Hole in One

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Supermarionation: The Secret Service: Hole in One

This episode used a good bit of "live" shooting--those lovely stretches of golf course, and the live legs and feet of the golfers with their clubs.

The bad guys devised a very elaborate system for spying on the general. I couldn't help wondering how they managed to set up that hinging mechanism in the 15th hole, not the mention the underground pneumatic tubing system, without anyone noticing.

Mrs. Appleby didn't seem overly concerned about getting out of the way of Father Unwin's "chip" shot. And the golf ball must have landed on or right beside Matthew for him to find it and bring it out so quickly.

This far into the series, they didn't bother showing Matthew being shrunk, they just left it to be taken for granted.

That general seemed rather contemptuous of the Bishop and "security" over all. Come to think of it, one of the scientists sounded rather contemptuous when commenting that there must be a security leak.

Considering that Matthew was down on the floor, how did he see that the recording device was a golf ball? And how did he know that it was the 15th hole that had the mechanism attached to it?

After all the time that the Father spent trying to stall the General, he never noticed that the General was about to hit the wrong ball!

Since Matthew thought that Father Unwin would be too late putting the ball in the 15th hole, it would have been nice if he had made some comment about trying to prevent the jamming on his own somehow.

I was also surprised that neither the Father nor Matthew made any comment about the Father's spectacular shot! (A little assistance from Above, perhaps?)

I think that sequence reappears in a few later episodes...

I understand, from listening to the commentary on the first episode, that it was actually extremely difficult to film that "shrinking" sequence. It would have a tendency to shrink upwards as well as downwards, toward the middle of the screen, leaving Matthew dangling in midair. Having Matthew shrink only downwards, keeping his feet on the floor, was the problem. I also notice that, the instant before the shrinking begins, the image of Matthew darkens slightly.

Now that I've seen both episodes, I wonder if they got ideas for "Hole In One" from the Avengers episode "The Thirteenth Hole."
