Hey (Kitchen Sink) Moderator! II

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: The Kitchen Sink: NitCentralia: Hey (Kitchen Sink) Moderator! II

For Sink-specific queries. The Moderator promises to address everything she can, as soon as she can...and in return would appreciate not being yelled at (unless she really deserves it, in which case see Miscellaneous Emergencies.)
By Kerriem (Kerriem) on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 5:57 pm:

So it's getting to be about that time of year again...no, besides that. It's time for me to start thinking about getting the Topics page ready for the new year.
So I'm looking at this wonderful embarrassment of riches - dozens of threads on a broad spectrum of fascinating topics.

And I'm thinking "What the [bleep] do I DO with it all?"

Seriously, it's getting crowded in here. Hard-to-navigate crowded. Crowded to the extent that potential posters might just give up in bewilderment.

So before I do this year's reorg I need to ask: What are the ethics of deleting threads? I'm talking ancient old ones that never went anywhere, or ones that served a specific purpose that no longer exists. I'm also thinking of combining nearly identical threads into one.
Objections, questions, opinions everyone?

By Electron on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 8:20 pm:

You could create something like the "Vault of the Lost Threads" where the ancient ones can wait for lone visitors.

By Butch Brookshier on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 8:30 pm:

Kerrie, on the boards I mod when a topic hasn't had any discussion for a certain amount of time, I disable posting and move it to one of my 'cleverly' named holding areas (ex.,"The Mod's Dusty Attic") where it can be seen if anyone is interested. If someone wants to post on it again, they can leave me a message in the appropriate comments topic for that board. However, whether that would work here is uncertain to me.
Something else that I think makes things neater is when a topic goes long enough to warrant a part 2 is I make the next part a subtopic at the top of the first part. I feel this makes it easy to find and helps keep the sub-sections from getting cluttered with long lists of assorted parts 2, 3, 4, etc. from different beginning topics.
That's my thoughts FWIW. :)

By Butch Brookshier on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 8:37 pm:

Also, when I took over NextGen, it had been without a mod for about three years. I had to prune a lot of stuff. Some of it I backed up on my own computer just in case but, a lot was way off topic and/or irrelevant or violated the rules here and I just deleted them.

By Snick the Packrat on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 8:51 pm:

Ugh...that goes against my grain something fierce. Thank goodness for the Internet Archive Project and site-download programs.

By Blue Berry on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 3:06 am:

Kerriem,

As the sole poster on some of those one and out topics; Save space. Let your delete key reign.

By Blue Berry on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 3:07 am:

Hey if anyone is upset about it it will take him a long time to notice!:)

By ScottN on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 9:30 am:

Can the Video Games mod or a Roving mod do something about that annoying crud topic in the Video Game sink?

By kerriem the Moderator on Thursday, January 01, 2004 - 9:23 pm:

Scott, please note the thread for shout-outs to other board Mods just below this one. :)

Thanks everybody for the great suggestions. After quite a lot of thought I've decided to go with this plan:

--Any thread (in any forum) wherein the last post is pre-2000 and has less than four or five replies is toast. Snick, I'm sorry, but there's just too many random odds-and-ends floating around here (like the thread in Trek Related started just to rant about an ep not being shown that night...)

NB - This of course doesn't apply to earlier parts of multi-part topics. Those will be dealt with just as soon as I figure out how Butch does that nifty internal-linking thingee (or he's nice enough to tell me...:O)

--Post-2000 threads with less than four-five responses will be checked over and if possible integrated with similar threads. If not, deletion will be considered, but only as a total last resort.

--Pre-2002 threads with long discussions that have since petered out for whatever reason will be moved to the new Kitchen Attic (thank you again, Butch...) where they will be available for reading but disabled from posting unless somebody asks to have them reopened.

2002-2003 Topics will be moved into the Topic Vault, and a new 2004 forum opened.

...So there you have it, a good chunk of my Sunday. :) Please let me know before then if you've got any threads you specially want saved, or if you have any questions or comments in general.

By Butch Brookshier on Friday, January 02, 2004 - 6:08 pm:

Kerrie, do you mean where I've got a group of threads at the top of discussion like for ST:Nemesis?

By kerriem on Friday, January 02, 2004 - 9:55 pm:

Right. Or like the way you've set up the Marrissa Stories discussion in your Sink.

By Butch Brookshier on Saturday, January 03, 2004 - 1:12 pm:

Go into administration.
Select the topic where you want the various parts to end up.
On the page setup section put a checkmark in the "List of Subtopics" box and click the "Save changes" button.
Now you can move other threads into that topic just like moving an individual post or create new ones.

By ScottN on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 - 9:10 am:

Hi Kerrie!

Just so you'll know, pursuant to some discussions in the Astronomy Class, I created a board under "Science Related" for "Space Missions". On the initial post, I asked for politics to be kept out, but you know how it is... you might want to keep an eye on it once we start posting.

By kerriem on Thursday, March 25, 2004 - 8:38 am:

Thanks for the tip, Scott.

