Doctor Who Awards

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Doctor Who: Ask the Matrix: Doctor Who Awards
By Mike Konczewski on Tuesday, June 06, 2006 - 9:50 pm:

The ballot is out for the 2006 Hugo Awards. For those of you who are not fans of SF outside of Who, the Hugos are the official science fiction awards, voted on by the fans themselves (sort of a combination of the Oscars and MLB's All-Star Games). Doctor Who is nominated three times in the Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form category--"Dalek", "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances", and "Father's Day."

If you're interested in voting, the form is here:
http://www.laconiv.org/2006/hugos/ballot.htm
Please note that voting is NOT free; you have to be a Supporting member (US$50). Information on joining can be found here:
http://www.laconiv.org/2006/reg/reg.htm

Enjoy!

By Emily on Saturday, June 10, 2006 - 4:41 pm:

$50!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I'll just have to put my faith in justice and human nature and the fact that new Who blatantly obviously wipes with floor with, well, everything in the history of the universe ever.

Not that I usually have much faith in justice, human nature, etc, but they're a less drastic option than coughing up FIFTY DOLLARS...

By Chris Marks on Monday, June 26, 2006 - 6:58 am:

Emily, I would have thought no expense was too much for you to re-educate the entire planet into worshipping the good Doctor in all his forms.

Besides, with the Sterling:Dollar exchange rate at the moment, that's only about twelve and a half pence :-D

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Monday, June 26, 2006 - 9:25 am:

It's closer to 50 pence.

By Mike Konczewski on Monday, August 28, 2006 - 8:27 am:

Well, I won't claim this post had any effect, but the Hugo Awards were presented last weekend:

"Steven Moffat's first series episodes The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances won the prestigious Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form) at the 2006 World Science Fiction Convention in Anaheim, California on Saturday, besting two other episodes which were also nominated for the same category -- Paul Cornell's "Father's Day" and Rob Shearman's "Dalek" -- as well as an episode of the SF series "Battlestar Galactica". The Hugo Awards are the science fiction community's most prestigious honors, awarded by the World Science Fiction Society at each annual convention; the "long form" Dramatic Hugo was given to the 2005 film "Serenity"."

(from www.gallifreyone.com).

Personally, I would have given the award to "Father's Day", but I'm just glad they won.

My god - when we're in fashion we're REALLY in fashion. After decades of persecution, too. I feel like Cinderella...

By Mike Konczewski (Mkonczewski) on Thursday, March 29, 2007 - 10:08 am:

The nominees for the 2007 Hugo Awards have been announced, and "Doctor Who" is there again:

Dramatic Presentation, Short Form--
Battlestar Galactica, “Downloaded.”
Doctor Who, “Army of Ghosts” and “Doomsday.” Written by Russell T. Davies.
Doctor Who, “Girl in the Fireplace.” Written by Steven Moffat.
Doctor Who, “School Reunion.” Written by Toby Whithouse.
Stargate SG-1, “200.”

Anyone can vote for the awards by registering as a supporting member (http://www.nippon2007.us/registration.php). I kind of doubt many of us are going, seeing as it's being held in Yokohama, Japan. But you never know.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Friday, March 21, 2008 - 6:22 pm:

Well the next lot of Hugo nominations are out and....surprise, surprise....Stephen Moffatt is setting himself up for three wins in a row with "Blink". Also nominated are the double episode "Family Of Blood/Human Nature" and Torchwood episode "Captain Jack Harkness" alongside Battlestar Galactica's movie "Razor" and an episode of "Star Trek New Voyages"...I didn't even know there was a new series of Star Trek out....

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Friday, March 21, 2008 - 6:41 pm:

I think this Star Trek is exclusively a web-based series, if memory serves me. However, since some of the Trek actors are involved, I guess that qualifies it.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Friday, March 21, 2008 - 8:50 pm:

It's also fan-based.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Sunday, March 23, 2008 - 5:34 pm:

Don't get me wrong, I'm delighted Torchwood got nominated, but...what kind of sick freak thinks that Captain Jack Harkness (fond though I am of it) is BETTER THAN GRIDLOCK? Have they not SEEN the little kittens?!

