My favourite video about Facebook

It's a YouTube video by somegreybloke, one of the funniest guys on the site, IMO. I think the video is fairly safe for all ages although, as it says itself, it may not be suitable for devout Muslims.

By AMR on Wednesday, April 07, 2010 - 5:32 pm:

Well, in order to spread forth good will towards my fellow man, I have sent friend requests to many of you on FB, including Phil himself. I had no idea he was even using that site!

I have been for a while. I am now doing the game "FarmVille" that some introduced me to.

Interesting to see what you guys look like! I wonder if I'm like how you guys may have pictured me!

Anyway, I apologize for my past disgressions. I harbor no ill will towards anyone here, and I hope that we can continue to ciexist peacefully.

Later now.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 - 11:49 pm:

Um, KAM....Don't you think you get Facebook invitations *because* you don't have an account? People don't invite you to their party if you're already there.

By Chris Booton (Cbooton) on Thursday, November 11, 2010 - 12:20 am:

But these are people that I don't know. Why would I get a Facebook invite from someone I don't know?

By Kevin (Kevin) on Thursday, November 11, 2010 - 1:23 am:

They want you to be part of their Mafia Wars gang, or some other game. Those things have really ruined FB and really screw up the friends recommendation function.

Though often I get them because I do a lot of public speaking, and they're from people who sat in the audience. Once in a blue moon, they'll attach a note explaining that, but most of them assume that if they saw me and know my name that I saw them and know who they are as well.

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Thursday, November 11, 2010 - 8:41 pm:

You can add me as a friend, Chris. I don't play those FACEBOOK games.

By Chris Booton (Cbooton) on Thursday, November 11, 2010 - 11:56 pm:

I don't even have a Facebook account. That's what makes the invites (I get them via e-mail) so odd.

We know.... you've told us 5 times already.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Sunday, November 14, 2010 - 7:50 pm:

I don't even have a Facebook account. That's what makes the invites (I get them via e-mail) so odd.

Seriously, why does everybody find this odd? It's the fact that you don't have an account that's why you get invited. If you were on Facebook, you'd hardly be getting invitations to join.

It's when a friend of yours (or a contact at least) joins and allows FB to access their email address book, or when a friend specifically wants you to join.

By Chris Booton (Cbooton) on Sunday, November 14, 2010 - 9:59 pm:

But what about when it's from people you've never heard of and from their location and age, there's little to no chance you'd know them in real life?

By Kevin (Kevin) on Sunday, November 14, 2010 - 10:53 pm:

Yeah, I got a few of those. They came from people who were CCed in the same e-mail I once received. It might be other applicants for a position you once applied for, a co-worker's cousin, etc. They join FB, allow it access to their address book, and you get it.

It is annoying. Search your email. They might come up.

If not, then I don't know. Maybe from someone who bought a spam list? or someone who didn't delete a spam message you received as well but have long since deleted?

By ? on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 - 12:47 pm:

Nove, did you get a look at Treknation yet?

It was the early 2000s as near as I can
recall it.If it was deleted at that time...

By Nove Rockhoomer (Noverockhoomer) on Sunday, November 28, 2010 - 10:57 pm:

I looked at Treknation, but couldn't find that discussion. If you could tell me your username, I could look for that, but if you were banned, your posts may have been deleted anyway. Also, the posts don't seem to go back very far, so it's probably gone.

By KAM on Monday, November 29, 2010 - 4:23 am:

Kevin - KAM....Don't you think you get Facebook invitations *because* you don't have an account?
True.

I guess it's just an old High School reaction. Back then the school bullies realized that if they acted like your enemy & said what they were going to do to you even the dumbest teacher might realize they were up to no good, whereas if they loudly called you a "friend, buddy, old pal" the dim-witted clods (teachers) would look the other way while they got close enough to punch you in the kidney and/or knee you in the groin. So when people I don't know, or don't know that well, start inviting me to be their friends I run like hell the other way.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 - 8:39 pm:

Why should a mod have to bow to your every whim Sherman? You post something up there in it is pretty much at the discretion of the mod whether they choose to erase it or not and as a rule unless they violate nit-central rules then it won't be done.

As Scott said, if you want your posts deleted then don't post them at all.

By ScottN on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 - 9:33 pm:

And all 51 of those spams are dictionary attacks, not scraping from here.

Or else the spambots are scraping Facebook, but the odds of them getting it from here are slim.

By AMR on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 - 3:37 pm:

I'm still around. I just don't feel like responding to your every attempt to have people pay attention to you. You know what I'm saying?