I'll actually be reading that thread with interest anyway. That's part of the appeal of moderating the Sink - I don't have to go hunting through the Net etc to satisfy my love of research and trivia, it all comes to me. :O

By CR on Thursday, March 25, 2004 - 9:39 am:

And here at NitCentral, you don't get all those annoying pop-up ads!

By Kerriem (Kerriem) on Friday, April 09, 2004 - 12:46 pm:

Yes! When I eventually do put my fist through the screen because of those things, it won't be at NitC.

By Snick on Friday, April 09, 2004 - 1:03 pm:

Kerrie, I have just what you need.

Pop-Up Stopper

Great program, and FREE for download. Highly recommend it.

By ScottN on Friday, April 09, 2004 - 2:09 pm:

Get Mozilla. It has built-in popup blocking.

By Evil IE User on Friday, April 09, 2004 - 3:05 pm:

Some people don't like how Mozilla displays...:-)

By ScottN on Friday, April 09, 2004 - 3:47 pm:

That's because Moz follows the standards and doesn't display "broken" HTML, unlike your Evil IE! :)

By Sparrow47 on Friday, April 09, 2004 - 5:35 pm:

You know, I tried downloading Mozilla, but I literally couldn't get the thing to install! I eventually gave up and went with Netscape instead.

By roger on Wednesday, September 08, 2004 - 3:47 pm:

I just made a new conversation in
Media/TV More Or Less.

And now I think it should go in
"They Don't Have a Board Yet."

The title I used was "One Nit per show".

How much time and effort does it take to move it?

Or maybe you think it's fine where it is?

Thanks.

By KAM on Wednesday, September 08, 2004 - 11:19 pm:

roger, you could have posted those same nits on Miscellaneous Nits VI.

By John A. Lang on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 12:07 pm:

Norbert is back....AGAIN.

By Influx on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 12:45 pm:

Isn't it always on Friday?

By ScottN on Sunday, October 17, 2004 - 3:48 pm:

Moderator -- Somebody named Dan is trolling (NOTE: TROLL IS MY OPINION).

By ScottN on Sunday, October 17, 2004 - 3:49 pm:

Oh, and I'd have said the same thing if he was trolling for Kerry.

By Benn on Sunday, October 17, 2004 - 4:58 pm:

I'd say he was a troll. If not a troll, then certainly a smart-ass who's not interested in having a real dialogue, but spewing sound bites. The sad thing is how Brian Webber is such a knee-jerk liberal that he's automatically fighting back. Webber's argument can be enough to turn anyone away from liberalism. There's so much anger and hatred in them. (But that's just my opinion.)

By Brian Webber on Sunday, October 17, 2004 - 9:32 pm:

Benn: Haven't I been the one laughing at this guy's rather obvious straw man set-up? C'monl even Peter wasn't as big a jerk as "Dan," who I still say doesn't actually exist. I'm telling you guys, we've been punk'd.

By Snick on Monday, October 18, 2004 - 10:12 am:

Webber, your memory's failing. Peter was a bigger jerk, but over a longer period of time. :-)

By roger on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 11:16 am:

I have another suggestion. As if Nitcentral wasn't big enough already, how about a fan fiction board? You'd have to have limits, of course. Each piece has to be reasonably short; each piece has its own thread, so the comments would be only for that particular piece; the fanfics of all genres would remain in one section of Nitcentral; off-topic comments could be ruthlessly deleted.
I don't know of other places where they have comments and feedback on fanfic...but I haven't been looking. I like this place because I would be getting feedback. I hope.
So does a fanfic spot sound like a good idea?

By constanze on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 11:50 am:

On www.fanfiction.net, there's the possibility to give reviews to each fanfic. It also contains quite a lot of stories.

Or do you mean specific nitpicking of fanfic stories?

By roger on Friday, October 22, 2004 - 11:29 am:

Either would be fine with me. :)

By Snick on Friday, October 22, 2004 - 3:13 pm:

A fanfic board here would be pretty fun. Keeping it in the community, as it were.

By Hannah F., West Wing/C&J Moderator (Cynicalchick) on Tuesday, January 04, 2005 - 9:39 pm:

Moderator Directory

I now moderate Crime & Justice Shows, and there are a few new boards. :)

By LUIGI NOVI on Wednesday, January 05, 2005 - 7:51 am:

Congratulations, Hannah!

By Hannah F., West Wing/C&J Moderator (Cynicalchick) on Saturday, January 08, 2005 - 10:54 pm:

Thanks, honey.

And why aren't you on AIM anymore? Work got ya down, buddy?

By A Norse of a Different Color on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 5:09 pm:

I just posted a new conversation under Humor; Politically Incorrect.
I'm curious to know if people think it's funny and/or tasteless. I'm sorry if it's not even funny, but you can delete it if you want.

(I wonder if my apologetic attitude detracts from the supposed humor of my witticism?)

I just did a search for the phrase "politically incorrect" and the browser window spontaneously closes. Why does it do that? The search function worked a few minutes ago, but not now.
Thanks.

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, March 11, 2005 - 3:18 am:

Moderator? Where is the current board for Miscelleanous Emergencies? I wanted to make a suggestion on the spambot matter, but couldn't find it.