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Sunday, March 23, 2008 - 9:11 pm:

they did....hence the reason it wasn't nominated....

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 - 3:05 pm:

Ah, Rodney *shakes head sadly* Did you think I'd've forgotten so soon your blinding Tosh-shaped light on the road to Damascus? We all know you adore the fluffy diddumses, you can stop pretending...

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 - 11:50 pm:

Yes, well, Tosh has now gone back to her owner so we can start fixing up the garden and retrieving all the dead birds now. Stupid ferral pest.......

By Josh M (Joshm) on Thursday, March 27, 2008 - 1:12 am:

Rodney Hrvatin: they did....hence the reason it wasn't nominated....

*rimshot*

You said it, brother.

By Gordon Lawyer (Glawyer) on Sunday, April 06, 2008 - 8:14 am:

Doctor Who has received two more nominations for Dramatic Presentation: Short Form. The entries are the two-parter Human Nature/The Family of Blood and Blink. Personally I'm rooting for Blink as it exudes awesomeness and (unlike Father's Day) employs time travel theory which doesn't give me an ulcer.

Get voting, everyone!

The only slight problem being...we're forced to CHOOSE between TENNANT and TATE!! Shouldn't that be outlawed under the Geneva Convention or something? I'm not gonna confess what I did, obviously I BETRAYED one of my Living Gods...

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Thursday, January 21, 2010 - 12:16 pm:

I see we've just won all the National Television Awards, AGAIN. ITV must REALLY be regretting inventing this ritual annual humiliation for themselves.

Aha! '[Tennant] spoke about how much he loves the programme and has done so since childhood, and how he is looking forward to watching as a fan again, not knowing what is going to happen next.'

I've just come up with a FANTASTIC idea about how to punish him for betraying n'abandoning us...

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 - 6:49 pm:

What the **** d'you MEAN, we didn't win any National Television Awards?!

We ALWAYS win the NTA!

I demand a recount!

By Amanda Gordon (Mandy) on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 - 8:13 pm:

Guess we're not the only ones missing Tennant.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Saturday, February 05, 2011 - 5:52 pm:

Ah! God's in her heaven and all's right with the world and that was obviously just an unfortunate blip - Doctor Who has won in five categories at the 2011 SFX Awards - hang on - 'Matt Smith beat ex Dcotor David Tennant'??? God, SOME PEOPLE...

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Sunday, August 21, 2011 - 11:53 am:

Congrats to Pandorica Opens/Big Bang for Who's FIFTH Hugo. It may have taken 'em SEVERAL DECADES to notice The Greatest Thing In Human History (yes, I'm the type to bear a grudge) but they're certainly jumping on our bandwagon NOW.

By Mike Konczewski (Mkonczewski) on Sunday, August 21, 2011 - 6:46 pm:

Considering this is the fifth Best Dramatic Presenation, Short Form "Who" has won, you don't have that much to hold a grudge about. I will admit that prior to the 21st century, the Hugos had a decided US bias.

By Mike Konczewski (Mkonczewski) on Monday, August 22, 2011 - 8:37 am:

Speaking of Worldcons, these beauty was spotted at this year's World SF convention:

I most certainly DO! Forty-two years, it took them! FORTY-TWO YEARS!

these beauty was spotted at this year's World SF convention:

Ahhhhh! Just LOOK at that BLASPHEMOUS little darling!

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Thursday, January 26, 2012 - 4:22 pm:

FIVE Virgin Media TV Awards (including RORY getting the TV Character of the Year, bless him) and TWO National Television Awards (best actor AND best actress)...yup, we've still got it.

By Amanda Gordon (Mandy) on Friday, January 27, 2012 - 6:04 pm:

Well, we've got commercial success anyway. Not sure if that's "it," but I'll take it.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Saturday, January 28, 2012 - 3:13 pm:

It's not just COMMERCIAL success, the NTA were voted for by members of the public, bless their exquisite taste...though they voted for Downton Abbey as Best Drama so should be shot.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Friday, March 02, 2012 - 12:27 pm:

Aaaaaaaand if you've ever wondered what humanity DID to deserve so many alien invasions:

'The Broadcast Awards 2012 saw both Doctor Who Series 6 and Torchwood: Miracle Day nominated for Best International Programme Sales, but lost out to Big Fat Gypsy Weddings.'

