I have started a blog describing my favourite albums here

There are only a few albums there at the moment but I would love for people to come along and read it as well as leave comments. I'm in the process of adding a couple new entries now. I don't expect you all to agree with my choices but it as a computer novice I'm trying my best so excuse the bare-bones layout....

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Tuesday, November 04, 2008 - 11:28 pm:

I wasn't sure if I should put this here or in Comic Books, but what the hell:

Jay Faerber, the writer/creator of Noble Causes, Dynamo 5, etc., was so impressed with my work creating and maintaining the various Dynamo 5-related articles on Wikipedia, that he asked me to write a 3,000 word recap of of the first 19 issues of D5, which will comprise two of the ten pages of a special Zero Issue of that series that comes out in January. I just emailed it to him early yesterday morning, and he responded this evening that he liked it. Because the Zero Issue is a small, .99 cent issue used as a jumping-on point for new readers, the entire creative team will take a pay hit, and I won't be paid, but it will be my first work on a comic book, and therefore, my name will be on the book. I asked Jay if I could do a pinup for it, but since it won't fit, he said I could do it for an upcoming issue. Hopefully this may represent, if not my big break, then at least my getting my foot in the door. :-)

By Merat (Merat) on Wednesday, November 05, 2008 - 7:26 am:

Wow! Congratulations, Luigi! Getting your foot in the door is right! I'll keep an eye out for this.

I'm always impressed by Wikipedia as a casual reference source, especially when it comes to pop culture. I mean, I'd never use it/accept it as a source in a term paper since anyone can edit it and decide (as my cousin once did) that Pope Lando should be called Pope Lando Calrissian, but for general knowledge it's an incredible resource.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Wednesday, November 05, 2008 - 11:01 am:

Thanks, Merat. :-)

As for WP, it's okay to use it if you focus on the sources it cites. If it names, for example, a NY times article, a book, movie, and a magazine article, you can get those things and use them as your sources. WP founder Jimmy Wales himself says that WP should only be used as a starting point in this manner.

Rodney, I just wanted to say thank you for your recommendation on your site of von Karajan's version of Mahler's Symphony No 9. I'd only ever heard part of Mahler's 5th before now, but thought I would try the 9th based on your comments and so bought Karajan's version. It's stunning. I also bought his version of the 5th, and the Adagietto is the most gorgeous and tear-jerking version I've heard. Thanks again for the recommendation(s).

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Wednesday, March 04, 2009 - 2:37 pm:

Although I posted this on my MySpace blog and Facebook, I forgot to mention here that on February 18, Dynamo 5 #0 came out. (Yay!) I mentioned that I got this assignment back in November, but for a more detailed account of how I got the gig, here is the MySpace blog entry/Facebook note that I wrote:

----------------------
Back in January 2007, a new family-of-superheroes-type comic book by writer Jay Faerber and Image Comics premiered called Dynamo 5. The concept was that this beloved Superman-like hero named Captain Dynamo was assassinated, and in the aftermath, his widow, Maddie Warner, discovered, through sorting through his personal effects, that the guy was womanizing boor who cheated on her countless times with countless women. Although devastated by this discovery, she realized that Tower City needed a new protector against all the super-wackos coming out of the woodwork to take advantage of his absence, so she tracked down five people who could be his illegitimate children, exposed them to the same energy that had given Captain Dynamo his powers, and turned them into a team called Dynamo 5. The book would focus not only on the action of their superheroics, but the personal side of their attempts to come to terms with learning about the father they never knew, and the new half-siblings they each now had.

I had never read Jay Faerber’s other work, including his other superhero family book, Noble Causes (of which Dynamo 5 was a spinoff), but this one’s concept sounded interesting, so I began reading it. Since I’m an editor and administrator on Wikipedia, I also almost single-handedly created and maintained the Dynamo 5-related articles on Wikipedia. Back in October, I wrote an email to Jay Faerber offering a minor correction on a piece of technical information that a character referenced in Dynamo 5 #17. Since I didn’t want to come off as a douche about it, I couched it in polite, friendly terms, and mentioned all the work I had done on the Dynamo 5-related Wiki articles.

Jay wrote back to say that he was astonished at how thorough, accurate, and up-to-date the Wikipedia articles were. He mentioned that after issue #19, he was going to publish a twelve-page, #0 issue that would act as a jumping-on point for new readers. In addition to a ten-page story by him and the regular artist, it would feature a two-page, all-text recap of the first 19 issues for new readers to become acquainted with the series, a practice that had been done with other books by Image, and he wanted to know if I’d be interested in writing it. Because it would be a twelve-page, .99 cent issue as an incentive for new readers (most books are now $2.99 – $3.99, and run about 30 pages), the entire creative team would take a hit, and so he couldn’t afford to pay me, but I would get credit for it, and see my name in the book.