By Thande on Friday, March 11, 2005 - 6:36 am:

Luigi, it's right at the bottom - for some reason it wasn't included with the other Miscellaneous Emergencies boards.

By TomM on Friday, March 11, 2005 - 11:08 am:

I believe that the new board was added by its first poster. I haven't seen any postings by Kerriem in months....

I hope everything's OK.

By KAM on Saturday, June 03, 2006 - 8:58 pm:

Mark, noticed on a couple of threads that you were going to close the Sink for a week while you were gone.

I still have my moderator sign-in so if you want me to keep an eye on the Sink for a week, let me know.

By Mark Morgan, Kitchen Sink Mod (Mmorgan) on Saturday, June 03, 2006 - 10:56 pm:

Keith, that would be great. I think the main concern I had has agreed to limit himself to one thread, but it would be very much appreciated.

By R on Sunday, June 04, 2006 - 8:35 am:

Yes Mark I will restrain myself to the one thread. I guess this will have to be a grudge that goes to the grave since Luigi doesnt wanna work things out or be an adult about this.

And I am doing this becaue I respect you and you have done right by me all along here. When a person does right by someone they can get a lot better reaction out of a person.

By KAM on Saturday, June 10, 2006 - 8:28 pm:

Mark from the R! board - I thought KAM was watching the Sink while I was gone.
I was.

I admit I did leave Rene's first "get a life" comment, but only because other posters had responded to it* by the time I got here & I wasn't sure if you wanted the responses deleted as well. I did delete his second posting though.

* Why on Earth does anyone feel the need to respond to trolls? They don't care about your opinion. Just ignore them & let the mods delete them. Eventually they'll get bored and go somewhere else.

By MikeC on Saturday, June 10, 2006 - 9:06 pm:

Question: Why do you close the thread after it returns to a reasonable level of civility? The last few posts were extremely innocuous.

Note: Not saying it was wrong, just curious to see your reasoning.

By Mark Morgan, Kitchen Sink Mod (Mmorgan) on Sunday, June 11, 2006 - 8:52 am:

Because it was very late, and I was hugely jetlagged. I'll reopen it.

By Mark Morgan, Kitchen Sink Mod (Mmorgan) on Sunday, June 11, 2006 - 10:11 am:

For those who saw it for the two minutes it was open, there was a topic opened today that was created solely to insult one poster. I removed it.

By R on Sunday, June 11, 2006 - 10:38 am:

KAM: Sorry I don't just let thigns go and ignore them, its not in me to do that.

Mark: Thank you I am trying to be nice here. For what its worth considering things. Anyhow, Thank you for your kind treatment.

By Anonymous on Sunday, June 11, 2006 - 12:20 pm:

Can someone open up the Drive Me Crazy rants

By Mark Morgan, Kitchen Sink Mod (Mmorgan) on Sunday, June 11, 2006 - 12:59 pm:

Instead, I have created a new board linked from the first.

By ScottN on Saturday, October 21, 2006 - 9:24 pm:

Putting this here because the Misc Emergencies boards are closed.

The Dump is visible to mere mortals.

By Mark Morgan, Kitchen Sink Mod (Mmorgan) on Saturday, October 21, 2006 - 11:42 pm:

Fixed.

By Influx on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 6:30 am:

Luigi, I can't post on the movies board. Says I'm banned. :(

By Adam Selene on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 7:29 am:

That would be a surprise why? Luigi is way too ban happy. Part of his little feifdom building plans. Drive away anyone who disagrees with him, get rewarded for sucky, hypocritical behavior on his part and then next thing you know its Luigicentral!

By Mark Morgan, Kitchen Sink Mod (Mmorgan) on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 8:54 am:

Give it a rest, Adam.

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 9:01 am:

I'll look into it as soon as I get a chance. Sorry for the inconvenience, Influx.

By Polls Voice on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 9:18 am:

Mind you, it could have happened prior to Luigi taking over as moderator..

Now movie along, movie along, nothing to see here...

By Influx on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 9:47 am:

For debugging reasons, here's the message I got:
"Authentication Error
The system administrator has banned any posts originating from your computer and/or provider. Contact the administrator of this board for more information. If you have a valid user or moderator account for this discussion, you may still use that username and password to post."

I figure it's something due to the reorganization rather than any intent on Luigi's part.

By ScottN on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 10:14 am:

I wonder if it's due to the Full IP block due to the spammer(as opposed to targeted-IPs) false-positiving you rather than anything in particular.

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 11:04 am:

Influx and Art Vandelay: Can you try posting on PM or LM just to see if you get the same result?

And no, I can assure it was most certainly not any intent on my part.

By Influx on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 12:06 pm:

Nope. Doesn't work on either of those, either.

uno -- "Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity."--Hanlon's Razor :) Or in this case, ignorance of what the problem is, is all. No insult intended, nor malice attributed.

I'm sure the problem will get worked out.

By Mark Morgan, Kitchen Sink Mod (Mmorgan) on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 12:45 pm:

Parties responsible for the deleted message know how to contact me so I can explain why they are no longer welcome here.

