Continuation of a conversation from the Best/Worst thread. Everybody, it seems, has a favourite Far Side...
The slugs worshipping their salt cellar 'god', "Eeeeny-Oooony-Waaaanah".
I also like some of the cartoons that didn't make it, in one of the Collections.
I like the one where a man named Edgar is ripped to shreds by a werewolf whose necktie looks suspiciously similar to the one worn by the salesman who earlier in the day told Edgar, "Oh, yes! I guarantee these bullets are pure silver!"
Another funny one is of a couple sitting on a couch in a woman's house, and they're looking up at a painting of themselves sitting on the same couch with a knife-wielding madman behind them. The woman says, "Leonard painted that and hung it up just this afternoon...He calls it, It's My Couch! My Couch! Don't They Understand?"
And one that was in the Off-the-wall calendar just a few days ago was good. A father and son are watching wolves prowl through the next door neighbor's house. "I know you miss the Wainwrights, Bobby, but they were weak and stu-pid people, and that's why we have wolves and other large predators."
Now I've made myself out to be rather morbid. Oh well.
Kerrie-
Regarding the Lone Ranger panel you mentioned on the previous board... it serves the Lone Ranger right after spending all those years calling his partner "dummy."
King Mob,
I too liked the ones that didn't make it in that collection. My favorites though were for non-comic strip reasons. The public reaction to "Cow Tools" was priceless, and the mix up over tag lines with Dennis the Menace (birds in nest asking Mommy bird if they can have Peanut Butter and Jelly instead while Dennis' Mom while giving him lunch hears him say "Eww, regurgitated worms again!") I still laugh when I think of those.
Dennis (to mom): I see your skull resting on a shelf... (line mixup)
The python through the baby crib. (unprinted) Larson's comment: You didn't see that.
My dad likes the one with the guys on a boat while the mushroom clouds go off. "I'll tell you what this means, no maximum number and screw the size limit."
(May not be exact quotes)
You beat me to the python cartoon, KAM. I love the snake's bemused expression.
Other favourites:
The scientist who invents the 'Dog Translator'.
Dogs: Hey! Hey! Hey, hey, hey, hey! Hey!
The scientist who is tapping in the final rivet of a nuclear missile, while another scientist stands behind him, about to explode a paper bag...
And of course, Homer Simpson flicking through a Far Side calendar:
Homer: Don't get it [flip] Don't get it [flip] Don't get it [flip]....
"Know your Barbarians". A four panel.
Panel 1: Goth
Panel 2: Visigoth
Panel 3: Hun
Panel 4: Mitch
Personally, nothing beats the cows who only go down on four legs when one of them sees a car approaching. I cried with laughter when I first saw that one.
I'm not sure this is Far Side, but it may be:
The bears queueing up to use the lavatory shack just outside the woods...
The Far Side thats been in my mind forever is the two sharks swimming just off shore and yelling "BEAR!"
That's a good one.
Here's another...
A lady's in the forest pushing a Hoover upright.
Don't remember the exact caption, but the punchline is that "she knew that nature abhorred a vacuum."
The python one reminds me of another fave...
"Baby toys and gifts to avoid this Christmas"
including, "Brahma Buddy" (a mechanical bull),
a collapsible piano (collapses at one touch!), and others that I can't remember right now...
Is this a Far Side or just something similar:
A bug is sitting on a dock with water skis on his feet, holing onto the a rope attached to a boat. When the boat drives off, the bugs arms simply pop off and the bug says "dang it, not again!"
There's a fellow I know at school who wears a shirt with the above cartoon on it. It's a hoot, since he actually has no arms!
I love the "Floating Head of Death".
And the nursery next to the dingo pen.
And the scientists trying to unlock the speech of dolphins ("bwaynos dee-as", "kay pa-sah", and a few others). That one made me laugh out loud.
My all time favorite is the one of the farmer standing behind a cow whose just been caught holding a picture of the farmer thats been divided up into sections labeled things like "spare ribs" "through away" "rump roast" etc. The caption reads "off in the distance a dog howled"
I still have some Far Side books
Good for you.
