I would like to take this small opportunity to wish Mike and all the posters on the "Doctor Who" section of the board a very happy and prosperous 2003.
I always enjoy reading the discussions about all things Who. What pleases me most is the fact that we rarely have flame wars or nasty stuff that has permeated several of the discussion boards on this site.
I look forward to contributing more, and reading the words of wisdom from everyone here for at least another year!
CHEERS!
Well, thanks Rodney! I'm glad you're happy.
Happy New Years everyone.
Well thank you. And while I appreciate the sentiment, well you know, what's a New Year to a Timelord? I've seen so many, on so many different planets. Seems like everywhere I go it's a new year, or about to be.
Sorry people, but I felt like having a bit of a rant and I suppose this is as good a place to have it as any...
Has everyone seen how the Fortieth Anniversary is going to be celebrated? Now, opinions may differ on the best way to celebrate forty glorious years (well, 26 glorious years and 14, ah, quiet ones). Personally, I'd suggest a 25-minute episode of new Who every single week of the year, plus a trilogy of Lord of the Rings-scale movies, with at least 20 new novels, none of them PDAs and all of them part of a Lawrence Miles-created story arc. The scouring of the globe to uncover even a few more precious minutes of lost Who. Dozens of new DVDs, sold at cost price. Oh, and a few audios, why not, providing they're removed from the control of Gary Russell. In fact, perhaps the execution of Gary Russell (plus a few other authors I could mention) should form the centrepiece of a nation-wide celebration on a Who Bank Holiday...no, I'm getting a bit carried away here. But whatever your opinions on marking the momentous occasion, surely no-one, NO-ONE in their right mind, would ever even THINK, in their WILDEST DREAMS, of commissioning a fortieth anniversary novel by...
...by...
No, I can’t say it...
By...
*Takes deep breath*
Terrance Dicks and Barry Letts.
Are these, perhaps, a DIFFERENT Terrance Dicks and Barry Letts from the ones that have unleashed on the Whoniverse the horrors of Warmonger and Ghosts of N-Space? Or is this a BBC plot to destroy the programme once and for all?
Perhaps we should have a competition to guess the first line of this opus. My bet's on 'Doctor Who was a happy man, as he knew he would live forever in heaven, though he WAS a bit upset that one of his Companions had just been gang-raped.'
Excuse me while I go and sob quietly to myself in the corner.
I just think that now would be a good time for Ian levine to finally open his cupboard and finally show us how well he REALLY did on his hunt for missing episodes!
Of course, this will be preceeded by another missing episodes doco where he nearly pops a blood vessel saying "THERE AREN'T ANY MORE OUT THERE I TELLS YA!!!" (seeing "missing years" documentary for more information)
I also think they should release the remaining stories that were initially released as edited movies (Talons, Pyramids, Death To Daleks, Day Of Daleks and Time Warrior) as unedited videos.
Also I think Emily should be commissioned by the Beeb to record special "anti-commentary" for all of Colin Baker's era on DVD.
I can just see it now....
"[wretch] Ugh! Kill me now...... pleeeeeeeease...........[sob sob sob]must.....avert......eyes....."
I doubt you'll get unedited stories on VHS - presuming you're in the US (since I have episodic Pyramids, Death and Day on pre-recorded VHS) I've heard that you'l be lucky if you get all the stories out on VHS!
Also I think Emily should be commissioned by the Beeb to record special "anti-commentary" for all of Colin Baker's era on DVD.
To put a more positive spin on this idea (and to spare Emily from having to retch), perhaps have her comment (shall we say gush?) on Tom Baker's episodes and convince us all we should be HONOURED to get kicked in the face by him. J That would make everyone happy, including those who, you know, actually like Colin Baker. J
Phillip- I'm actually in Australia which always fares better than the US. We get all the bbc releases a couple months after the uk release. The only things we don't get here are the big finish audios which annoy me because some of them actuaslly sound interesting!
Did you know that Gary Russell played Dick in the Famous Five on TV?
Oh yes, Gary Russell's Dick is legendary.
Delightful as the idea of me recording a DVD commentary for EITHER Baker is, I can sense certain problems. For a start, I appreciate that constant sighs of 'Aah, the wit! The jelly babies! The wisdom! The Scarf! The vaguely Bohemian look! The teeth! The eyes! Ooh, what skilful horda-flicking!' might possibly begin to grate on fans' nerves after the first few dozen episodes. As for the Colin creature, if by some immense effort of willpower, some people can force themselves to ENJOY his pretence of being the Doctor, who am I to burst their bubble and confront them with the full, hideous truth? Lack of new TV Who has driven us all into finding perverted pleasure in the unlikeliest of places - I myself have got shamefully addicted to Big Finish audios.
Have a bunch of drunken Doctor Who fans watch any story with Leela for a commentary containing one word over and over- "Phowaaaaaaaaar!"
Well it is that time of year again. I would, once again, like to take this opportunity to thank you all for another wonderful year on the Who board. We've had fun, tears, laughter, joy without the verbal slanging (although we nearly descended when someone suggested Emily should stop bagging Colin- thankfully that was averted).
I would like to wish you and yours a happy and prosperous 2004.
VROOMNIK!!!
er
CHEERS!!!
Right back atcha, Rodney.
Hopefully a year in which major strides are made for the new series?
40 years of Who ... and beyond! J
The only reason I'm looking forward to 2004 is because it's closer to 2005, and hence Who, glorious new Who, all over our screens.
I suppose this might possibly be described, by normal humans, as a slightly sad attitude.
Happy New Year, everyone!
My how time flies!
I can't believe it's almost 2005.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Who board may I take this opportunity to, once again, wish you and yours a safe and prosperous 2005.
It will indeed be a memorable one with the new series, so let's all get behind it, support it and, most importantly- WATCH IT!!! Just think, by this time next year we'll all have the dvds of series one of the NEW SERIES!!!
[commence Emily mode]
NEW SERIES!!! A NEW SRIES EVERYONE!!!! It's time to frollick through meadows and hills with bounds of joy and tears of happiness as there is a NEW SERIES!!!!
[Emily mode off]
I'll be good now....
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Hi Everyone!
I can't believe it has been a year since I last posted on this topic.
I also can't believe it has been 4 straight years that I have done this.
Once again I would like to wish you and your families all the very best for this coming year including the second season of our beloved Who.
I can't believe it has been a year since I last posted on this topic.
And I can't believe you're not posting in Emily mode! You're way better that way!
Well, wasn't 2005 fun? I crashed out of full-time employment in a very permanent kind of way, and, slightly more importantly, the planet probably reached point-of-no-return as far as the Greenhouse Effect is concerned. I.e. we're all gonna die. But it was also the year that we were not just blessed with the return of Who, we were blessed with better Who than in the previous 42 years put together, a Doctor (actually TWO Doctors!!!) beyond our wildest dreams, and even the philistines and morons (i.e. non-fans) rushing to worship at the Whovian shrine. So...a pretty fantastic year, then. Here's to 2006, thirteen glorious episodes of Tennanty goodness, and a mending of all those hearts broken when a certain Time Lord decided to hang up his leather jacket.
So you're retired now?
One hesitates to use the word 'retired' when one is barely 33, but I'm currently working part-time (VERY part-time) and can't really imagine ever dragging myself back to the world of full-time gainful employment.
I agree Emily, all that time away from your Doctor Who collection is just not worth it!
I'm intrigued as to how can you lead such a wonderful lifestyle... did you win the lottery?
