Drama at Space City

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Supermarionation: Fireball XL5: Drama at Space City
By Adam on Wednesday, December 05, 2001 - 9:03 am:

The first ever flashback episode.
(Unless Supercar has a flashback episode)
The episode are
The Doomed Planet and
The Triads

By DJU on Wednesday, December 05, 2001 - 12:15 pm:

how are those flashbacks incorperated in to the actual main story

By Adam on Wednesday, December 05, 2001 - 12:40 pm:

They were only at the start when Steve was reading his diary, the actual plot of this episode is about Jonathan Zero
(Commander Zero's son) and Zoonie in XL5 which is hijacked by Robert the Robot.

Two words for Mrs Zero:

SHUT
UP

Ugh! I hate her! Whats the point of going hysterical like she does!!?! Its only Jonathon and Zoonie! :)

I wouldn't normally complain about physics, because this is XL5, but how come the balloons drop to the ground when Jonathon is attached to them, but rise into the air when Commander Zero is attached to them?

How can Steve and Venus call their visit to Switzerland a 'holiday' when they spend only a day there?

I'll mention physics again, as although I don't think XL5 is seen on fire from the outside whilst its in space, something seems to happen between Zoonie putting the fire out, and XL5 re-entering Earth's atmosphere, as when XL5 crash-lands its been in flames throughout its descent.

I wonder just how Venus managed to persuade Commander Zero to look after Zoonie for the duration?

I had the impression that at least a couple days went by. It would have taken a little time to get to Switzerland, then they spent a good bit of time skating. With the second balcony scene, with Venus saying that they had a lot of skating to do, and Uncle Hans offering to bring them something from town, I had the idea that it was the following morning. With all the cuts, it's hard to guess just how much time has passed.

Have they never heard of babysitters in Space City? Do the Zeros only trust Venus to look after their son? Why did he have to bring him to Central Control?

Lieutenant 90's description of Jonathan as "a human thruster pack" seemed a bit of an understatement.

When does the Lieutenant get to sleep, anyway? Everyone else was (presumably) in bed, but poor 90 was still in Central Control.

Commander Zero and Lt. 90 are the air traffic controllers, so to speak. Don't they have pilots on standby for emergencies like this? I can understand Zero wanting to go after his son, but who's looking after Central Control?

Professor Matic spent all that time cleaning Robert up and improving his reaction times. He really needs to work on Robert's communication skills. Even the most simplistic robot should understand the command "STOP".

Just how far behind was Fireball XL1? Commander Zero commented that XL5 looked as if it had been on fire "for hours."

The Commander actually acted like a commander, sending Lt. 90 back in XL1 with Jonathan and Zoonie, and taking it on himself to bring down the crippled XL5. (Just how did he get back to Earth, anyway, with the engines mangled? I was expecting to see XL1 towing it.)

I was expecting Venus, at least, to make a big thing out of Zoonie's heroics, but they kept that part rather low-key.

BTW, from the first camera angle in the Zeros' bedroom, it looked as though they were in one bed, until the angle changed. Fred and Wilma Flintstone again. (They never showed where Steve and Venus were sleeping in Switzerland....)

Judging by the look of Steve's diary, either he's not very prompt at updating it, or this episode occurred right after "The Triads."

Wonder if Steve will ever dare to go on vacation again? Away just a few days or so and they wreck his ship!

By D.K. Henderson on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 - 7:33 am:

Were they actually playing that loud, raucous music in Central Control, or was that just to underscore Jonathan's behavior?

Rather nifty to think that you can get Fireball XL5 toys and accessories with breakfast cereal! I wonder if it was specifically XL5, or did it come with an assortment of decals and Jonathan picked out 5?

Steve's comment about Commander Zero needing driving lessons was completely uncalled for. The power cut out at the last moment. Considering that the ship was on fire again, Zero did a darn good job of it.

Professor Matic might want to tighten up Robert's leg joints. They seem awfully floppy.

Jock and/or Ross, I assume...
