Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Stargate - SG-1, Atlantis, etc: Novels, Books. Audio recordings (and other ways of storytelling!)
These are all the novels and other books I’ve managed to find so far. The links (hopefully) lead to the appropriate page on amazon.com - unless I could only find it on amazon.co.uk.

If anyone posts a comment about a particular book or author, I’ll create a new page for that category.

If you can add any more books, leave a note below or email me [not you, Peter ...]
Not all of these are easily available – quite a few are sold out at amazon.com, though they might be available elsewhere.

Stargate by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich. Details/reviews: here

Stargate SG-1 by Ashley McConnell (based on Children of the Gods). Details/reviews: here

The Price You Pay by Ashley McConnell. Details/reviews: here

The First Amendment by Ashley McConnell. Details/reviews: here

Rebellion by Bill McCay. This apparently follows on from the movie and was written before the series had been thought of, so the development of Jack and Daniel is likely to be very different and (presumably) there is no Sam and no Teal’c. Details/reviews: here

Retaliation by Bill McCay. Details/reviews: on amazon.co.uk – I couldn’t find this listed on amazon.com

Retribution by Bill McCay. Details/reviews: here

Reconnaissance by Bill McCay. Details/reviews: here

Resistance by Bill McCay. Details/reviews: here

The Stargate Internet Guide, compiled by Scifigate. Details/reviews: here

Stargate SG-1 – The Illustrated Companion by Thomasina Gibson.
Book 1 (seasons 1 and 2): on amazon.co.uk – I couldn’t find this listed on amazon.com
Book 2 (seasons 3 and 4): on amazon.co.uk – again I couldn’t find this listed on amazon.com

I've read all these books, and in the McCay ones there are quite a few similarities to SG1, but there are also many differences. What follows are some MAJOR spoilers for the McCay books, all of them. Read on at your own risk. You have been warned.

Hathor shows up, tries to seduce Daniel, and kidnaps him. Oddly, Hathor wears a cat helmet.

The Stargate can go to other worlds (I think Devlin and Emmerich intended this from the start though).

Ra WAS the last of his kind.

Abydos is destroyed and the people move to Earth!

Sha'uri (or Sha're, depending on your source) breaks up with Daniel, but she doesn't die.

The "Gods" attack Earth in a pyramid ship.

As most people will know, 99% of internet fanfiction is appalling! The only good thing about this is that Web Site Number 9 gets a lot of good stories to MiST! (But I've only found one Stargate MSTing there - Unstable Grounds) I gave up looking for any decent fanfic a long time ago but, by sheer chance, was surfing around various SG-1 websites recently and came across this story called Dark Ages which I really really enjoyed! You do need to have seen all of season 4 to be able to follow it, but it actually gave me a perspective on Daniel which I'd not fully appreciated before. See what you think.

By Phillip Culley (Pculley) on Thursday, July 25, 2002 - 4:06 pm:

Great news - Keith Topping (who wrote the 'Buffy' and 'Angel' guides) has written an unofficial guide to SG-1 which should be relesaed in the autumn. Check Telos Publishing for more details...

By Phillip Culley (Pculley) on Thursday, July 25, 2002 - 4:11 pm:

And also, I thought the Stargate Illustrated Companion was for seasons 1 and 2 (book 1), and 3 and 4 (book 2); not 3 to 5.

By Callie on Friday, July 26, 2002 - 2:33 am:

Absolutely right on that latter point, Philip – I’ll amend the list shortly. (I’ll also amend your link, which doesn’t work!)

I see there’s also a Stargate Operations Manual due out, written by Kate Ritter (who she? Anyone know?). Details such as they are (there’s no description of what the book will be about, though it sounds like SG-1’s version of Star Trek’s Technical Manual!) here.

Another description of what’ll be in “Beyond the Gate” can be found here.

By Merat on Friday, July 26, 2002 - 5:29 am:

Maybe this is a sign of more SG1 novels?

