I tried looking for an appropriate board for this, but wasn't sure if any truly were, so perhaps this can be a board where posters can make requests of specific moderators, or perhaps Phil Farrand.
I emailed Gordon Lawyer several days ago about creating a Peter David board on the Fantasy Novels boards, because I wanted to post on his novels Knight Life, and the recently released sequel, One Knight Only, which I just finished. Posting is disabled on the Main Page for the Fantasy Novels board, as is the Create a New Converstation button, so in case he doesn't check his email regularly, hopefully he'll see it here.
How about it, Gordon?
Isn't there a "Poke the Moderator with a Stick" board?
Yes but, it's for NextGen only.
On the other hand, I could always put a suggestion for a Battlestar Galactica (the tv series) board here in the Suggestion Box... (I was over at "Hey, Moderator!")
I left you a message about it at "Hey, Moderator" Craig
Yep, I saw that. Thanks.
From the What Boards Would You like to See Here thread. Seemed silly to fragment the discussion any further. - Mod
By googs goog on Sunday, November 09, 2003 - 10:10 am:
I'm not volunteering to mod these because I don't have time, among other reasons. But here are a couple boards I'd like to see:
The Sopranos
The Dick van Dyke Show (now that the DVDs are finally out and I'm watching them in order, all restored.)
I'm not surprised that there's no DvD board, but it's a little surprising there's no Soprano one.
By Brian Webber on Sunday, November 09, 2003 - 03:16 pm:
The Sopranos can be found on the Crime & Jusitce Shows board moderated by Sax Russel.
Century City premiered on CBS last week.
It's about an L.A. law firm in 2030, dealing with future technology and crime.
It's on Tuesdays at 9pm. I missed the first one, but caught the second episode.
It was pretty good, but had some nits.
Do many people want a board for this show?
OK 2 things.
1: I have sent an email to Luigi Novi at his yahoo account asking for him to open a dialogue with me through email since he apparently does not wish to discus things in public here or be reasonable. I would like to come to a peaceful and equitable resolution of this issue as it is rather pointless and childish for him to ignore me (except to deltete my posts) and for me to continue posting for him to delete. But if Luigi wants to play the game that way then I'll keep going til he wants to work out a compromise.
2: I would like to make a motion or open for consideration after this rather blatent abuse of moderatorial power a new rule. That a moderator who is involved in an argument with a poster on that moderator's board cannot be the one to authorize a "ban" on that poster but must ask for public review or an impartial judgement from a non-involved moderator. I mena Luigi claims he can be objective enough but no-one is capable of being that objective when they are a part of the problem. And besides which the precedence is already there in our legal system as liek I have said repeatedly you do not allow the lawyer's in a case to also be the judge. That is becuase there is no way on the planet for anyone to be objective enough to be able to render a fair and honest judgement when they are involved in the situation. I have already emailed this idea and several other discussions to Mr Farrand.
And yes I do realize that to continue this is somewhat beating a dead horse but thats another one of my hobbies and all Luigi has done with every action and everythign he has said has just gotton my back up about htis and I will not let it go until either there is a fair and equitable resolution. Or a revolution. Either one works.
We should have a board for anthologies, especially the STRANGE NEW WORLDS Star Trek anthologies.
Isn't there a board for Trek books? Who's the moderator of that board?
Luigi, the Mod for that board is Robert Donahou. I don't know if he's still active or if he's among the Mods gone missing.
And furthermore, there are sections for non-Trek Anthologies in the 2 book boards I mod, Scifi Novels and Non-Scifi Novels. None in Fantasy though.
“Primeval”, anyone? Did any Brits watch this all the way through? It’s coming to BBC America in the summer – will any Americans be watching it?
For those who’ve not heard of it, or don’t recall what it’s about, it’s a drama series which has now ended its second season in the UK and has been a surprise hit. Aimed at a similar audience to Doctor Who viewers, it’s a sci-fi drama about time portals which open into the modern day and allow access to and from mostly prehistoric Earth. The CGI creatures which appear in our world are created by the same company who made the Walking with Dinosaurs documentary series.
