What happened to Lise's baby? In this episode she told Michael that she was married and expecting a baby - was mention ever made of the baby when she next met Michael?

Callie: Her husband cheated on her, then filed for divorce. Becuase she was Mars born, he automatically got custody, becuase the judges were all Earth appointed. Then she met that Edgars guy.

Just caught the Sci-Fi channel re-run, and I noticed a couple of nits.

How did Captain Pierce know about the technology they found on Epsilon 3? He claimed that Earthforce sent him and that he was monitoring the reports, but there are a couple of problems with that. Sinclair and Ivanova were the first ones to see the tech, and prior to that, all they knew was that something was shooting at them. Why would C & C send a report to Earthforce before there was complete information, especially given the short duration of Sinclair and Ivanova's trip. And why would Earthforce send a heavy cruiser out into neutral space, especially when there are problems on Mars? Wouldn't they be more concerned with solidfying their borders in case any hostile races tried to take advantage?

Everyone in this ep, including Varn, refer to the machine inside Epsilon 3 simply as "The Machine." How does it change to "The Great Machine" by the next time we see Draal in "The Long Twilight Struggle"?

A couple more that I forgot.

While talking with Captain Pierce, Sinclair threatens to blockade Epsilon 3. He tells Ivanova to ready a couple of squadrons. He then says one or two sentences to Captain Pierce and tells Ivanova to launch the squadrons. She hasn't moved, nor said a word. Somehow, the squadrons still launch. Even if we forgo Ivanova's silent orders, there is little to no time for the squadrons to ready. Even if they were waiting in the locker room in full flight gear, I can't imagine that a fighter squadron could launch in less than five - ten minutes.

When the alien ships starts firing, one of the shots hits the side of the leading sphere, almost directly between two of the three support struts. Cut to C&C where Ivanova says that there is some damage to the Cobra Bays. The problem with that is that the Cobra Bays are actually on those support struts, nowhere near the impact zone of the shot.

Dustin, it's been shown that scquadron's have sometimes been sitting in their Furies waiting for the launch signal when needed. I think Signs and Portents had it when the raiders appeared again. Maybe Ivanova or Sinclair had done this.

Sinclair and Pierce exchange some heated words in the beginning of this episode, and at the end of the scene, Sinclair dismisses Pierce. Sinclair is a Commander, and Pierce a Captain. Does Commander outrank Captain in the B5 universe? Or is "Commander" simple Sinclair's title as head of the station? If so, what's his rank? How does the chain of command work in the B5verse?

By Cyber (Cybermortis) on Saturday, February 07, 2009 - 6:33 pm:

Commander in the B5 universe is below that of Captain. However Sinclar is the commanding officer of the station and military governor. As such he would be perfectly entitled to dismiss a Captain from his own office on the station.

Of course Pierce may not hold the rank of full Captain in the first place. While it is a rank Captain is also the title of anyone in command of a ship regardless of their rank. (Pierce's ship is a rather small one for Earthforce, and may be commanded by a Commander rather than a full Captain).

By Brian FitzGerald (Brifitz1980) on Saturday, February 07, 2009 - 10:05 pm:

Cyber, you stole my point. Pierce may be a Captain by rank or he may not be. In the present Navy if a Lt jg or an Ensign were in command of a vessel, of any size, he would still be addressed as Captain.

In the present Navy if a Lt jg or an Ensign were in command of a vessel, of any size, he would still be addressed as Captain.

This practice is centuries old at least. A lieutenant in the Royal navy circa 1700 would be called 'Captain' if he was given command of a ship (This would be a Brig or a Sloop). Officers with the old rank of Master and Commander (shortened to Commander in the early 1800's) were addressed as 'Captain' as a courtesy even if they did not have a Command. (Commanders did not act as first officers, but commanded small ships on their own). This practice goes back to at least the 1400's, if not long before this date, even when there were was no rank structure or standing navies.

The rank structure in Earth Force is confusing, since it uses both Navy and Army ranks. We do know that ranks go; lieutenant (presumably with both JG and full lieutenants), Lt Commander(Ivanova), Commander (Sinclar), Captain (Sheridan). We know that Earthforce does not use the rank of Admiral, instead using General. However ranks below Lt and between General and Captain get confusing.

We know that both Major and Colonel are ranks in Earthforce. However Major is equal to the rank of Lt Commander - and seems to be considered as such in the B5 universe as the Major in question addresses Sheridan (a Captain) as 'Sir' indicating Sheridan is the senior officer.
While Colonel is the army equivalent of a Captain. This, again, seems to be confirmed on the show by Sinclar (A Commander) addressing a Colonel as 'sir'.
The explanation sometimes given for this is that Earthforce has both ground forces and a navy. Officers join one of the two and while they can switch between the two services they will continue to use the rank structure from which service they originally joined - eg someone who starts in the Marine core and who later goes on to command a ship would hold the Rank of Colonel.
This explanation, however, is none cannocal to the best of my knowledge and was invented for the Babylon 5 RPG.