I'm with Emily. I've been unemployed since last September and, except for the lack of money and insurance, it's been awesome!
Re:Emily's "retirement"
I take it's due to "medical reasons", Em....?
A couple days late but I feel I must continue my tradition (my FIFTH year in a row!).
I would, once again, like to wish all the Doctor Who Nitcentral personnel a very happy new year, especially Mike, who continues to be a wonderful moderator (despite getting a little twitchy for no reason on the "Match Of The Day" board) and Emily who continues to amaze at STILL finding nits in Ninth Doctor episodes (I thought she liked them!).
May this year continue to a Whovian delight with not only season 3 of the new series but season 2 of Torchwood and season 1 of Sarah-Jane. And I think there is a new K9 series as well (bloody hell RTD, take it easy!)
I'm also glad that us poor souls in Australia (who currently are thrashing the Poms soundly in the cricket!) will get Season One of Torchwood sonner rather than later.
again- a happy new year to you all!
PS- a blatant plug- visit my myspace page at www.myspace.com/mrconductorman and say hi!
Well once again I would like to thank Mike and the rest of the Whovians on the nitcentral for another wonderful year of discussion and nitpicking. I enjoy contributing in my own small way to the discussions around here and will, God willing, continue to do so throughout 2009.
I'd like to take the opportunity to wish you all a safe and happy new year filled with much love and prosperity.
Oh, and if you are on facebook and want to say hi then feel free to do so (There aren't many Rodney Hrvatins on the web).
Happy new year to you too, Rodney. BTW, in case you missed it, I wrote you a note in November under Shameless Plugs IV in The Kitchen Sink which I'd really like you to see.
I guess this counts as 'A special message for all Whovians'...at least, those of 'em with the hideous misfortune to live Abroad...:
'BBC Director General Mark Thompson has told the Edinburgh International Television Festival the corporation is aiming to launch an international commercial version of the BBC iPlayer within a year.
The plans, which are subject to approval by the BBC Trust, will hopefully allow viewers around the world to watch BBC programmes, including Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, soon after their UK transmission.'
Cancel those emigration plans! Your lives will shortly be SORTED!
I wonder how much it will cost and how you can access it. And what does "commercial version" mean? I don't want something littered with advertising, bugs, and snipes.
Oh, the BBC wouldn't DARE contaminate Who with filthy adverts, not after the Time Of Angels fiasco. Presumably you'll cough up some cash and you'll get the Sacred Programmes just the way the gods intended.
Happy 47th Birthday Doctor Who! Huzzah!
God, a whole THREE YEARS until our Fiftieth Anniversary Multi-Doctor Special...
...er, I mean happy birthday, hooray, huzzah etc etc...
Here's to 47 more years, Doctor
God, a whole THREE YEARS until our Fiftieth Anniversary Multi-Doctor Special...
Yes I can't wait!!
"Doctor Who Executive Producer Mick Lewis is proud to announce the fiftieth anniversary story. It is to be co-written by Lewis and classic series writers Pip and Jane Baker and called "The Five Doctors And The Rani". Joining current Doctor Matt Smith will be former Doctors Colin Baker, Paul McGann and the mock heads of William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton (as seen in the classic special "Dimensions In Time"). "It promises to outstanding television," said Lewis,"we're bringing back not only classic Doctors but brilliant companions like Frobisher and Charley as well as classic Who monsters like The Dominators, Quarks and the Absorbaloff". Filming begins on April 1 in a quarry outside of Dorset...."
WOW- For once I won't be the target of Emily's wrath(Rodney-you better be ready to RUN)!!!
John- I've been ready to run for yeeears. Emily and I would be married if we didn't live in different continents I reckon....
"Doctor Who Executive Producer Mick Lewis is proud to announce the fiftieth anniversary story.
NOT. FUNNY.
(Especially after RTG claimed that Joe Lidster was the next RTG. If there's one writer who's ALMOST as bad as Mick Lewis...)
Though admittedly I DO rather like McGann, Frobisher (well, in Holy Terror obviously, not some stupid COMIC thing), the Absorbaloff and quarries...
Emily and I would be married if we didn't live in different continents I reckon....
In your dreams, sunshine!
Even now the Doc lets married couples aboard the TARDIS, I'm not taking the risk of being tied down...
In your dreams, sunshine!
Yeah, yeah, you say that but we all know how boring this board would be were it not for our lovers tiffs ;)
But hey- seeing as I'm here, let me take this opportunity to wish you all a happy a prosperous 2011. Thank you for another year of wonderful debate and comments!
Right back at you Rodney. I guess 2011 will arrive sooner for you down there in Australia.
Congrats to all- the Doctor Who boards have been the only boards commented on in the last 24 hours (from the time stamp you see next to my name anyway). It's like a dream come true....
Happy, happy days. Nozzing in ze vorld vill schtop us now...
...When would be a TACTFUL time to suggest to Phil that he delete all the other sections?
In fairness, I'm not sure how many of the shows on this board are still airing.
They're DEAD??? Tee hee hee! *Does victory dance* Why don't those people realise how SAD it is, obsessing over a dead TV programme -
- um, look, never mind...
Well Movies is always going.... and I guess the political and religious musings will have their contributors... To be fair though I think Phil should do a major flush of Nit-C. get rid of all series that haven't been posted in for the last couple years.
Yeah, of all the TV shows that have their own sections here (there are some in the Kitchen Sink), I think Doctor Who is the only one still in production.
Others have just finished, like Smallville. And then I Love Lucy, a show that finished more than fifty years ago, has a thread.
Congrats to all- the Doctor Who boards have been the only boards commented on in the last 24 hours (from the time stamp you see next to my name anyway). It's like a dream come true....
I miss that day today...
you ain't kidding Kevin!
Ah, but the 'popularity' of the other boards is obviously all due to a spammer.
Yes Emily, I think that's what Kevin was alluding to...
Ah. I thought he might just be getting jealous of all those other posts. I certainly was, at first glance.
Where the hell are the Moderators?
Emily, that is what I've been saying. My solution to this problem would be make ALL the boards like this one, where you have to register to post.
Right. I was complaining about how far down past all the spammed messages we had to scroll.
These auto-spammers are why we started using the registration system on the Who boards. Don't know why others are so resistant to it.
The Who boards were like the eye of the spam hurricane...all this spam, then calm, rational posting (and Emily's posts), followed by more furious spam...
After the last spam attack I believe one of our roving moderators locked those boards that didn't have moderators, so I'm wondering if there was a Discus glitch that reset those boards to public posting because a large number of the boards that had been hit hadn't had a moderator in years.
I posted the suggestion in the Kitchen Sink that the whole board should be made like this one, you have to register to post.
At the moment, Who is again the only board showing up on the Last Day search.
Didn't last long though.
Yeah, darn these people talking about Trek all the time!
Hey-it could be worse--someone promised us new episode titles for Futuramas sixth season way back on Jan.2 of this year.
Looks like the moderator has gone AWOL--oh, hi Rodney, are you still around???
To be honest JEP- I've lost a little of the passion for Futurama. barely anybody has posted on there to even ask for more episode titles to be added so I haven't bothered.
*Nods approvingly* Is that the one that uses the sacred name of Leela? Well, it'll take more than THAT to fool a True Fan forever...
Yup- once again we are the only section active in the last 24 hours. We rock!
Only problem is--I think for 12 of it I was the only one who posted!!!!!
THAT'S not a problem!
Well, of all the shows that have their own sections here, Doctor Who is the only one currently in production. So it's gonna get more traffic.
