ARGH! I wrote my thoughts on it but lost my internet connection without copying the message (which I would normally do on a public wireless), got a connection error and can't go back.
Oh yippe. Nevermind. Found it.
Okay, hardly a surprise that Rose was #1 nor that Sarah was #2 (being the only companion to pop up multiple times after her initial departure).
I love the Brig, but he became too much of a bumbling idiot (compared to his early stories) for me to place him that high. Leela's stoopid departure ruined her for me, and I would have liked to see the Pygmalion aspect developed better than it was.Turlough was too inconsistently handled by the writers (wanting to go to his home planet in one story and afraid of it in another), showing that the writers didn't flesh out his backstory until the end, but I can't complain about him placing at the bottom on the list. Jo was an okay companion, but it was mainly her chemistry with Pertwee that worked.
I'm not denying any character's right to be called a companion, but some are more companionish than others: there was not a River Song era, for example, as there was a Leela era, so it's great that she made the list at all, and I guess this is why Tegan would be higher than her. Presumably this is why Amy is higher than Capt Jack (or Ace for that matter).
And nothing against Polly, but how the hell did she make the cut?
I'm a Donna Noble fan, myself. She had a maturity which most of his companions lacked, excepting the Brigadier and Wilf. One gets a little tired of adolescents all the time. Of course, the show is targeted at pre-teens so perhaps I should expect that.
WHERE IS NYSSA!?!?!
There, there, Tim. The list is obviously inexplicable on a number of levels.
You got that right!
And the answer to Tim's question is that Nyssa was No21...
(Mind you, as Katy Manning on her website, was openly pleading for her fans to vote for Jo Grant, in said poll, one can argue for a element of "ballot box stuffing" being present, & skewing the poll as a result...).
As for the first 6, the stories involving them are either in syndication on "Freeview" Digital Terrestrial T.V, or Digital Satellite T.V...
In the case of Sarah-Jane Smith & K-9, their respective spin-off series are currently being shown on U.K T.V...
Poor Nyssa, in the words of Maxwell Smart: Missed by THAT much!
Yeah, well, that's Nyssa for you: the eternal victim. She probably wouldn't be able to COPE if she'd topped the poll - her life just isn't supposed to be like that...
The poll posted above was not the final published version, however...
In the Final version of said poll, Nyssa was 18th, one place above Zoe, who was in 19th place above Romana I & Rory Williams...
(Adric came in at joint 28th place with Mickey Smith, while Mel came in at joint 30th place with Mike Yates & Susan...).
Kamelion came in last place, at no 36...
Sarah Jane Smith gets my vote.
Smart AND sexy
I can only go so far in defending Susan, but tying with Mel is a fate worse than she deserves. Ditto Yates. Hell, Kamelion deserves better.
Susan got one of the best send-offs ever, and Yates had more character development than any recurring UNIT figure, and more than most old series companions. Mel had no redeeming qualities except possibly sparing us an introductory episode. (Or, arguably, being so bottom-of-the-barrel that the writers could see the need for somoene like Ace.)
Mark, can you post or link the whole list of results?
MICKEY? What have people got against poor darling Mickey-the-idiot???
I can understand Kamelion. Sure, the idea he's worse than Mel is, to put it mildly, sorely mistaken, but I doubt most people even THINK of him as a Companion.
As requested, here is the final version of the poll, as printed in Radio Times- The Companions book...

Leela's stoopid departure ruined her for me
You're lucky it was just her stoopid departure, her stoopid Gallifrey and Companion Chronicle audios didn't help me ONE BIT. (I s'pose her Fourth Doctor audios aren't too terrible. One of 'em even has her fall in lurve (naturally, he promptly croaks), presumably in an attempt to imply that she shouldn't be blamed too much for Andred as he's obviously the rebound guy.)
Radio Times Doctor Poll.
I've no objection to the first couple of entries - basically JODIE! n'Tennant as joint winners, in MY interpretation - but after that it gets a bit...weird. CAPALDI'S a more beloved Doctor than TOM BAKER?
And OUCH but the poor old 1980s...
2, 3, 4 are just Thirteen, Twelve, & Eleven, so basically people thinking backwards about current Doctors. Tennent was just really popular as was Tom, but most new series viewers wouldn't be too familiar with him, so he's down at 5.
Hartnell is the oddball. Before the new series I don't remember him ranking very high in popular Doctor polls, so what happened to boost him up?
They watched David Bradley being a male chauvinist pig and thought 'Hmm...Maybe Hartnell isn't that bad after all...?'
Remember that much of the current Who audience is comprised of younger people who only know Doctor Who through the Modern series.
Given that, it's a given that the NuWho Doctor's will score higher than the old ones.
They watched David Bradley being a male chauvinist pig and thought
Men: That looks like fun!
Women: I'll get your tea, dear.
;-)
*Hefts teapot*
One lump or two...dear?
I've always wondered if that's the actual reason sugar cubes are called "lumps".
Most people born after 1995 probably wouldn't watch Classic Who if it were on the only channel their televisions could get.
If they did, they would probably point and laugh at the F/X and such.
