Well, in a probably vain attempt to get to know my fellow posters better, I'm creating this board so people can tell everyone else a little bit about themselves!

Me, I'm a 21 year old university student at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

If there's already a board for this sort of thing, I apologize, and would somebody please point me in the direction? Thanks!

Well, first of all, Dan, welcome! from one Canuck to another, eh? (Although I shudder to confess I'm from Toronto...:)) I'm in my...early thirties...and I work as an admin assistant at Zellers (Hbc) head office.

A getting-to-know-you thread is a nice idea. Would you mind if I renamed it as such and posted it under the Moderator Directory? Sort of a 'NitC regulars directory' for newcomers?

Well, now I'm the second oldest person posting here. Benn

No, at least the third. I still haven't found anyone else on this board who'll admit being as old as I am. :)

I'm from New Jersey. I lived the first half of my life in Newark (except for when I went to school, first in Hoboken, later in New Brunswick/Piscataway), and the second half down the shore between 1/4 and 1/6 of the way from Atlantic City to Asbury Park.

I work in the home office for a national retail chain. Our merchandise has matured since the days we sold fake vomit, but our target customers haven't.

The same stuff they used in Operation Annihilate ?

I'm pushin' 40 (not there yet!), live in NJ but grew up on Long Island and work in the city. I still consider myself a New Yorker at heart. I work all over the area planning and building stuff. The men will be there first thing Monday, I swear...

I also am tangentially involved in the brewing industry.

By Tom Vane on Monday, January 31, 2005 - 9:41 pm:

I wish I knew about this topic before. I'm 23, unemployed (waiting to ship out with the Air Force), and live with my parents in Allen, TX, a suburb of Dallas. I'm originally from Springfield, Ohio (halfway between Dayton and Columbus) and we moved here when I was 12.

While I was at the University of North Texas, earning a Computer Science degree that turned out to be useless, my parents moved to Jackson, New Jersey (my dad got transferred). So over the past three years I spent certain stretches of time up there. After graduating (Dec. 2003) I moved up there with them since there was nowhere else to go. I spent most of last year bagging groceries at Stop & Shop. How many grocery baggers do you know have college degrees? Last fall MCI transferred my dad back to the same place he worked before, and so here we are in Allen, again. That was only a brief time I lived in Jersey but I am always talking about the place as if I am from there and know everyone (well, I do have a lot of relatives there).

Even though I only seemed to appear here in the summer of 2003 (first as T.K. then Tom Vane) I've actually been here long before. Check out the older posts in the "Marrissa Stories" boards (in NextGen), and the archives of the "Commercials" board, and you will find a few posts under the name Tom Kun. That is my real name. I used to visit this site a lot. However, I got bored with it shortly after moving to UNT, and around September of 2000 I went to one of the "Quotes" boards, posted a line from the then-popular Red Hot Chili Peppers song "Californication" (space may be the final frontier but it's made in a Hollywood basement), then pretty much forgot this site ever existed and moved on with life.

Then, in June 2003 I was sleeping on the couch in Kit Lively's living room (if you like raunchy, toilet humor go look up that name on a search engine) and had some bizarre dream about an original Star Trek episode I had seen part of long ago, "Return of the Archons." Certain things about that episode didn't make sense, and I thought, why don't I look at that board I used to hang around? Obviously, I've been back here ever since.

Since coming back I first posted a few messages under my first and last initials, "T.K." but then changed to my current name after that "pirate name" site re-christened me Mad Tom Vane.

I can also be found in a few other places: Wordreference Forum and Free Translation Forum as MadTomVane, and UniLang Forum as Tom K.

By Benn on Monday, January 31, 2005 - 10:07 pm:

Allen, TX is up around Plano isn't it? I think I had a friend who moved out there several years back.