Funny, when this board started in the late 1990's, the Star Trek boards were the most active. Of course, back then there were two Star Trek shows on the air (Deep Space Nine and Voyager). However, the Trek boards dried up after Enteprise was cancelled in 2005 and there was no active Trek in production. Interest briefly spiked again after the 2009 movie came out, but dropped off as time passed. Probably whne the next movie is released, it will pick up again.
However, New Who has been in production for almost seven years now (and launched and outlived two spin-offs) and shows no sign of slowing down.
Funny how 2005 was the year that Modern Trek died (until the aforementioned 2009 movie) and New Who began.
Well, Primeval's back in production, as are the various CSI's and Law and Orders under Crime/Justice, and BSG and Stargate only went recently. But I think part of the problem is that a lot of SF-type shows are starting, then getting canned in a couple of years and there's not really any chance for people to get into them enough to start topics.
For example, I can't see Terra Nova ever justifying the money spent on it with a massive audience (and thus generate advertising revenue), so I can't see that lasting beyond a second season, if it even gets that far.
Although the front page here could probably do with a major reshape - put all the Treks under one parent topic, Buffy/Angel/Firefly under another, the various Gerry Anderson series in a third and so on.
And, to be honest, I wonder how many people are still posting here - for example, I've not seen anything by Callie for ages.
Forty-eight years ago today, Doctor Who premiered.
It might interest everyone to know that 2 more old missing episodes have been found, as reported by Doctorwhonews.net;
"The BBC revealed today that two complete episodes of Doctor Who have been returned to the BBC Archives.
Firstly, the complete third episode of the William Hartnell story Galaxy 4, Air Lock has been recovered - prior to this only a short segment from the first episode remained in the archive with no telesnaps taken to show how the third episode and its characters would have looked.
Secondly, the complete second episode of Patrick Troughton's third story The Underwater Menace has also been recovered - making this the earliest complete episode for the Second Doctor to now exist in the Archives (alongside the existing episode three).
Both episodes were found via former TVS engineer Terry Burnett, who bought them at a school fête in Marchwood, Southampton back in the 1980s! Restoration Team member Ralph Montagu told the Radio Times how they came to his attention:
I occasionally meet up with a group of film collectors and retired TV engineers at a café in Hampshire. A few months ago I spoke to Terry Burnett, who used to be an engineer at TVS [the former ITV franchise based in Southampton]. Somehow Doctor Who was mentioned in passing, and Terry said, ‘Oh, actually I think I’ve got an old episode. I thought it was bound to be something we’ve got already,” says Ralph. “I tried not to get too excited, but he came back the next day and brought this spool with him. It had no label, so I had a look at the film leader and it said ‘Air Lock’. I thought, ‘What’s that?’ I checked online and saw that Air Lock was an episode of Galaxy 4 - a missing Hartnell serial. So then I got very excited.
(meeting with Terry a couple of weeks later) And he said, ‘Guess what I’ve got.’ It was another episode of Doctor Who! Again not labelled on the can, but it turned out to be The Underwater Menace part two.”
I just wanted to wish everyone here a Merry Christmas--I hope each of you have a great day!!!!
(And so our Moderator won't feel left out--Happy New New Who Day as well!!!!!
Drat-left the closing ")" off on that last one.
Merry Christmas to all my fellow Whovians
Since it just passed midnight where I live--Happy New Year to all here!!!
May the upcoming year surpass your highest hopes!!!!
Happy New Year Whovians
Happy New Year everyone. 2012 promises to be interesting, in a "chinese curse" sort of way.
So it appears that once again Who has triumphed on this board for the last 24 hours! I think it's been a fair while since we weren't the overwhelming show of discussion on this site. yay for us!!!
Yes! Crush the lesser races! Conquer the galaxy! Unimaginable power! Unlimited rice pudding!
...Um, anyway, what I MEANT to say was...actually, I can't think of an appropriate quote...something where the Doctor's being modest whilst basking in his own superiority?
Has the Doctor EVER been modest about ANYTHING?
I'm sure he MUST have done - as one seldom thinks of him as a smug arrogant git - but I'm damned if I can think of a single occasion.
Well, if YOU can't think of a single occasion, that says it all, right there.
Yup- we've done it! 24 hours and only Who has been discussed! High five for us!!
I keep trying to start up the Firefly board, but no one's listening anymore.
Same on the West Wing board for me..
Should we be admitting to watching- let alone commenting on- non-Who related shows on a board Emily actually reads??
I've admitted watching and liking Star Trek and Stargate, and nothing bad happened.
....yet....
Emily's already had to accept Star Trek as a fait accompli. There are too many of us Trekkies to target. You're on your own with Stargate though.
Oh yes! Another 24 hours of nothing but Who on the nit-c boards! We rock!
It makes me want to post something on the Stargate boards, to get even.
That's just MEAN, Charles!
It doesn't count, because he posted in response to your announcement. Any reply to HIS post will not count either.
I keep waiting for someone to show up on the Firefly board, but no luck.
Hey guess what--it's been more than 24 hours since the last post on the Who board(mine, by the way).
Note:Several other boards(including 2 Star Trek boards) have had posts.
Since someone always mentions when it goes the other way--I thought I'd point this one out.
Oh well--It happens.
Fair is fair.
Fair IS fair.
Let's go slaughter those Trekkies!
(I mean, in the way implied by the footballer in The Lodger, NOT in the way the Doctor mistook it.)
I must confess, in the interest of full disclosure, that some of those recent posts on the other boards belong to me.
Emily:Let's go slaughter those Trekkies!
Really, really bad timing on that joke Emily.
Roughly 12 hours ago a gunman opened fire in a theatre showing "The Dark Knight Rises".
Current reports say there are at least 12 dead(I was hearing 14 earlier).
I must confess, in the interest of full disclosure, that some of those recent posts on the other boards belong to me.
Well, do penance to the goddess Santori and promise her you won't do it again IF SHE SENDS YOU SOME NEW WHO VERY SOON.
Emily:Let's go slaughter those Trekkies!
Really, really bad timing on that joke Emily.
But I made it QUITE CLEAR I meant 'beat them in the posting business' not massacre them. Haven't you SEEN The Lodger...oh god, you haven't seen The Lodger, have you. Look, THIS is why you should watch New Who - just to understand what people MEAN.
Well, do penance to the goddess Santori and promise her you won't do it again IF SHE SENDS YOU SOME NEW WHO VERY SOON.
I can't, I'm an atheist .
But remember when I said Space Channel was presenting a New Who first season marathon? They did the same with the second season last week, and are doing the third season this week. When they do stuff like that, it indicates that they are preparing the start of the new season, so there won't be too much longer to wait.
I can't, I'm an atheist
So am I, but come ON! Santori is OBVIOUSLY a cat, and therefore you JUST CAN'T HELP worshipping her...

See! The Santori-worshipping is working ALREADY!
This is a great board, and Emily (and Mike before her) is a great Mod. I find the people here friendly and courteous (sp?).
I've been butting heads in the Trek boards with a poster here who has a real attitude problem. In fact, this person has been banned from several boards here and has some of their comments, which went way over the line, removed (even by Phil himself on a few occasions). Whenever someone calls this person out on their attitude, they adopt a "Wahhhhhh, nobody likes me!" position. I've tried to point out that this person should change their attitude here, but I don't think they've gonna listen. I'm just waisting my breath.
Thankfully, no poster in the Who community is like this.