By Callie on Tuesday, December 03, 2002 - 9:53 am:

Having pre-ordered it so long ago that I’d completely forgotten that I’d ordered it (!), I’ve just received Beyond the Gate – the unofficial and unauthorised guide to Stargate SG-1 by Keith Topping. Babylon 5 fans who’ve seen The Babylon File by Andy Lane will recognise the style: it’s an episode by episode guide listing all the information that Stargate geeks need to know. It lists all the guest stars, reminding you what you might have seen them in before; lists the production staff; gives a brief synopsis of the episode; details Stargate continuity; and gives quotable quotes, comments from the cast and crew etc. It’s surprisingly up to date: the last episode it talks about in detail is Season 6’s episode 11, Prometheus, and it even gives a brief synopsis of the as yet unshown final 11 episodes of the season. At the back of the book it gives a long list of websites dedicated to the show, some of which I’d not been aware of before but will be visiting in the near future!

I’ve only just started reading it today but it’s a really interesting book. The section that obviously appeals to me most is called ‘Logic, let me introduce you to this window’ and this is the nitpicking section. To my embarrassment, even in the few episodes I’ve read so far Keith has spotted plenty of things that nobody here has! It’ll be fun going back through the videos again and seeing if I agree with his opinion.
The only inconvenient thing about this section is that the ‘nits’ are just listed in one long paragraph. Sometimes it’s hard to tell when he’s moving from one nit to the next; and when he puts in an explanatory sentence before a nit you find yourself reading that explanatory sentence and thinking, “Well what’s wrong with that?” before moving onto the next sentence and realising, “Oh, I see - this is the actual nit.” It makes for jerky reading.

The book does have some other irritating features:

The front cover. I have absolutely no idea what’s pictured on the cover! There’s a pyramid, a very misty and highly inaccurate picture of a Stargate and its event horizon ... and a thing. I can’t even try to describe what it looks like – it’s just a thing! Has anyone else seen it and knows what it is?! Or click here and then click on the picture to enlarge it.

Misspellings. There are too many, even in the few sections I’ve read so far. The proofreader wants shooting. I got especially peeved when Keith then pointed out a misspelling in one of the episodes!

The Possible Influences section. Most episodes have this section, which lists films, songs, books, poems etc which might have inspired certain storylines, lines from characters etc. While Keith must have put a lot of hard work into this section in particular and while, for instance, direct quotes from The Wizard of Oz and other movies and shows are fairly obvious, much of the section seems to be really grabbing at straws while some suggestions seem to be downright inaccurate. In The First Commandment, for instance, he suggests that the quote “Tastes like chicken” is a nod to the movie (except that ‘tastes like chicken’ has been used in about a million other films and shows as well); in Cor-Ai, he suggests the influence of The Next Generation’s ‘Encounter at Farpoint’ (what, because they both happen to feature a trial?!); and in Singularity he suggests the episode might have been inspired by the movie Aliens, presumably because both have a woman getting upset about losing a child they just met. Oh, and apparently Thor’s Hammer was influenced by Lord of the Rings because they spend some time in a cave. There’s such a thing as trying too hard to find a link that just ain’t there.

However, I can’t criticise the guy too much when he insists on spelling naqahdah the same way I do because he goes by the same argument that I do: it was spelled that way onscreen once and so that makes it canon, despite the fact that most websites – even official ones like MGM, Showtime and Sci-Fi – spell it differently now!

As far as I can tell, this book’s only available in the UK – certainly Amazon.com doesn’t list it, only Amazon.co.uk. Having been published by a company whose offices are in Bromley, just a couple of bus rides away from me, I could have picked the thing up rather than paying postage!

SG-1 comic books:

Stargate SG1 Convention Special 2003
Stargate SG1 Convention Special 2004
Stargate POW # 1-3

By Wolverine on Monday, March 29, 2004 - 7:02 am:

Also, just got this today:
Stargate Special Edition #1 (don't know if there was a #2) --- basically an adaptation of the original movie. It's dated 1996 and was by Entity Comics.