By Mark Morgan, Kitchen Sink Mod (Mmorgan) on Monday, October 23, 2006 - 2:39 pm:

Lord love a duck. Don't hit the wrong button in the Access Manager.

By dotter31 on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 12:26 pm:

Moderator, there is a flaming post on the Star Trek 11 board that needs to be deleted.

By Butch Brookshier (Butchmod) on Monday, January 15, 2007 - 5:49 pm:

Taken care of, Dotter. Thanks.

By Keith Alan Morgan, Kitchen Sink Moderator on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 4:21 pm:

There seems to be quite a bit of confusion over who the Kitchen Sink Moderator is.

It's me. I took over as mod back in June when Mark stepped down.

There's even a note mentioning it on the front page of the Kitchen Sink.

Luigi, Butch, MikeC & whomever else people have been naming are not the moderator of the Kitchen Sink (at least not yet.)

Keith Alan Morgan, aka KAM, Kitchen Sink Mod

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 7:49 pm:

Sorry, Keith. It's like Nitcentral is one of those dinner murder mystery things.

"Who is the moderator?

Is it Luigi Novi, the arrogant Italian artist from New Jersey with the funny headings and the shifty eye?

Is it Mike Cheyne, the suspicious-looking Michiganite withe the friendly disposition that masks a hidden conservative agenda?

Is the secretive Australian Keith Morgan, whose cunning web comics may contain clues to his dastardly scheme?

Or is it.....................the BUTLER??????"

By The Electric Company on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 10:56 pm:

And what about .... NAOMI?

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 11:38 pm:

Dude, Naomi's the one who's been killed. Haven't you been paying attention? Sheesh.

:-)

By Callie on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 - 2:03 am:

Silly, silly Luigi. That's what they want you to think ...

By Butch Brookshier on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 - 4:58 pm:

Well, I am the Mod for the ST 11 discussion mentioned by Dotter above. It's just in the wrong thread.

Butch

Is he the redneck yokel his appearance and address would seem to indicate or is there something more sinister going on beneath the bib overalls and facial hair.

By Keith Alan Morgan, Kitchen Sink Moderator on Tuesday, June 24, 2008 - 4:39 am:

I moved the various TV threads from They Don't Have A Board Yet to a new folder Specific Show Discussions in the TV More Or Less folder in the Media folder.

A few other threads got moved to the Internet & Celebrity sections as well.

By ScottN on Wednesday, July 02, 2008 - 5:44 pm:

It's Phil's quota, as far as I know.

Web hosting usuallt says either, "You pay $X for each MB that people download from your site per month(including webpages)", or "People get to donwload a total of Y GB per month from your site".

Either we've been hitting Phil really hard, or his hosting service screwed up.

By Polls Voice on Wednesday, July 02, 2008 - 8:09 pm:

might have something to do with the spamming

By Callie on Friday, July 04, 2008 - 2:39 am:

I had it too a couple of times last night but it seems to be behaving this morning. Hopefully just a temporary glitch - or have I killed the board by asking Phil to set up a Primeval topic?!

By KAM on Friday, July 04, 2008 - 4:40 am:

Yes, it's all your fault.

;-)

If that were actually the case Phil could solve it by deleting some of the topics that have died. (Brimstone comes to mind.)

I got the message last night & earlier tonight.

By Callie on Friday, July 04, 2008 - 5:49 am:

Don't tell ScottN it's my fault, he'll be digging out the nishta again!

By Polls Voice on Friday, July 04, 2008 - 2:22 pm:

Is Phil the only one who can delete entire topics on the main page? (To test whether that's the issue)

By ScottN on Friday, July 04, 2008 - 4:54 pm:

OK, Callie.... Drags out the nishta.

Oh darn. You've already been nishta'ed. It only works once. I guess we'll just have to create a RepliCallie! :-O

By Butch Brookshier on Friday, July 04, 2008 - 5:48 pm:

Polls Voice, yea, only Phil can do that or I would have closed or combined a few that I mod.

By KAM on Saturday, July 05, 2008 - 4:24 am:

You've already been nishta'ed. It only works once.
How about Nishquadria or Quadronishtacallie?

By Polls Voice (Polls_voice) on Friday, August 22, 2008 - 3:38 pm:

Somehow, likely during all the IP address banning that's gone on, my IP address has been blocked for the movies boards.

Normally I'm at my apartment and can view Luigi's fine collection of links to movie posters, but other times, like right now, I'm at my family's house and like to post nits in Nitcentral; but can't on the movies board because the part of the IP address for this region is blocked. Could someone (preferebly someone with legitimate admin access on this site) look up the IP address of this post and look to see if the region is blocked on some boards or something and unblock it?

By Butch Brookshier (Bbrookshier) on Friday, August 22, 2008 - 4:45 pm:

Roving Mod capabilities can be useful in many ways.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Sunday, August 24, 2008 - 10:13 am:

Okay, I removed that IP from the restricted list. If problems arise again from an IP similar to that one, I'll have to block that specific one, and not the entire range.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Sunday, September 14, 2008 - 4:04 am:

Okayyyyyyyy...

