Who Board 101- Abridged Emily

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Doctor Who: Ask the Matrix: Who Board 101- Abridged Emily
By Rodney Hrvatin on Saturday, March 22, 2003 - 2:38 am:

Welcome one and all. This is my little tribute to my favourite poster on this board, Emily. Don't worry, I'm not even in the same country (nor do I have any funny desire other than to admire her Who knowledge and wisdom). To try and understand Emily a little more I decided to trek through the episode boards and gauge Emily's feelings on the stories of Doctor Who. I have divided the eps into four ratings. Love (eps she adores or leans toward liking), Meh (based on a Lisa Simpsons-ism about neutrality. Eps she doesn't mind but could live without), Loathe (from the mildly annoying to the absolute "BURN BURN BURN" mentality) and Unknown (for those rare boards she hasn't posted yet or made one rambling post that said nothing about likes or dislikes).
Todays topic- Black and White Who

Unearthly Child- Loathe
Daleks- meh
Edge Of Destruction- meh
Marco Polo- Loathe
Keys Of Marinus- Love
Aztecs- Love
Sensorites- Loathe
Reign Of Terror- Unknown
Planet Of Giants- meh
Dalek Invasion- Love
Rescue- Loathe
Romans- Unknown
Web Planet- Loathe
Crusade- Love
Space Museum- meh
The Chase- Loathe
Time Meddler- Loathe
Galaxy 4- meh
Myth Makers- Love
Mission/Masterplan- Loathe
Massacre- Unknown
Ark- Loathe
Celestial Toymaker- Loathe
Gunfighters- Loathe
Savages- Loathe
War Machines- Loathe
Smugglers- Unknown
Tenth Planet- Love
Power Of The Daleks- Love
Highlanders- Loathe
Underwater Menace- Love then Loathe
Moonbase- Love
Macra terror- meh
Faceless Ones- meh
Evil Of Daleks- Love
Tomb- Love
Abominable- Unknown
Ice Warriors- Loathe
Enemy Of The World- Unknown
Web Of Fear- Love
Fury From The Deep- meh
Wheel In Space- Loathe (I think)
Dominators- Unknown
Mind Robber- meh
Invasion- Loathe
Krotons- Unknown
Seeds Of Death- Loathe
Space Pirates- Unknown
War Games- meh

Interesting that. Clearly a dislike for almost anything Hartnell, Troughton fares a little better (mind you, her absolute 180 on "Menace" makes the board worth reading alone!)
Here endeth todays lesson.

By Rodney Hrvatin on Saturday, March 22, 2003 - 9:35 pm:

Lesson 2- Where Emily goes colour

Ok. here's part 2- the Pertwee and Tom Baker era.
This is nowhere near as daunting. Put the word "love" next to every Tom Baker story. NOW let's have a fascinating look at Pertwee's era...

Spearhead From Space- unknown
Silurians- Loathe
Ambassadors Of Death- meh
Inferno- Love
Terror Of The Autons- Love
Mind Of Evil- Love
Claws Of Axos- Loathe
Colony In Space- Loathe
The Daemons- meh
Day Of The Daleks- meh
Curse of Peladon- Loathe
Sea Devils- Loathe
The Mutants- Loathe
Time Monster- Unknown
The Three Doctors- meh
Carnival Of Monsters- Loathe (!)
Frontier In Space- meh
Planet Of The Daleks- meh
Green Death- meh
Time Warrior- unknown
Invasion Of The Dinosaurs- Loathe
Death To The Daleks- Loathe
Monster Of Peladon- Loathe
Planet Of Spiders- Loathe

soooo- out of 24 stories only 3 get the thumbs up, 7 get the middle of the road hand wiggle, and a whopping 11 get the thumbs down (the last season of his clearly not a favourite). Here endeth today's lesson.

By Luiner on Thursday, March 27, 2003 - 1:36 am:

On the whole, I can make a few conclusions by your lessons.

One: I agree with Emily about 50 percent of the time.

Two: I wonder why you would spend so much time analyzing Emily's posts. Actually, I wonder HOW you have so much time to analyzing her posts.

Three: Emily is a sweet woman that has been my very real pleasure to actually meet in person. Sorry, that was some gratuitous bragging on my part, even if she does read too many Dr Who books.

Four: Tom Baker is the bomb!

