Faster than Light

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Supermarionation: Fireball XL5: Faster than Light

What witless authority decreed that on the new, improved space stations, they would only have one single person on board? Do they have no psychologists in the WSP? Commander Zero even commented that all of the space station controllers tended to go strange. They can't understand why?

Listening to that station controller talking to himself--and listening to his inner voice answering back--I thought that the plot was going to center around his having gone insane and attacking the XL5 crew, or something. (BTW, why would a patrol ship be in charge of bringing supplies to the station? Why not a freighter?)

Nice to know that an XL engine can suddenly start up a dangerous and uncontrollable chain reaction for no apparent reason.

I can see traveling faster than the speed of sound. Even faster than the speed of light. But the speed of heat?

When is that fool Venus going to learn to keep things locked up when the Lazoon is around? What if he had eaten something poisonous from out of her supply cabinet? (Answer: the crew and the people in Space City would all rest easier, knowing that the chances of hazardous situations coming up had been cut down to the bare minimum.)

How did the Professor manage to get outside if Zoonie had eaten all the oxygen pills? And why didn't he notice that there was something peculiar about the patch of space they were in--namely, that it had a breatheable atomosphere?

Venus was moaning that it was her fault that they had no oxygen supply. Steve said that it was no one's fault. Well, yes, it was her fault. Sorry and all that, but it was. After Zoonie was snatched by the bird, Venus cried, "How did he get out there?" How do you think, woman? If you're going to let the little troublemaker wander around unsupervised....

Fireball XL5 had come to stop in the patch of atmosphere, the chain reaction having worked itself out without harming the engine. However, when they went back, they jumped up to light speed again. How did they do that without the chain reaction?

During the trip out, Venus was standing, unrestrained, in the cockpit with the others. They all passed out, Venus falling onto the console, but recovered with no ill effects. On the trip back, Venus was carefully strapped down, yet suffered something that did not effect the others. They never did explain what happened to her. (Professor Matic, having already called to Venus and received no answer, could not be bothered to go and see what was wrong until Steve did.)

Commander Zero had commented that, if the XL5 crew were still alive, they were seeing things that no humans had ever seen. A somewhat foggy atomophere and an ugly vulture flying about. Big deal.

When Space City became aware of XL5's return, Commander Zero ordered out a rescue vehicle, which looked like an XL. But the only vehicle I saw in space was a fuel tanker. Did the XL? arrive first and leave first, taking Venus back to the hospital?
