Army of Death

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Doctor Who: Audios: Eighth Doctor: Army of Death
Synopsis: President Karnex of Stronghaven and President Harman of Garrak are the best of friends...until mad cultist Harman blows up his own city-state and Karnex promptly gets shot. Oh, wait - Harman was innocent, Karnex destroyed Garrak and arranged his own death to be reborn as the Bone Lord - having cloned his soul in a psychic cloud and built an effigy of himself from skeletons with the souls of his victims still trapped inside them. Whereupon rebel Nia uses his machinery to clone her own soul, fights him for possession of the Bone Lord...and walks it over a cliff.

Thoughts: No Doctor would say anything as stupid as 'Mary, you know you are always perfectly safe with me.' Why doesn't Vallan recognise his own boss's voice? Why doesn't the Doctor let him finish any of his sentences - can he not TELL Vallan is trying to confess something VERY IMPORTANT? Even the Doctor's questioning the bizarreness of the President's tete-a-tete with his prisoner. It takes THREE WEEKS and a neighbour blowing up for a city with ten generations of serene civilisation behind it to start threatening to hack off the arms of prisoners if they don't answer questions?

That new theme music has to be heard to be believed. (Actually I've heard it several times and STILL don't believe it.)

Since when does the Doctor say things like 'Are you decent?' Since when has he understood such notions? Certainly not when stripping off in front of Amy or clambering into bed with Martha.

So where are all these unwanted immigrants being expelled TO, exactly?

Why does Meera keep her origin such a secret for decades - in the ultra-civilised days when surely it wouldn't matter?

Would living in perpetual twilight really result in such a delightful civilisation? Or a seriously depressed one?

Mary faces the shameful truth...she fancies the Doctor!! Yeah, like THAT hasn't been done before. And why is she writing in her diary even when being dragged off as a hostage?

Why doesn't the Doctor just truthfully answer the interrogator's questions before it comes to the arm-removal stuff?

'As far as Stronghaven's concerned, I was born and raised here.' 'Let's hope it stays that way. If anyone ever discovered that I'd made an exception for you, I'd be torn from office and you'd be detained and expelled like all the other Garrak-born.' 'No one knows. I moved here pre-school...' - could these guys not find a more SUBTLE way to info-dump to each other?

'Dim the lights.' 'Ambient luminescence decreasing' - wouldn't you be able to TELL? Wouldn't being TOLD this all the time get HIGHLY IRRITATING? Anyone would think the computer KNOWS it's on audio...

'These shoes are hardly appropriate for hiking' - why doesn't Mary wear proper shoes? Doesn't she realise by now there'll be running down corridors and suchlike?

Why does Nia assume that the Doctor and Mary are married? It's hardly a no-sex-before-marriage civilisation, given what's going on between the President and Meera.

Why does no one think that thermal imaging doesn't work on skeletons a bit earlier?

Which part of 'Doctor, I need to speak to you urgently!' did he just not GET? And why not just ASK Vallan why he deliberately left his city defenceless?

Why doesn't the Doctor even try to work out Karnex's encryption code? Or at least tell security to blow that door open sooner?

Those Fly-bots are a bit too useful - like flying K9s whose batteries don't go flat.

Mary considers herself skilled only at avoiding her own emotions. Since when! She's been babbling on about Percy and/or the Doctor being her bloody SOUL-MATES, for heaven's sake!

'They're with the boss' - Tox. 'And who might HE be' - how DARE the Doc make sexist assumptions!

THE DOCTOR is obsessing about the great number-plate on his flying car?? Since when was he a reincarnation of Jeremy Clarkson?

Nia taking the Doctor's place in the chair to nobly self-sacrifice herself is all a bit River Song-ish.

McGann sounds positively suicidal in the CD extras - his voice is INCREDIBLY slow and low.

'I have that feeling again. A giddy delight. I wonder what awaits us on the planet Traxine' - hideous amounts of death and destruction, OBVIOUSLY, you cretin.

Why does Meera call the President 'John' straight after saying she has to call him 'President' in private in case the guard outside hears?

Why does the Doctor tell Mary to 'Run!'? In what way does he think she'll be safer running through an army of skeletons on her way to a destroyed city with with only a really murderous fugitive for (live) company? Wouldn't being whisked off to Stronhaven - as HE is being - be a MUCH better option - sure, they'd be prisoners but hey, she's a prisoner already and have I mentioned ARMY OF SKELETONS?

Why the HELL does the Doctor TELL his guard-bots that he's going for a stroll?

'Since you're asking nicely and not threatening to remove one of my appendages I'll tell you' - look, I know the Doctor doesn't take well to torture, or threats thereof, but FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE! Was he really going to get an arm ripped off out of PRINCIPLE? What exactly is WRONG with admitting to a colony of eighth-generation Earth-settlers that you arrived on their planet in your ship?

'Quite a persecution complex you've got there' Mary tells the HUNTED FUGITIVE.

The President and Meera are unable to comprehend that the Doctor is a stranger not on their central register? Does this planet not have TOURISTS?

'Playing with biological lifespans is never a good idea' lectures THE GUY WITH THE RASSILON IMPRIMATUR whilst wearing HIS EIGHTH FACE.

'That's how every quest for the Elixir of Life begins' claims the Doctor, after it's pointed out to him that they just want an extension of their existences. Not on Karn it didn't.

Mary SIGNS each diary entry?

What kind of cretin would be hopeful of finding her husband in a CITY THAT'S BEEN UTTERLY OBLITERATED?

'Why do despots always bury themselves in the earth' - they do?

How come the two Presidents were STILL seemingly on 'perfect terms' AFTER the rumours started about one of 'em being a death-cult lunatic?

Since when does the Doctor beg a Companion to stay after she announces her departure - let alone if she's a) a historical figure and b) announced her feelings for him?

God, I miss Death and the Queen.

Big Finish say in DWM that 'we trod water with the Mary Shelley trilogy' which I suspect is BF-speak for admitting it was total .