By Rodney Hrvatin on Thursday, March 27, 2003 - 4:18 am:

I wonder why you would spend so much time analyzing Emily's posts. Actually, I wonder HOW you have so much time to analyzing her posts. Lunier

well she always contributes to just about EVERY board around here so I figured I should compile them all into one "omnibus"
and I haven't finished yet!
Well being a musician, I am "between gigs"

Emily is a sweet woman that has been my very real pleasure to actually meet in person. Sorry, that was some gratuitous bragging on my part, even if she does read too many Dr Who books. -Lunier

Amen to that. The fact she can quote freely from them is quite scary. And I am sure if I ever introduced myself to her she would run a mile.

By Rodney Hrvatin on Thursday, March 27, 2003 - 2:15 pm:

Final installment today- Who in the 80's

Castrovalva- Love
4 to Doomsday- meh
Kinda- Loathe
Visitation- meh
Black Orchid- unknown
Earthshock- Love
Time-Flight- meh
Arc Of Infinity- Loathe (I think)
Snakedance- Love

Enlightenment- Love
King's Demons- meh
Five Doctors- Love

Awakening- Loathe
Frontios- Unknown
Ressurection- meh (!)
Planet Of Fire- unknown
Caves of Androzani- unknown (assume Love)
Twin Dilemma- Loathe
Attack Of The Cybermen- meh
Vengence On Varos- Love
Mark Of The Rani- meh
Two Doctors- Loathe
Timelash- Loathe
Revelation Of The Daleks- Loathe
Trial- LOATHE LOATHE LOATHE LOATHE
Time and the Rani- Loathe
Paradise Towers- Loathe
Delta and the Bannermen- Love (faints in shock at THAT ghastly revelation)
Dragonfire- Love

Happiness Patrol- Loathe
Silver Nemesis- Loathe
Greatest Show In The Galaxy- Loathe
Battlefield- unknown
Ghost Light- unknown
Curse Of Fenric- Love (I think)
Survival- Love

Poor Davison, Baker and McCoy- there was just no way they were going to compare with the illustrious Tom in our Emily's eyes. Only 12 of the stories above rank with the "Love" category. While curiously, several are unknown. 15 rank with the "loathe" category, while the rest fall into the giant pit filled with "meh" stories.
The most STAGGERING of all was Delta and the Bannermen. My respect for Emily almost flew right out the window with this revelation. Oh well- as Homer SImpsons says "We're none of us perfect"

Thank you for your attention.
Comments accepted graciously- and possibly the illustrious Emily may fill in some gaps for us!

By Emily on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 5:58 pm:

My fan!!!

Hey, I didn't know I loved the Myth Makers. In fact, I'm pretty sure I don't.

As for the unknowns - Romans, Frontios, Time Monster, Dominators, Space Pirates: Loathe. (Have I REALLY not made that clear about the Dominators?)

Reign of Terror, Planet of Fire, Black Orchid, Time Warrior, Spearhead from Space, Krotons, Enemy of the World, The Massacre - Meh.

Remembrance, Ghostlight, Battlefield, Caves, Terminus, Abominable Snowmen - Love.

The Smugglers - Christ knows.

Luiner, I read too many Who books??!!!!! I think what you mean is that you don't read enough Who books. Indeed, ANY. Finished Dead Romance yet, by any chance?

By Rodney Hrvatin on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 6:57 pm:

How else do I interpret this quote from the Myth Makers board?
"Well, I quite liked it"

and what about the Massacre? That STILL is an unknown!
But I am still flattered you took the time to visit my little tribute.

And Lunier is right, you DO read too many books [insert chuckle here]

By Mr. C. Baker on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 10:23 am:

Emily is 'sweet'?
Uh, no she's not.

By Mr. T. Baker on Wednesday, April 02, 2003 - 4:08 pm:

Personally, I think she's adorable.

By Mr. W. Hartnell on Thursday, April 03, 2003 - 12:32 am:

Hmmph, well, she bores me to tires. Tears. What was I saying, hmm?

By Mr.H.Sullivan on Thursday, April 03, 2003 - 10:09 am:

I usually just call her 'old thing' and leave it that.

By Sarah Jane Smith on Friday, April 04, 2003 - 2:46 am:

Say that one more time, and I'll spit in your eye!

By Daniel OMahony on Friday, April 04, 2003 - 8:32 am:

Might I suggest that, rather than 'loathe', a more characteristic Negative Emily reaction would be 'pah!'?

