Pilot (AKA The Mysterons)

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Supermarionation: Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons: Pilot (AKA The Mysterons)
By Chris Dale on Tuesday, September 04, 2001 - 2:13 pm:

So, how does having Captain Brown explode next to the world president fullfil the Mysteron plan that the must have him ALIVE?

By D.K. Henderson on Thursday, September 06, 2001 - 5:43 am:

I suppose they changed their minds after their first attempt failed.

By Andrew on Saturday, September 15, 2001 - 6:14 am:

And how does falling of a car park make people indestructable?

By DJU on Saturday, September 15, 2001 - 6:42 am:

well when he was re-created by the mysterons he was indestructible but when he fell from the london car vu the hold on the mysteron duplicate of scarlet was broken thus freeing him and he kept the power of retro-metabolism

By Callie Sullivan on Saturday, September 15, 2001 - 11:10 am:

I didn't get to see the entire episode when it was shown on Monday as I got in late from work, but the part that puzzled me was when Captain Blue went to get the SPV (or whatever it was called). The guy at the petrol station asked, "What's it like facing backwards and driving look at a screen?" My question was, "Why do you face backwards and drive looking at a screen?" What's the point? Why is this a more efficient way of driving?

One thing that did impress me was how much better they control the puppets than in Thunderbirds. I particularly noticed it when Captain Scarlet was driving up the circular ramp to the observation platform - the position of the President's hands and arms as he braced himself was superb.

By Phillip Culley (Pculley) on Sunday, September 16, 2001 - 5:57 am:

As far as I know, the theory behind backward driving is so that if the SPV crashes, the chair will take the impact of the crash rather than the driver going into the control column. Given the speed the SPV will be travelling at (I once read about 200mph), I should think this makes a lot of sense. Whether it would actually make a difference will have to wait till someone decides to build one :)

By Andrew on Sunday, September 16, 2001 - 3:18 pm:

Allso is the SPV not armered a the front so no windows can be put in - so a tv monitor has to be used.

By Richard Davies on Tuesday, September 18, 2001 - 2:31 pm:

I was told by someone that their Dad used to own a car with a 3rd row of rearwards facing seats, & they would insist on sitting on them. The first 10 minutes were quirky & fun but afterwards they began to feel dizzy. I guess the SPV has some kind of gravity corrector to prevent the driver from getting this effect.

By Phillip Culley (Pculley) on Wednesday, September 19, 2001 - 1:19 pm:

Perhaps, but I know a lot of buses and trains that have rear-facing seats, and whenever I use them, I never feel sick.

By Andrew on Tuesday, October 02, 2001 - 12:11 pm:

In the episode (don't know the title) were there Mysterons are taking the oxygen out of these army bases in a very cold place (well it must be there is snow all over the place). Captain Scarlet crashes the SPV as the Mysteron made ice on the road, cornel White says "are you all right captain?", Scarlet replies "I'm fine the reverse seating saved me" -this must be the real reason for the backwards seating - as someone above thought

By Charlie on Tuesday, October 02, 2001 - 1:59 pm:

Its Avalanche the is what the episode is called-incase your interested! :) Yeah, it does look as though those backward-facing seating is some kind of safety measure. Oh yeah one other thing that I have been pondering over, it looks to me as if there is two people driving the SPV when there are two people in it. Surely it doesn't take 2 people to drive it? Is one of them controling another part of it!?

..is that a question that has already been answered?! :)

Oh, and howdy Andrew S! (if its you! :)) did you get my email hon?

C x

By Andrew on Wednesday, October 03, 2001 - 11:50 am:

Ok Charlie, Since I'm the only Andrew S Here (I think) i asume you are talking to me, if so no I didn't get your e-mail and who are you is Charlie your real name?

By Charlie on Thursday, October 04, 2001 - 12:13 pm:

By Andrew on Thursday, October 04, 2001 - 1:41 pm:

nope

By Kinggodzillak on Sunday, December 23, 2001 - 2:45 pm:

When Blue goes to pick up his SPV, the garage mechanic can be heard banging something in his little booth, as if he has a hammer. But a clos eup of him shows all he has is a radio and a dozen cans of beans.

By neil on Monday, December 24, 2001 - 6:20 am:

also in the long shot when the SSC arrives, there is no spectrum logo on the door.

By neil on Monday, December 24, 2001 - 8:01 am:

just like winged assassin, the truck the SPV is hidden in has no roof. the arial masts can be seen sticking out of the top of the truck.

By Kinggodzillak on Wednesday, January 02, 2002 - 1:32 pm:

The President asks Captain Brown if he can play a good game of 3D Chess. Perhaps he can - but you don't have a board, Mr President.

By Kinggodzillak on Tuesday, January 08, 2002 - 1:58 pm:

What is the point of the Car Vu? Its ugly, there's only one way up or down, there's no safety equipment and it looks like a slight breeze could take it down.

By neil on Wednesday, January 09, 2002 - 11:09 am:

Re, the 3D chess, the world president didn't have much time to get it out of the box did he?

By Kinggodzillak on Wednesday, January 09, 2002 - 1:21 pm:

And where exactly does the President's 'emercency exit' lead to? An bunker hidden 400 feet down? Or out the top of the building? Its not very clear.

By Stephen La Riviere on Monday, January 14, 2002 - 8:04 pm:

At the bottom of the building as the lift goes down... and he wouldn't have survived if he was at the top!

By Kinggodzillak on Tuesday, January 15, 2002 - 1:24 pm:

No, I mean, where did the President get to when he whizzed of away from Brown.

By Denise on Tuesday, June 04, 2002 - 7:26 pm:

I recently saw the short CGI pilot excerpt for Capt. Scarlet in Coventry at the Fanderson Convention. It looks really good, and Francis Matthews and Ed Bishop both talked about how much fun it was getting together again for the dialogue. And Gerry Anderson said that the characters look odd without their strings! *grin*

By D.K. Henderson on Friday, March 14, 2003 - 7:46 am:

I don't know where else to put this question, so I'll put it here. I first saw Captain Scarlet on the Sci-Fi channel. Once or twice (I can't remember which episodes) at the opening sequence, as the camera zooms in on Scarlet ("one man Fate has made indestructible...his name, Captain Scarlet.") Colonel White's voice came on saying, "Captain Scarlet is indestructible. You are not. Remember this; do not try to imitate him."

All right. I have the complete DVD set of Captain Scarlet, and that little warning is not on any of the episodes. Can anyone tell me why?

By Kinggodzillak on Friday, March 14, 2003 - 4:03 pm:

Cos it wasn't part of the original, only added later. It is on the R2 DVDs as an extra on vol 6, dunno aboot anywhere else.

By D.K. Henderson on Friday, March 14, 2003 - 4:46 pm:

Thank you kindly.

Did they add that because kids WERE trying to imitate him and getting hurt? That's the reason Barrie added pixie dust to his play "Peter Pan." Originally, he said that you could fly if you just believed hard enough, and kids were crashing all over the place.

By Phillip Culley (Pculley) on Friday, March 14, 2003 - 7:18 pm:

Kinggodzillak, which DVD was it on? I thought R2 DVDs only go up to volume 5 :)

By Kinggodzillak on Friday, August 15, 2003 - 5:17 pm:

Ah. Theres a volume 6 that comes with the boxset. The main feature is Gerry Anderson's clipshow/documentary Captain Scarlet SIG, but it also has extras of the various opening titles sequences as well as the Japanese one.

By D.K. Henderson on Monday, August 25, 2003 - 5:07 am:

Why didn't Captain Brown think to blow himself up when they were in the maximum security vehicle? Or while they were in the elevator?

What ever happened to Captain Scarlet's original body?

Later in the series, the Mysterons would give up after one failure, but here, and in "Winged Assassin" they kept trying.

Why did they decide that they wanted the President alive? Their original statement was that they were going to assassinate him.

BTW, does Captain Scarlet's family know that the Paul Metcalfe walking around is no longer the original?

By Kinggodzillak on Sunday, June 20, 2004 - 2:49 pm:

When the MEV first finds the Mysteron city, it's looking very bright and colourful, and all its lights are clearly on. Compare that to the shot just before it's hit by the MEV missile, and for some reason the Mysteron's have turned all their lights off... :)
Also, on the left of the city is a blue column with something smouldering in it. It's smouldering at the speed it would in our atmosphere, not on Mars...

By Influx on Friday, March 11, 2005 - 12:45 pm:

Does the DVD have any indication of who did the paintings that play under the ending theme? The style looks very familiar.

By Kinggodzillak on Saturday, September 17, 2005 - 4:10 pm:

Ron Emberton.

By Daniel Phillips on Friday, November 06, 2009 - 6:29 pm:

For a peaceful people the Mysterons were remarkably quick to condemn an entire planet for 3 mens actions and ignore all Earths attempts at peace afterwards.

They rebuilt the city in 30 seconds and they are apparently unkillable, also after they took over Captain Black they would know he just made a mistake.

For those interested, I found the following documentary on "The Making of Captain Scarlet" a diverting watch.