Also, even though Rodney is no longer speaking to me (for other unrelated reasons) he is absolutely right about how the NitCentral Mods don't have to do what you want them to do. They are not here to cater to your whims, or anybody else's!

Sorry to be blunt, but that's the way it is.

Happy Holidays.

By AMR on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 - 3:38 pm:

Why am I not speaking to you?

By AMR on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 - 6:40 pm:

Rodney, I have nothing against you. I merely thought you were no longer communicating with me because I spoke disparagingly of the sport Cricket sometime earlier this year. I believe you were somewhat offended that I would say that nobody in America cared about it, and that in the rest of the world, it was a "dying sport".

Also, I looked back through some of my earlier posts and you seemed to dislike me because I was ranting about various Trek-related topics that you did not agree with, but specificially because of my "spouting off" against John Lang about his fascination (that's putting it mildly) with Marina Sirtis.

And finally, it appeared that you un-friended me from Facebook sometime this year, before I deleted my account.

If I am somehow mistaken, please let me know.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 - 7:56 pm:

I was disliking you when you were behaving like a rude jerk to Benn, Todd et al on Music. And yes, you were rather mean to John as well but you seemed to calm down and start behaving yourself- all of that happened before I friended you on FB- I never defriended you.

By AMR on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 - 8:24 pm:

I see. Are we cool now, then, or what?

By Laforge the Useless on Thursday, December 16, 2010 - 12:28 am:

Rodney and Amr are like 2 school bullies

By The Kitchen Sink Moderator on Thursday, December 16, 2010 - 3:50 am:

Yeah, it's very annoying to be constantly bugged by someone who makes posts then later wants them removed, or wants posts by people who responded negatively to their posts, or some combination of the above.

If I feel the posts did not violate the standards of NitC (cursing, attacks, etc.), then I generally don't delete posts.

There are exceptions, but it depends on a combination of time, mood & whim.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Thursday, December 16, 2010 - 4:01 am:

a stupid robber put his picture on Facebook.
The cops v ery happy to see his mug shot there.
He even stole the laptop in the guy's home!

By AMR on Thursday, December 16, 2010 - 1:03 pm:

If it's any consolation, I was bullied too, in both middle and high school. Having Asperger's Syndrome, I was a little bit odd and unconventional in certain areas, that could be why. Luckily, it was mostly the verbal type of bullying, it wasn't as if other kids were trying to beat me up all the time. One guy once threatened to, but he never did. Eventually, I stood up for myself to somebody who was harassing me, and he did not bother me again. And no, I did not beat *him* up!

Anyway, you are right Laforge, that WAS a stupid criminal! They are a dime a dozen in this world, that's for sure!

By ScottN on Thursday, December 16, 2010 - 1:21 pm:

And I told you, drop AOL and switch to a provider that has better spam filters.

Gmail comes to mind.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Thursday, December 16, 2010 - 2:04 pm:

Ok- so LaForge is yet another name... I must start keeping track.

In regards to bullying I really don't think you know what bullying really is. I've experienced it both as a child and as an adult. I just choose not to moan and whinge about it on here. But once again your story doesn't make sense...

So you got suspended because you were bullied? The bully wanted you arrested? It. Makes. No. Sense!!

Seriously Sherman, how do you expect us to sympathize with you when you come up with these ridiculous stories?

By AMR on Thursday, December 16, 2010 - 2:51 pm:

Rodney, I wholeheartedly concur.

I thank my lucky stars that I had it relatively easy in school (early to mid '90's) compared to some of the horror stories I read about in People magazine or see on shows like 20/20. What I went through (the verbal taunts and occasional threats of violence being done to me) is nothing compared to the massive wave of bullying and harassment some of today teenagers have been subjected to.

I really think it is sad, and I wish it would stop for good. So in a way, I sympathize with you Laforge, but in another way, I wish you would just stop whining about the past and move on with your life.

Is any of what I am saying making any sense to you? I hope it does!

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Thursday, December 16, 2010 - 4:13 pm:

I didn't get it easy in school until I did what all victims of bullying should do- I spoke out. I named and shamed the people. They were dragged in front of the principal alongside their parents and told that if they so much as sneezed in the wrong way they would be expelled. I didn't care if I got shunned by the students because I was already pretty much shunned.

I, like Andre, wish it could be stamped out for good but these days of Facebook, MySpace, texting make it that much easier for bullies to do their thing undetected...

Oh and Andre- yes we are cool :-)

By AMR on Thursday, December 16, 2010 - 4:46 pm:

Thanks, Rodney.