By Luke on Sunday, April 20, 2003 - 6:07 am:

Hahahahahaa, I only just discovered this thread.
It's awesome!
Now, when I sit back and watch Doctor Who and think 'I wonder what Emily thinks of this episode?' I can just check it quickly here instead of having to go through all the other boards.

rocknroll!

By Emily on Sunday, April 20, 2003 - 10:57 am:

Yes - and _I_ can do the same thing! I still can't get over liking the Myth Makers. My brain suppressed that feeling pretty thoroughly.

By Rodney Hrvatin on Sunday, April 20, 2003 - 4:42 pm:

Perhaps another 180 turn like "Underwater Menace"?

And do you REALLY love "Delta and the bannermen"???? AND "Terminus"??????

By Emily on Sunday, April 20, 2003 - 5:54 pm:

Yes! Delta is great fun and Terminus has lots of scary lepers!

And I'll remind you that my foul slander of Underwater Menace occurred _before_ I watched the thing, or at least its one surviving episode. I was led astray by propaganda from a secret anti-Underwater Menace conspiracy, but once I had seen it myself the scales fell from my eyes and I welcomed it with open arms into the Who family.

By Phillip Culley (Pculley) on Sunday, April 20, 2003 - 9:16 pm:

Thank god - another TUM fan! Since I saw the whole thing I've come to love this story - it's just so wonderfully silly (and episode 3 fits in perfectly to anyone who jugdes it solely on the one episode!)

By Rodney Hrvatin on Monday, April 21, 2003 - 12:05 am:

wow- that makes TWO of them then!

As much as I admire the BRILLIANT Patrick Troughton (indeed he is my favourite), I've seen the missing ep and I have to say, it's the pits.

Sorry.

By Emily on Saturday, April 26, 2003 - 10:10 am:

You will be...;)

By Rodney Hrvatin on Sunday, April 27, 2003 - 3:08 am:

Hmmm....forgot I started this topic...Just wondering if I need to update? Also, I've always felt a need to actually go through the Tom Baker boards and find out if there are in fact ANY TB stories she DOESN'T like (apart from "Logopolis")

By Mike Konczewski on Monday, August 28, 2006 - 8:01 am:

If you keep adding posts solely about Emily, Rodney, I'm going to start suspecting you have a crush on her.

By Chris Thomas on Monday, August 28, 2006 - 7:43 pm:

This thread does need an update to include the 8th, 9th and 10th Doctors.

By Rodney Hrvatin on Monday, August 28, 2006 - 10:46 pm:

Mike- As much as I adore Emilys postings and our witty banter I can assure everyone that I have no great desire to hop a plane to london and seek her out, given that the last time I made a compliment to her she snarled at me. Besides, aren't her and Lawrence Miles a couple?

Chris- Yes, I think I need to visit the various boards and update.

By Mike Konczewski on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 - 5:07 am:

No, they are just friends.

By Emily on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 - 11:14 am:

It's hardly worth doing an Abridged Emily on each new series episode, what with my 'opinions' strongly resembling those of a religious cultist whose Messiah has, against all expectations, finally materialised. (You know, there's NOTHING that expresses my feelings on watching 'Rose' for the first time better than some godawful hymn we were forced to sing at school along the lines of 'And now he's here/And I can see his face/the light in shining where the darkness used to be/and all the world is a different place'. Or some such hideously embarrassing gibberish.)

Oh, and to save you the trouble of going through the Tom Baker boards...

Loathes: Meglos, Sontaran Experiment, Invisible Enemy, Underworld, Power of Kroll, Logopolis

Meh: Argmageddon Factor, Revenge of the Cybermen, Terror of the Zygons, Destiny of the Daleks, Horns of Nimon, Leisure Hive.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Thursday, September 13, 2007 - 3:33 pm:

Was a little bored at rehearsals last night and suddenly this little top ten list popped into my head....

The Top 10 Signs Emily Is Addicted To Doctor Who
================================================

10) Mobile phone not only has Doctor Who theme when ringing, it has a TARDIS sound for text messages and a picture of Tom Baker when friends call, Colin Baker when enemies call and The Master when work calls.

9) Doorbell emits sounds sound of K-9 saying "Mistress, someone requires entry"

8) She has tracked down John Leeson just to set that doorbell up.