Elated, I jumped at the chance. Although I’m an aspiring artist, writing is something I’ve thought about too, and although this would not involve writing or drawing an original story, getting my name in the credits of a book by a major publisher would help get my foot in the door, career-wise. I asked if I could draw the cover, and he said that the book's co-creator and regular artist, Mahmud A. Asrar, would be doing that, but that I could submit a fan pinup page to be printed in a subsequent issue, as they run such art in the back of each issue as a courtesy for fans. I asked if it would be okay to do a multi-panel sequence, in order to show my storytelling skills. Although editors prefer to see 3 – 5 page panel-to-panel sequences from aspiring artists showing samples, I figured having a one-page sequence of my work in a book would be better than nothing, as I could point to it as an example of something I had published, when showing samples of longer sequences to editors. Jay said that would be fine.

He provided me with PDF files of issue #18, which was already drawn but not yet published, and the script for issue #19, and I went to work. After some back-and-forth with Jay, I finished the final version of the recap on November 4.

On February 2, I finished penciling the one-page sequence. Although fans submitting fan artwork are generally responsible for lettering and coloring it themselves, Jay reacted by saying: “This is really cool, man! I think I can convince our letterer to letter this page for you, so it looks a little more slick.” Right now I have to ink it, and then I’m going to email it to him, along with the script for the dialogue, which I have to tweak slightly.

On February 18, Dynamo 5 #0 came out. Ironically, when I went to the little comic book store here in Jersey that I normally go to, they didn’t have a copy, since the guy there usually only orders one copy for me, and I had previously told him not to bother with this one, since Jay had told me he’d send me some complimentary ones. Unfortunately, he never asked me for my mailing address, and since I only realized this and thought to give it to him a few days before, it meant that I couldn’t get a copy of the book I worked on the day it came out! Since I had an appointment in New York on Friday, I ended up buying 10 copies at the store in Times Square. My name isn’t on the cover or inside the front cover as I’d hoped (I realized that people doing backup features past the issue’s main story are not credited in that manner), but it’s at the top of Page 1 of the recap.

So if you want to check it out, or jump on board with a new series without buying all the previous issues (not that Jay and Mahmud would mind that—hint, hint!), here’s the cover.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Thursday, June 25, 2009 - 8:56 pm:

Okay, what happened, according to Jay Faerber, the writer/creator of the series, was that because the issue was so delayed, and went through a bunch of artists trying to finish it, that in the confusion, he forgot about my page. We last spoke in March, and the issue wasn’t put together until May, so it’s understandable. He assures me my page will definitely be in issue #23.

My mother just pointed out to me that there's a road in Italy named Via Luigi Novi (Luigi Novi Way). Just do a Google Maps search. Kinda cute.

She says it may have been named after my paternal grandfather, and suggested that maybe the city planners knew him, or something, but I pointed out to her that Luigi Novi is apparently a common name: If you search for that name on Facebook, for example, you'll find several people by name, of which I'm only one. The other is my cousin, Gigi, who's holding his son in his photo, as he was also named by our grandfather, but that's still another three people.

Keep in mind also that those on Facebook are limited to the Internet generation, and that older folks not interested in the Net are less likely to be represented on Facebook, so there might even be more of them with that name.

Hey, I'm on CBDB!

I'm watching this documentary on Hulu called Google Me, and I got the thought to Google myself. On the second page of results was a link to the Comic Book Database, which I figured was of that photo of Guy DeLyle of mine that they were using on his page, to which they had recently added credit to me.

But when I clicked on it, it turned out to be a page for my profile, based on my (still meager) credits. Apparently, some editor of that site (its content is user-generated) created it because of that one page sequence I wrote, penciled and inked that appeared in Dynamo 5 #23. Ironically, the two-page text recap I wrote in issue #0, which came first, is not listed on that page, but it is mentioned on the page for that issue.

Nice surprise. :-)

I've been staffing movie test screenings for the past couple of months for the company from which I had quit three years ago, and tonight at the AMC Lincoln Square in the city they screened W.E., a movie about King Edward and Wallis Simpson that Madonna co-wrote and directed. When the movie started, she came out of an office right near the auditorium and walked right past me into the theater to take her seat. I'm not often starstruck, with all the celebrities I've met, but I was tonight. :-)

By Andre Reichenbacher (Amr) on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 - 12:14 am:

Isn't she British now? Kathy Griffin said she was a few years ago.