I don't know whether to cheer or cry at this but not only has Doctor Who been the only thing talked about on here in the last 24 hours- but it's been a NOVEL!!!
We rock!
Actually, Emily rocks the most because she is the one doing most of the work to keep the conversation going.
not only has Doctor Who been the only thing talked about on here in the last 24 hours- but it's been a NOVEL!!!
If you'd bothered to READ it, you'd know that it's actually been all about the Time Lords rather than Mission: Impractical. *Embarrassed cough* I really must move it.
Actually, Emily rocks the most because she is the one doing most of the work to keep the conversation going.
Yeah, I rock almost as much as a Sycorax. NONE of the rest of you were prepared to reread Mission: Impractical just so its Nitcentral section wouldn't look so (deservedly) neglected. It's SO NOT FAIR that you've somehow managed to cling on to these 'life' things instead of just SURRENDERING to being A Fan.
A Very Happy New Year to all Doctor Who fans, big and small, young and old. This is the year of the much awaited 50th year special, so may the hype be low and the awsomeness be high. And may 2013 generally be a better year for everyone than 2012 was.
With Emily around the hype will ALWAYS be too high and the awesomeness will ALWAYS be too low.
But have a great 2013 anyway!
Oi! The awesomeness was...well...AWESOME for Season 1/27!
Oi! The awesomeness was...well...AWESOME for Season 1/27!
and since then? I rest my case...
Since then, Seasons 2/28, 3/29, 4/30, Gaping Chasm Of Despair Year, 5/31, 6/32 and 7-and-a-half/33-and-a-half have all been pretty awesome too. Just not all of them, all the time.
Oh yes people!! Another 24-hour period of 100% pure Who on the Nit-C boards. All praise!!
Are you sure on that???
I see three posts that might refute that claim.
What are the hours you're claiming????
the 24 hours leading up to me making the last post of course...
Not sure about you, John, but I and I suspect most people here click on 'Last Day' to see the posts in the last 24 hours so we can read the recent discussions. Every now and then, Who is the only thing discussed in the past 24 hours, and Rodney or someone will point it out.
We Whovians have been carrying Nitcentral for years. Doctor Who is the only show that gets new posts on a regular basis (the Comic Books areas gets a lot of posts, but it's not a show).
Thank the dead gods of Krypton I'm a Whovian, so I can come here and find fresh conversations. I've tried posting in other forums here at NC, but gave up once I realized I was talking to myself.
One poster here complained that Who was getting much more activity than TNG. I correctly pointed out the reason was because Who was current, it is still in production. TNG, on the other hand, has been dead and done with for nearly twenty years now. It's old news.
You should ALSO have mentioned that it's because OUR programme WIPES THE FLOOR with THEIR nonsense.
Well, our forum is really the only active one here on a regular basis.
Woohoo- another 24 hours of only Who action on this board. High-fives all 'round!!
At least here in Doctor Who, when you post, you can count on getting a reply. In other parts of Nitcentral, you can hear the crickets chirping.
90% of this site is a smegging ghost town.
It's not really the fault of fans of (whispers it) other shows that we don't chat so much on the other topics. Nearly all of the other shows have ended and it's only topics like books, games and the Kitchen Sink which have anything currently ongoing on a regular basis.
The last topic to be set up for a specific show was for Primeval in 2008! I don't know whether there hasn't been any interest in moderating anything more modern, or whether new arrivals to the board just can't bothered, expecting to be entertained by others but not prepared to make any effort to assist the entertainment.
I get nervous when I see people slagging off the board. At least it's still here, but if the only comments about it continue to be negative, Phil might just not bother renewing the next annual subscription.

My guess, Callie, is that they probably feel it isn't worth the time and investment to have a section set up that no one will post in. There is a section for a show called Space Precinct that there is not ONE single post in.
When I heard that Charmed, a show I'm a fan of, was no longer banned here at Nitcentral (why it was banned remains a mystery to me). I considered asking Phil to let me set up a section for it. However, the thread I made about Charmed (which is located in the Science Fiction and Fantasy section of the Kitchen Sink) went absolutely nowhere (aside from me, only Andre posted in it), so there is really little point in setting up a whole section for it. No point in building a restaurant for customers that will never come.
Doctor Who fans are lucky that we have a thriving section here. Sections for Lesser Programs (as Emily would call them) have dried up, but we Whovians keep chugging along.
Once again the mighty Who boards have conquered all in the last 24 hours with Who being the only thing discussed.
Totally appropriate I feel.
Since I seem to be the first to think of it:
May everyone here have a very merry Christma, with many happy returns to all!!!!!
And IIRC and today has a new Who stoty(and to include Emiily in my well-wishing):
Happy New Who Day--and may you see many happy returns!!!!
And I don't care what the time-stamp says--where I am it is 12:15 on the 25th.
So there!!!!!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Who Day everybody
Happy New Year, fellow Whovians.
24 hours of nothing but Who on the Nit-C boards! We've done it again!! Huzzah!!
NOZZING IN ZE VORLD CAN SHTOP US NOW!!!!
Bear in mind that the Fourth Doctor says it's WRONG to gloat over a fallen enemy.
(You know...in Horror of Fang Rock. That story where you're always claiming that Tom is being a heartsless git.)
Mind you, I think he's wrong. REJOICE, REJOICE!
Another 24 hours with only Doctor Who posts on Nit Central. Woot!
48 hours now!
As I have said, Doctor Who is keeping Nitcentral alive.
Bad news everyone. Doctor Who has been cancelled!
April Fools
Click on 'Last Day' and it's just us again.
Don't worry, I'm sure someone will ruin this perfect oasis by posting in comic books or movies....
We must be close to 48 hours by now! The all-Who channel!!!
Good for us.
Wow- not only have there been no posts in the last 24 hours in non-Who boards, there have been none ON them either....
....or the software has gone funny.
Kinda sad that even Emily can't be bothered to post....
I'm away! I'm stuck SOCIALISING with my fellow human beings (and, worse, CHILDREN).*
I thought you guys could get on for ONE DAY without me, I really did.
*OK, when I say 'socialising' we DID manage to fit in Planet of the Dead AND Day-of-the-Doctor-on-their-3D!!-television.
(Unfortunately Day of the Doctor in 3D is still basically Day of the Doctor. But more on this when I've returned to civilisation and aren't desperate to crawl into bed cos I'll be woken unspeakably early by the pitter-pat of little feet.)
I've got a 3D tv as well and, naturally enough, have watch DoTD as well in 3D. Some great moments.
Yeah, that's the problem with DoTD. Some great moments, but no great STORY.
I'm not sure if 3D doesn't EXACERBATE this problem. When Clara wiping a transparent blackboard is the most exciting thing in a restoring-Gallifrey, twelve-Doctors-together fiftieth anniversary spectacular...
I thought it was the Doctor pretty reaching out of the screen touching your nose and saying "Do I have an office?"
Funnily enough, despite pretty much waiting the last 38 years for the Doctor to reach out of the screen towards me, that didn't seem like such a big deal. Maybe it was the 'Do I have an office' thing...
Hello from my new computer. Windows 8.1 and everything!
Sorry to hear you got stuck with Windows 8.
And it's just us again in the Last Day report.
That's no cause for celebration when we've ONLY GOT SEVEN POSTS!!!
C'mon people! All of time and space, everything that ever happened or ever will...where do you want to start?
Sorry to hear you got stuck with Windows 8.
I have Windows 8 too. No problems here.
I have it on my laptop too. Never boot into it it sucks so bad.
The two messages of this board come together.
