What DVD Sets Do You Own?

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: The Kitchen Sink: Questions, Questions, Questions: What DVD Sets Do You Own?
By MarkN on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 2:33 am:

This seemed about as good a place as any to create this thread. I don't think there are anymore like it on NC, are there? If not, then here goes nothing (try not to be too shocked at some of them, ok?):

MULTI-DISC SETS

Star Trek: TOS Seasons 1-3
STTNG: Seasons 1-7
Space: 1999 Megaset
(both seasons on 16 discs, 3 eps each)
Buffy, The Vampire Slayer: Seasons 1-7
Angel: Seasons 1-5
World War II Collection (Price For Peace/Shooting War/Saving Private Ryan, D-Day 60th Anniversary Commemorative Edition)
Clerks (10th Anniversary Edition)
Lost In Space: Season 1
(not sure I wanna get the others cuz they were pretty bad)
Dawn of the Dead (Ultimate Edition)
LOTR Trilogy
(All three extended versions)
Star Wars Trilogy
Aliens Quadrilogy
Sci-Fi Channel's Dune
Children of Dune
Firefly
Back To The Future
NYPD BLUE Season 1
ALIAS: Seasons 1-3
Benny Hill Complete and Unadulterated - The Naughty Early Years, Sets One and Two.
(Can't go wrong with Benny!)
Gone With The Wind
The Adventures of Robin Hood
(its Sherwood Forest scenes were filmed here in Chico)
Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl (Special Edition) (not a big Disney fan but I couldn't pass this up when Target had it on sale for $15.99 with an additional third disc)
Matrix Ultimate Collection
Ray Bradbury Theater
(five discs, 65 half-hour episodes, only $23.99 at Best Buy)
Miami Vice Season 1
Wonderfalls
Hellboy (Director's Cut)

TWO-DISC SETS
Spider-Man (Widescreen Special Edition)
Spider-Man 2 Gift Set
Forrest Gump
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Terminator 2: Ultimate Edition
Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
(only Potter film I've watched so far; wanna read the other books first before watching the films)
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Pitch Black
Chronicles of Riddick
A.I. Artifician Intelligence

That's most (or all) of the multi-disc sets that I can recall at the moment. Any others I find or buy I'll post later. I've got even more 2-disc sets as well, along with many single disc sets. I'd post 'em all but it's late, I'm tired and brain's shutting down. Now, if only I had enough time to watch them all.

By Kevin on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 5:54 am:

My DVDs must be past 800 now. It would take way too long to list all the sets.

By Tom Vane on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 7:32 am:

I actually don't own any, but since I live with my parents right now, I can list theirs, right?

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (extended)
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (extended)
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (extended)
Carnivàle: The Complete First Season
Seinfeld: Seasons 1-3

I guess we're not too big on collecting box sets. I'm sure there are some 2-disc sets in the collection but I don't know which ones they are.

Those special edition versions of the last two Lord of the Rings movies are something like four hours each!

By ScottN on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 8:48 am:

Rocky and Bullwinkle - The Complete First Season (Inherited from my dad).

By John A. Lang on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 12:09 pm:

By Thande on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 2:21 pm:

Call me old-fashioned, but at the merment I'm sticking with my 653 VHS tapes until they either decide what recordable DVD format they're going to use (I don't want to buy a 'Betamax' recorder :)) or else my shelves collapse. The latter may well be closer than the former. :)

By ScottN on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 5:05 pm:

Not to mention that there's no DRM on VHS. (Yeah, there's macrovision, but that's easily defeated).

By Sparrow47 on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 6:28 pm:

Sports Night :O
Deep Space 9, seasons 1-3

Not exactly a huge collection, but it suits me... until I finish season 3, that is...

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 6:28 pm:

I have the Special Edition of The Fellowship of the Ring (one of my cousins gave it to me for Christmas a couple of years ago), and would like to get the others eventually too, so I can see the deleted footage. (A friend did me a copy of one of those "For Your Consideration" DVDs that Academy Award voters get before that film's DVD came out, but it doesn't have any special features, and the words "For Your Consideration" appear at the bottom of the screen for a few seconds every 15 or 20 minutes, so I wanna get a real proper version.)