By Tom Vane on Tuesday, February 01, 2005 - 7:21 am:

Right, we're between Plano (south) and McKinney (north)

By Thande on Tuesday, February 22, 2005 - 12:03 pm:

After 850 years of bidding for city status!!) of Doncaster in South Yorkshire (best known for having the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Western Europe - AND WE'RE PROUD OF IT! :)), but I'm currently studying for a Master of Arts (Sciences) degree at the University of Cambridge (UK, as if you didn't know). I got a copy of the first Guide free with the third tape in the NextGen videos which I was ordering, and haven't looked back since. :)

By mertz on Tuesday, February 22, 2005 - 6:47 pm:

Hi everyone.
Hmm...how to introduce myself without putting down anything for stalkers...I've already dealt with an ex-boyfriend who wouldn't take no for an answer, and I do NOT want to go through that again.
So...let's just say I'm human, last time I checked, and female (kind of a no duh statement).
I like travel, Star Trek, and horror movies, and long walks on the beach, just so long as it's with Elijah Wood or William Shatner.
Let's see...nothing else to report, just that I do martial arts in my spare time and own several handguns. (It's 100% true so don't try to stalk me).
Nertz to mertz all!

By LUIGI NOVI on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 - 5:10 am:

Welcome to Nit-C, mertz! :)

Incidentally, your feminity wasn't a "duh" statement, since up until you mentioned it, I was wondering if you were either female or a gay male.

Also interesting that you do martial arts. Other practioners of it here at Nitcentral include Ghel and Spelunker, and I think one or two others.

By mertz on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 - 8:56 am:

Hi Luigi! Thanks for the welcome!
What kind of martial arts do they do?
I've done Tae Kwon Do and Karate. TKD is SO much better, much more aggressive, and actually keeps your heart pounding for the entire two hour workout.

By John A. Lang on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 - 12:20 pm:

Welcome aboard, M' lady!

By Green Banana on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 - 2:12 pm:

Welcome, mertz

If you are concerned about stalkers, maybe you shouldn't have let John A. Lang know that you are female. He rather imagines himself the Cassanova of our disfunctional little family. (His favorite phrase is "Hands off, she's mine!!")

You know this warning is all in fun and that we all love you, John, don't you? ;)

By John A. Lang on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 - 6:36 pm:

Naturally. I can take a joke as much as I can give 'em.

By mertz on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 - 7:31 pm:

laughing
Well, it has been kinda boring around here since I got ride of my last stalker.
;D

By LUIGI NOVI on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 - 10:09 pm:

Ghel is a student of Isshinryu Karate. Spelunker is a martial arts teacher, but I don't know if he has specified which discipline.

Also, Keith Alan Morgan has stated that he took karate classes "many years ago," but I don't know if isan expert or not. I myself tried kung fu when I was about 13, but never stuck with it.

By ScottN on Thursday, February 24, 2005 - 12:05 am:

I tried Tae-kwon-do many years ago in college, but my knees couldn't take it.

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, February 24, 2005 - 8:32 am:

Is that why you took up fencing?

By ScottN on Thursday, February 24, 2005 - 8:48 am:

Actually, I had taken up fencing first.

By Sparrow47 on Thursday, February 24, 2005 - 11:09 am:

Tae Kwon-Do, eh Scott? You don't happen to remember what style, do you? (asked the guy who practiced the art for something like six years...)

By Machiko Jenkins (Mjenkins) on Thursday, February 24, 2005 - 12:02 pm:

Mertz, welcome!

And yes, sometimes you need to clarify your gender here. Just ask Mark Morgan ;).

Hey, Scott! I did Tae Kwon Do in college too! One semester, loved it, but haven't done it since.

By Dil from on Thursday, February 24, 2005 - 4:27 pm:

MJ: And yes, sometimes you need to clarify your gender here.

Tell me about it.

By mertz on Thursday, February 24, 2005 - 7:03 pm:

For TKD, I took Chung-do Kwon, which supposedly means "School of the Big Blue Wave." Not exactly inspirational, but I guess it worked.
For Karate, I took (and forgive my spelling) Ishinryu Budokai. A really strange style with punches from the hip instead of the shoulders.
My father knows Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, and something called Go-Jyu, which I know little about. So all during my "growing-up" years, he's trained me on the side. Just think Daniel and Mr. Miyagi doing the crane style on the beach. Only I've never done martial arts on the beach; it annoys the seagulls.

