Secret Wars

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Comic books: Marvel: Secret Wars

Perhaps they should have kept it secret? ;-) ;-)

This board is for nitpicking both Secret Wars miniseries.

One thing that bothered me was that the only way the heroes could be chosen was to enter the ring thing in Central Park, but the villains were snatched from anywhere. Why? If the Beyonder could snatch anyone he/she/it wanted why do the trap thing for the heroes?

Also in the regular books at the end of one issue the heroes would enter the ring thing and disappear. The next issue most of the heroes would exit the ring thing & there would be differences: Spider-Man had a new costume; She-Hulk was now a member of The Fantastic Four; The Thing could now switch between his rocky form and his human form at will & he was on an alien planet; etc., etc.
However these apparently major changes were very minor things in the miniseries. Almost as if Shooter had the story already written then made alterations to accomodate the changes done in the regular books. IIRC a lot of the changes occured in the final issue and frankly I found it annoying that these things didn't play much of a part in the actual story.
In the return issue of X-Men a giant female dragon appears with them as they materialize over Japan & yet this dragon, in a smaller size, only appears in one or two issues of the miniseries and there is a bit of throwaway dialogue about it's presence throwing off the coordinates of the X-Men's return.

You know, I bought all twelve issues when it came out, only because I was still deep in my X-Men fandom stage. I read, I think, the first two issues, then quit. I think for the next two issues I read only the dialogue spoken by a member of the X-Men, or any scenes involving them.

But the reason I quit reading it was how bad the dialogue was. There was line I vaguely remember. Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four had done something particularly heroic or generous. In response to it, Captain America commented, "No wonder they call you 'Mr. Fantastic'." Or words to those affect. And that was typical of the first two issues that I read. It seemed like each and every hero just had to pat their fellow heroes on the back. Repeatedly. It was very nauseating to me.

So, beyond what I've just written, I really don't have much else to say about this mini...er, "limited series." (Doesn't mean I won't be adding a comment now and then, just that unless I go out and rebuy this title [yeah, right], I won't be posting too much here.)

Well, now I guess there's 3 of these series to talk about.

Just read the Secret Wars #0 FCBD offering. Ugh.

Crisis on Infinite Marvel Earths where they get rid of all their rich and varied history to replace it with a cherry-picked single Earth without all that annoying continuity to worry about. Yeesh!

It's funny. A few months back as part of this whole current Secret Wars garbage, they destroyed the final two surviving Earths and the issue had tombstones for the Marvel and Ultimate Marvel universes.

The odd thing about that is that the part of my brain that cares about the MU and the continuity thereof, just basically went, "Okay. It's over. Marvel is dead."

I knew that there was going to be a reboot, but as far as the part of my brain that cared about Marvel is concerned, it's nothing but fanfic, authorized fanfic, but still fanfic, and has no bearing on the now dead Marvel Universe.

I no longer care what the idiots do because it's not "real".

I wonder if I would have had this reaction had Crisis On Infinite Earths had a tombstone for the DC Universe?