7) She has Stephen Moffat on speed dial so she can ring him whenever she finds faults with "Girl In The Fireplace"

6) Is seen in French Renaissance gear looking into fireplaces going "Are you there Doctor?"

5) Fought a long and drawn out court battle so her car licence plate can read "WHO1"

4) Has spent thousands of pounds working out the street where "Fear Her" takes place so in 2012 she can be there when The Doctor and Rose turn up.

3) Has put stickers on the inside of Doctor Who reference books pointing out all the factual errors as a service to unwary buyers.

2) Still has a box of Doctor Who iceblocks from the 1960's in her freezer.

and the number one sign....

1) Pointed out to the animal welfare that she in fact does NOT own 20 cats, she's just minding "the kids"....

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Friday, September 14, 2007 - 6:45 am:

IF ONLY I had a mobile phone, a doorbell, a fireplace, a car, a freezer, and 20 cats that would no doubt be spot-on...

Emily seems to be ignorant of all TV shows aside from Who. I don't believe it, no one can be, not in this day and age. I think Emily is just messing with us.

To test this, I've posted the following questions for Emily to answer. ANYONE who owns a TV should know them. Here we go...

1. What is the name of Mr. Spock's home planet?

2 Gilligan's Island has seven stranded castaways. Gilligan is one, of course. There are six others, name one.

3. What is the name of the Boston bar owned by Sam Malone. Hint, the name of the show is the same.

4. Miley Cyrus stars as a famous pop singer. What is that singer's name?

5. Name one of the six Friends.

6. Who are the two main characters on The X-Files?

7. Name a character from one of the Stargate shows.

Okay, Emily, you're up!

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 - 10:45 pm:

Yeah good luck with that one Tim.....

Funnily enough I thought of a multiple choice quiz to check to see if you are Emily...went something like this...

1.A famous and highly influential TV show from the sixties was called "Star...."

a) Trek
b) Wars
c) Blazers
d) ..ring William Hartnell as The Doctor

2. William Shakespeare was...

a) A famous playright
b) A singer from the 60's
c) all of the above
d) That bearded git from "The Shakespeare Code" who nearly murdered us all if it wasn't for the glorious tenth Doctor saving the day

3. The Queen...

a) rules the British Empire
b) is a British Monarch
c) is old
d) is that stupid woman who nearly had her house crushed by the Titanic

4. A popular American sitcom is called "The Big Bang...."

a) Theory
b) Sextape
c) Mysteries
d) It's not American, it's not a sitcom- it's the finale to season 5 you lazy gits!

Emily seems to be ignorant of all TV shows aside from Who. I don't believe it, no one can be, not in this day and age. I think Emily is just messing with us.

Put it this way: it's quite possible that, during the Sixteen Long And Barren Years Of Despair, I may have succumbed to lesser programmes recommended by Who fans in an unsuccessful attempt to fill the gaping hole ripped in my life, but if I DID...I certainly wouldn't ADMIT to being unfaithful to Who, WHATEVER the provocation.

1. What is the name of Mr. Spock's home planet?

VULCAN! It's been on the tip of my tongue all day and NOW I've finally remembered the Completely Useless Encyclopedia talking about whether we or Trekkies came up with the planet Vulcan first.

2 Gilligan's Island has seven stranded castaways. Gilligan is one, of course. There are six others, name one.

Sunshine, I wouldn't have even been able to name Gilligan.

3. What is the name of the Boston bar owned by Sam Malone. Hint, the name of the show is the same.

How the hell should I know?

4. Miley Cyrus stars as a famous pop singer. What is that singer's name?

Uh?

5. Name one of the six Friends.

Rachel. (Had a friend who was a BIG Friends fan. Was deprived of Who for WEEKS once when I lent him my video so he could record 'em all.)

6. Who are the two main characters on The X-Files?

Mulder and Scully.

7. Name a character from one of the Stargate shows.

Pass.

Rodney, OBVIOUSLY the answer to ALL your questions is d), except that it should have been 'Tenth Doctor' and 'season 5/31'.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 - 3:02 pm:

I couldn't answer two of those questions myself. Not everybody watches a lot of TV, Tim, and there's a definite science fiction bias in your choices.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 - 5:37 pm:

VULCAN! It's been on the tip of my tongue all day and NOW I've finally remembered the Completely Useless Encyclopedia talking about whether we or Trekkies came up with the planet Vulcan first.