I have the first season of Penn & Teller's Bulls#it!, and I'm going to get season two sometime this week, perhaps on Wednesday.

I have the DVD of the first Amazing Meeting (an annual Las Vegas convention of skeptics, scientists, researchers, educators, skeptics, magicians, pseudoscience debunkers and secular humanists organized by James "The Amazing Randi"), and I want to get the second one, which is now available, and far more extensive. (The third Amazing Meeting was held recently.)

By John A. Lang on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 6:48 pm:

BTW---just got "Stripperella" today. HOT HOT HOT!

By Josh M on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 10:47 pm:

Hmm, let's see what I can remember...

Star Trek: TNG Seasons 1-4
Firefly
Greg the Bunny
LOTR EE Trilogy
Star Wars Trilogy
Greg the Bunny
Farscape Seasons 1-4, Miniseries
Star Trek I-VII Director's/Special Editions
Probably more that I forgot

And a couple that I don't personally own, but are in the house nonetheless:
Sopranos Seasons 1 and 3
Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 1

By JM on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 10:48 pm:

whoops, two Gregs

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 11:02 pm:

Ah, another Greg the Bunny fan. I went to Sarah Silverman's show in NYC for my 30th birthday, and gave her a caricature of her that I made, and she even signed the inside of my sketchbook. She's a hottie. :)

By Thande on Tuesday, March 01, 2005 - 1:21 am:

Luigi, I'd definitely recommend getting the other two extended LOTR films (I own all three). 'Two Towers' is made at least twice as good by the additional footage...'Return of the King' has some dodgy additions but some good ones too. And the DVD extras are also worth a look, particularly the cast commentaries.

By Thande on Tuesday, March 01, 2005 - 1:22 am:

BTW ScottN, I feel curiously reassured (from a scared-of-globalisation point of view) by the fact that I didn't understand a word of your last post. :)

By Snick on Tuesday, March 01, 2005 - 10:02 am:

DRM is a blanket term for any subtle/nasty electronic means a vendor may use to protect its media from copyright infringement (copying). Macrovision is a type of this, but with the advent of DVD's, corporations have found more options to protect their copyrights.

By ScottN on Tuesday, March 01, 2005 - 10:26 am:

I prefer the term "to infringe upon our rights", rather than "protect their copyrights".

Example: Region Coding. How does region coding "protect their copyrights"?

BTW, this belongs over in PM under the DMCA/SSSCA disucssions.

By Thande on Tuesday, March 01, 2005 - 11:25 am:

Amen to that!

By SomeDude on Tuesday, March 01, 2005 - 3:09 pm:

Azumanga Daioh DVDs 1-6 (if i'd only saw the first DVD with the box)
Haibane Renmei DVDs 1-4 (even got the first DVD that came with box)
Neon Genesis Evangelion DVDs 1-8 plus the two movies
Lord of the Rings (non-extended, I plan to get the extended versions)

By mertz on Saturday, June 04, 2005 - 9:13 pm:

I have no boxed sets- yet. I'm not that rich. However, I am looking around for MST3000. Anybody seen it yet?
For the record, I do have the DVDs "The Scarlet Pimpernel," "The Passion of the Christ," and "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation."

By mertz on Saturday, June 04, 2005 - 9:16 pm:

Oh, and John Lang:
How could you actually watch Stripperella??? I have only seen it in advertising, and that's MORE than enough for me.
E-yuck! What's with Pam Anderson anyway? Why do men like women who possess obvious fake features? And what's so hot about blondes too? Why don't we brunettes get any credit for being attractive??
Sorry, I'm ranting. I will shut up now and do something useful.

By ScottN on Saturday, June 04, 2005 - 11:13 pm:

Rocky&Bullwinkle - first season. Inherited it from my dad.

By John A. Lang on Sunday, June 05, 2005 - 4:55 am:

Actually, I do love brunettes...Marina Sirtis is my NUMERO UNO favorite.