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 - 2:31 pm:

'Steven Moffat, John Simm, James Corden and The Sarah Jane Adventures lost out last night in their respective categories at the Royal Television Society Programme Awards, but Moffat's mother-in-law, Beryl Vertue, was given the Lifetime Achievement Award. While representing writers at Associated London Scripts, Vertue negotiated Terry Nation's partial rights deal for the Daleks.' - Grrrrrrrrrreat. TALK about rubbing salt into our gaping wounds. SHE'S the reason New Who had to cough up zillions to use the metal morons, and therefore has the same ******* corridor every time anyone has to run down corridors, AND no rooms in the TARDIS, AND no money to give us a full fourteen episodes EVERY YEAR!!!

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Sunday, May 20, 2012 - 5:00 am:

Moffat got a Bafta; Doctor's Wife got our first Nebula. About time too.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 - 6:20 am:

Don't forget to vote for Torchwood: Miracle Day (Best Drama - alright, so it doesn't DESERVE it but that's beside the point), Who (Best Family Drama), Matt Smith (Best Actor) and Karen Gillan (Best Actress) in the TV Choice Awards, whatever they are:

http://www.tvchoicemagazine.co.uk/tvchoice-awards-2012

By Amanda Gordon (Mandy) on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 - 8:17 pm:

Sorry, Game of Thrones easily won out over Miracle Day. I did vote for Matt over Cumberlatch though.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Thursday, May 24, 2012 - 3:45 am:

Well, that's SOMETHING...

By Callie (Csullivan) on Thursday, May 24, 2012 - 4:42 am:

*looks at Amanda's second sentence*

*opens mouth*

*decides against it*

*closes mouth*

*walks away mumbling ...*

By Amanda Gordon (Mandy) on Thursday, May 24, 2012 - 8:28 am:

I just didn't care for that second series of Sherlock.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Friday, May 25, 2012 - 3:08 am:

Well, Amanda, I guess as of now, you are dead to Callie :-)

Don't forget to vote for Torchwood: Miracle Day (Best Drama - alright, so it doesn't DESERVE it but that's beside the point

No, it's not beside the point, that piece of garbage should never have been nominated in the first place.

Who (Best Family Drama), Matt Smith (Best Actor) and Karen Gillan (Best Actress) in the TV Choice Awards

On the other hand, I would be happy for vote for Doctor Who and its cast.

By Mike Konczewski (Mkonczewski) on Thursday, July 05, 2012 - 10:05 am:

Hey, folks, been a while since I posted, but I wanted to ask a question. I'm going to this year's World Science Fiction Convention in Chicago, which means I get to vote for the 2012 Hugo Awards. "Doctor Who" has three episodes nominated for Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form). While I'm pretty sure I know what I'll vote for, I'm curious to hear what other posters thinks.

The nominees are:
"The Doctor's Wife"
"The Girl Who Waited"
"A Good Man Goes to War"

By Francois Lacombe (Franc0is) on Thursday, July 05, 2012 - 1:58 pm:

I would vote for "The Doctor's Wife".

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Thursday, July 05, 2012 - 2:57 pm:

Mickey! Where have you BEEN!

(Sorry, I call all 'Michaels' and 'Mikes' Mickey these days, in memory of our favourite Idiot.)

Good Man Goes to War! VOTE VOTE VOTE!

By Kevin (Kevin) on Thursday, July 05, 2012 - 7:19 pm:

Wife, on the basis of it being more-or-less standalone (tying into the Doctor Who mythos in general rather than to the season specifically). Waited is more standalone but just as not as good as Wife.

Enjoy your time in my hometown.

Emily, you could call him Michael in honour of our favourite UNIT soldier turned rebel.

By Amanda Gordon (Mandy) on Thursday, July 05, 2012 - 9:03 pm:

NOT The Girl Who Waited. Just a bunch of corridor-running misery that didn't make much sense.

