Celebrity endorsements

At the State of the Union address next to Laura Bush was Tom Brady. He said of it, "I was invited. I went." When asked if he was a Republican or a Democrat he said, "I went figuratively and literally as a Patriot." (He is the quarterback for the New England Patriots football team.)

When Kerry insisted on a photo op with him it brings up the question of, "Who cares?" (John Kerry is the senator from Massachusetts [part of New England] and the likely Democratic nominee.)

Seriously. Are you more likely to vote one way or another because Tom Brady did? Are you more likely to buy a muffler at Mieneke because George Foreman is their spokesman? Are you more likely to drink Gatorade because Michael Jordan was their pitchman? Are you more likely to buy a Zinnefer feather boa because the former governor of Minnesota uses them?:) (Europeans, ask a wrestling fan to fill you in on that one.)

I expect a chorus of "No, not me." But if no one does it why do Political candidates want to get celebrities? Why would Pepsi pay Brittany Spears to appear in the ads when any no name singer would do and be cheaper? They are not $tupid. (Full disclosure: I had a Burger King B. B. King meal.:))

The interesting answers will be the "yes, because..." I promise I won't criticize you. (I wouldn't want to try to take that job away from your conscience when the line for that is so long.:) [Full disclosure: After I ate the burger I wondered what kind of 1diot I must be to be influence in meal choice by a musician.:)] )

One of the problems with spell check is if you spell a different form of the word correctly it won't pick it up for you.

The last post should read "to be influenced in meal choice by a musician."

There must be positive consumer response to celebrities, or else why would corporations pay millions to hire them?

Incidently, Yao Ming now replaces Kobe Bryant as the spokesmane for McDonalds.

By Scott McClenny on Thursday, February 19, 2004 - 10:59 am:

I really don't care who is hawking what on tv.
I buy what I like not what some celeb may endorse.
If what I buy is endorsed by one of my fave celebs
that's just sweetening the pot.The same goes for
politics.I don't vote for someone simply because some celeb as come out and endorsed them.On the other hand I think it cool if one of my fave celebs holds similiar political views as mine and endorses the candidate I am supporting.

Scott: On the other hand I think it cool if one of my fave celebs holds similiar political views as mine and endorses the candidate I am supporting.

And unlike some poeple I could mention, I see absolutely nothing wrong iwht that. :)

By kerriem on Friday, February 20, 2004 - 8:32 am:

Wonderful. Skip the unnecessarily personalised debate style, please, Brian, or take it to PM.

By Brian Webber on Friday, February 20, 2004 - 12:50 pm:

kerrie: What? Al I did was agree with Scott. And if you're referring to the "unlike some people" comment I wasn't referring to anyone here. I was just commenting about whiners and gripers in general. The whole "Who cares what celebrities think" crowd. And to an extent they're right, but since when did being famous PRECLUDE you from having an opinion?

By kerriem on Saturday, February 21, 2004 - 11:35 am:

Ah. Sorry. Slight moderatorial over-reaction, there. As you were. :)

By Brian Webber on Saturday, February 21, 2004 - 1:03 pm:

To be honest, I wasn't in the least bit surprised? I do tend to have that effect on people. I've managed to start massive flame wars by making a completely innocuous comment.

By Outraged Poster on Saturday, February 21, 2004 - 1:23 pm:

How dare you make that inflammatory statement?!! Don't you know that in the People's Republic of Groovesnackerstan it is sentenceable by death to use the phrase 'innocuous comment'!

Just kidding :)

Robert DeNiro has now taken to endorsing the American Express card, in a commercial that highlights New York City as well.

By John A. Lang on Friday, December 24, 2004 - 11:51 am:

Kirstie Alley is now the spokeswoman for Jenny Craig.

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, December 24, 2004 - 3:56 pm:

And Sony's new handheld camcorder with green nightvision is now being endorsed by Paris Hilton.

Luigi: You owe me a new keyboard cause I was drinking when I read that. ;)

There was a New York Lottery commercial that aired for a while last year. Ed McMahon, Don LaFountaine and Jeopardy announcer Johnny Gilbert were seen having a meal in a coffee shop. The ad came back to the air last week, even though LaFountaine passed away last year, and McMahon has been hospitalized for quite a while.

Both Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony are still together, in a way - they both have clothing lines at Kohl's. No doubt the deals were signed before their divorce was announced. In the meantime, J-Lo seems to have moved from actress to professional spokesperson (the female Anthony Sullivan, maybe?) She's starring in ads for makeup (Maybelline or L'Oreal, I've forgotten), cars (the Fiat 500) and the Gillette Venus razor. I ass-u-me her movie career is not going too well; after bombs like The Back-Up Plan, how can it be?

By Adam Bomb (Abomb) on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 - 10:00 am:

Larry King seems to shill for anything that will pay him the bucks, now that his CNN show has long bit the dust. Lately, he's doing internet ads for Prosta-Genix, a prostate medication. Kwityerbeefin and just have the surgery, Larry; it's called a TURP. I did.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 - 9:26 am:

Joe Namath -- yes, Broadway Joe himself -- is shilling for one of those "Get all the Social Security/Medicare Benefits you DESERVE!" businesses.

The sad part is how whiny he comes off as.

By Adam Bomb (Abomb) on Tuesday, May 05, 2020 - 7:48 pm:

Tom Selleck is shilling for some reverse mortgage company, and going out of his way to say that reverse mortgages are not a way for the bank to take your house. I said here ages ago, and I'll say again. Keep one word in mind - Don't - when it comes to reverse mortgages.

I thought all those Medicare supplement ads would end in December, when the change period ended. Even Broadway Joe's. But, they go (with apologies to Stephen Bishop) "On and On." (Personally, I have such a good deal with my Medicare supplement, it would be madness to switch.)

This is on the Wikipedia page for New Coke:

quote:

The (New Coke) fiasco led Bill Cosby to end his long time advertising for Coca-Cola. Cosby claimed that his commercials praising the superiority of the new formula had hurt his credibility.

My guess is that Cosby's status as a convicted and imprisoned sex offender has erased any credibility he had left.

Both Martin and Charlie Sheen appear in commercials for Singlecare. I've tried both the Singlecare site and the other drug coupon site Good Rx, to see what kind of deals they offer on the two prescription meds I take. Sorry, Ramon and Carlos. My insurance price beats them both. Especially on the 90 day supply of (otherwise really expensive) dutasteride I need.