By Adam Bomb on Sunday, June 05, 2005 - 10:08 am:

I've complained about Pamela Anderson before. She's so fake and umm...overexposed. I wonder why Fox renewed her sitcom Stacked; I don't think the ratings were that good. The only woman in my life that I unconditionally loved was a brunette, btw.

Anyway, I have:
Star Trek - TOS-All three seasons
Star Trek movie DVD set - "The Original Crew."
Next Generation movie set (first three Next Gen movies.) None of the DVD's are of the "Special Editions." (Yeah, I should have waited.)
Once and Again-Season One (waiting impatiently for season two, which comes out in August.)
Star Wars set-Episodes IV, V and VI.
Die Hard three movie, six-DVD set.
The Alien set (four films, nine DVD's)
The "Indiana Jones" adventures set.
The Honeymooners Classic 39 set.
All the Lost In Space DVD's released so far (the last half of Season Three is due imminently.)

By Duke of Earl Grey on Sunday, June 05, 2005 - 12:46 pm:

Not many so far:

Lord of the Rings EE triology
Simpsons Season 4
(my roommate's, really, but I have access)
Simpsons Season 5
ST: DS9 Seasons 1-7

and ST: TNG Seasons 1-7 are en route

By MikeC on Sunday, June 05, 2005 - 3:57 pm:

Here's me:

Simpsons 3-5
Law and Order 1-3
Law and Order: SVU 1
Arrested Development 1
MST3K Sets (the early ones I don't own because I had the episodes on VHS already)
Tonight Show: Best of Johnny Carson Set
One of the Avengers sets--with Tara King

On VHS (yes, VHS), I own

The Avengers--every Emma Peel episode, half the Cathy Gale episodes, and a sampler set that has a few Tara Kings
Fawlty Towers--every episode
Monty Python's Flying Circus--six episodes
Star Wars/Indiana Jones Trilogies
One of the Prisoner box sets

By LUIGI NOVI on Sunday, June 05, 2005 - 8:05 pm:

Thande, I've gotten the second two LOTR sets since my last post here. I've only seen maybe half of the second film so far (I wanna sit down and watch them proper, which requires that I set time aside). I watched one of the four commentaries on that one, and began to watch the second, but then stopped; Ya just can't watch the same film over and over without getting tired of it. Ya have to space it out. I can't wait to see the documentaries on them, however.

And as I stated earlier, I've since gotten the second season of Penn & Teller: Bull****!, but I'm taping the third season off of TV to save money.

By Adam Bomb on Wednesday, October 05, 2005 - 8:34 am:

Recently added:
Once and Again: Season Two. (Season Three comes out January 10.)
24: Season One (thanks Sue. I'm waiting for Season Two, which I ordered using my Holiday Inn Priority Club points.)
Lost In Space: Season Three, Volume Two.

By Adam Bomb on Tuesday, November 29, 2005 - 8:15 am:

Once and Again: Season Two. (Season Three comes out January 10.)
No, it won't. Buena Vista has postponed the release; no new date was given. I am SOOOO pissed at BVHE about this.

By The MPAA on Tuesday, November 29, 2005 - 8:57 am:

You don't *own* any DVDs. You license them from us!

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

By MarkN (Markn) on Tuesday, November 29, 2005 - 9:01 pm:

Bought the Jurassic Park Adventure Pack today.

By Callie on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 - 7:49 am:

Maybe not wholly appropriate to this page, but maybe someone more experienced with DVD players can help me:

I only bought a DVD player for the first time a few months ago and after having a fairly good skim through the manual, have been experimenting with the remote when playing bought pre-recorded DVDs. I recently found out that there are supposed to be commentaries on some of the Stargate Atlantis DVDs that I bought. At first I thought that perhaps they only appeared on the Region 1 versions but I recently had an email from someone who says that he has them on his Region 2 copies. However, my Region 2 copies aren’t showing them. I’ve tried going through the Special Features/Extras/whatever it’s called on these discs but can’t see any trace (and I don’t believe that they’re Easter Eggs). I also tried going through the Display option of the player itself, having recently and completely accidentally discovered that going through the various options on that gives you the episodes in different languages (and on a movie DVD which I also have, accesses the commentaries) but they don’t seem to be there either.