Trekkies came up with it first I'm afraid. Roddenberry's pilot for Star Trek was filmed in 1964 and the first episode of the proper series aired about two months before "Power Of The Daleks" aired. Spock was the only character that survived from the pilot episode to the series proper- I don't remember if his home planet was specifically mentioned on screen during the pilot but it was mentioned in the first couple episodes of the original episode.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 - 6:32 pm:

Well it goes back to Roman mythology. Neither camp can claim originality here.

Just because you like other shows does not make you any less a Who fan. I like many shows, but I still consider myself a Who fan.

Sunshine, I wouldn't have even been able to name Gilligan

You have GOT to be joking. The other characters are Skipper, the Professor, Mr and Mrs. Howell, Ginger and Mary Ann.

3. What is the name of the Boston bar owned by Sam Malone. Hint, the name of the show is the same.

How the hell should I know?

The answer is Cheers.

4. Miley Cyrus stars as a famous pop singer. What is that singer's name?

Uh?

Hannah Montana

7. Name a character from one of the Stargate shows.

Pass.

Nicholas Rush (Stargate Universe)

The others you got, Emily.

Here is a bonus question: Tweety Bird says the famous line "I tawt I taw a..." What words follow?

By Callie (Csullivan) on Thursday, January 27, 2011 - 2:15 am:

To the best of my knowledge, Gilligan's Island has never been shown in Britain. I too couldn't have answered that question.

And with respect, Tim, the answer to number 7 is not Nicholas Rush. That's one answer but there are over a dozen equally correct answers!

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Thursday, January 27, 2011 - 4:23 am:

Apparently only 13 episodes of Gilligan's Island ever ran in England & I believe it wasn't on a major network.

You poor, poor deprived people. Missing the greatest comedy ever made. *tsk tsk*

Gilligan's Island viewers only - Hey, if they've never seen it, they can't say I'm wrong! ;-)

Vulcan was the name for a planet believed to exist between Mercury & the Sun back in 1859.

Tweety Bird says the famous line "I tawt I taw a..." What words follow?
Tyberman? ;-)

I just used Rush as one possible answer. Maybe I should have worded in differently. I could have easily said Cameron Mitchell or Sam Carter.

Tim:You have GOT to be joking. The other characters are Skipper, the Professor, Mr and Mrs. Howell, Ginger and Mary Ann.

Sorry Tim, incomplete answer-therefore wrong-you didn't give the complete name for anyone.

While I admit three are tough, the other three are pretty easy(and Gilligan is an unknown)--surely you can do better than this!!!

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Sunday, January 30, 2011 - 1:45 am:

Willy Gilligan.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Sunday, January 30, 2011 - 4:41 am:

Okay, John, just for you...

Gilligan's first name is Willy (short for William or Willard, never said aloud, but apparently on scripts). The Skipper is Jonas Grumby, the Professor is Roy Hinkly. The Howell's first names are Thurston and Eunice (although she was always refered to by Thurston's affectionate nickname for her, Lovey). Ginger Grant and Mary Ann Summers.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Monday, January 31, 2011 - 4:07 am:

I think Gilligan's first name was spoken in the unaired pilot (I saw it on either Veoh.com, or Hulu.com, a few years back, but they no longer have the rights to broadcast it, so I can't double-check.)

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Tuesday, February 01, 2011 - 4:27 am:

Could be, I've never seen said pilot.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Tuesday, February 01, 2011 - 2:13 pm:

I'm 100% sure KAM got it right.

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Tuesday, February 01, 2011 - 2:55 pm:

Sorry, Emily-I think this line was used before we had ever heard tybermen.

Tim:Gilligan's first name is Willy (short for William or Willard, never said aloud, but apparently on scripts). The Skipper is Jonas Grumby, the Professor is Roy Hinkly. The Howell's first names are Thurston and Eunice (although she was always refered to by Thurston's affectionate nickname for her, Lovey). Ginger Grant and Mary Ann Summers.

I'm impressed Tim-you got two of the toughest ones right, plus two of the easy ones.

On the other hand- Mr. Howells name is Thurston Howell the Third, and is often mentioned. I know I'm being picky but-

About Mrs. Howell- I always thought it was Lovey-I don't know where Eunice comes from(I see that Wikipedia says it-but that's the first place I've seen it).

Also-only Mr. Howell calls her Lovey- everyone else always call her Mrs. Howell.