A Good Man Goes to War is, as Kevin noted, too arc-based, although it is excellent.

Got to be The Doctor's Wife. It can be taken as a stand-alone story, but its answers to the basic questions of decades of mythos is outstanding.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Thursday, July 05, 2012 - 9:16 pm:

I'm with Amanda on all her points above.

Definitely Doctor's Wife....

and it's good to see you back here!

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Friday, July 06, 2012 - 2:20 am:

Tell me--what are the other choises???

By Kevin (Kevin) on Friday, July 06, 2012 - 5:13 am:

Emily, you could call him Michael in honour of our favourite UNIT soldier turned rebel.

I meant 'Mike' there.

By Amanda Gordon (Mandy) on Friday, July 06, 2012 - 8:29 pm:

and it's good to see you back here!

Who me? I'm around, just not had much to say recently. We need new stories!

By Amanda Gordon (Mandy) on Friday, July 06, 2012 - 8:32 pm:

Oh, you probably meant Mike. Now I'm crushed....

By Mike Konczewski (Mkonczewski) on Sunday, July 08, 2012 - 6:10 am:

John--the other, non Who Choices are:
The Drunk Tanks' Hugo Award Acceptance Speech (have no idea what that is)
Remedial Chaos Theory, from "Community" (actually a very good episode)

By Mike Konczewski (Mkonczewski) on Friday, July 13, 2012 - 12:04 pm:

I rewatched "Doctor's Wife" and "Good Man", and am leaning towards the first. I think my love of all things Neil Gaiman tipped the scale, even though I thought "GMGTW" has a tighter plot.

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Friday, July 13, 2012 - 11:49 pm:

And my reaction is as follows:having seen neither of the two non-Who nominees, and feeling like I do about all 3 Who choices-- I will pass on this vote.

Just as I cannot vote for something I have not seen, I cannot vote for any of the three Who's put up.

Sorry-that's just how I feel.

By Mike Konczewski (Mkonczewski) on Monday, July 16, 2012 - 7:11 am:

No need to apologize; I support your nonvote. If only more people would choose to opt out of voting after realizing they know nothing about the candidate.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Monday, July 16, 2012 - 12:46 pm:

The candidate's name is DOCTOR WHO, what more could anyone need to know?!

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 - 8:05 pm:

Emily:The candidate's name is DOCTOR WHO, what more could anyone need to know?!

No, Emily--it's not.

The nominees are 5 stories from the last season.

The truth is--the 3 I've seen(the Who ones)--left me cold. I could not vote for any of the three.

The other 2--the ones that I have not seen--can not be picked because I know nothing about either.

If I had seen either, and liked it--that is where my vote would go.

As things stand--this means a no-vote from me.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 - 8:59 am:

Look at it this way: the more prizes Who wins, the more likely it is to continue. The more likely it is to continue, the more likely it is to produce stuff you love, worship and adore. Sooner or later. With a different executive producer and Doctor and suchlike.

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Thursday, July 19, 2012 - 3:36 am:

On the other hand: if they can get high-level awards for efforts that even YOU think could be better--WHY SHOULD THEY TRY HARDER????

The old saying is:don't fix it if it isn't broken.

This award eould say that it isn't brokrn.

Or at least that's my take on it.

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Thursday, July 19, 2012 - 3:39 am:

Or broken even.

AAAARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!

By Mike Konczewski (Mkonczewski) on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 - 7:17 am:

Forget to mention that "Who" writer Paul Cornell is also up for a Hugo. His story "The Copenhagen Interpretation", has been nominated for Best Novellete. He is the first person to be nominated for a Hugo in three different media categories--fiction, Dramatic Presentation ("Father's Day"; "Human Nature/Family of Blood"), and graphic novel ("Captain Britain and MI-13").

The member list says he's attending this year; think I'll try to wheedle an autograph out of him.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Monday, September 03, 2012 - 3:55 am:

Aaaaaaand we have our sixth Hugo. Pity it's for The Doctor's Wife rather than A Good Man Goes to War but hey, we can't have everything. Plus Gaiman's writing another episode which even I - braced for an influx of Chibnalls - regard as exceedingly good news.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Monday, September 03, 2012 - 5:31 pm:

Doctor's Wife was infinitely than Good Man so it was more deserving. And I'm stoked Gaiman is writing another ep.