At least she *pretends* to be. The British hate it when Americans try to be like them and talk in fake accents. Apparently nobody has informed Madge of that, or Britney Spears, for that matter. She was temporarily British a few years ago as well. As we are all aware, that girl is looney tunes as all get out and she just wanted the paparazzi to continue to pay attention to her during her well-publized nervous breakdown!

As for Madonna, I like her past music library, but as for seeing or meeting her, I would not be impressed, and I would have nothing to say to her. She's kinda like yesterday's news, know what I mean?

Also, shes *directing* movies now? Has everyone forgotten "Shanghai Surprise", "Body Of Evidence", "The Next Best Thing", "Swept Away", "Truth Or Dare", and all the other cinematic bombs she hoisted upon the world? What makes her the one to make a movie about an English King, just cause she choose to start talking like them after living in London after marrying Guy Ritchie?

I don't get it at all! But that's just me.

A book called "Sherlock's Home - The Empty House" was recently published to raise funds for the Undershaw Preservation Trust, which is hoping to save Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's historic house from demolition. They put out a call for people to submit stories about Sherlock Holmes and I submitted a drabble - a self-contained story in 100 words - and to my delight it was selected! So - although it's in my writing name of Ariane DeVere - I'm now a published writer!

The book's available on Amazon but was rather rushed to print, and sadly it shows, with lots of bad punctuation and grammar because they didn’t have time to edit it properly, but luckily my story was so short that no errors crept in!

As I mentioned a couple of posts up, I had a story included in a book published to save Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s former home, but there’s now a poll running to vote for your favourite story and the winner will be performed and recorded by Nicholas Briggs, best known as the voice of the Daleks but who also plays Sherlock Holmes in The Big Finish audio stories.

The poll closes at midnight tonight (it’s 4 p.m. in Britain now) and currently I’m romping away in the lead but I’d love a few more votes just to make sure. The poll is here and my story is called Distraction under my writing name of Ariane DeVere.

I’m not asking you to vote completely blind: the story is here - arianedevere.livejournal.com/19253.html (I can’t put a clickable link because we’re only allowed one per post).

I’ve no idea whether I would actually be invited to the recording. It’s probably best if I’m not, ’cause I would only disgrace myself by asking if he could do it in a Dalek voice.

I submitted a design to We Love Fine's I Can Has Cats contest. Hopefully some people will like it.

Yes, I know the eyes are technically a nit, but I went with it because it tells people immediately what kind of animal it is.

By Luigi Novi (Luigi_novi) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 7:38 am:

How are the eyes a nit?

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 7:45 am:

IIRC cat's irises look round when they are in darker light conditions, they usually only appear as slits when in bright light conditions.

By Luigi Novi (Luigi_novi) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 5:05 pm:

Oh yeah. As a former cat owner, I should've know that. I guess I just viewed the image with artistic license. :-)

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Thursday, December 13, 2012 - 5:59 am:

Although if I hadn't said anything some nitpicker would have mentioned it. It was a lose/lose situation. ;-)

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Friday, December 28, 2012 - 6:05 am:

Voting for the I Can Has Cats contest has begun.

Looks like my submission has a lot of catching up to do...

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Tuesday, February 05, 2013 - 6:22 am:

I've submitted a design for We Love Fine's Power Rangers contest. Voting begins on the 18th.

I haven't been notified, but I think it's safe to say I lost the I Can Has Cats contest.

Considering that I had nine 5 votes and, at least, two designs had seventy-five 5 votes, I'll probably be getting zip, zilch and nada for my effort.

By Luigi Novi (Luigi_novi) on Tuesday, February 05, 2013 - 3:36 pm:

I'll vote for you when the rating starts. Good luck!

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Wednesday, February 06, 2013 - 4:59 am:

Thanks! :-)

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Saturday, April 06, 2013 - 5:36 am:

I have a design in We Love Fine's X-Men contest.

Funny story, I originally submitted it and another pic with dialogue (since humor, not art, is my strong point). Marvel thought the art was fine, but to cut the "word balloons".

At least this one works without dialogue, the other just became a bunch of lame headshots that poorly filled the space, so I didn't bother resubmitting it.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Thursday, April 11, 2013 - 6:18 am:

And if you want to see the one I didn't resubmit, it's up at my fanart page.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Thursday, May 09, 2013 - 5:26 am:

And the one I did resubmit is at my fanart page, with text.

By Francois Lacombe (Franc0is) on Thursday, May 09, 2013 - 3:59 pm:

That's clever

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Thursday, May 30, 2013 - 4:59 am:

I have some more designs up for competition at We Love Fine...

