The Long, Twilight Struggle

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Babylon 5: Season 2 - The Coming Of Shadows (2259): The Long, Twilight Struggle
By Brian Webber (Bwebber) on Friday, October 30, 1998 - 1:22 pm:

Draal is just so cool.

The Great Machine got a new paint job.

Those mass drivers are pretty scary. But slow. No wonder the bombardment took FOUR DAYS! The Centauri are all show.

I love this episode. It possible had less happening than Coming Of Shadows. Instead of War breaking out, G'kar buying Londo a drink, the assasination of the Centauri Prime Minister and death of the emperor, Londo's dream, and Sinclair
(pauses for breath)
we just get Draal, end of the war, bombing of Narn homeworld, G'Kar being stripped of his Ambassador status, Londo deceiding that he's had enough of the Shadows, and the introduction of Sheridan into the rangers.

And neith of these episodes are end-of-seasons or start-of-seasons, which is why I love this show.

I must nominate not a Great line, but great acting. Londo looking at the bombing shows what a superb actor Peter Jurrasik is. Without words, he convays about 50 emotions at once using just his face.
And G'Kar in the council scene at the end. I understand why Delenn cried. (not that its hard to make her cry, but...)

I thought this epsiode had a great half and a very weak second half... The Centaury/Barn stuff was great - the Great Machine was lousy.

Why would you give local command on the Rangers to Sheridan? And what makes him the leader of the war against the shadows anyway?

By Annonymous no1 on Thursday, January 28, 1999 - 7:47 am:

Narn

By Adam Howarter on Thursday, January 28, 1999 - 6:38 pm:

Why give command of the Ranger's to Sheridan? Were you not listening to what Jason said?
The real question is if the Shadow's wanted anarchy why didn't they just destroy Babylon 5? Delenn and all would be dead, any chance of the younger races uniting dead with them. Let alone uniting against the Shadows.

By Annonymous no 1 on Friday, January 29, 1999 - 6:20 am:

What did Jason say?

By Adam Howarter on Sunday, January 31, 1999 - 1:20 am:

That Sheridan, Delenn, Ivonava, and Garibaldi, are "nexuses." That they're natural born leaders. Thats why the Vorlon's wanted him in command. It also begs the question that if the Shadow's wanted chaos, anarchy, fighting; why didn't they kill the people they knew had the ability to unite everyone? Gee, the Shadow's don't seem to be vary good at their self imposed role do they.

By Liam Kavanagh on Friday, February 05, 1999 - 5:06 pm:

By Z'Ha'Dum (the ep), they'd seemed to have picked up on this.

They drew Sheridan to Z'Ha'Dum, to either turn him, or kill him. They captured Garibaldi, and planned to use him against the others if neccessary.

Of course, you could ask why they never used Garibaldi. And what exactly did the Shadows do to him? We know what Bester did, but the shadows?

You could also buy the excuse 'they left the station alone, on the assumption that it could be used for their purposes', which I don't buy.

I'd just say that the Shadows were too arrogant to consider the possibility until Sheridan had bloodied their noses.

Here is a nit for you:

Sheridan when given command of the Rangers He says "I dont know what to say" Yes He does His good luck speech.

By Omer on Monday, June 28, 1999 - 6:11 am:

I hate hoe Sheridan can always preach. BTW, ever noticed that in B5, if you're wrong you're quiet, and if you're right you speak? It's very evident in this episode when G'kar makes his great "I'm leaving this place" speech, and Londo shuts up. Londo? shuts up?

By Douglas Nicol on Saturday, July 15, 2000 - 3:23 pm:

G'Kars speech was great, and the way he managed to exit the council chamber with so much dignity turned Londo's 'victory' around.

I haven't gotten a chance to see this episode, but I recently got the Season 2 Episode Guide. Concerning the photo they have of Draal in the Great Machine, said Great Machine looked kind of fake. Did it look this way in the episode, or is that just the photo?

By Richie Vest on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 5:46 pm:

Here is a nit for you:

Gardibldi says has know about the Rangers for 8 or 9 months. However he learned about them in the same episode in which the Narn-Centauri War started which Londo says started only 6 months eariler?

Nit

I always thought that the Rangers were under the direct control of Sinclair (the One), so why does Delenn say that they have been under her direct control.

By Cyber (Cybermortis) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 7:22 pm:

Delen could mean one of two things;

She is the local commander of the Rangers who are based on or who pass through B5. As she is closer to the front than Sinclair she would be better placed to control them.

Sinclair, as Ranger one, isn't the commander in chief. Sinclair has been on Minbar for around a year and a half at this point. It would be a little strange if he managed to complete his Ranger training to the point where he could then take over in this time...of course this leads to the question;

Who was leading the Rangers between the Earth-Minbari war (when the head of the rangers was killed) and now? By my rough maths there would be some 15 years between the two dates. The only person I can think of who would be qualified would be...Delen.

By Torque, Son of Keplar (Klingon) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 9:07 pm:

A later episode (the one where Marcus is introduced) clarifies that Delenn is in charge of the rangers in that region.