A. Happy Holidays.
B. It's just us again in the Last Day view.
Two days now
Hey everyone, I felt I needed to share with you a special event for me.
My beautiful partner has just finished watching/listening to every single Who episode from Unearthly Child through to the end of season 8 of the new series (we'll be watching Last Christmas on the weekend). I'm so proud of her sticking with the program.
For the record- her favourite Doctor is Jon Pertwee, and she truly hated both "Greatest Show In The Galaxy" and "Ghostlight" (the latter which made me love her even more).
Oh and before Emily asks, no she will not be posting on Nit-C as she barely is on the internet.
Tender her our warmest congratulations/commiserations.
It must be love.
Did you make her listen to audios for the missing episodes?
I sure did. It's not the complete Who experience without at least hearing all the missing episodes. She boldly did that.
OH! and I even showed her both "Dimensions in Time" and "Curse of the Fatal Death" to REALLY make her feel like a completist (I will, however, draw the line at "Scream of the Shalka")
Wow, that's a lot of tv to watch. How long did that take?
You had your very own Adventures With The Wife In Space! And DIDN'T sign a bestselling book deal!* And, more importantly, DIDN'T share your thoughts on Nitcentral! (You could have typed hers up for us too. I always share in those rare cases the Not We I've got tied to the sofa says something remotely interesting.)
Still, your crimes against Nitcentral pale in comparison to forcing the poor woman to watch Dimensions in Time.
*Well, bestselling going by the fact every library in London seems to have a couple of copies. Even those libraries which wouldn't be caught dead lending me a PROPER Who book.
Well I figured she suffered through the TB era so why not "Dimensions in Time"?
But for the record, it's a fairly significant piece of Who history-
-last official performance by Jon Pertwee as Doc 3
-last time we see Liz Shaw.
- to date, the last time we see TB or CB perform onscreen as the Doctor
- pretty much every companion that features here has not repeated their performance onscreen since.
for more info, I suggest listening to this commentary on it (which plays over the youtube clip of it).
Oh and the entire run took about 18 months...
last official performance by Jon Pertwee as Doc 3
Except for 'The Ghosts of N-Space'.
Well I figured she suffered through the TB era so why not "Dimensions in Time"?
The TB era was A SUCCESS! A GLORIOUS SUCCESS!
the last time we see TB or CB perform onscreen as the Doctor
The Curator IS the Doctor! Was it too subtle for you?
pretty much every companion that features here has not repeated their performance onscreen since.
And this is NOT A COINCIDENCE!
(OK, it probably IS a coincidence. That's not the POINT.)
I suggest listening to this commentary on it (which plays over the youtube clip of it).
Thanks. As soon as I can face Dimensions in Time I'll be sure to hit the commentary as well.
Except for 'The Ghosts of N-Space'.
Don't remind Rodney of the existence of That Abomination! Who KNOWS what he might do to his helpless hostage...
Except for 'The Ghosts of N-Space'
On-screen, I meant. Sheesh.
Don't remind Rodney of the existence of That Abomination!
I don't need reminding. The cassettes (yes, CASSETTES!!!) are sitting on a shelf directly in front of me as I type. I've been thinking about getting her to listen to a couple audios. Maybe that's not a bad idea. I'll do it after she finishes reading "Rags"....
The TB era was A SUCCESS! A GLORIOUS SUCCESS!
Maybe the first two or three seasons were...
The Curator IS the Doctor! Was it too subtle for you?
But where was his scarf? His jelly babys? His stupid poetry after killing a whole bunch of people on a lighthouse?
His stupid poetry after killing a whole bunch of people on a lighthouse?
I thought Emily had talked to you about this?
Yeah but who listens to her? TB could literally fart his way through an episode and she'd think it was the greatest moment in TV history....
Heck, she even gives him a leave pass for NIGHTMARE OF EDEN and HORNS OF NIMON for goodness sake....
That's what true fans are for.
I've been thinking about getting her to listen to a couple audios. Maybe that's not a bad idea. I'll do it after she finishes reading "Rags"....
Excellent idea!
(I am, of course, assuming that 'after she finishes reading "Rags"' is a euphemism for 'never in a billion years even over my dead body'.)
The TB era was A SUCCESS! A GLORIOUS SUCCESS!
Maybe the first two or three seasons were...
And the next four or five years after that.
Seriously, there isn't a single season of Tom's that can honestly be described as a dud. Hell, there isn't a story that I haven't derived infinitely more pleasure than pain from, give or take The Sontaran Experiment.
The Curator IS the Doctor! Was it too subtle for you?
But where was his scarf? His jelly babys? His stupid poetry after killing a whole bunch of people on a lighthouse?
He's still the Doctor in his shirtsleeves (Deadly Assassin), black plastic Thal fetish gear (Genesis) or a Viking costume (Robot).
He's still the Doctor when he's not handing out jelly babies which, let's face it, is most of the time.
And he's NEVER killed a whole bunch of people on a lighthouse. (And I'd be the first to admit it if he had cos, frankly, I'd think none the worse of him if he HAD offed that bunch of total losers.)
I thought Emily had talked to you about this?
Many times, Judi *sigh* many many times.
I'm stuck in a chronic hysteresis.
Yes, I'm stuck in a chronic hysteresis.
I'm stuck in a chronic hysteresis.
Yes, I'm stuck in a chronic hysteresis...
Heck, she even gives him a leave pass for NIGHTMARE OF EDEN and HORNS OF NIMON for goodness sake....
Nightmare of Eden is a delightful little gem.
Horns of Nimon is redeemed ONLY by the fact that Tom and Soldeed are having fun, fun, fun.
Nothing but Who on the board for the last 24 hours! Time to party. I'm organising a cat hunting party. Who's in?
*Shakes head sadly*
It's like the ninety-five-thousandth-time the Master decides s/he's got a super-duper plan that will TOTALLY defeat the Doctor...this time.
Cats are the supreme beings of the universe! Get over it!
Yup- another 24 hours of only Who goodness. Mind you, only 4 entries in total! Emily must be having a bad day....
Yeah, any day in which one's typing up all one's notes on Deceit can certainly be categorised as A Bad Day.
I'm getting married. I know, pick your jaw off the floor.
Congratulations! If she can survive the black-and-white era - even the bits of it that aren't even black-and-white, that are AUDIO - she can DEFINITELY cope with you.
I don't suppose there's any point offering you a nice kitten for a wedding present...
Congratulations. When and where is the big event? (you don't have to be too specific about the 'where' if you're worried about us crashing the party. )
Yay, congrats, Rodney! You should send us all a piece of cake. After all, Nitcentral is so tiny these days, you wouldn't need a very big one. ;-)
Another 24 hours of only Who on Nit-C. Huzzah to all!
Until 18 minutes after your post.
and I reckon he did it just because of my post too....
And in a discussion named 'War Games' yet.
Ah yes, the posts in the Space: 1999 forum. A sadly underappreciated show. It was pretty good in its first season, IMO.
Yet another 24 hour window of only Who talk here. And quite a bit too!!
24 hours and not only is Doctor Who the only board on here active but Emily the only poster!
Actually in retrospect I kinda wish I hadn't desperately stuck SOMETHING up in the few minutes I managed to get hold of a computer.
It would have been quite fun if NOTHING WHATSOEVER had come up when you clicked on 'Last Day'...
Well 24 hours of nothin' but Who on here but not just Emily this time! Lots of discussion in various boards! Well done everyone!