By Bookwyrme (Ibookwyrme) on Monday, September 03, 2012 - 11:05 pm:

Doctor's Wife was infinitely than Good Man so it was more deserving. And I'm stoked Gaiman is writing another ep.

Absolutely.

And me too!

By Mike Konczewski (Mkonczewski) on Tuesday, September 04, 2012 - 7:41 am:

Next year's Worldcon will be in San Antonio TX; if you join, you can nominate and vote for this year's episodes.

Emily, you should start saving your pennies: the 2014 Worldcon will be held in London at the ExCel Exhibition Center. The GOH will be Iain M Banks. Membership is only 95 pounds, and they are looking for programme suggestions. You should definitely go; I had a blast at Chicon this weekend.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Wednesday, September 05, 2012 - 6:01 am:

NINETY-FIVE QUID! And that boring Ian M Banks!

By Mike Konczewski (Mkonczewski) on Wednesday, September 05, 2012 - 7:12 am:

Yeah, you're right Emily. Don't step out of your Doctor Who comfort zone, and take a risk that you might actually enjoy something. What was I thinking?

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Wednesday, September 05, 2012 - 11:56 am:

Well, QUITE.

By Mike Konczewski (Mkonczewski) on Monday, September 10, 2012 - 7:27 am:

*sigh*

By ScottN (Scottn) on Monday, September 10, 2012 - 5:36 pm:

You forgot the [SARCASM] tags, Mike.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - 5:57 am:

Best Family Drama title last night for the third year in a row at the TV Choice Awards. Morons voted wrong on the Best Actor/Actress front, though.

By Robert Shaw (Robert) on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 - 2:36 pm:

NINETY-FIVE QUID! And that boring Ian M Banks!

But think of the opportunity - all those visiting Americans you can lure into your clutches, and force to watch the 10 greatest episodes of Dr Who, converting them into avid fans. Wear a cyberman costume, and if any of them prove ungrateful, they won't be able to identify you.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Tuesday, October 02, 2012 - 3:16 am:

Huh. Who lost out at the Bafta Cymru Awards - PHILISTINES! MORONS! - except, oddly enough, where The Gunpowder Plot was concerned.

By Mike Konczewski (Mkonczewski) on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 - 10:30 am:

Hey, gang, looking for your Hugo Award related input again. This time around I'm looking for nominations for Hugo awards. The nominees are due by March 10th. To be eligible, the nominated work must have been released or published for the first time in 2012.

I'm specifically looking for nominees for "Best Dramatic Work--Short Form" (aka, a TV episode), but you might know of another Doctor Who related work that you think should be nominated. Full list of categories can be found here:
http://www.thehugoawards.org/hugo-categories/

Let me know what you think!

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 - 8:17 am:

Well, OBVIOUSLY it's gotta be Asylum of the Daleks or Angels Take Manhattan. I prefer Asylum.

By Kate Halprin (Kitten) on Monday, January 21, 2013 - 8:54 am:

Do we have to nominate an episode from last year? It's a bit embarrassing when something a subpar-ish DW episode wins purely because Who fans have a lock on the ballot. 'The Girl in the Fireplace' and 'The Doctor's Wife' are unquestionably award-worthy, 'The Waters of Mars', erm, not so much...

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Monday, January 21, 2013 - 9:33 am:

Waters of Mars is a joy, a JOY I tell you!

By Mike Konczewski (Mkonczewski) on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 - 8:33 pm:

It has to be a work that was published or released during the calendar year 2012, Kate. "Doctor Who" has won every year since it came back on the air, except in 2009.

By Kate Halprin (Kitten) on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 - 4:34 am:

Um, yes, that's why I mentioned that Who had a lock on the ballot, leading to some worthy winners and some winners that are (ahem) not quite so worthy.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 - 5:14 am:

We didn't win in 2009? WHY NOT??

