Flight to Atlantica

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Supermarionation: Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons: Flight to Atlantica
By Chris Dale on Saturday, May 19, 2001 - 1:28 pm:

This episode establishes that Spectrum's first anniversary falls on July 10th. This means that Spectrum has been operating for ONE YEAR up to this point. Yet July 10th is given as the date in 'Winged Assassin' and in 'Treble Cross', both of which occured before this episode. So they must have had the big celebration, whilst Major Gravener was involved in a car crash and the Delta Tango Airliner was shot down, Scarlet must have been trying to save the Director General of the UAR, been flown back to Cloudbase, recovered VERY quickly to be out again to resolve the Unity City crisis, with Captain Blue (who would be feeling the effects of mystronised champagne by now) whilst Colonel White, Captain Ochre and Lt Green organised a plan for dealing the wreck approaching Atlantica, so that Blue and Ochre could deal with that when Blue got back to Cloudbase. Pretty hectic day I'd say.

The control building at Maxwell Field is the Zero-X Martian Exploration Centre control building at Glenn Field in Thunderbirds Are Go

Captain Ochre wakes up just before he and Blue eject, judging from one shot that is seen just after the bomber scrapes over the ocean surface.

I've just found out that July 10th was Tony Barwicks birthday, that's why he used it so much. July 10th was also used in Crater 101, July 10th 2058 was the date when the Neptune probe was launched and I haven't noticed July 10th in Winged Assassin in what part of the episode does it state July 10th?

Agent 042 says so just before Scarlet and Blue meet him.

And Don't Forget Treble Cross

By Adam on Wednesday, February 20, 2002 - 7:14 am:

I didn't mention Treble Cross because Chris Dale mentioned Winged Assassin, Flight to Atlantica and Treble Cross but not Crater 101 so I mentioned Crater 101.

I did see somewhere that a date was used more than once. This mention of 10/7 has reminded me of the date in question. This suggests that the events of the series lasted more than a year. I suppose it's C21's 47.

It was fun to hear Ochre and Blue groovin' to "Dangerous Game" while they were flying about in their daze...

I loved this episode because it gave the characters a chance to be goofy! LOL

Come on! Did these people really think that they could throw a party on Cloudbase without Col. White finding out? And why did they feel that they had to sneak around? Is White such an old grump that they simply assumed that he wouldn't want to celebrate such an important anniversary?

Granted, the Mysterons contaminated the faux champagne right there at the party, but did they think to analyze this anonymous donation before drinking it? Under the circumstances, I would think that Spectrum would be suspicious of ANYTHING being sent to Cloudbase without proper authorization. (BTW, just who did receive the anonymous contribution without White knowing about it?)

Would Scarlet have reacted to the champagne the same way that the others did? Would it have affected him at all?

It suddenly occurred to me--what happened to all of the other Spectrum personnel? Cloudbase is huge--it can't possibly operate with only a handful of Captains and Angels and one Colonel, especially since they are always rushing off to save the world. Who looks after Cloudbase and keeps it running? At the end of the episode, Col. White tells them that Cloudbase is fully manned, with an Angel (Symphony) on standby and other systems being watched.

So...did the other personnel have their own party, "below decks" so to speak? Or did Col. White and Captain Scarlet consider them useless for the emergency?

I do wonder what the other two Angels were doing during their time of "general irresponsibility"?

It would have been interesting if they had shown Captain Scarlet reacting more to the situation. After all, he had been responsible for arranging the party; surely he would feel himself to blame for what happened.

BTW, Scarlet had said that the faux champagne had been cleared through Security. Just how could they properly check it without opening it up and spoiling the fizz?

The military lets itself get too intimidated by Spectrum. Both officers noted that Captains Blue and Ochre seemed unfit for duty--but they're from Spectrum, so it must be all right.

They showed Captain Black simply crumpling up the real grid reference and dropping it to the floor. What if someone had walked by, picked it up, and taken a look at it?

It would have been nice if they had had time to show (or tell) that Col. White had locked down Cloudbase. Otherwise, they might have returned to find that Lt. Green had decided to take Cloudbase out for a joyride....

Just when did someone arrange to have a crop of champagne made under the Captain Scarlet label? Or did Col. White arrange to relabel some champagne just for fun?
