So what *can't* we post?

By The Moderator on Saturday, July 15, 2000 - 7:22 am:

You can't post plugs for yourself because that would belong on the Shameless Plugs page.

Nothing filthy, libelous, or anything that would cause the Chief legal problems.

The usual stuff that will get you deleted.

Does that cover it?

By TomM on Thursday, November 04, 2004 - 12:39 pm:

Luigi-

I'm assuming that the last comment was a joke to "cover up" your momentary confusion in the earlier post.

But just in case you are still confused, or there happen to be others out there as confused. I officially claim the I have nothing to do with the cheif's book (tho' it looks really good and I wish I did), or with the company that is publishing it.

Along with the others, I extend my congrats to the chief and wish him many royalties.

Just so nobody's confused, Tom Martin, the "Tom M." from the link I posted, isn't the TomM from this board. (and he's on the left of the picture, not the right like the caption says)

By Wannabe Trek Writer on Monday, February 21, 2005 - 3:22 pm:

So does this belong in the selfless or the shameless plug? You decide.

It's been a great while, I know. And it's only fitting that now that the show is cancelled, I should peek my head out to say hello to everyone. Upon scanning the Last Day boards, I can see that many familiar "faces" still around. I hope everyone is doing well.

As for me, well, with the cancellation of Enterprise I'm out trying to find new employment once we've cleaned out the offices at Paramount. People had (and have) mixed feelings about the show. Heck, *I* have mixed feelings about the show. But I had a heck of a lot of fun working there... and while I never did get a story credit, working there has been a dream come true, even if all of them didn't come to fruition.

Anyway, enough about me. I'm writing to all of you now because I'm sitting here in a coffee shop on Melrose, wet from the rain from bouncing around from store to store, trying to solicit donations for a fundraiser I'm involved with.

I'm going to be participating as a Rider in the AIDS/Lifecycle event form June 5-11. It's a 585 mile "trek" from San Francisco to Los Angeles on bicycle.

Don't let the lack of red-ribboned lapels fool you: AIDS isn't over. Infact, some of the statistics are quite startling: After a steady decrease in the number of new AIDS/HIV cases, the number of people *increased* by 8% in 2001. To date, that number continues to rise. Of the 40,000+ new AIDS/HIV cases expected this year in the United States alone, over 50% will be people UNDER 25 YEARS OLD!!!! And half of the cases worldwide will be women.

AIDS doesn't discriminate based on age, gender, ethnicity, race, religion, or sexual preference. It's an equal opportunity killer. Not enough is being done today to let people know the facts. So much of the "common knowledge" is outdated or inaccurate. And that's why I'm riding.

AIDS/Lifecycle provides money to the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center to not only providing vital medication to those in need, but to fund HIV Awareness programs. We need more innovation to reach our youth.

I'm required to raise a minimum of $2500 to ride, though I have currently set my personal goal at $3500. I ask everyone to please pledge if you can. Or if you can't pledge, please forward the information to your friends.

For those of you in the Los Angeles area... I am working on organizing a charity event in which I can give away signed Enterprise scripts to lucky winners. But this is still in a preliminary stage. Keep your eyes open for more information.

Pledges can be made at my AIDS/Lifecycle homepage:
http://www.aidslifecycle.org/3724

I hope you all can help me make a difference!

By constanze on Monday, February 21, 2005 - 3:59 pm:

I wish you luck with your endeaveour.

Yes, AIDS is a serious problem made worse because people have forgotten about it and get careless. The statistics that were shown here during Dec. 1st (World AIDS day) about the rise in western countries, and spreading like fire in the former Russian countries (East Asia) and Asia, because people aren't educated at all about prevention...

I've also read enough reports about how devastating it's in Africa. When all the development organizations can do is to give the people a memory book and show them how to write a will, so their children they'll leave behind will have something to remember them by... it's hard to accept that these people will die only because there isn't enough money for the medication.

By Trike on Monday, February 21, 2005 - 10:54 pm:

WTW, it's truly a pleasure to hear from you again! I'm so pleased that you made it as a Trek writer. No matter how much you did or didn't contribute, you realized a role that many of us here, myself included, only dreamed about.

