now in production as a 2009 model) is based on the Charger/300 platform.
I thought I had put a reply in this thread, but no.
So, here's mine:
The Jade Idol
It's a late 50s custom built by Gene Winfield.
The Camaro is no longer just a concept car; it will be sold in spring 2009 as a 2010 model. The car was prominently featured in the pilot episode of My Own Worst Enemy. More here.
Didnt they use it for Bumblebee in the Transformers too? I thought so.
John said, way back in '04:
quote:I used to own a Reliant K with cruise control.
THAT was the best car I ever owned. It lasted 10 years.
That's what I can remember.
I aso went through two starters in the K-Car. And, I had the carburetor replaced in the spring of 1984, before I even had the car three years. To add insult to injury, the replacement carb had to be re-built in November 1986. (The dealer wanted to replace the carb again, but I balked at that big time.) I remember that around the time Star Trek IV was released, the mechanic had to set the idle speed very high, or the engine would stall. That was a real problem at red lights, as the car felt like it wanted to run out from under me. The guys who rebuilt the carb did a superb job, as I got almost nine more years out of it.
My dream car? Just about anything from the "Gran Turismo" series. Okay, with the possible exception of the pre-WWII cars in GT4.
If I could have any car that's out there now, I'd love a 2009 Dodge Challenger. That car kicks butt big time. I'd grab one in a New York minute, despite Chrysler's bankruptcy, and Consumer Reports not recommending any 2009 Chrysler products. The Challenger is a revival of the 1970's muscle car of the same name. Like when Ford restyled it's Mustang in 2005, to make it resemble it's late sixties version. Chevy is doing the same thing with its 2010 Camaro, which is an updated version reminiscent of the 1969 model. IMHO, the Challenger beats all.
And, for the third post regarding my K-Car, that thing went through I don't know how many mufflers and exhaust pipes; they seemed to blow or rot out every other year. And, even though it had a four cylinder engine (the first year of Chrysler's in-house designed 2.2 liter), it would only run on premium fuel. Amoco Gold was the best for it, Sunoco 93 was second. On 87 regular or 89 midgrade gas, the bloody thing would knock senselessly.
New selection for dream car:

Ah, I wish I could drive a manual.
That car is smokin'
