The Censor's Knife (DW overseas)

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Doctor Who: Ask the Matrix: The Censor's Knife (DW overseas)

It's interesting reading about the Australian and NZ censors in the 1960s and '70s. Apart from DW, they banned depictions of homosexuality, anything which challenged the view that women should stay in the kitchen, anything that challenged the supremacy of Christianity, and, of course, they forbade depiction of interracial relationships.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Friday, April 04, 2014 - 7:17 pm:

So they didn't have to censor much of DW then.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, April 05, 2014 - 5:26 am:

they banned depictions of homosexuality

Putin would have loved these people.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Friday, April 11, 2014 - 5:05 am:

No wonder Australia's such a chauvinistic nightmare they practically hounded their own Prime Minister out of office for being a woman.

Still...the more censor cuts there were, the more little snippets of Hartnell and Troughton Who we are blessed with!

Admittedly it's a slight betrayal of the sisterhood to think that a few minutes of black-and-white goodness is worth the suffering of millions of women but hey - I just can't help myself...

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Friday, April 11, 2014 - 5:20 am:

Well, this happened decades ago, in the primitive 20th Century.

By Judi Jeffreys (Judibug) on Friday, April 11, 2014 - 5:29 am:

in NZ, most of the things banned by the bigots of the 60s and 70s are still officially banned as there hasn't been a proper review/unbanning effort.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Friday, April 11, 2014 - 4:34 pm:

Emily- don't imply sexism when you gave absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Gillard was removed because she was incompetent. Her popularity was lower than Colin Baker's.

Stick to Who and don't try and be a political expert.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Friday, April 11, 2014 - 5:16 pm:

Of course, I know nothing of politics.

I mean, aside from having been a political researcher for the past eighteen years.

And obviously the relentless misogynistic bile directed towards Gillard was a figment of my crazed bra-burning imagination. It's not as if I've got any EVIDENCE...

Oh wait!

Yeah yeah- one speech in parliament.

Perfectly timed to deflect the heat from her. The fact is that everytime she was criticised it became about her sex. No. It's about how stupid and moronic your polocies. You don't live here so don't presume to judge our country or the way tings are down here.

Just like I don't presume to know all the ins and out of your limp government or the US political scene.

By Graham Nealon (Graham) on Friday, April 11, 2014 - 8:56 pm:

Just a reminder that Rodney does not speak for all Australians - and that this is a board far more enjoyable when people aren't spouting their real-world political positions. There's plenty of other places on the internet for that.

'The Goodies' was also censored here in the Seventies. When they toured the stage show a few years ago and showed the clips that had been cut no-one could work out what possible reason there was for having done so.

It would be interesting to see a few articles on the cuts and the rationale behind them.

By Judi Jeffreys (Judibug) on Friday, April 11, 2014 - 9:38 pm:

the rationale is simply because the Censors/Classifiers are a lot more conservative than most Australians.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, April 12, 2014 - 5:09 am:

I gotta go with Rodney on this one. He lives in Australia and probably has better knowledge of the political situation there.

The gender card would not have been played had Gillard been a man. There are bumbling politicians that have both X and Y chromosomes.

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Saturday, April 12, 2014 - 5:59 am:

Yes you are right Graham- and I'm sorry to have gone on my high horse. I try to remain friendly here and keep it on topic, just a little angered that our moderator who has never set foot in this country believes she is somehow an expert on our politics and politician. Google and the internet don't really give you the full picture.

BUT in the spirit on keeping things friendly I'll just move on.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Saturday, April 12, 2014 - 6:51 am:

You have nothing to be sorry about, Rodney, IMHO.

By Judi Jeffreys (Judibug) on Saturday, April 26, 2014 - 7:41 am:

Tony Abbott must be like Salamander then?

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Saturday, April 26, 2014 - 5:17 pm:

No, he wears budgie smugglers, not spanish frills.

By Judi Jeffreys (Judibug) on Sunday, April 27, 2014 - 9:49 am:

politically he's more like Soldeed. When he was a student, he punched the wall beside a female political rival's head to try and intimidate her.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Friday, May 02, 2014 - 5:08 am:

Does he praise Lord Nimon?

By Natalie Salat (Jjeffreys_mod) on Wednesday, August 09, 2017 - 10:00 pm:

The person who shot the Australian cine footage of missing episodes doesn't want to be publically identified, which is fair enough, given what wacko fans would do to he/she thinking they
must" have full episodes etc etc.