*cue orchestra for Emily to make tear-filled speech thanking us all
...and I'd like to thank my cat for not sitting on the keyboard for a change, and I'd like to thank my great-great-great-great-grandparents for having sex at precisely the right momennt to bring a Who Fan into this world a few centuries later, and I'd like to thank Davros, Lord and Creator of the Daleks, for all-round coolness, and...
Is this the most discussion a non-anniversary episode has generated in a single day? Or does it just stand out more because it wasn't a particularly controversial episode?
(re: Invasion of the Zygons)
Emily - and I'd like to thank my cat for not sitting on the keyboard for a change
Are you saying that most of "your" posts are really the result of your cat walking and sitting on the keyboard??? 8-o
Just a little depressed today. Not Who-related (although that bizarre episode doesn't help). Honestly feeling so unloved at the moment by people close to me. Kinda stings.
Yeah, if you've got some great Who behind you then to HELL with everything else in the universe.
When you've got Sleep No More, however...
Things are OK with your fiancee, though? She watched The Web Planet for you, it must be love.
She watched EVERY EPISODE* for me.....
*that hasn't been cruelly burnt by the stupid BBC in their complete and utter ignorance....
** or hoarded by selfish and cruel collectors...
Above and beyond the call of duty.
I have some sad news for you all. The way my 2016 is shaping up, I may not be around here very much anymore. I will definitely add comments now and again but I may not be able to contribute in my usual wonderful way.
Have a great new year and I'll see you soon.
Oh and don't worry- I'll finish off the book of essays first!
Despite our sparring, I'll miss you my fellow Aussie. Fare thee well.
Get back here IMMEDIATELY!
You can't possibly let WEDDINGS and suchlike distract you from the IMPORTANT things in life!
If New Who and its spinoffs have taught us only one thing its that at any given wedding at least one of the happy couple will be a shape-shifting alien criminal in the pay of one of the Doctor's arch-enemies.
You can't possibly let WEDDINGS and suchlike distract you from the IMPORTANT things in life!
It's not just a wedding. It's a new full-time job as a teacher. That is going to be the kicker for me.
If New Who and its spinoffs have taught us only one thing its that at any given wedding at least one of the happy couple will be a shape-shifting alien criminal in the pay of one of the Doctor's arch-enemies.
Hmmmm... now you mention it, my fiancee encourages me to blink an awful lot....
It's a new full-time job as a teacher.
Marvellous! HUNDREDS OF INNOCENT MINDS TO INDOCTRINATE! There really is NO lesson that cannot be improved by copious amounts of Who-y goodness!
You don't know the subject(s) Rodders will be teaching yet, Em!
Congrats on the new job, Rodney.
A happy New Year to all.
Just pointing out that we don't even bother pointing it out anymore...
Thanks for pointing that out....
Huzzah! 24 hours of only Who discussion! Well done us!
Yes, fight that ridiculous concept of "getting a life" the Not We talk about! ;-)
Imagine Smart Alec reading to sick children in hospital ;)
24 hours of only Who-related nitcentrally goodness. Well done us!
Sorry to burst your bubble, Rodney, but there were a couple of posts in the Star Trek TOS forum in that time frame.
Of course, once can't blame you for not noticing, what with the site being the way it is.
24 hours of just us again.
Actually, Kevin, there was also activity in the Star Trek TOS forum again.
Not when he posted there wasn't.
As I said, it's hard to tell now, with the site the way it is.
No, Tim. It was easy to tell. When I posted, there was no activity on anything other than Doctor Who. Are you seriously going to keep saying that we're wrong, that your board had activity, and then say it's hard to tell with the way the board is, every time someone posts this comment now?
Well he has to wiggle his appendage at us as if to say "Look, I'm mod of the ST boards and look how active we are!!"
The Star Trek board did have activity when Rodney made his post. It did not when Kevin made his post. Checking for messages has become a tricky business, I have noticed several idiosyncracies that one has to beware. For instance, there is a setting to either search all the boards, or only the ones in one's list of favorites, and the search engine switches from one to the other unpredictably. So Rodney may have thought he was searching for messages in all the boards when he was only looking at the ones in his favorites. Or maybe not. The point is that it's now easy to miss posts if you don't pay close attention to what you are doing.
As always, Francois, you're the voice of reason.
Well, no Francois, I did not have it set to "favourites" as I'm always interested in seeing what boards are being used.
That being said- another 24 hours of only Who! Well done people.
Hate to burst your bubble again, Rodney, but if you look in the Last Day section, you'll see this:
ClassicTrek
Season One
The Naked Time
Tim McCree (Tim_m) - 12/23, 5:30 am - Hey, Id take that!
That's in the 24 hour time frame you outlined.
I guess there's no point saying it now.
24 hours of only Who topics! Tim must be on holiday!
Not a holiday, just a stomach virus.
24 hours of only Who discussion. Well done!
Good for you.
(Sorry - couldn't resist!)
Please can we have an intelligent debate?
Not Until God Sends Those People to Hell For What They Did To Me And My Friends.
You people are REALLY WEIRD.
I remember the digs at Arpit on rec arts drwho. If anything, we are being merciful to Jeff Winters.
But when We get To Heaven will I see all Those people Who I thought Were friends But I don't see Them anymore?
And will There be sex?
There is a TRAITOR in our midst.
Tim has posted in so many Twilight Zone boards that there are more Twilight Zone posts than Who posts in the last 24 hours....
This is our fault, we have failed our Doctor, mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa...
You know you can choose Who alone when you're searching for the last day of posts, thus eliminating at a stoke all the Lesser Programmes AND all knowledge of such treachery!
*Rolls eyes*
The Doctor probably created the powers of the Twilight Zone.
Yay 24 hours and only Who being discussed here!
That's nothing to gloat about when there's hardly any Who discussion. Even less Lesser Programme discussion brings me no comfort.
Well, ALMOST no comfort.
Well, we have to face the fact that the number of active members here are barely enough to fill up a Jury Box.
We gotta work with what we have.
Aaaaand it’s 24 hours of only Who discussion here at Nit-C!
Happy birthday to our esteemed moderator, Emily.
Have a Good one old girl!
Also, someone called William Hartnell who would be 114 today had the grim reaper not paid him a visit in the 1970’s….
A new audio adventure, in which I finally figure how to get the Doctor into one of my scripts without imitating him.
Nits welcomed, but remember that (a) this was more about having fun, and (c) I had some limitations I had to work with, which will become more apparent later.
Happy birthday, Emily.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-XbXhEA7KM
Happy Birthday, Emily.
And what about (b)?
Er, thanks, everyone, I guess...I'm sure you all mean well as you RUB SALT INTO MY GAPING WOUNDS...(On the plus side, if I'm growing old at least me n'Who are growing old TOGETHER. On the not-so-plus-side I've suddenly worryingly stopped seeing 'girl' as a misogynistic insult and started being pitifully grateful for it, even with 'old' attached...)
Kevin your latest adventure is...confusing. Why is everything spelt out on-screen a few minutes before it happens?
OK, it gets a lot better when you just start listening instead of reading the subtitles at the same time.
*Hits 7.45* Oh, you...ABSOLUTE AND TOTAL GIT.
(By the way, my parents waited the maximum legal limit before naming me. Dad was holding out for Saskia.)
Oh, and this:
https://v.cameo.com/e/7nwlgpYdEmb
The first line, which is revisited a few times, was by request.