Am I missing something obvious?

By Anonymous22 on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 - 8:30 am:

hey callie, I got the Last Starfighter and can't access the commentary!

glad I'm all thumbs too

By TomM on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 - 6:57 pm:

Two suggestions, although it's possible that that you may have already tried them and just described them a little differently.

Since the commentary is usually an alternate audio track played with the feature, it is no different from the tracks dubbing the feature into other languages, and is occassionally included in the Languages menu.

Also, my DVD player's remote control has a button that allows me to cycle through the audio channels for the different languages "on the fly" as I am watching the feature. The commentary track is always included in the rotation, even when it is normally accessed from a different menu. If you have a similar control you might try that.

Of course, it may be that both DVDs and DVD players marketed in different regions are set up somewhat differently, so your milage may vary.

By MikeC on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 8:44 am:

Need I add that I added L&O season 4, SVU season 2, Simpsons seasons 6-7, and Arrested Development season 2?

By Mark V Thomas on Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 8:02 pm:

Re:Tom M 's last comment
It varies with the DVD player manafacturer, as currently I own 3 different DVD Players/Recorders & each labels the button used to access audio functions diffrently...
As for Callie's problems, you might try Setup then Audio or Setup then Languages on the DVD menu to see if the commentary's there....
(Again it varies depending on who's "authored" the DVD in question... ).

By CR on Tuesday, April 18, 2006 - 12:49 am:

Just a quick rundown from memory, but I'm sure I'm forgetting one or two things...
The Jurassic Park trilogy with bonus disc (not the Adventure Pack mentioned elsewhere on this board)
The Lord of the Rings Special Extended Edition trilogy (which looks nice on my shelf... maybe some year I'll actually have time to watch it!)
The whole Star Wars saga, even though it has yet to be released as one gigantic mega-set. (When I say "whole saga" I'm including the Cartoon Network Clone Wars DVDs, by the way.)
Space: 1999, season 1 only (and likely ever)
Jonny Quest, season 1 only (really, there only was one season!)
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the BBC series)
The Robotech Legacy Collection
Kolchak: The Night Stalker
The 1990's Gamera trilogy... really, if you ever watch any kaiju eiga at all, it should be this set... puts Godzilla to shame, which is high praise for something that started out in the 1960's & 70's as some of the worst kaiju ever.
Land of the Lost seasons 1 & 2 only (and ever)
Futurama seasons 1, 2 & 3... GRR! I can't believe I still don't have season 4!

Some I'd like to get in the not-too-distant future:
Gatchaman, the original Japanese version of what was re-done & released in the US as Battle of the Planets... so far I've seen that there are four boxed sets in this series, but I believe there are at least a couple more to come.
The Back to the Future trilogy
The Indiana Jones trilogy
Fawlty Towers
Black Adder if it's still available, or for that matter even if it isn't!

By CR on Tuesday, April 18, 2006 - 12:52 am:

Oh, having just done a quick re-read of the rest of this board, Snick's Feb 2005 post reminded me that I want to add the strongbad DVD set to my list of wants!

By Snick on Tuesday, April 18, 2006 - 2:12 pm:

It's pretendous. I have the 4th Strong Bad DVD as well now, but I have yet to get the Everything Else disc.

By CR on Tuesday, April 18, 2006 - 11:37 pm:

Some other sets I have:
Sitting Ducks 1st season Quack Pack. Where can I get the next one?! (Does anyone remember this series?)
DangerMouse the complete 1st & 2nd seasons
Starblazers (known as Space Cruiser Yamato in Japan)
Gladiator 3-disc Extended Edition, as well as the 2-disc Signature Edition

By Chris Marks on Wednesday, April 19, 2006 - 4:36 am:

Callie, I'm pretty sure the commentaries are under Special Features, should be something like episode title - commentary by ...

I'll check Atlantis 1.1 tonight for you though.