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 2:32 am:

And your boyfriend was dumb enough to not take no for an answer? Did he have some kind of death wish? :)

By ScottN on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 9:15 am:

No clue what style, Sparrow, sorry. It was 20 years ago, and I dropped it after a month or so.

By Influx on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 12:24 pm:

In my 22 years as a Taekwondo practitioner, it has never really come up as to what "style" we practice. However, our original Master's roots were in the Moo Duk Kwan system. The Kwan system has largely been abandoned except by some of the older Masters. BTW, I am a 4th Dan Black Belt, soon to be eligible for 5th.

By Sparrow47 on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 2:26 pm:

Oops. I think by "style," I meant, "federation," as in, USTF-ITF, WTF, etc.

And I don't think I've ever heard of the Moo Duk Kwan system, Influx.

By ScottN on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 4:49 pm:

It was a college phys-ed course.

By mertz on Saturday, February 26, 2005 - 6:25 pm:

I've never heard of Moo Duk Kwan either. It sounds interesting though. I bet there's a lot of ducking around in it. (feeble attempt at laughter...dying slowly...)
Are you 100% sure that's the name?

By mertz on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 5:29 pm:

Oh, wait! I think you must mean Motokwan, the style my father knows! It's very aggressive with high roundhouse kicks. Sound familiar?
Anyway, let me know when you get your next dan. Good luck.

By mertz on Saturday, April 09, 2005 - 10:22 am:

Just for the record-
I've calculated everyone's ages (since some of you posted a year ago), and I must humbly admit to being the youngest poster here. (At least, the youngest that admits her age.)
I'm 19.

By Adam Bomb on Sunday, October 30, 2005 - 2:16 am:

Well, if you're the youngest, than I may be the oldest. I'll be 51 in five days. Although I've been told that I don't look it, the graying hair is kind of a giveaway. But, as I've posted here before, gray it stays.

By LUIGI NOVI on Sunday, October 30, 2005 - 9:31 am:

????? Um, mertz, didn't you celebrate you 20th birthday this past August, as you indicated here?

And yeah, Adam you look your age, but you look good for it. :)

Hey, looking over this thread, I think we represent a good mix of the population. We should form our own political party where we don't discuss the issues, just the ability of our opponents to discuss the issue...

Oh, and I had a cat... until he was poisoned by our neighbors... :(

Oh, and I'm now 26... boy, time does fly...

By Bajoran on Thursday, August 10, 2006 - 9:39 pm:

Luigi, I have three male cats, yes I said male cats living in one house. Two of the three were strays that I adopted out of my neighborhood and the third I got from my vet. after someone dumped six kittens on the doorstoop. This one was supposed to be a female. But you know the old wives tale that if a cat is all black like him it's hard to tell the difference. Well it's true I looked and thought it was a girl, so did the vet and a friend of mine. It wasn't until I paid to have her(HA HA) spayed that the vet called me with the news. Oh well. It gets a little loud around here when they decide to play. If anyone's curious the black cat is Blackie, one black and white is Winter and the third black and white kitty is Tux. short for Tuxedo. Notice a predominate color palette in my cats.

On most days I enjoy my job and no before anyone asks I don't get to read on the job. I wish and let me dispell any notions about how easy it is to work in a bookstore. We also have an extensive magazine selection. This is a good thing unfortunatley one box of magazines has an average weight of about fifty to seventy pounds. So lightweights need not apply. ;) And I average about seven to ten cartons of magazines a week.

POlls-torq- how about Nitcentralism?

By Bajoran on Friday, August 11, 2006 - 7:26 am:

Oh and Polls sorry to here about your cat. I hope you filed a police report and pressed charges for animal cruelty.