Rants is history. A little whining & complaining in normal, but some people have been turning the boards into a whinefest.

If you want to complain about your life get a LiveJournal account or one of those other blog thingies.

I've moved a bunch of threads from Rants, Topic Vaults & Topic Attic into Stuff Waiting To Be Sorted.

Any suggestions for new places to place some of this stuff, or threads to be merged, will be appreciated.

Offhand it looks like there might be enough threads for a section about Weather & another about Grammar & maybe enough for Cars.

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Klingon) on Saturday, September 27, 2008 - 3:35 pm:

The movies boards are blocked for me for some reason at this IP address. I made a message like this a little bit ago stating that I'm blocked in viewing the movies boards while at my parents' house; and that I'd test to see if it was fixed the next time I was there. Well, I'm testing it and I'm still blocked for some reason. My IP address might vary while here too because I think I get one randomly when I'm here, so if my neighborhood is blocked for some reason, unblocking one IP might not fix things.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Sunday, September 28, 2008 - 1:43 pm:

Butch? Which IP is this? Thanks.

By Butch Brookshier (Bbrookshier) on Sunday, September 28, 2008 - 2:44 pm:

Hmmm, comes up exactly the same as above.

By Butch Brookshier (Bbrookshier) on Sunday, September 28, 2008 - 2:48 pm:

However when I checked Poll's other post above, it shows as:
74.215.197.2

Hope this helps.

By Luigi_novi (Luigi_novi) on Sunday, September 28, 2008 - 5:56 pm:

Hmmm...that does not appear among the IP ranges blocked in the Movies Access Manager. But I put it in under "Allow". Let me know if it helps, Torque. :-)

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Klingon) on Monday, September 29, 2008 - 5:05 pm:

I saw the movies board while at my parents house again so hopefully what you did is the fix. Thanks.

PS, is there another board I should be posting these in given that this board is technically the Kitchen Sink Hey Moderator board?

By stephen on Saturday, April 04, 2009 - 1:55 pm:

In the lists of topics or subtopics, why are some in boldface?

Have you decided yet on a fanfiction section where we can discuss or post fanfiction? Thanks.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Sunday, April 05, 2009 - 1:28 am:

Because when I was organizing the various threads to specific categories I needed an easy way to differentiate between folders & threads so I bolded them & just didn't remove the bolding when I moved the folders to the main folder.

I should think posting fanfiction here could cause legal problems for the Chief, what with Copyright owners sending him Cease & Desist emails.

However there is a place called Fanfiction.net where you could probably post fanfics.

The M*A*S*H board has a section for discussing fanfiction.

NextGen has a section for discussing Stephen Ratliff's Marissa stories. (The horror, the horror! ;-)

I thought Non-Sci-Fi novels had a fanfiction section, but I didn't see it when glanced through the contents. So if you want to create a thread for Fanfics here go ahead.

The Internet More Or Less subtropic would probably be a good spot for it (under the Media folder).

By roger on Sunday, May 10, 2009 - 5:56 pm:

This should go in TV More or Less/Comedies but I can't start a new thread there.

Why hasn't anybody started a thread on "The Big Bang Theory"? It's not even mentioned here.

By Kitchen Sink Moderator on Monday, May 11, 2009 - 6:18 am:

A Start New Thread button has been added there.

By Keith alan Morgan, Kitchen Sink Moderator on Thursday, July 30, 2009 - 12:17 am:

47s, & whatever other names you use, will you stop using Nitcentral as your personal whine-about-your-life blog?

Get a Facebook, Myspace or Twitter account if you want to pester people with your made up little fictions about how awful your life is.

It seems like all you do here is whine about your life & when someone asks for proof you refuse to give any then pester me to delete posts.

I AM SICK & TIRED OF DEALING WITH YOU!

And frankly I think quite a few posters would wish you would stop posting entirely.

1. Take your whining elsewhere!

2. Read what a thread is supposed to be for instead of just posting whatever rambling nonsense is going through your head!

By KAM on Friday, July 31, 2009 - 12:44 am:

I'll admit I lost my temper when I wrote that rant, but I had been looking at several posts of yours on boards that were unrelated to what you were talking about & did not feel it was my job to move your posts to the proper threads, if any.

Stay on topic for the threads & I'll try not to lose my temper.

By roger on Friday, January 01, 2010 - 8:43 pm:

Happy New Year!
I don't know which boards I can post to without registering first. Could those boards be listed somewhere? Or would that be making it too easy to spambots and others? Thanks.

By Callie on Saturday, January 02, 2010 - 12:41 pm:

Happy new year, Roger.

One of the ways you can tell is to look at the bottom of the topic you want to post to. If, below the "Add a Message" box, there are just two boxes, one for Username and one for Password, together with the message "This is a private posting area. Only registered users and moderators may post messages here" then you need to be registered.

If the area under "Add a Message" has three boxes, for Username, Password and E-mail, together with the message "This is a public posting area. Enter your username and password if you have an account. Otherwise, enter your full name as your username and leave the password blank. Your e-mail address is optional" then it's free and open to post on.

