What happened to San Diego that there would be a place called San Diego Wastes? I know the city was nuked, but I'd think that over time, the radiation would subside and the place would be resettled. Afterall, Hiroshima isn't still some city of rubble.

IIRC the nuke used on Hiroshima was a mere ten kilotons. I imagine that San Diego got hit with a multi-megaton device.
