Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Doctor Who: Ask the Matrix: Emily recommends.....
By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Saturday, July 18, 2020 - 3:55 am:

You know, there are so many Doctor Who audios (especially) that Emily has endured so we don't have to and I think we should have a one stop shop for what Emily considers the best of Big Finish. That way if any of us feel like dipping our toes into the BF pond (or is it an ocean by now?) we know where to start....

This board is yours old girl!

I'd like to know what's the best BF Cyberman story.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Saturday, July 18, 2020 - 4:46 am:

Oh, besides Spare Parts. Already have that.

It's an ocean PLANET. Tip your toes in and you'll drown before you ever see another speck of land. DON'T DO IT, PEOPLE!

(Yes, since you ask, I'm very happy with Nitcentral's average-of-13-posts-per-audio-thread and no longer need to attempt to bully people into listening so they can BLOODY SAY SOMETHING. Thanks to a certain debate about feminism in the Prison in Space section even Troughton is no longer being insulted with a measly average of three or four posts, though it has to be said, Two, Seven and Twelve are still drastically lagging behind their other selves, audio-wise...)

This board is yours old girl!

*Look of consternation*

Are we...developing a Sarah-and-Harry-style relationship, after all these years? Should I be threatening to spit in your eye or something?

I'd like to know what's the best BF Cyberman story.

Wouldn't we all.

Big Finish Cybermen stories feel like they're on some particularly rubbish time-loop.

Original Sin is the best I can do, it's a perfectly-good adaptation of an excellent novel. Alright, strictly speaking it doesn't actually have any Cybermen in it but hey, the baddie is, well, don't want to give anything away but it counts as a Cyber-story, OK?

Best story from a Big Finish spinoff series?

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Friday, August 07, 2020 - 10:28 am:

Ooh! No one single thing that will blow your mind but:

Companion Chronicles: The Scorchies. Darling Jo! Darling Scorchies! Adorable slagging-off-of-Space-1999! Last Post is also rather good.

Torchwood: The Hope. Very, very...impactful. And if you like that you'll probably like Corpse Day as well. You'll want to throw up afterwards but hey, that's the sign of a good audio...isn't it...Aliens Among Us and God Among Us very much have their ups and downs but what they also have is an authentic Russell-T-God-flavour.

Bernice Summerfield: Oh No It Isn't! (for the Brig as a pantomime cat, not for the actual plot, obviously). The Winning Side (unfortunately part of a box set so not really worth it). And Venus Mantrap is good lighthearted fun.

UNIT: Breach of Trust. Unfortunately part of a box set and also probably would only qualify as an average audio if only every single other UNIT CD wasn't so utterly...pointless.

Jago & Litefoot: School of Blood (again, tragically part of a box set).

River Song: Pretty much all of high quality (give or take Whodunnit?) but no one episode is springing to mind...ah, maybe The Bekdel Test. Missy and River are of course sublime together.

War Master: possibly The Star Man, and the rest of the box set is perfectly bearable.

Missy: Divorced Beheaded Regenerated.

The Lives of Captain Jack: Piece of Mind's the best but there are several other pretty good ones.

The Sins of Captain John: actually the whole box set is rather fun, if not earth-shattering.

And then...it depends. Love Rose and Donna? Then get their box sets. Only one bad episode apiece and god it's SO GOOD to hear them again. Love Jenny? Fine! No standouts but no duds either for her box set. Love Susan? Her first couple of eps are rather good. Love Novice Hame? Do not under any circumstances ruin your love with Tales From New Earth.

I concur with Emily on River Song- Whilst not every episode is a brilliant I find they are consistently above average. I don't think you'll go wrong there.

I'm going to also recommend the First Doctor Adventures (certainly the first three volumes anyway) with David Bradley. I;m not sure how you'll feel about the voices of the females in it but I think the stories are actually quite enjoyable.

And while we're on fake Doctors- Tim Treloar's Third Doctor adventures are worth a listen. The one with Jon Culshaw playing the Brig alongside Caroline John's daughter playing Liz Shaw (genuinely can't remember the title now) was pretty darn good.

A lot more recommendations that I expected, thanks. Will check some of these out.

I didn't include any of those cos I don't regard them as spin-offs. I'd certainly recommend The Invention of Death/The Barbarians and the Samurai set.

But you've gotta be warned, when Rodney says 'I;m not sure how you'll feel about the voices of the females in it' what he MEANS is Fake-Susan and Fake-Barbara are unspeakable abominations.

Yup, Primord's the one to go for, but unfortunately it's paired up with A Scream of Ghosts. Well, SOME people love Scream's ultra-tradness, I suppose...

75% off Seven with Ace audios. Any recommendations here?

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Monday, August 24, 2020 - 1:41 am:

Bang-Bang-a-Boom!, Flip Flop, Protect and Survive, A Death in the Family. (Some of those are with Mel but they seem very cheap too.)

By Rodney Hrvatin (Rhrvatin) on Wednesday, September 09, 2020 - 3:08 pm:

Big Finish sale of Janet Fielding audios. Any recommendations?

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Wednesday, September 09, 2020 - 3:29 pm:

I quite like The Elite I s'pose.

(I quite like one or two others but they're not worth £6.49.)

Get the ones you like.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Wednesday, December 09, 2020 - 8:09 pm:

What are the best Tom Baker stories? I have only Multi-Doc stories with him.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Thursday, December 10, 2020 - 3:04 am:

The Foe From the Future/The Valley of Death box set (though I'm not saying it's worth THAT price).

The Auntie Matter (if you like P G Wodehouse).

The Paradox Planet/Legacy of Death (wouldn't have stood out so much if Tom had got a few more decent stories, but as it is...)

Kill the Doctor/The Age of Sutekh (admittedly more because I thought I SHOULD love it than because I actually did).

The Sinestran Kill (Tom is just having SUCH FUN with his new Compnaion).

The Iron Legion (comes with The Star Beast but that's not bad either).

None of them are worthy of Tom but I live in hope that one day...

By Kevin (Kevin) on Friday, December 11, 2020 - 11:21 pm:

Yikes! USD45 for the download?
I was set to consider it despite your warning, but yeah, not at that price.

By Emily Carter (Emily) on Saturday, December 12, 2020 - 3:16 am:

It's forty-five QUID for a British download (and £55 for the CDs)...same as the Philip Hinchcliffe Presents box set, the guy obviously thinks a LOT of himself.