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, August 11, 2006 - 11:26 am:

I can sympathize, Polls. The mother of my current cat, Elsa, was shot with by an anonymous neighbor, presumably the same guy who shot her with a pellet gun a year or two earlier, as the lump that had been on her skin turned out to be a pellet that when the doctor cut it out of her. The vet said that they could hook her up to fluids, but that she would be in pain, so I was forced to euthanize her. Not too long later, the (presumably) same assailant shot Elsa's brother, and he died before I could even take him to the vet. :(

I'm sorry to hear about your cat, Polls, and yours Luigi.

By Torque, Son of Keplar on Friday, August 11, 2006 - 4:40 pm:

We suspect our neighbors, who we didn't get along with, had poured antifreeze on the floor of our garage. We can't prove it so we couldn't file a police report, but we suspect that it was them who did it.

By Bajoran on Friday, August 11, 2006 - 4:54 pm:

I'm sorry to hear about your two cats, Luigi. There are just to many cruel people in the world.

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, August 11, 2006 - 5:45 pm:

Thanks. As a consolation, Elsa's the longest-lived cat I've ever had. She's almost thirteen and a half, and aside from the torn ligament that required surgery last summer, she's had a good life, and should still have a few more years left in her. :)

Elsa.
Elsa's mother, Spot.

By Torque, Son of Keplar on Friday, August 11, 2006 - 6:00 pm:

Elsa's mother looks rather small and petrified...

By Polls Voice on Friday, August 11, 2006 - 7:50 pm:

kind of plastic too...

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, August 11, 2006 - 11:27 pm:

Ha-ha. I think she was young in the photo.

By dotter31 on Saturday, August 12, 2006 - 7:54 pm:

Is there a board here where we can discuss our pets?

By LUIGI NOVI on Saturday, August 12, 2006 - 9:40 pm:

I was actually thinking the same thing. Moderator, perhaps you can create one in Nitcentralia, and move these posts there, beginning with my August 10, 9:25pm post? Thanks. And sorry for the drift. :)

I am new here. My name is John Jackson. My friends call me Johnny.

I just found this site. This seemed like the place to introduce myself....

By Mike Cheyne (Mikec) on Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 8:09 am:

Hiya, Johnny.

By Benn on Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 10:35 am:

Welcome, Johnny! Hope you enjoy your stay here. Feel free to post on whatever topic strikes your fancy!

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 3:35 pm:

Welcome to Nitcentral, Johnny. Enjoy your time here. :-)

By Johnny on Monday, May 14, 2007 - 6:53 am:

Thank you people. This seems like a nice place to discuss all these great shows. Any know when the new Star Trek movie is coming out?

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Monday, May 14, 2007 - 12:45 pm:

If there's been any discussion nor revelations about that, it would be on that movie's board in the TOS topic. Look there under Movies.

By ScottN on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 - 12:52 pm:

Couldn't really find a relevant board, so....

The LA wildfires are about 15 miles from my house. I'm fine. I can't get into work, though, because the freeways there are closed.

Hopefully any other LA based NitC'ers are fine, too.

Jeez Scott, be careful.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 - 10:35 am:

Ditto.

By Dustin Westfall (Dwestfall) on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 - 10:46 am:

Having grown up in brush fire country, I can sympathize with your situation, Scott. Stay safe. If it comes down to it, evacuate. Don't try and fight it with a garden hose (not that you would, per se, but too many people do).

By Hes_dead_jim (Hes_dead_jim) on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 - 12:19 pm:

Hey ScottN, when i was in Cal state Fullerton,we had the Santa ana fires in 80, and my dad was so worried he called me to find out if I'm still alive!

I don't know why I never discovered this thread before, but here's my contribution.

I'm from Maine, I'll be 32 in May, I have no girlfriend, I live alone with my cat in an elderly/disabled housing apartment building. And I am currently unemployed.

Sorry about my last post. I got weird on that one, I must admit. I have taken steps to improve my conduct so I can still be allowed to post here. Because I really enjoy doing so.

That's about it, I guess. Where has everybody been lately, anyway?