By Kate Halprin (Kitten) on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 - 11:27 am:

Because more people voted for Dr Horrible's Sing-along Blog than 'Silence in the Forest of the Library of Death' or 'Turn Left'?

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 - 12:21 pm:

EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!

By Kate Halprin (Kitten) on Thursday, January 24, 2013 - 10:53 am:

Exterminate the NTA voters first. At least the 2009 Hugo voters went with Joss Whedon.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Thursday, January 24, 2013 - 3:20 pm:

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Tuesday, July 02, 2013 - 8:10 am:

Don't forget to NOT vote for David Tennant in the TV Choice Awards:

http://www.tvchoicemagazine.co.uk/awards/2013

He's prostituting himself in a lesser programme and therefore deserves to get thoroughly beaten by Matt Smith...

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Sunday, April 20, 2014 - 6:34 am:

Name of the Doctor, Day of the Doctor, The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot, An Adventure in Time and Space, Queers Dig Time Lords (reference book), AND The Girl Who Loved Doctor Who (some hitherto unsuspected Cornell graphic novel, apparently) have ALL been nominated for Hugos!

Gods, I hope the Reboot wipes the floor with Name and Day. Though as they're all up against The Rains of Catermere, I'm not enormously optimistic...

By Kate Halprin (Kitten) on Sunday, April 20, 2014 - 6:48 am:

The Hugos use a transferable vote system so any series with multiple episode nominations is likely to pick up enough cumulative votes than a series with but a single nomination. Which is basically how Doctor Who has won this award so often.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Sunday, April 20, 2014 - 7:01 am:

An EXCELLENT and most democratic system!

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Thursday, January 22, 2015 - 12:30 pm:

Beaten in the National Television Awards by Downton Abbey? God, that's humiliating. Still, credit where it's due, at least Downton Abbey has never (one assumes) produced ANYTHING as godawful as In The Forest of the Night.

By Kate Halprin (Kitten) on Saturday, January 24, 2015 - 3:10 pm:

Beaten in the National Television Awards by Downton Abbey? God, that's humiliating.

It could have been worse. At least it wasn't 'Mrs Brown's Boys'*.

(* OK, they say that's not a drama, but I've never laughed at it. At least not since it had Arthur Lucan in it and scripts by Geoffrey 'The Underwater Menace' Orme...)

By Finn Clark (Finnclark) on Saturday, January 24, 2015 - 3:50 pm:

Arthur Lucan

Gallifrey Base: 'The International Association of Media Tie-In Writers is to honour Doctor Who's former script editor Terrance Dicks with the 2015 Faust Award.

The association is made up of writers of original tie-in novels, comic books and short stories based on existing characters from movie, TV series, books, games, and cartoons, and of novelisations based on screenplays for movies and TV shows.

The award is for a lifetime achievement in the genre and to mark the extensive contribution to the industry Dicks has made during his long career.' - what, and they've ONLY JUST got round to giving it to TERRANCE DICKS? Surely it should AUTOMATICALLY go to Terrance Dicks EVERY year (even after he's DEAD)?

And what's with naming it after a bloke who sold his soul to the Devil...?

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Wednesday, January 06, 2016 - 12:32 pm:

Some sick freak seems to have forgotten to nominate Peter Capaldi for Best Actor, but nonetheless we must all vote for Who in the Best Drama category at the National Television Awards.

By Kate Halprin (Kitten) on Thursday, January 07, 2016 - 3:30 am:

Some sick freak seems to have forgotten to nominate Peter Capaldi for Best Actor

As the nominees are decided by an earlier vote, we can probably blame fans for not voting often enough or possibly choosing Mark Rylance instead.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Thursday, January 07, 2016 - 3:43 am:

No Fan would commit such an act of treason!

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Thursday, January 21, 2016 - 11:17 am:

Downton ******* Abbey?

Ah well, I suppose we can afford to be gracious.

Downton's DEAD.

Who is very much alive.

Well, sort of alive, anyway.

By Kate Halprin (Kitten) on Friday, January 22, 2016 - 8:26 am:

There are already people clamouring for Downton to be brought back.

Are they going to bring out a song called Aristocrats in Distress? Is FOX going to make a Downton telemovie?