Once you are able, I hope you'll create a topic in which you could share some of your Enterprise experiences. I'm sure we would love to hear them. (We might have a few opinions, too. :))

Best wishes in your fund-raising efforts.

I'm seriously thinking about registering with the Writer's Guild of America so I can submit my "Star Trek: Aphrodite" idea. Then get the copyrights taken care of...THEN mail 'em off!

Good for you John A....:)

By LUIGI NOVI on Tuesday, February 22, 2005 - 9:59 am:

It's good to hear from you again, Juan (and for that matter, interesting to see what you look like). I'll be making a donation, and I expect updates on your progress. :)

By Wannabe Trek Writer on Saturday, February 26, 2005 - 2:56 pm:

Thanks, constanze, trike, Luigi for your support, encouragement, and good wishes.

John, I don't know if you're serious or not with your Aphrodite idea. But I can tell you, having been the unfortunate soul saddled with the responsibility of composing rejection letters for the last three years (being in charge of the script department has its drawbacks), that Paramount will return any unsolicited submissions without reading them. Period.

Unfortunately, the open submission policy they used to have in effect (to which I owe my current career track) has been closed for several years. From Paramount's perspective, the policy created more problems than it solved. They have never bought any scripts via the open submisison policy. And claims are continually being made as a result of the submissions. It's unfortunate... but even big corporations have to protect their interests.

My suggestion would be to either rework your idea into something non-Trek, if possible. Keep in mind, even JMS claims to have tried pitching a Trek show recently, only to be met with resistance. Those things are simply figured out in-house.

Onto my AIDS/Lifecycle campaign...

Things are in full swing. I have set up a charity bingo event at Hamburger Mary's here in Los Angeles (West Hollywood, specifically) for April 27th. For a suggested donation of $20, you get to play ten regular bingo and one grand prize bingo game.

As I said in my last post, I plan on having autographed Enterprise scripts... at this point it looks like it'll be one script in each prize package, signed by the episode's respective writer(s). And at least one script signed by the entire cast to be given away as part of the grand prize package, or as an auction item. (I'm also working on obtaining Desperate Housewives material).

I have approached a couple of the cast members, and at least one has already agreed to participate as a guest/celebrity ball-caller at the event. But, it's still two months down the line, so their schedules can change... so no formal announcement quite yet. Keep your eyes open.

So if you're in the Los Angeles area or know of anyone in the L.A. area who is either an Enterprise fan or just wants to come out for a couple of hours of food and fun -- bingo isn't just for old ladies, folks -- then I invite you to come and join us!

I will keep everyone updated!

By Darth Sarcasm on Saturday, February 26, 2005 - 2:58 pm:

Almost forgot...

The bingo event is at a drinking establishment (with really good burgers) in West Hollywood, and the language can get a little colorful at times... though it's all in good fun. While I don't think the place has an age restriction, I recommend no one under 21 attend.

By Darth Sarcasm on Saturday, February 26, 2005 - 3:47 pm:

Whoops!

Just a note for those that may be concerned (or paranoid) because of the previous posts... Wannabe Trek Writer and myself are not the same person.

As a favor, Juan asked me to post the previous items for him (he's actually busy trying to solicit donations for the bingo event). The second part was supposed to be part of the first post, but I neglected to merge the two statements he wrote... and then out of force of habit, I posted the username I normally go under.

I don't know if a Moderator can change the username.

I apologize to everyone (especially Juan) for the confusion.

By Influx on Saturday, February 26, 2005 - 4:45 pm:

(Something suspicious is afoot at the Circle K...)

By Wannabe Trek Writer on Saturday, February 26, 2005 - 7:21 pm:

Not all that suspicious, to be honest. There's no Section 31 conspiracy. I'm not Keyser Soze. Darth Sarcasm and I are friends... though I didn't know it.

I wasn't aware until today that my friend frequented Nitcentral, though he was certainly aware that I had in the past, since I've spoken to him about matters on the board... especially the things that prompted my leaving. I had some suspicions recently because of things I was told by some of my Nitcentral friends outside the boards.

