The Unorthodox Shepherd

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Supermarionation: Joe 90: The Unorthodox Shepherd

This is the bes of the Supermarionation Christmas eps, though it does seem as though someone found an hour long tape of church exterior shots and they just decided to make an ep around it.

Shepard's deafness is a good way to avoid questions - but some people say things it would not jeapardise Thomas to talk about, but he still carries on pretending, e.g when Mac brings Sam to Shepard's house.

Why don't the bullets hurt Joe? Did he have a bulet proof vest on? Why didn't the Evil Guy Whose Name I Can't Remember shoot for his head? :)

Wow, a Christmas episode where they actually go to church! From earlier Christmas episodes, you'd think that religion had nothing to do with Christmas....

What was the point of Anglisizing Carlo Masoni's name to Carl Mason?

That bit with Mason's tomb reminded me of an episode of The Avengers.

Braced or not, I find it hard to believe that the vicar could show no reaction to having a gun blast off a few inches behind his ear. That should have given him real deafness. And what was the point, considering that he then turned around and decided to come clean?

I'm sorry, but the idea of an angel wearing heavy glasses...:) :) :)

So, did they rush home and get Joe brained up for the occasion, or did that bank president also know how to manage a power pack?

Speaking of The Avengers, that bright red suit with the blue edging that Joe wears on occasion looks like one of Emma Peel's outfits.

I listened to Ken Turner's commentary on this episode. Rather interesting. He said that the wide shots of the church interior were of the real church, as they couldn't hope to get such fine detail. They were careful to do closeups in places where they could copy the background easily. He also said that there was a shot or two in the church where they used a life-sized manniquin, seen only from the back.

He also wondered just why they had an Australian flag hanging in an old English church. It shows in a scene near the end.

He also never really understood why writer Tony Bartwick (is that right?) had the forgers go to all the trouble of setting up their press in a church crypt.

Mistake up above. The Anglicized version of Carlo was "Clem". On the other hand, wouldn't you think that "Carl" would be the obvious choice, if you were going to do it at all?

I got a little confused. I got the impression from Joe that the plates that had presumably been destroyed 17 years ago were genuine plates, which was why they were a "perfect" counterfeit (except for the fresh ink). Then Sam refers to the "counterfeit plates".

Sam calls out, in the church and later in the churchyard, that Mason is desecrating "his" (Masoni's) memory. Considering that Carlo Masoni turned out to be a master criminal, wouldn't you think that his "real" reaction would be "Way to go, nephew!"

Joe seemed to think that the sight of an angel in flight would so frighten the criminals that they wouldn't be able to shoot straight. I still think that a bullet-proof vest would have been in order.

How the heck did they manage to arrange that angel suit so that it wouldn't hamper the power pack (or get set on fire by it)?

As far as we know, Joe was only given the brain pattern of the World Bank Vice President (why the *Vice* President, anyhoo?). Presumably that's also where he got the knowledge of how to fly the power pack...