They have a two-part connected contest My Little Pony: Ponies vs. Villains, the winners of the two contests competing in an upcoming contest.

My Pony entry.

Ride The Lightning

My Villain entries

Cranky

Nightmare Moon Flying (yeah, after the Marvel situation I posted a wordless version, just in case.)

The Drunk Duck Awards are coming up and I did a For Your Consideration page to try and get nominations for my comic.

For those wondering about the... oddity of the page, the theme/backstory of this year's FYCs is that Drunk Duck has to raise money to put on the awards.

To be honest, I'm not sure if this is a shameless plug or a selfless plug, so I'm plaing it safe.

As you may know, Mrs. ScottN passed away from ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease). And I'm sure you've heard of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge #icebucketchallenge.

In any case, even though I've used my challenges, I'm asking you all to take the challenge... Dump a bucket of ice water over your head and explain why, or donate at least $100 to an ALS charity. Preferably do both.

Well fellow nitpickers, it's finally happened. I have written a book! It's my first go at writing, so I have some refinement to be done, but it was such an enjoyable process I set it up to be a series. The title is Pieces of the Whole and is in a genre I call tech thriller. Since that wasn't an option it's listed under crime thriller.

If you like to read sci-fi and/or murder mysteries I'd recommend checking it out, and leaving a review of course :-) You can currently find it on Amazon by following this link 204,203,200_QL40_&dpSrc=srch, here

On the Drunk Duck Quackcast they asked Duckers to turn some of their comics into a script. I did a shortened version of a Rhymes With Witch storyline and they performed it on the latest Quackcast.

The performance of my script starts at the 27.55 mark. You might have trouble with understanding some of the dialogue because of Tantz Aerine's accent.

For the first time that I can remember the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies has given awards for Drawn Features in their Bulletin Editor Awards.

1st Place
Mr & Mrs. Rockhound
Keith Alan Morgan, Author
Cascade Mineralogical Society
Keith Morgan, Editor (NFMS)

Woohoo! :-D

By Francois Lacombe (Franc0is) on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 - 4:24 am:

Congratulations. Is there a place where we can have a look?

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 - 7:38 am:

Thanks! :-)

The latest AFMS Newsletter (April/May 2018) lists the winners and a download link can be found here.

I should be getting my award plaque at the next club meeting, so I'll have to remember to snap a pic and put it online.

I'm not sure which Mr. & Mrs. Rockhound cartoon won. Our club president made the submissions and I don't know which one she picked.

Last year's newsletters are online at the Cascade Mineralogical Society website. (A bit out of order, but they're all there.)

Well, I won second place for small bulletins in the National Federation of Mineralogical Societies Bulletin Editors contest.

The specific issue I won for can be found here.

I also won first place in Best Drawn Feature, but I'm not sure exactly which one won, just that it was a Mr. & Mrs. Rockhound cartoon, but I'd guess it was the one from the May 2019 issue.

I got the awards from the NFMS today.

All of last year's Tumblers are online at the club website if you want to look at them.

The editor award was for the October 2020 issue.

The cartoon that won is in the February 2020 issue (page 3).

The puzzle that won is in the January 2020 issue (page 9).

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, April 03, 2021 - 5:20 am:

Cool.

By Francois Lacombe (Franc0is) on Saturday, April 03, 2021 - 7:04 am:

That cartoon is dark.

Congratulations.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Saturday, April 03, 2021 - 8:43 pm:

I was surprised that was the one they picked. Our president, who was making the submissions, asked me to pick 4 comics and I don't remember that being one of them and when I looked at all the comics that had run in the Tumbler there were other comics I thought would have been more likely to have won.

Always interesting to see what others like. :-)

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Saturday, July 31, 2021 - 3:52 am:

Well, the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies Bulletin Editors awards have been announced.

A bit of an explanation first. The AFMS is the group over seven regional mineralogical societies. The winners in the regional awards get submitted to the AFMS bulletin editors contest, so the NFMS wins I mentioned back in February were compared to other regional winners.

I didn't do quite as well at the national level.

2nd Place Small Bulletin – The CMS Tumbler – Keith Morgan

2nd Place Drawn or Special Features – Cabbing Shapes and Stuff Puzzle – Keith Morgan

3rd Place Drawn or Special Features - This Rock Is Amazing Cartoon - Keith Morgan

I'm sorry, but was ScottN on that show? I was completely distracted by that gorgeous blonde host, Brooke Burns. I would have got zero points if I'd played thanks to her hotness!

Brooke: "The blah-blah-blah of the blah-blah has a blah-blah-blah-blah. What's your answer, Steve?"
Me; "Um...I love you!"