I've also got Stargate SG-1 POW #1 with Sam on the cover (it's a photo). The POW and Convention Specials are by Avatar Press. This is dated Feb 2004.
In POW#1, a Goa'uld (Skaara actually) comes through the gate following SG-2, then after the iris is closed, Skaara opens it once more with his hand - well using some flashing device.

Have we ever seen this on the series? I don't recall seeing any such thing... At least the art by Renato Guedes is miles better than the Stargate special edition...

By KAM on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 - 2:27 am:

Entity put out four issues of Stargate in regular & special edition versions.

Also in '96 they put out 3 issues of Stargate: Doomsday World in regular & Prism Foil cover versions.

In '97 they put out 3 issues of Stargate: Rebellion, 1 issue of Stargate: New Adventures Collection, 1 issue of Stargate: Underworld, 1 issue of Stargate: One Nation Under Ra. All of them seem to have some kind of special edition variant.

Stargate SG-1: POW seems to have 4 issues, according to Mile High Comics website. It also has 7 variants for the first issue, Regular, Carter Photo, O'Neil Photo, Painted, Golden, Platinum, & Wraparound covers.

Anyone who is interested Mile High Comics is having a sale on the issues that they carry (not every issue they list is currently in stock). If you go there just click on the Internet Store link and type Stargate into the search section & that will bring up all their listings.

Callie - I have absolutely no idea what’s pictured on the cover!
I believe that is supposed to be a TV connector cable.

By Merat on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 4:04 pm:

Website #9 is down, any idea on when it'll be back up?

By Snick on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 4:26 pm:

None. Mike Neylon isn't giving any hints, even.

By Callie on Sunday, September 19, 2004 - 7:25 pm:

This is the most hilarious story I've ever read in connection with Stargate! Do note that it's meant to be bad, and take heed of the warning at the beginning of the story!

By KAM on Tuesday, September 21, 2004 - 1:08 am:

Funny. I especially liked how Jack took care of the kitten. :O

Reminded me of a joke my dad used to make when people asked what happened to our Manx Cat's tail. (Manx Cats are born tailless.)

By constanze on Tuesday, September 21, 2004 - 2:57 am:

Thanks for the link, Callie, that was hilarious. So many good lines...

By Merat on Sunday, January 09, 2005 - 4:14 pm:

There are three new Stargate books out. "Trial By Fire" "Sacrifice Moon" and "A Matter of Honor". However, they are available in the UK only! Anyone here read them? They any good? I WILL be ordering them shortly through Amazon.co.uk, so I expect them to arrive in late July or thereabouts....

By Merat on Monday, January 07, 2008 - 2:25 pm:

Ok, I finally got a few of those books, although I waited for Christmas. "Trial by Fire" (SG1), "Rising" (SGA), and "Reliquary" (SGA). They are short, but good! There are a good number of them out now, so I'll be ordering the others.

By Beth MacKeage (Beth__) on Saturday, January 23, 2010 - 8:14 pm:

I have been reading the Atlantis books and made it up to #11 Angelus when they suddenly became unavailable. They are listed on the Chapters.ca site, complete with date of issue but when the date arrives they are 'temporarily unavailable to order' and not in the stores either. So far #s 12-14 are supposed to be out there but unavailable. Does anyone know anything about that?

Since I cannot find the Atlantis books I decided to try the SG-1 efforts but can only find #9 Roswell; the rest are also unavailable.

By Callie (Csullivan) on Saturday, March 20, 2010 - 9:12 am:

Vala gets her own comic book! There will be a whole series of comic books about the SG-1 series in due course.

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Sunday, March 21, 2010 - 12:54 am:

No comics featuring the Penguin Goa'uld? 8-o :-(
