Close Call

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Supermarionation: Terrahawks: Close Call

When Mark Darrel is waiting for the Overlander, the cube that is with him shines a green light in Darrel's face and for the rest of the episode Mark is a changed man intending to destroy the Terrahawks. This must mean that Mark Darrel has been brainwashed by Zelda, but at the end when Mary shoots him they realise that he is an android as they see a big hole in his chest with wires sticking out so either Mark was an android the whole time but was a peaceful robot until Zelda brainwashed him or somehow that green light replaced all his body organs with machinery.

The music from when Darrel is trying to crash the Overlander into Battlehawk has to be one of the best incidentals of the series.

I think I remember this episode, didn't Zelda create a robot replica of Mark Darrel earlier on, & the green light is some sort of controller. (I'm thinking back nearly 20 years so I could be wrong)

We see her knock him out at his home and his body vanishes. The next we see of him, he is waiting with a Cube for the Overlander to pass. He insults Zelda, then she blasts the green light at him and takes him over. It isn't til Mary shoots him that we find he is an android.

That's almost as I remember it, though I might have had the benefit of a repeat. I presume that Zelda had produced a robot replica of Darrel between scenes, but why would it still have independant (sp?) thourght? Unless this is some sort og 'personality cover' which can be turned off with the green light.

Although never fully explained in the series, there are enough 'clues' evident to point to Darrel being an android from the point Zelda gets her hands on him. Since Zelda and co are androids, it would probably not be too difficult for her to create a replica. Also, considering the Terrahawks have the ability to record Ninestein's brain pattern (and personality), then one would assume Zelda must at least have similar capabilities, and transferred Darrel's brain pattern to the replica. So Darrel didn't realise he was an android, until Zelda's 'programming' kicked in...