I hope that's right! Other Mods will correct me if I'm wrong.

Done.

By Nove Rockhoomer (Noverockhoomer) on Monday, August 09, 2010 - 9:39 pm:

Luigi, if you're still the Voyager moderator, I noticed three episodes in the seventh season that quote posts from earlier on the board that don't exist. In other words, some posts seem to be missing. The episodes are Imperfection, Drive and Repression. I've been reading the Voyager boards up to that point and don't recall noticing this previously. Repression, in particular, is a very small board compared to an average Voyager episode.

Are we supposed to be able to contact moderators through the contact link on the left? All I see is the profiles of the moderators - no e-mail address. And there appears to be no moderator message board under the Voyager topic.

By Luigi Novi (Luigi_novi) on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 - 9:00 pm:

I don't know where to ask this but all the posts, and there were a lot, that has shown up today appears like SPAM. They all have different ladies' names, aren't posting about anything specific, and yet not saying anything negative. It's a bit strange but I doubt Nitcentral has that many new people posting on the site in one day, let alone women.

By Luigi Novi (Luigi_novi) on Saturday, November 05, 2011 - 4:47 am:

Is this thing on?

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Thursday, May 30, 2013 - 7:08 pm:

Hey, Keith, in the Specific Shows discussion in the TV More Or Less section of the Sink, there is the following notice:

Note: The Chief has banned discussion of The Simpsons & Charmed, so no threads for them.

Since these bans are no longer in effect, perhaps you should remove this notice.

By KAM on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 - 6:50 am:

Because I tried to ban a troll, but something wasn't working right.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 - 6:53 am:

Okay, back to private.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 - 2:51 pm:

Excellent.

I wonder if this troll is who I think it is, namely someone who has caused trouble countless times here before. Even Phil had to step in a few times.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Thursday, June 27, 2013 - 3:15 am:

Maaaaaaaaybe. If you don't see any posts by who you're thinking of then the ban probably worked.

By Benn (Benn) on Thursday, June 27, 2013 - 6:36 am:

If it's who I'm thinking of, he hasn't posted anywhere on Nitcent since the 19th. (Yes, I've checked.)

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Thursday, June 27, 2013 - 7:02 am:

Actually, if it is who I think it is, this persons last post was an insult, directed at Keith. This post was subsequently deleted.

This person has been rude to other posters. This person has been rude and insulting to the Moderators here. This person has been obnoxious and abusive, yet whenever someone calls this person out, said person adopts a "Wahhhhhhh! Nobody likes me!" attitude. This person has been banned from several forums here in the past.

Phil himself has had to step in and delete many of this person's posts.

This person seems to have burned their last bridge here. Nitcentral will not be a poorer place with this person gone.

By Benn (Benn) on Thursday, June 27, 2013 - 7:17 am:

We've got the same person in mind, Tim. At one point, I made the mistake of facebooking him. I eventually deleted him. No regrets there.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Thursday, June 27, 2013 - 9:47 am:

He tried to FB me. I didn't accept.

And now that we've finished the "we all know who it is" section, we now return you to your regularly scheduled Nitpicking.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Friday, June 28, 2013 - 5:05 am:

Secretly? No, it's pretty darn arrogant about it!

And really it won't work unless it can get more speed out of the dune buggies.

---

What I did would only affect my boards, so I can't claim any credit for him not posting on other boards at NitC.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 - 4:30 am:

Apologies if this is in the wrong place, but I've noticed a couple strange things with the site lately. Occasionally, my posts don't show up when I click the Last Day or Last Week links. Also, today for example, when I go to Last Week I see the last 10+ days.

Neither of these are troublesome per se, I just thought I'd point them out in the off chance they're symptoms of a larger issue (or that I've missed some changes and didn't read about them). Thank you

By Natalie Salat (Nataliesalat) on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 - 5:17 pm:

Turnabout Intruder is legitimate as it's mentioned earlier in that thread that Kirk would find his centre of gravity etc thrown off when waking in a female body.

The I Dream of Jeannie post is tongue in cheek/a joke.

The Fonz post is also a joke as i hate Happy Days.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 - 8:53 pm:

Francois, she may not be a troll per se, but her little obsession with sex changes does verge on being troll-like.

And Judi, if a word you use comes up censored, you should probably consider that a sign you have stepped over a line and should rethink your post.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Thursday, August 15, 2019 - 5:11 am:

As Natalie has apparently blocked me from posting on her Red Dwarf boards I'll respond here to Kevin and Tim's argument...

I actually think autism is something Natalie has NEVER said she said (although there are quite a few she DID say she had).

She (and for that matter, Tim) has never been anywhere near as abusive as Andre. The few posts left of his around here are by no means the worst of his vitriol.

If the comparison to previous posters must be made, then Natalie reminds me of a fellow called Sherman (can't remember his alias names at the minute) who always had a new tale of woe everytime he logged on. I think one time Luigi decided to deconstruct one of his lies piece by piece just to prove he was a compulsive liar. He would frequently ask moderators to proofread his posts or delete ones that called him on his bull excrement.
He was never banned but he just moved on.