Despite its shortcomings and occasionally poor and disappointing CGI, it has gathered quite a cult audience amongst both kids and adults, and had some interesting character development and interaction. A set of action figures featuring the main cast (and monsters!) went on sale last Christmas, and a third season is currently being filmed.
The official website is here, though I don’t know whether you can access it if you’re not in Britain.
If there’s any interest, I would happily contact Phil and volunteer to moderate it.
Would love it, but I really need to see both series again as I missed basically every episode of series one, and watched series two for the sheer enjoyment factor! It was a very silly programme which was highly enjoyable, mainly because it hasn't, as yet, tried to get above itself. Whilst the actors take it seriously, there is a feeling that someone's tongue is firmly in their cheek and Ben Miller's one liners and delivery sets it above other silly programmes.
Veoh.com has episodes up, but you have to download them to see the whole thing apparently otherwise you just get 5 minutes.
Unfortunately I only have access to the internet at work, and I'm not allowed to download stuff! Thanks anyway, I might buy the lot on DVD, I think they're not too expensive.
The boxset of Seasons 1 and 2 is £26 on sendit.com. Be warned: the scrolling menu for Season 2 will drive you nuts; and there's a brilliant piece of idiocy where they put the menu for the Extras on Season 2 in white text - on a white background(!)
I agree that Ben Miller as Lester completely stole the show and was given some great lines. My absolute favourite (quoting from memory):
Lester: "Let's fill the basement with several thousand tons of concrete to cover the anomaly."
Leek: "Shall I speak to the contractors about it, sir?"
Lester: "No, don't bother. I'll get a shovel and a cement mixer and do it myself. (pause) Of course you should speak to the contractors, you idiot!"
YES!!!! That line and the one about the Mammoth. Absolutely the best for delivery. I did actually believe him when he was going on about getting a shovel.
Do you feel like adding a board for fanfiction?
To be honest I don't have the link. I saw it a few days ago but don't remember where it was, I'll keep you posted.
I don't want to mention names because I don't want to make it personal and start an argument, but can people please stop posting things that are extremely obvious, or posts that say only "I didn't see that" or "That's interesting" and nothing else? Or posting something on a very short thread that someone else has already said? I check here every few months and there are a lot of interesting posts here, which is why I still come back. I just don't post much. But these pointless posts really clutter up the recent post search for no good reason.
Maybe I'm the only one that's annoyed, but the vast majority of people here are not doing that.
I'm not asking for rules, just for people to keep it in mind and not make posts that have no meaningful content. Think: what if everybody did that (the nature of the posts is such that anyone literally could, which is a good guideline)? Nobody would want to be here.
Dude, the reason that not many come here anymore has nothing to do with short answers. Rather the reason is the rise of Social Media such as Facebook, Twitter, and other such places, which had drawn younger folks to them. The idea that this place will ever return to its glory days of the turn of the century, when posting here was massive, is, to be honest, nonsense.
With one or two exceptions, all the posters here are 50 or older. Most have probably been here since this place started and remain here out of loyalty. But we must face the reality is that our "vast majority", as you put it, is less than enough to fill a Jury box, and that number is only gonna decrease, not increase.
My advice, just relax and enjoy the site, quirks and all.
So I shouldn't complain about something that annoys me, like pointless posts? OK, then no one should complain about Jeff anymore.
And it's not short answers. It's posts that have no meaningful content. I see a topic that I like that has new messages and I think, "Great, I want to see what they have to say." And then I click it and it's "well, that's pointless, that one too, that one too, etc." It doesn't waste a lot of time but it's so unnecessary.
It's not that much trouble just to ask yourself, "Would anyone be interested in this?" before posting.
I agree that posts consisting of just 'I agree' or 'Could be,' etc. show that the person's desire to post outweighs their desire to engage in the discourse.
I agree
Winters has run rampage in the Console Video Game section with his nonsense posts.
Of course, said section is currently without a Moderator.
Not for the first time, I'm tempted to close all non-Moderated sections to posting. Of course, I'll do no such thing without input from the other Mods.
What sections don't have Moderators?
Look in the Moderator Directory (here in this section) for details.