Wh... wh... wh... wh... wh... awwww.... wh...wh... wh... wh...wh... ?!?!... wh... wh...wh... huh... wh... wh...wh... wh... but... but... but... wh...wh... wh... wh...wh... agghhh... wh... wh...wh... wh... wh...wh... wh... WHAT THE ACTUAL...
Wow, that's actually one of the nicest birthday gifts I have ever seen given to anyone.
Yes a little gratitude wouldn’t go astray…..
Oh, gratitude is definitely ONE of the emotions...
OK, time for the rewatch!
You...asked COLIN BAKER to wear TOM BAKER'S scarf? Weirdly I'm not so upset for the Sacred Scarf's sake so much as Colin's. Which is a bit of a cheek of me given what I've been saying behind his back about the Sixth Doctor for several decades but that was BEHIND HIS BACK!
'I don't know where you live of course' - thank the gods for small mercies, though of course that may hamper his efforts to save me...
'I WAS the Sixth Doctor' - which bit of 'He tells me you're a great fan of Doctor Who' did he not grasp...?
'You're probably much younger than forty' - *wince*
'My dear Emily' was really sweet.
'I raise my Scarf to your birthday' - awww!!
'As the New Year dawns imminently' - which bit of 'Eighth of January' does he not understand?
'New Year 2022 brings us, I hope, something other than diseases and injections and pain and suffering' - gee, thanks!
'I should be frightened if I was you' - just what I was thinking!
'I'm sure you have many, many other saviours queuing up to save you, Emily' - no! NONE of the other Doctors have so much as given me the time of day!
Aww, he is SO MUCH BETTER than the Sixth Doctor. I mean, not that I'm suddenly hankering for him to return as a Curator but the Scarf makes a difference, as does the lack of smugness and yellow perm. And Pip n'Jane lines.
How much did this - £96?! Tell me you DIDN'T!
That was...surreal. The most unexpected birthday present EVER.
Thank you.
Meaning of the name Emily
From the Latin name Aemilia, meaning "striving," "eager."
Meaning of the name Saskia
It is often said to be of Dutch or German origin, which originally meant "a Saxon woman" (alteration of "Saxia"). However, the name Saskia is thought by some to be of Slavic origin meaning "protector of mankind".
Just thought you'd like to know.
Happy Birthday.
Meaning of the name Emily
From the Latin name Aemilia, meaning "striving," "eager."
Ah! I don't strive - too much Who to watch/read/listen to to be bothered with STRIVING - but I'm certainly eager...
Meaning of the name Saskia
It is often said to be of Dutch or German origin, which originally meant "a Saxon woman" (alteration of "Saxia"). However, the name Saskia is thought by some to be of Slavic origin meaning "protector of mankind".
Hmm. Not Saxon and certainly not a protector of mankind.
Dad also fancied Melissa but I know that means 'Honey-Bee'. Well, we all do, courtesy of Stolen Earth...
Though I felt fine when I posted the audio adventure, I soon developed a migraine and had to force myself to come online to post the cameo link before it was too late. A day later, the migraine is not completely gone but it's at a level allowing me to function.
I did not ask him to wear The Scarf. I had no idea that would happen until I received the delivery.
In fact, there's a very limited character count in what you can say to the star. I had to give your name and the birthdate itself, plus request the 'Don't worry, Emily. I'm coming to save you' line for me to use in the audio adventure. I didn't expect he would repeat it a few times, but that worked out well for me.
I figured, correctly, that he'd say other things I could use in the audio, but I couldn't completely write the script until I had his video.
(Re: subtitles. Yeah, I was afraid the Cybermen would be difficult to understand, so I experimented. Alas, no spellchecker on that programme, so some typos did creep in.)
Price:
Sylvester McCoy was an option, but come on. It could only be Colin Baker for Emily. Even if he was five quid more. I assume that is a joke between the two stars. John Barrowman was available but prohibitively more. (A friend of mine did get him for another friend's b-day a couple years back though.) Jamie is a cheaper option as was Pearl Mackie, though she's temporarily away. After that, we're really down to 'Doctor Who??': Churchill, a guy who played the Silence, etc.
As for the expense, I got to make an original audio with a real Doctor. It was as much for me.
Incidentally, my name is pronounced strictly Anglo. My roots, however, are not French but Canadian. Maybe ultimately French but I have no idea. My great-grandmother spoke heavily-accented English but was clearly more at home with français québécois.
I love the French pronunciation and think it would fit perfectly with your Professorial persona…..
I got my wife a cameo from author Cheryl Trayed as she’s playing her in an upcoming play. She absolutely loved it.
Now I realise I’m not Emily but if someone wanted to surprise me with a cameo on my birthday next month from Catrin Stewart (aka Paternoster Jenny) then that would be great. She’s considerably less than CB…….
Bet you feel bad about all the horrible things you've said about Colin now, Emily.
The silence speaks volumes, I think…..
I did not ask him to wear The Scarf. I had no idea that would happen until I received the delivery.
Gods, that's...so tactful of you and so sweet of him to pay tribute to an infinitely superior Baker-Doctor...
Sylvester McCoy was an option, but come on. It could only be Colin Baker for Emily
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Well, I s'pose I'll have other birthdays...
(Not that anyone should EVER...I mean, this is the very definition of a once-in-a-lifetime experience...)
Even if he was five quid more
COLIN BAKER thought he was worth five quid more than SYLVESTER MCCOY!!!
After that, we're really down to 'Doctor Who??': Churchill, a guy who played the Silence, etc.
A guy who played THE SILENCE expects people to...REMEMBER him??
As for the expense, I got to make an original audio with a real Doctor.
You did! You really did!
Bet you feel bad about all the horrible things you've said about Colin now, Emily.
The silence speaks volumes, I think…..
Yeah, I gave the issue serious consideration and I certainly feel a lot more warmly towards the guy who dressed up in a Tom Baker Sacred Scarf for MY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!! than I do towards that THING IN THAT COAT that desecrated our lives 1984-86 but at the end of the day...maybe a tiny bit but I got over it...
Yeah, a bit ironic that Emily would be a Sixie companion. Although she'd be the kind of Companion to always be trying to forcefully regenerate the Doctor as well as shower him with a lot of kitties on the TARDIS.
The Sixth Doctor attempted to EAT A CAT in Two Docs! There is not a chance in hell I'd let him NEAR an oochie before I'd smashed his head against the console a few times...
If the changes in Two were affecting Six, what effects did they have on Three, Four, and Five?
We had that discussion on The Two Doctors page.
Well, Emily, it was a nice birthday gift. You have to say that.
I believe she did.
Well, 'nice' isn't a word I - or the Sixth Doctor, or the Tenth - particularly approves of. Also, paying an extra fiver to get me Colin instead of McCoy is a LOT of things but 'nice' ain't one of 'em...
Conspiracy theory: Colin Baker knows EXACTLY who Emily is and what she’s said about him and wore the scarf because he knew that seeing him in it would her off….
Nonsense, he was so sweet to me - 'my dear Emily' - in a way that's...highly unlikely if he'd read a word I'd said about him...
It's just a shame we never got a sixth Doctor with Emily as the companion.
It'd be like Inspector Clouseau & Kato.
;-)
Does Kato forcibly regenerate Clouseau by any chance...?
Kato randomly attacks Clouseau throughout the Pink Panther movie series.
Not now, Kato!!!
Lately, I've been enjoying the Kittisaurus channel on Youtube, and it suddenly occurred that our fearless mod (and everyone else as well) might also enjoy it.
When I hear the name "Kato", I picture this guy:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kato_Kaelin
Well, he is nicknamed Kato after the Green Hornet's driver, which is also the reason Cato's name is often spelt as Kato.
