Are CD only players doomed?

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: The Kitchen Sink: Questions, Questions, Questions: Are CD only players doomed?
By Adam Bomb on Friday, March 21, 2003 - 2:10 pm:

I would say yes, at least as far as separate components go, since all DVD players play commercially recorded CD's. (My DVD player does not play CD-R's or CD-RW's, though.) The price of DVD players has plummeted in recent years. Crutchfield, out of Virginia, has a Sony DVD/CD player for only $10 more than a CD only player, rendering the latter just about pointless. There will continue to be portable and car players that play just CD's; however, the CD only home player is fast becoming a dinosaur.

A Word To The Wise: I have my doubts about the SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc) format. Do we really need more confusion with still another audio format? ABCKO last summer re-released their entire Rolling Stones catalog in the hybrid CD/SACD format. (Universal Music just did the same thing with their entire catalog of The Police CD's.) I purchased the collections Hot Rocks and More Hot Rocks. Despite the fact that they are dual layered, with one layer for standard CD players and another for SACD players, they are a nightmare to play on my car CD player. At times the CD's refused to eject, or even start up at all. (They play OK on the DVD unit.)

Sadly many DVD and car CD players have problems with those "copy protected" silvery disks that aren't worth to be called CDs.

By ScottN on Friday, March 21, 2003 - 10:40 pm:

You beat me to it, Electron.

SACD is also a "copy protected" (more like "content controlled") format.

I'm glad I got my CD of the Police's "Every Breath You Take" on standard CD before the conversion to the hybrid format. With the Stones CD's, most of the same material is on "Forty Licks", which (unfortunately for me, good for everyone else) is available on standard CD.

Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon was reissued today in the hybrid SACD format. Another way of separating you from your money. At least this CD is in a plastic jewel box (the others are in a cardboard case, with the CD mounted on a plastic tray.) Maybe they should put the album as a supplemental sound track on future DVD releases of The Wizard Of Oz.

The latest Crutchfield catalog now has a Sony DVD player for $30 less than a CD-only player (DVD is $99, CD player is $129) rendering the latter pointless indeed.

stand alone CD players pretty useless for my
needs because

1) I don't even own many music CDs. Just about
all of my CDs are CD-ROMs

2) I have two CD-ROM drives capable of
playing music cds.

I wouldn't even buy a CD nowadays, except
used or cheepies produced by no-name
companies, because of the dirty tricks
and politics of the RIAA

Removed a series of multiple posts...including two identical apologies for same.
Nog, for the moment I'm gonna assume this mess (as well as the one in Googled) was unintentional...so please remember you only need to hit 'Post Message' once per post, OK? Thank you.

Can I make a bundle selling my eight track player?:)

By Sven of Nine, a bit of a duffer on Thursday, June 26, 2003 - 5:01 am:

Maybe at the next antique fair. You could get a few hundred for it. :O

By Adam Bomb on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 8:38 pm:

Or, try the obvious, Blue - e-bay. Even the New York State government has taken to selling its surplus stuff there, at least according to the Post.
My friend Pete is still of the thought that there will be a market for CD-only players for a while. However, Crutchfield is down to selling just one single play machine and three or four CD changers, symptoms of a dying breed.

The SACD format had never caught on. I guess people didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on new equipment which only showed marginal sonic differences. (Notice I didn't say "improvements.")
There is a new format out now which shows some promise. It's called "Dual Disc." Each disc has been pressed on both sides. The CD version of the recording is on one side, and the other side has DVD material, like videos, interviews and the like. The newest CD's by J-Lo and Avril Lavinge have been released in Dual Disc.

By Adam Bomb on Thursday, March 06, 2008 - 11:21 am:

Dual-Disc seems dead, as Bruce Springsteen released his latest album, Magic on conventional CD. (His previous release, Devils and Dust was released on Dual-Disc only in the U.S.)

CD's and DVD's themselves are doomed. Eventually it'll all be digital anyway.

By Adam Bomb on Friday, March 07, 2008 - 1:42 pm:

Guess I'm old school, but I need something solid to hold in my hand, to actually place in some type of machine. A digital download of an album or a movie don't cut it for me. Besides, I don't even own an I-pod (or a cell phone, for that matter.)

By Josh M on Friday, March 07, 2008 - 9:20 pm:

Of course it all is. Everything will be replaced with something better eventually. That's what happens. Blu-Ray will take the place of DVDs and whatnot and when something better comes along, it'll go, too.

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Friday, March 07, 2008 - 9:36 pm:

See, that's how I feel about drawing Adam (I just can't wrap my head around the idea of using an electronic tablet like Scott McCloud does). I have to feel the paper pushing back at me and the pencil/pen. But video? Well, I admit that the new technology is fighting against my decades-long habits with tapes and discs, but it's already winning a bit. I have some considerable stuff already on iTunes.