By Judi Jeffreys (Rubyandgarnet) on Thursday, August 15, 2019 - 7:20 am:

By ScottN (Scottn) on Wednesday, December 09, 2020 - 10:02 am:

Are there any Roving mods? I'm echoing Rodney's sentiment.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Wednesday, December 09, 2020 - 1:56 pm:

What exactly is he doing that violates the Chief's rules?

Yes, I wish Jeff would write more in-depth thoughts and less links, but I don't believe that violates any rules.

If you use the Last Day view you can see who made a post and just not click the link if you don't like the poster.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Wednesday, December 09, 2020 - 5:14 pm:

If he only did a couple then I would agree but starting a board and posting a link a number of times just adds to the amount of data we will need to ship over. To me, this feels very much like spamming a site.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Thursday, December 10, 2020 - 5:17 am:

I knew he was trouble from the get go. From his first post, red flags went up for me.

In the year-and-a-half since, nothing has convinced me otherwise.

By Judi Jeffreys, Granada in NorthWest (Jjeffreys_mod) on Thursday, December 10, 2020 - 3:25 pm:

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Friday, December 11, 2020 - 5:17 am:

Wish Jeff would take the hint and leave.

He's like a pushy door-to-door salesman that keeps ringing the doorbell of the same house.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Friday, January 15, 2021 - 5:52 am:

The date for this section indicates that something was posted, but I can't find anything. In fact, I can't find any thread that gives yesterday's date.

I'm guessing our resident pest, Jeff Winters, made another one of his pointless threads.

Why won't he go away?

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Friday, January 15, 2021 - 9:03 pm:

Has anyone ever told you how annoying your constant need to know every little thing a moderator has done in their section is?

And no, Jeff didn't do anything.

Another poster who is on the verge of being permanently banned created a thread I felt was an attack on another poster.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, January 16, 2021 - 5:18 am:

I now know what happened and why it happened.

If you wish to discuss this further, I'll be happy to do so in the Moderator section.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Saturday, April 17, 2021 - 4:51 pm:

Hey if a roving mod is around can you please remove Natalie's disgusting slur against me from the legal musings board and move it to the garbage dump?

Thank you

By Natalie RD QL (Rdnat) on Saturday, April 17, 2021 - 4:56 pm:

You made a dig at me in the Doctor Who Cemetery section. I felt the need to fight back.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Saturday, April 17, 2021 - 5:25 pm:

Did I? Kate made an off colour joke and I remarked that she was channeling you. Where was I wrong? To be honest, I wouldn't have been surprised if you'd posted it yourself and used her name.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Sunday, April 18, 2021 - 5:12 am:

Natalie, I read Rodney's "dig at you" and it did not rate the response you gave him in the Beaumont Children thread. If you took offense at his comment, and you clearly did, they you should have requested an apology, or asked Emily to remove the post in question (since you have her e-mail addy).

However, your comment that he wants to be in a relationship with a child, who was most likely murdered, is, IMO, very poor taste.

Remember, Arnna Beaumont was a real person, a young child who's life was probably taken from her at a very young age. Making jokes about her like that is, once again, in very poor taste.

Natalie, you were doing so well here, but you seem to be backsliding into your old habits I'd thought you'd abandoned. Remember what happened as a result of your last transgression. Not only did you end up banned from yet another forum (Movies), but it also cost you your position on the Moderating staff here.

And remember what Phil said in his post, that your
name had come up "too many times". That means you are definitionally on his radar. One or two more such transgressions, and he might decide to ban you from the entire site. I'm sure you don't want that to happen, considering how upset you are that you can't post in Doctor Who anymore.

Natalie, once again I ask, please think before you post. Surely you can find a way to rebut a statement from Rodney, or anyone else, without sinking into such poor tasteful posts like the one that started this incident.

By JD (Jdominguez) on Sunday, April 18, 2021 - 8:59 pm:

Natalie cares very little whether she's banned from here, as she's on a significant number of forums under an equally large amount of aliases, and given past patterns she will continue to abuse her hospitality here until she's finally banned. Honestly, why not just move to Twitter? They're even more forgiving than here.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Friday, April 23, 2021 - 3:56 pm:

Rodney, the post has been taken care of.

Tim McCree, new Roving Mod, at your service!

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Saturday, April 24, 2021 - 3:34 pm:

Thanks

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Sunday, April 25, 2021 - 5:13 am:

No problem.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Monday, June 28, 2021 - 9:15 pm:

Hey Tim, if I may ask, what was the reason you shut down discussion in the legal musings page?

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Monday, June 28, 2021 - 10:42 pm:

I read over the thread in question, after Natalie revived it, and saw potential trouble. I decided to get ahead of the problem.

Note that it's only that one particular thread, the rest of the forum is unaffected.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 - 2:01 am:

Why does everyone keep ignoring the "Kitchen Sink" part of this thread title and treat it like a thread for generic mods?

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 - 5:07 am:

Sorry KAM.

Perhaps you should start a thread called "Hey Moderator" and move all non-Kitchen Sink related posts into that one.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 - 3:28 pm:

Well KAM maybe tell us where the other one is or put an announcement on the front page?