Darth Sarcasm chose not to tell me. He can be secretive. And I suppose that's his right. I didn't worry too much about it because I wasn't frequenting the boards. How he acts is his business.

Because I was busy today trying to solicit items for prizes for my charity bingo, I asked my friend to post a message I wrote up for him on Nitcentral. (Even then, he didn't say anything about being familiar with the site.) I wasn't even going to go online until he called me a little while ago to "fess up."

I'm torn about how to feel because on the one hand, we're two separate people, and he was never posing as me (except this one time per my instruction)... at least to my knowledge.

But on the other hand, I know that he can be a little aggressive, particularly when he "knows" he's right. And I fear that's created a credibility problem, which I wouldn't care so much about, except for how it affects my AIDS/Lifecycle project that I'm deeply commited to.

But the situation is what it is. So I'll just let our respective personalities speak for themselves...

Peace!

Well, ScottN, it was a deliberate "misquote" but I thought it fit the circumstances.

Wannabe Trek Writer -- I don't really care if you and Darth Sarcasm are the same person or not. I myself have posted under a different name when I want to be in "jerk" mode (but I have not posted under that name for quite a while -- about 3 years, I think). I even had an early dig at Luigi but my opinion of him has since changed. Luigi, I know you are tenacious enough to figure it out, but let's not spell it out for everybody, hmmmm?

Olsen is wore the gold dress to some bash at NYC's Metropolitan Museum, which you can see on page 16 of the May 16 US Weekly. Congratulations, Zizi! :)

(My Mom also pointed out to me that she made the black and white striped dress Stephanie Seymour wore on a Cosmopolitan cover years ago.)

Actually, Influx, this is the first time he's used the DuBois caricature. The previous time he used one of my caricatures, it was the one he commissioned me to do of him, which you mentioned in July (just three posts above this one. :))

Thanks for the heads up, Influx, and Happy Holidays. :)

Congratulations to Wannabe Trek Writer for completing the 585 mile trek from LA to SF back in June}! The his goal was to raise $3500, and while the page says the current total is only $125 (the page must not have been updated in a while), he actually raised over $6700, almost twice his goal! Kudos, WTW!! :)

And Happy New Year to everyone.

By Wannabe Trek Writer on Saturday, December 31, 2005 - 6:18 pm:

As I told Luigi via email, all I had to do was fundraise, go to San Francisco, and pedal home.

The real kudos should go to Luigi and all the other contributors who helped us raise over $7 million dollars... all of which goes to help the unfortunate victims of this insidious disease. Their generosity helped give someone another walk along the beach, another sunset, another date, another laugh, another dance, another hug, another chance.

One small clarification on Luigi's post: the link he's supplied is to my webpage for next year's ride (which I have already signed up for)... not this year's ride. So the figures are up-to-date. My goals are a little more ambitious this time, so I encourage everyone to check it out. And feel free to forward the information to anyone who might be interested.

Happy New Year!!!

By LUIGI NOVI on Saturday, May 27, 2006 - 10:55 pm:

You GOTTA check this out. I was walking down 3rd Ave. today, strolling through the street fair looking for people to recruit for a movie screening Wednesday, when I came across this book with this incredible sculptures! These were hand-made, welded metal sculptures of Predator, Terminators, Aliens, Storm Troopers, General Grievouses, Batman, etc. They were awesome!

These guys weld found pieces of metal, screws, engine parts, motorcycle parts, and as you can see in the photos, lots of bicycle chains, which they use as the Predators' dreadlocks, the aliens' tails, etc. They even have motorcycles, helicopters, and other vehicles too.

One piece even had a Predator with half his mask torn off.

The small photos on their site really doesn’t do the pieces justice (except maybe for that big honkin’ Predator). There’s nothing like looking at shelves of these things in front of you and touching them yourself.

Why did they give you a fake degree?

By PV on Thursday, January 18, 2007 - 11:24 pm:

because the graduation ceremony is before the grades are actually due, and since they need to double check to make sure you've taken all the credit hours you need to and passed those courses, and to make sure you've paid any fees you might have; they give out a fake degree for the graduation ceremony, and mail you real one after they review all that info I just listed.