So it would seem.
Well it's a common enough name, such as in Kiss me Licia\Love me my Knight\Aishite Knight. The two brothers are named Go\Mirko Kato and Hashizo\Andrea Kato.
https://forebears.io/surnames/kato
Who people, WHO.
Yes even I am getting a little bored with talk of obscure superhero offsiders.
Rodney, only the Green Hornet qualifies as a superhero (although technically he's more of a pulp hero derived radio character.)
Clouseau is a bumbling police officer in a comedy movie series.
O.J. Simpson is a football player, actor and... well, not a superhero.
I have no idea about the manga characters.
But yeah people naming every character/person named Kato did go too far.
Staggeringly (and surprisingly) Tom has lasted to another birthday. Well done and happy birthday.
Maybe Colin or Sylvester will die before him.
Well given how worn out Colin looked in his message to Emily you may just be right.
Yeah
Though I also imagine 'em all surviving into the 100th anniversary of the show.
Staggeringly (and surprisingly) Tom has lasted to another birthday
You are the only one staggered and surprised by this as you are (OK, to be fair...WERE) the only person who spent several years prophesying his death...
Maybe Colin or Sylvester will die before him.
Well given how worn out Colin looked in his message to Emily you may just be right.
I am a TERRIBLE human who just thought how exciting it would be if Colin sort of dropped dead at the end of my lovely birthday message...
I'm now imagining an animated Emily being chased by an animated sixth Doctor's coat and the narrator says, "And then Emily was saved by the death of Colin Baker." Cut to a shot of Colin clutching his chest and face-planting onto the desk while the animation fades away.
And there was much rejoicing (from Emily, anyway.)
I am a TERRIBLE human who just thought how exciting it would be if Colin sort of dropped dead at the end of my lovely birthday message...
Think how I would have felt! Responsible and paying for it to boot.
Happy 59th everyone.
My reflection on this anniversary:
At the time of the previous anniversary came 2/3rd way through Flux.
Flux eventually ended with the remaining two episodes which then followed with three specials of 2022 with Eve of the Daleks, Legend of the Sea Devils and the Jodie Whittaker finale The Power of the Doctor.
The trailer of the yet to be titled The Power of the Doctor at the end of Legend of the Sea Devils revealed that it would see the return of Janet Fielding as Tegan and Sophie Aldred as Ace.
When The Power of the Doctor eventually arrived which also served as the BBC Centenary Special not only were Tegan and Ace in it as expected but unexpected cameos from other classic series companions as well as past Doctors.
I for one wasn't expecting for The Power of the Doctor to be quite a fanfest that it turned out to be.
Jodie's departure as the Doctor was at the same time of the showrunner who cast her Chris Chibnall.
Chibnall's successor was announced first when it was revealed to be Russell T Davies returning as showrunner.
In the period between the broadcast of Legend of the Sea Devils and The Power of the Doctor came the announcement of who Davies has chosen as the new Doctor and that person is Ncuti Gatwa.
Gatwa was initially thought to have become the Fourteenth Doctor.
However when Jodie regenerated at the end of The Power of the Doctor she turned into David Tennant, formerly the Tenth Doctor, who has now become the Fourteenth Doctor with Gatwa to follow on as the Fifteenth.
Why has the Doctor returned to the David Tennant form.
No doubt all will be revealed when Tennant makes his full on appearances as the Fourteenth Doctor in the 60th anniversary in 2023.
Why has the Doctor returned to the David Tennant form.
Because it makes us all HAPPY HAPPY OH SO HAPPY?
Why has the Doctor returned to the David Tennant form.
Because it makes us all HAPPY HAPPY OH SO HAPPY?
Who's "us"?
It makes you happy, Emily, no doubt.
As for me, the fact that they have to go crawling back to Tennant, and RTD, seems more like a sign of desperation.
And I'm far from alone in these feelings.*
*not so much here, but many at Gallifrey Base have these same doubts.
Sure, enjoy your doubts for the next year and then (a la Rose and Donna) queue up to publicly apologise for them and acknowledge the true greatness of Russell T God...
I'm also less than enthusiastic about the return of RTD. I hope I'm proved wrong and he doesn't just give us a rehash of 2005-10. I think I'd be happier if this was a return of the 10th Doctor and not yet another excuse to brand Who with David Tennant, to the exclusion of Jodie (and now Ncuti). It's like him being all over the audios, comics and Timelord Victorious stuff when we should have been getting more 13 promotion.
I'm excited to see Donna again, and Wilf of course - although pseudo-14 (Re10ant, the Fauxteenth Doctor, 10thDocMark3) meeting Wilf makes a mockery of "Some new man goes sauntering away, and I'm dead"

Only a fraction of people even noticed the EXISTENCE of such things compared to those watching JODIE! on TV. No matter how bad her viewing figures...

I CAN'T WAIT I CAN'T WAIT I -
- Oh. Gonna have to, aren't I.

Yeah, well, that line was stupid anyway, it's INCREDIBLY unhelpful when you've spent a lifetime (well, your lifetime since the moment Colin sat up anyway) struggling with the THEY'RE ALL THE SAME PERSON HONEST concept, AND it's sexist as hell.
Glad to see Tim, Crane and myself on the same page here. I’m not enthused by Tennant coming back at all as I’ve said elsewhere. I was even less impressed with the weak excuse RTD gave for why Tennant didn’t regenerate into Jodie’s clothes when there seemed to be no problem with the the Master wearing the outfit for a time.
I may be proven wrong but this just all feels wrong.
And no Emily, I will not WORSHIP HIM!
Three episodes won't kill any of you...
(I'd say 'Stop your belly-aching' in a Jackie-like voice if a) I could do imitations and b) I wouldn't be spending the next year whining my head off if it was...certain other Doctors.)
Well...
...I'm kinda on Emily's side here, for a change, but only to a certain point.
Yes, we could have just had another run-of-the-mill regeneration, no complications, not much confusion or amnesia, but the fact that it APPEARS to be changed up somewhat is okay with me.
It brings back some things we've heard before;
Fifth Doctor; "Don't you see? The regeneration is failing!" and "Feels different this time."
Ninth Doctor; ""I might have two heads or no head!" and "But it's a bit dodgy, this process. You never know what you'll end up with!"
The Curator; "And in years to come you might find yourself revisiting a few...but just the old favourites, eh?"
I'm sure this could be an illusion or something interfering with what should have been a by-the-book regeneration, but let's be honest-- we're getting a 'favourite' Doctor back, and just for a very short time, instead of some random guy newly invented for a single story (**coughcoughWarDoctorcoughcough!*, and then the series can start up again with the REAL new Doctor.
We all just gotta be patient.
The Curator; "And in years to come you might find yourself revisiting a few...but just the old favourites, eh?"
EXACTLY.
I mean, the time to start squealing about this sort of thing was NINE YEARS AGO but who didn't just ADORE our Curator?
(Well, Big Finish obviously, given what they BLASPHEMOUSLY did to him, but screw them.)

How true, how very very true...
We're getting three episodes of Tennant.
Three episodes.
That sounds alot like a 3-part, inter-connected, complicated, epic storyline.
And that's why we don't need to feel bad for Gatwa. The guy got a nice paycheque for the Barbie movie (ug!) and now he can focus on Doctor Who, which has probably begun production by now.
Blame the BBC for not starting a new season with Tennant and then just continuing it with Gatwa, instead of waiting until 2024. (double ug!)