My DVD collection includes
X-Files - Seasons 1-9, plus The Lone Gunmen and Fight The Future
B5, plus the movies and Crusade
24 - Seasons 1-4
All the Dr Who's so far released, and Blake's Seven Series 1-3 (4's released next monday I believe :))
All the Stargates and Atlantis so far released, although of the box sets I've only got Season 1, as they didn't get released on the individual discs.
A few movie series box sets - Matrix 10 disc set, Indiana Jones, Blade, The Python movies plus the Extended LoTR Trilogy box sets.

By Callie on Thursday, April 20, 2006 - 2:05 am:

Chris, I really have tried! I just got the first disc of Season 2 and the commentaries' location is very obvious on that one. Season 1 just doesn't have them - I've tried through the Special Features menu and the Display panel and am now convinced that they're definitely not there. It's not a one-off glitch because I got disc 1 as a Christmas present and bought the other four through 2 different websites, so maybe others who've got commentaries on Region 2 bought the boxset and they're only on that.

Anyway, I've now managed to get the commentaries by other means (totally legal, of course ... *whistles innocently*).

By Chris Marks on Thursday, April 20, 2006 - 2:41 am:

Well, 1.1 doesn't actually have any commentaries, and I'm sorry to say I watched SG-1 9.1 rather than go through the rest of the Atlantis discs last night.:)

By Adam Bomb on Monday, April 16, 2007 - 10:42 am:

My girlfriend got me all four sets of the "Ultimate Edition" James Bond movies last Christmas. So, even though I didn't see it in theaters, I bought the 2006 Casino Royale. Gotta be a completist.

By Todd Pence on Monday, April 16, 2007 - 3:31 pm:

Your girlfriend rocks, AdamB

By Adam Bomb on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 - 8:23 am:

In more ways than one, Todd. She sprung for Stevie Nicks tix last week. I of course, sprung for dinner.
I bought season one of Hill Street Blues last week. It was on sale at Circuit City for $13. An absolute steal.

Also added: 24, seasons 3,4 and 5.
Adventures of Superman (first two sets}

By Mike Cheyne (Mikec) on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 - 2:10 pm:

That's cool--I couldn't quite justify spending over $60 a pop for the Ultimate Editions. I'm buying the bare bones DVD Bonds of the films I like--I just wish they'd hurry up and release OHMSS and Octopussy.

By Adam Bomb on Tuesday, July 17, 2007 - 11:08 am:

Your girlfriend rocks, AdamB
In more ways than one, Todd.

Here's another way she rocks, and in a way that was a bit prescient - I was at my sister's house, and I admired some unusual item she had - a cooler in the shape of a "Die Hard" Gold car battery. My girlfriend went to a Sears store the day of the Stevie Nicks concert, and I sought out the cooler at the store, with no luck. Next thing I know, she's searched e-bay, found someone selling the cooler, and had it sent to me. It was prescient, as her car battery gave out the other day. After she got a jump from a AAA truck, we went to Sears, and wound up buying - what else - a "Die Hard" Gold battery for her car. (It would have taken me less time to walk home, get my car, drive to where she was stuck and jump her myself than it did to wait for the truck, but that's another story.)

I only wanted Volume No. 3 of the "Ultimate Edition" James Bond films, because it has OHMSS, my favorite. But, she went out of her way to obtain all four sets for me. For which I'm grateful. (If it makes a difference, they were priced at about $50 per set at the time. Which I thought was a bargain, and still do. The single discs are priced at about $10, which was the price per two-disc movie in the sets.)

By Adam Bomb (Abomb) on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 - 7:12 am:

In the last year, I've sprung for all six season of House, even though it's on USA and the "Sleuth" channel frequently. (It used to be on Bravo for eight hours every Saturday night, but not so much lately.) Season Seven comes out next month, but I'll wait until the price drops before I get it. Or, I'll ask the girlfriend to spring for it as a birthday or Christmas present.
And, Stevie Nicks is coming to Bethel Woods on August 27. This time, I sprung for the tickets. So, I often kid her that dinner will be on her that night. Can I beat a dead horse or what?