But because I had actually graduated in August, but walked with the December grads (there was no ceremony for summer grads) I had my real degree prior to walking, thus I have portfolios (or whatever you'd want to call the black cases for the degree).

Shouldn't this be on the Shameless Plugs page?

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Friday, May 18, 2007 - 5:54 pm:

I always get the two boards mixed up. Sorry.

GOLDEN GLOBES PLUG:

The sample-making room at Oscar De La Renta, in which my mother and aunt both work, were responsible for a number of the dresses at the GG, which took place on Jan. 9th, but are being broadcast today.

My mother did not make any of the actual dresses worn tonight, but she did make a black version of the dress worn by actress America Ferrara. The one Ferrara was is light blue.

My aunt (my mom's twin sister), did not make, but she did alter, the dress worn by Amy Adams tonight, for a more proper fit.

Kudos, Mom, Zizi and your coworkers! :-)

Former poster Thande has a YouTube channel reviewing stuff.

Warning, some language that would be censored here.

Yay!

Blimey, he's younger than I imagined. But still funny.

"Fanfiction was sent to us by Satan to end history."

I'll enjoy watching the videos properly later, and then stalking him chatting to him - if he still remembers me from Nitcentral.

By KAM on Saturday, May 09, 2009 - 3:25 am:

He also has Contributer Page at TV Tropes, which is how I found the link to his YouTube channel.

Happy Fourth of July!! And to those resident in the USA, Happy Independence Day!

And to our Canucks, a belated Happy Canada Day!

By ScottN on Tuesday, July 05, 2011 - 9:22 am:

I'm not sure whether this goes in Selfless or Shameless plugs. Moderators, please feel free to move it.

As some of you may know, last year Mrs. ScottN was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease -- or for you Brits, the same thing Stephen Hawking has). October 16 is my local Walk to Defeat ALS. Please consider donating.

http://web.alsa.org/goto/scott-and-sue

Note: Just found out website is currently down until 6 July.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Sunday, September 25, 2011 - 10:12 pm:

Repeat, also on Shameless Plugs.

Hi Nitpickers!!!!

As many of you know, Mrs. ScottN suffers from ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

On October 16, the Ventura County Walk to Defeat ALS® will take place, where we walk to raise both awareness and funds.

If you can do so, please sponsor me/donate at my page: http://web.alsa.org/goto/scott-and-sue

If you do decide to donate, please drop me an email at sconeu at yahoo dot com so that I can put an identity to the real name I'm given (actually, with most of you, that's not really a problem, but it's happened with other online communities I frequent).

Thanks,

ScottN

My dad has a blog for Rockhounding.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Wednesday, September 04, 2013 - 4:59 pm:

Did he by any chance escape from Shawshank Prison? :-)

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Thursday, September 05, 2013 - 1:36 am:

I've never read the book or seen the movie so you've lost me with that reference.

If it's about his picture, I have commented to him on how he rarely seems to be smiling in recent pictures. (I'm the webmaster of my club website and I've put up pictures of his demonstrating rocks at schools and science fairs.)

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Thursday, September 05, 2013 - 7:19 am:

You never saw the movie???? Good GAWD, Morgan! It's awesome! :-)

By ScottN (Scottn) on Thursday, September 05, 2013 - 4:03 pm:

Luigi's right. Netflix it or rent it or whatever.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Friday, September 20, 2013 - 10:25 am:

I posted this in Good Thought, but KAM suggested here as well

quote:

Hi everyone!!!

I know this post will sound spammy, but please, I ask you to finish reading it.

As most you may (or may not) know, Mrs. ScottN recently passed away from ALS -- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

In her memory, I am participating in the ALS Association's annual Walk to Defeat ALS. I am asking you to open your hearts (and wallets) to support this cause. If you would like to sponsor me, please visit my walk page at http://web.alsa.org/goto/scott-neu.
I would be very grateful for your support.

Thank you,

ScottN

P.S. I cleared this with Phil before posting.
