Babylon 5 RPG

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Babylon 5: The Zocalo (aka the Kitchen Sink): Babylon 5 RPG

There's a new Babylon 5 Tabletop Roleplaying game using Wizard of the Coasts AD&D 3rd Edition rules. It's a lot better presented than the old Chameleon Ecletic game.

Printed by Mongoose Publishing.

Another setting using D20? I must say I'm disappointed.

It's been heavily modified by Mongoose. For instance, characters can't take multiple PPG hits and just shrug it off. The presentation is VERY well done. It's also going to be well supported.

I actually liked the CE version of B5. For the most part.

Unfortunately the CE version had some pretty poor presentation and errors like the Earthforce Sourcebook. Maybe if CE had released more material it would have done better.

I'm just trying to imagine with the new game, tying together B5, SG-1 and Farscape. :)

Now that would be quite the crossover. I agrtee there was quite a few mistakes in the books as well as some passges that could have gone through the editing a bit longer but the mechanics of the game (if you didnt mind taking close to an hour to make a character) did ok. They reminded me of the west end games system.

Well the new game has definitely tightened up the D20 system. As the designers more or less put it, you didn't see major characters like Sheridan or Garibaldi taking a direct hit with a PPG and shruggin it off as a flesh wound. (No Monty Python & the Holy Grail jokes please :) ), they want people to think their way through a problem rather than kill anything that moves.

The CE game had promise but also was a victim of poor timing in as the RPG market was really being hit hard by the CCG cames that came out. While the CCG's still exist, the market for them has stabilised and the RPG games seem to be enjoying a new upswing.

So far, the release schedule for the new RPG has been pretty good, the Fiery Trial covering the end of Season 1, and The Coming of Shadows covering the events of Season 2 have both come out pretty quickly.

The quality of presentation is very nice, but my only complaint is that as with a lot of RPG products nowadays the price has went up a lot, I guess you get what you pay for though.

The releases for the game have been pretty quick, especially compared to the slow scheduling of the old Babylon Project game.

Out now is

The Fiery Trial
Coming of Shadows
Earth Alliance Fact Book.