By Kate Halprin (Kitten) on Friday, January 22, 2016 - 9:41 am:

Downton is very much an example of a successful show quitting while it was ahead. It would only need desperate measures like that if it were to have dragged on for a few years longer, becoming tired and embarrassing, losing all its viewers, and featuring entire episodes written purely so that its production team could have a nice holiday in Spain.

Gallifrey Base: 'The first round of ballots have been issued for this year's Television Academy's renowned Emmys Awards, and for the first time in its 53 year history Doctor Who has been represented as Peter Capaldi has been listed within the Best Drama Actor category for his performance as the Doctor!' - I thought we won EVERYTHING in our Golden (i.e. Russell T God) Age? What the hell do these Emmys things think they ARE!

By Kate Halprin (Kitten) on Saturday, June 18, 2016 - 9:36 am:

I believe that Doctor Who hasn't previously been eligible for the Emmys for arcane nationality-related reasons.

Or at least this is what Doctor Who fans tell themselves to explain why it hasn't been nominated before. Heaven knows what excuse we'll come up with this time.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Saturday, July 02, 2016 - 4:56 pm:

Don't forget to vote for Capaldi n'Who in the TV Choice Awards.

By Francois Lacombe (Franc0is) on Sunday, July 03, 2016 - 4:38 am:

Done.

I also had to vote for a bunch of other people and shows, most of which I am unfamiliar with, but I don't think my one vote will skew the results too much.

By Kate Halprin (Kitten) on Monday, July 04, 2016 - 4:42 am:

You could just have skipped those categories.

By Francois Lacombe (Franc0is) on Sunday, December 25, 2016 - 11:08 am:

I'm not too sure where to put this, but here seems appropriate.

Space Channel has done its annual Top 30 Hottest Sci-Fi Stars list. Sharing the number 7 spot are Peter Capaldi and Pearl Mackie, and at number 5 is current Rogue One star Felicity Jones, who played Robina Redmond in the 2008 episode The Unicorn and the Wasp.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 - 2:59 am:

TV Choice Awards - don't forget to vote for Best Family Show, Best Actor and Best Actress - you can skip the rest.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 - 5:34 am:

Back in 2007 the Ursa Major Awards

Best Anthropomorphic Dramatic Short Work or Series

Gridlock (Doctor Who episode)

(BBC1; series 3, episode 3, April 14)

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 - 6:03 am:

Well, I should hope so too...

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 - 2:45 pm:

Yes...

One of the links wasn't working, but it looks like the episode was up against 3 commercials and 2 seasons of a childrens show.

(Should we be cheering at the idea of the Doctor punching out Shaun the Sheep? ;-)

Of the two commercials still viewable, the Jeep one wasn't bad, and, while technically impressive, the Orangina ad made me wonder what kind of drugs the makers were using.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 - 3:25 pm:

Should we be cheering at the idea of the Doctor punching out Shaun the Sheep?

I'll take any victory we can get...

By Kate Halprin (Kitten) on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 - 2:19 am:

Should we be cheering at the idea of the Doctor punching out Shaun the Sheep?

'Shaun the Sheep' is much-loved and globally famous, made his debut in an Oscar winning short film (by Bob Baker!) and has had his own hit feature film plus a rather more successful spinoff than 'Class'. Beating him is a big deal.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 - 3:05 am:

Good god.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Friday, October 20, 2017 - 5:09 pm:

Ahh, we've just won the Ally Award for LGBT inclusiveness. As well we should, even if Himself IS a raving heterosexual these days. (Though possibly not for much longer, if his habit of fancying any River/Clara/Marilyn/Liz One/Cleopatra who crosses his path survives the sex-change...)

Pearl Mackie: 'I met a couple of young girls who were BAME, and talked to me about how watching Bill on Doctor Who enabled them to come out and feel comfortable with their own sexuality' - that's wonderful, but did they JUST NOT NOTICE that Bill had failed to come out to her own MOTHER?

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Saturday, January 12, 2019 - 5:15 am:

Given Who's current slightly-precarious position, we really really need to win some National Television Awards so could all Brits go vote Who and JODIE! and, well, you can even vote for Bradley Walsh and Bonnie Langford in non-Who-related categories if you wish...