Wikipedia also states that Willie Gilligan was Sherwood Schwartz's choise for his name-but it was never used.

On the other hand-Bob Denver has stated in interviews that he thinks it's Gil Egan(run together as Gilligan).

If Bob Denver doesn't know the answer-I doubt anyone knows for sure-so it doesn't count.

So you got 4 of 6 (including the tough 2)-so I have to say-very good-I am impressed.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Tuesday, February 01, 2011 - 6:12 pm:

Eunice might have been on a script, but was never said out loud (like Willy as Gilligan's first name).

By Kate Halprin (Kitten) on Saturday, April 23, 2011 - 1:38 pm:

To be fair to Emily, hardly anyone in the UK knows much about Gilligan's Island, which was hardly shown over here.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Saturday, April 23, 2011 - 6:07 pm:

Lucky.

By Amanda Gordon (Mandy) on Saturday, April 23, 2011 - 7:06 pm:

Emily and I have not always agreed, but one thing we do have in common, a love of cats. All my life, I've had a cat(s).

I'm a proud supporter of my local Human Society (where I adopted my current cat from in 2012). One thing that makes me see red is hearing about ANY animals (be it cats, dogs, or other), being abused.

I would solely love to introduce those animal abusers to a Dalek!

O_o

"Come on down to the Human Society and adopt a human as a pet! They're not the evil monsters that some claim they are!"

You left yourself wide open there, Tim :-)

Emily is really the audience I'm aiming for with my Timelost stories. She knows Doctor Who from back to front, so, going in, she knows who all the characters are beforehand.

The problem is that most of the Who fans who post stories at FF.net only know Doctor Who through the Modern Series.

So while this mean they would know who Sally Sparrow is (however, she seems to be slowly fading from memory, since it's been over a decade since Blink was made), however, they have no idea who Vince Hawkins is, because they would never have seen Horror Of Fang Rock. To these people, Classic Who is something to point and laugh at (BURN THE BLASPHEMERS).

My latest story, Stone Circle, to fully understand what is going on, you would have to have seen Stones Of Blood.

However, only people like Emily, people who love Classic Who as well as Modern, would do this.

Wish there were more people out there like Emily.

Aww, thanks, Tim, you must be the only person who's ever said THAT.

Even I, on balance, accept that it's a good thing there's only one of me.

There is an infinite number of you spread accross endless universes. There's probably even a version who doesn't like cats. Think about that.

*Thinks about that*

Hang on, Em.

The other universes might point at us and say, 'There goes the universe that destroyed at the early episodes'.

Let's not be too hasty.

I'm just glad that Emily liked my stories (even if she's not totally onboard with the whole Sally/Vince pairing).

I know I'm many years late coming to this thread, but I can't help thinking that the TV quiz Tim gave for Emily back in 2011 was a trifle unfair, since only U.S. shows were included, and I'm pretty certain she is British. She did manage some correct answers to her credit.

I don't know how many of the shows mentioned ever made it to British television. I know that the original Star Trek did, and I'm pretty sure The X-Files did as well because two of the gentlemen who wrote The Discontinuity Guide (Martin Day and Keith Topping) also wrote a similar guide for that show, although it only covered the first five seasons.

Clearly, she needs to be quizzed on British shows. My knowledge is limited considering that like Tim I'm a Canadian, but we have had many British shows air here over the years.

She should be asked questions like the following:

1. What early Seventies science fiction show starred Ed Bishop as Colonel Edward Straker?

2. What animal is a dissatisfied customer trying to return to a pet store in a sketch on Monty Python's Flying Circus and what was wrong with it?

3. Name one of the two ladies who works in the ladies department at Grace Brothers.

4. What is the name of the character in the Blackadder series who is always coming up with "a cunning plan" which usually turns out to be foolish?

Please, no one answer these before Emily gets a chance! :-)

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Friday, September 29, 2023 - 3:41 pm:

1. No bloody idea.
2. Parrot! (As seen, er, heard in Sixth Doctor audio Lure of the Nomad.)
3. Uh?
4. Baldrick!

By Brad J Filippone (Binro_the_heretic) on Friday, September 29, 2023 - 5:08 pm:

Well, number one was a series called UFO.
The ladies tending the ladies department at Grace Brothers (the series was called Are You Being Served?) were Mrs. Slocombe and Miss Brahms.

Glad you've heard of Baldrick though!