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 - 4:50 pm:

Some mods have threads in their own areas so people can contact them on those.

ClassicTrek has Ask The Moderator

NextGen has Poke The Moderator With A Stick

Doctor Who has Calling The Moderator

True, not every mod has such a thread, but they should.

I see a post in this thread in the Last Day view I think someone is trying contact me. It's like using the Batsignal to contact Superman. ;-)

By Natalie RD QL (Rdnat) on Saturday, July 03, 2021 - 8:53 am:

Tim: Keith, I really think I should try to lighten your load.

KAM: No-NNNNNNO-No!.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 - 5:26 am:

KAM, your forums (this one and Comic Books) are no longer restricted to members only. Better fix this, fast!

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 - 5:43 pm:

That's funny. I only added an IP address to block and the other restrictions are still checked especially Registered Users.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 - 5:50 pm:

You would think the IP block would be added to the whole, not subverting the whole.

Apparently fixed.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 - 5:12 am:

Yep, back to normal now.

By Paul A (Paul_a) on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 - 10:48 am:

Thank you, good sir,
Paul

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 - 2:52 pm:

Well Paul, I’m not KAM but I see no reason why we should acquiesce to any request by you.
You’ve lied to us for over 10 years and were it not for one member digging deep you would have happily continued with the ruse. Had we more members here you might have flown under the radar a bit more but you simply couldn’t. As it’s Phil’s site we can only leave it to his discretion if he bans you outright.

By JD (Jdominguez) on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 - 3:21 pm:

Oh for god's sake.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 - 4:27 pm:

I think Tim needs to erase everything from this troll on the Star Trek threads, as well.
I can't believe I stuck up for this guy at one time, because I thought Tim was being too harsh to him/her/it.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 - 6:43 pm:

We all did Steve. But I think Tim is probably as angry at himself as we are at Paul.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 - 11:11 pm:

Some of his/her posts are part of conversations so deleting everything would make a hash of some threads.

Also being asked to erase all their posts makes me think of a burglar asking a homeowner to erase all trace of said burglar having been in the house.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Thursday, September 16, 2021 - 5:20 am:

straight I'm angry. I considered "Natalie" a friend, but that friendship, like everything else, was based on a lie.

I agree with KAM, the posts stay. We may need them as evidence.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Friday, September 17, 2021 - 11:33 am:

Evidence for what? That a pervert was on this site?
Better to get rid of the idiotic ones that had nothing to do about the topic at hand, than to allow him/her/it to look back at 'the good old days' when he/she/it was trolling us.
But, you guys are the Moderators.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Friday, September 17, 2021 - 9:22 pm:

In case Paul inhabits someplace else and, like us, nobody twigs on for a while. Maybe we can serve as a bit of a warning.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, September 18, 2021 - 5:23 am:

Yeah, he fooled us all for the better part of a decade.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Saturday, September 18, 2021 - 5:34 pm:

Nope. For more than a decade. I believe he came here first in 2008.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Monday, September 20, 2021 - 5:16 am:

At least now the truth is out.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Sunday, February 05, 2023 - 7:00 pm:

I can't remember where it was posted (though not this particular board), but not too, too long ago, the moderators removed the 'start new discussion' button for movies.

I don't need to say it, right? You know what I'm implying, yeah?

The more one-or-two-post threads we have, the more the aging software has to deal with, and it's already crumbling.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Monday, February 06, 2023 - 5:20 am:

You can blame our resident pest, Jeff Winters, for that, Kevin. He making new "discussions" in the movie forum which consisted little more than "what do we think of" or "I heard that", in short his usual shtick. In fact, it was unlikely that he had ever even seen the movie in question, rather it was just another one of his pathetic (and irritating) calls for attention.

So a decision was made to remove the 'start new discussion' buttons in the movies section to stop this.

A for restoring it, that would be JD's call to make. He's the Mod for the movies forum.

By JD (Jdominguez) on Sunday, February 12, 2023 - 2:41 pm:

Sorry for the late response Tim and Kevin, let me look into options for movies here, I wouldn't mind restoring new discussion access if it won't be a Jeff mess.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Saturday, October 28, 2023 - 8:11 pm:

Bugger me, finding anything around here is hard. Trying to post about Matthew Perry’s death and do you think I can find the correct Cemetary thread here????

I guess the Friends moderator should probably create such a thread over there, assuming one doesn't already exist.

Oddly enough one of my news feeds had a story about Brittany Spears appearing nude on a beach, next to the story of Perry drowning. Not connected, obviously, but unintentionally humorous.

If the Friends board had the kind of activity that Trek and Who did, then I would. Setting up a board for one person seems redundant.

Good point.

Well, the show did have a bunch of guest stars and supporting players, besides the main six, some of whom may have passed away before Perry.

But if you don't want to do it, that's fine. It was just an idea.

KAM- we have a board (as difficult as it is to find) for general celebrity and/or movie & TV star deaths. They can be put there. As I said, the traffic on the Friends board is non-existant and not therefore not worth the effort to add more boards to an already cluttered board.