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 - 3:31 am:

Well, we didn't get any NTAs dammit but we did get a BAFTA Visionary Arts Organisation Award for Television Show of the Year for Rosa!

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Friday, April 05, 2019 - 6:44 am:

A nomination from the Hugo's for Demons of the Punjab.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Friday, April 05, 2019 - 6:50 am:

Rosa as well, I see, which makes more sense, if not as much sense as It Takes You Away would have made, dammit...

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Friday, April 05, 2019 - 2:34 pm:

Huh? Don't remember seeing Rosa when I posted. Did I just miss it or was it posted after I posted the link?

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Sunday, April 07, 2019 - 8:37 am:

No idea, but Rosa's also been nominated for a BAFTA for Must-See Moment and those of us who are British CAN VOTE!

Alright, I've absolutely no idea why 'Historical Person Famous For Keeping Arse Plonked On Seat Actually Keeps Arse Plonked On Seat' is more of a shock for the BAFTA-people than, say, Female!!!! Doctor Blowing Kisses At Universe In Shape Of A Frog, but let's not quibble, let's just do our democratic duty.

Of course, Virgin have completely screwed up by conflating two completely separate scenes ('the Doctor and her companions make sure historical moments remain' v 'After paying her bus fare, the driver stops Rosa walking through the bus towards the ‘coloured’ section, telling her to use the rear door. As she’s leaving, Rosa momentarily sits in a ‘white’ seat to pick her purse. Once she’s disembarked, the bus pulls away before she’s able to re-enter') but, again, Chibbers-Who isn't in a position to quibble, WE NEED MORE AWARDS.

Radio Times Awards

Who must be voted for IMMEDIATELY in Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy!

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Sunday, February 07, 2021 - 5:10 pm:

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict Baby Yoda curb-stomping Jodie here.

Sorry, Emily, but I think the Mandolorian fans are more enthusiastic than the Who fans.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Monday, February 08, 2021 - 3:43 am:

DIE, BABY YODA, DIE!

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Monday, February 08, 2021 - 2:48 pm:

DIE, DOCTOR WHO, DIE! (However, due to his multiple regenerations that could take a very long time.)

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Monday, February 08, 2021 - 3:01 pm:

Charles, I hope you are wearing your running shoes....

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Monday, February 08, 2021 - 3:06 pm:

Yeah, you don't use 'his' for the Doctor any more...

And who is this 'Doctor Who' whereof you speak?

You are WOTAN and I claim my five pounds.

Also two David Tennant vehicles have won awards with Des for Best Drama and Staged for Best Comedy.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Thursday, March 11, 2021 - 7:12 am:

Yup, still got it.

So much for Baby Yoda...

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Saturday, March 27, 2021 - 3:59 am:

Congrats to "Stranded 1" for winning the Audie Award for best audio drama. More here

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, March 27, 2021 - 5:30 am:

So much for Baby Yoda

Could have been worse. They could have done Baby Jar-Jar Binks*

*Obligatory Emily Explanation: Jar-Jar Binks was a character introduced in the Star Wars prequels. To say that the fans loathed him would be an understatement.

I don't think even dear old Adders garnered that much hate.

It is up against Stargirl, the US version of Ghosts, La Brea, Riverdale and Shining Vale.

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Friday, August 19, 2022 - 12:41 am:

Only one question here.

Why would they think that Riverdale is a fantasy?

I have only one question here.

Why would they think that Riverdale is a fantasy?

By Matthew See (Matthew_see) on Friday, August 19, 2022 - 12:52 am:

I have been watching Riverdale up to the penultimate episode of the previous season and its storylines includes witchcraft and a parallel universe.

By John E. Porteous (Jep) on Saturday, August 20, 2022 - 3:15 am:

I didn't know that- I lost track after the first season.

I'm reposting this along with the observation that the most recent Downton film has a subplot that allowed the production team to have a nice holiday in the south of France.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Thursday, October 27, 2022 - 10:02 am:

….and not for the first time either did they travel to a distant locale…