By Brian FitzGerald (Brifitz1980) on Thursday, December 16, 2010 - 11:48 pm:

So you got suspended because you were bullied? The bully wanted you arrested? It. Makes. No. Sense!!

I don't know about an arrest, but suspension was fairly common where I went to school.

My schools were more worried about fighting than bullying. So even if you were defending yourself from someone who came up to you and started throwing punches or whatever it was generally treated as fighting where both kids got punished.

During middle school I twice ended up getting ISS (In School Suspension) for cases where more assertive kids picked on me and after they laid hands on me I responded in kind.

By Callie (Csullivan) on Friday, December 17, 2010 - 6:38 am:

Rodney, if you ever again say to Sherman "Would you care to explain that one a little further?" even in jest, you'll find out from the rest of us what bullying really is! Never encourage him!!

;)

By ScottN on Friday, December 17, 2010 - 2:43 pm:

By Callie on Saturday, December 18, 2010 - 8:14 am:

ScottN - worship's the last thing I need from him!

Oh yes, we were talking about Facebook, weren't we? I have an account but not under my real name (so Sherman can't find me ... snigger). I don't use it all that often and when I do, it's only to watch the postings of a friend of mine, but generally I've not found FB all that interesting. It may be because I haven't investigated its possibilities in enough detail, but I also have an account on LiveJournal (again under the alternate name) and I have to say that, to me, that's a more user-friendly system with better communities/groups.

By Callie on Sunday, December 19, 2010 - 7:45 am:

Callie I may even know your password..(not yet).

If I choose to take this as a threat, Sherman, and report it as such to the Chief, you could find yourself banned from this site and even reported to your isp. I do not find this kind of talk amusing. If that's how you behave in the real world, it's no wonder you get the abuse that you do from people.

However, my Nitcentral email address is public knowledge and it'll take more than a moron like you to make me change it.

By AMR on Sunday, December 19, 2010 - 12:29 pm:

Facebook debuts today as a public company; the stock IPO (which will be traded on NASDAQ) was set at $38 last night. The hype from the news media is so overwhelming and deafening, I hope it tanks big time, and closes today at 38 cents. And, I hope our pension fund trustees wait a while before buying the stock. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg met with potential investors last week, wearing his usual hoodie. For crying out loud, didn't he have the decency to wear a suit and tie? Then again, the investors were there to kiss his tush anyway.
I don't belong to any social network sites - no Facebook, no Twitter, no Pinterest, no MySpace (whatever happened to that?), no B-Frendz (Law & Order's mock MySpace. ) And, I never will.

Also, consider this. If you're not paying for it, you're not the customer, you're the product.

Excellent point. One that could apply to so many other things. Something I think we should at least sometimes think about when using any number of products.

Even if people do pay for it, let's be honest with ourselves, what is the loss of one customer going to cost the company? Yes, it can be a big loss for the customer. But, the company, who doesn't know the person may just see a customer as a number.

It also might not be that they don't care. Maybe there's just so many customers that the company isn't able to help on an individual level. I.e., they're so big, so many come and go every day and there's so much to do that they don't have the time to help one person.

Jeff, if you have a spare 90 minutes I suggest you watch this documentary to see how little these companies care about you.

Even if you luck into a human at tech support, it's mostly likely they have to read off a script that they're not allowed to deviate from.

I heard the news that Facebook is changing it's name to Meta ,
I don't like it, I don't think anyone likes it

I'm fairly certain Zuckerberg likes it.

I look at Zuckerberg's face and think, "Maybe the Reptilian Conspiracy Theorists have a point?"

There have been times I've gotten suspensions because Facebook took something I said out of context.

God help you if you use words such as "Isis" there. The word existed long before the terrorist organization, such as the Egyptian deity or the 1970's Saturday morning show. However you say the word, in regards to said deity or show, and Facebook thinks you're advocating terrorism.

The last time I got such a suspension, I contacted the Group Admin of the Star Trek page that I'm part of and asked her to contact the higher ups to appeal my suspension. She told me that there is no one to appeal to, it's all computer algorithms.

So you have to watch what you say.

Why did Facebook get rid of
the "Poke" feature, where you could poke
friends and they poke back.
Also ever notice how around 2012
Facebook had the category for
Inspirational People, a person could
Post About people that inspire them

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Tuesday, September 05, 2023 - 11:52 am:

Apparently they removed the poke feature because it reminded Zuckerberg of some losers he knew in school but hoped he meet in heaven….

LOL!

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Friday, April 26, 2024 - 4:43 pm:
