Operation McClaine

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Supermarionation: Joe 90: Operation McClaine

This may only be a fault on the Channel 5 vid, but at one point during the operation scene, Dr Sherman (the World President) looks up. This shot is followed by a shot where... Dr Sherman looks up. Its the exact same shot, being repeated. It seems to be a mistake on the whole ep itself rather than just the picture editing, as I think the music jumps back too.

Didn't Mac and Joe get away with it TOO easy? Wasn't that just a wee bit illegal? :)

I thought it rather nice that Mac wasn't trying to save a scientist, or a famous politician, or anyone who had information vital to the safety of the free world...just a man who happened to be a very good writer.

Given Supermarionation's penchant for crash and burn, I was surprised that they didn't show the passenger plane crashing--they cut from the stewardess' reassurance to a newspaper headline about the crash.

I liked Joe's euphemism for the BIG RAT process--getting "brained up". I wonder if Mac later apologized for hurting Joe's feelings after sarcastically slapping down his offer to do the operation, especially considering how the episode ended.

Prof. McClaine's mode of transportation seems a little...um...eye-catching, to say the least. You'd think that it would be surrounded by curious people every time he parks it in public.

I was surprised that Mac didn't say something ironic when he was preparing to get "brained up" and his son told him, "O.K, Dad, now just relax...."

This episode is deliberately misleading, and they never explain why they did things the way that they did. According to my episode guide, there was a deleted scene that would explain the confusion--indeed, it would explain the whole premise of Joe 90. After Mac was "brained up" he expressed concern about his ability to retain the knowledge that he'd been given, even temporarily. Joe, with his younger, more receptive mind, could do it much more easily.

I liked how the doctor was so reluctant to go along with things at first, but after seeing Joe in action for a few minutes, he angrily snapped at his assistant to hurry up and do what Joe asked.

The surgical crew may accept the wisdom of not mentioning what happened in the OR, but the fact remains that four adults now know that Prof. Ian McClaine's young son walked into the room and performed an operation that only one man could do. They are surely going to be wondering how.

I meant to mention this previously. When Mac first went to the hospital (barging right past the "Do Not Enter" sign) the scene went to the patient's room. Someone was talking to him with a thick accent, sounding rather French. I couldn't believe it when the camera pulled away and showed Mac talking. It didn't sound like him at all. It was almost as though he were trying to imitate the patient.

BTW, the same Lady of a Certain Age that was in the plane for "Splashdown" was also in the plane that crashed in this episode. Wonder if she was one of the fourteen that survived? Also wonder if she's related to Captain Hanson, who also has an affinity for airplanes and trouble?
